Sewing What are you currently sewing for your BJD Vol 14

Dec 15, 2020

    1. Unexpected turn of events today at my house. A leap day miracle? Does anyone even remember I own this doll?
Praline got an outfit for the first time since I modified a Barbie dress for her. It wasn't very nice of me to leave her in playline clothes for a whole year! She got one faux kimono top and one hakama-esque box pleated wrap skirt.

@cobaltconduct A jacket would be very cute with this!!
The vest is fully lined and top stitched so darts will have to wait for attempt 2 because I am not ripping this apart. Thank you for the tip though! I'll pay more attention to the sizing of the back piece.

    2. @nyaaain - I love that colour combo with the hair! Also incredible neat pleating at this scale!

Meanwhile in "ok gotta make a matching jacket for the orange pants" land - I have made more pants instead. I love how useful the pockets are (to me)!

    3. I do this all the time, only the other way around. I inted to make pants and end up making just about anything else instead.

This is briliant! It's like a modern version of the old "sewing companion" dolls.

    4. I had never heard about those and now I'm down a rabbit hole! I guess it's only fair I make my dolls work for their outfits

    5. My lil apron boy is ready for any kitchen disaster now!!

    6. @nyaaain That strawberry apron is too cute!

    7. @nyaaain - such a fittingly cute item on a cute boy! What's he going to make?

I got myself together and made the orange jacket to go with the pants. Nuoyi is so cool now (I still have to add snaps)

It's a liiiitle bit ill-fitting because I forgot the pattern I drafted ages ago still needed adjustments. Maybe next time I'll remember better!

    8. @nyaaain So cute!

Here I'm making a little something for my Soom grit on Rhubarbe body - currently without head because I'm also painting her faceup XD

It's not nicely sewed, but I don't care

    9. @cobaltconduct Verona works at a french bakery, so lots of bread!

I modified my t-shirt pattern again for the purple shirt on Liam. I was using the shoulder curve on my dress form, which I now know is not the same as the shoulder curves on the doll. I draped off Volta for the base of this try instead of the dress form. This explains the vest shoulder problem too. I think it's better now, but it's hard to tell on a t-shirt.

Cheby's new shirt is very dangerous and he's at high risk for a wardrobe malfunction at all times. It's up to you if this is good or bad!

    13. I can think of soooooooo many captions for that picture.

"And I thought shopping with my wife was bad....."

      "Who made me Kindergarden Cop?"

"If you don't stop calling each other 'poopie head' we are going home and NOBODY gets ice cream."

    14. What I've been sewing since February (the red yukata is almost done and the dark red fabric under it is going to become a skirt to go with it):

Not included in the picture are my first tries at the bunny's yukata-ish thing and a skirt for her. I knew sewing at her scale would be difficult but wasn't at all expecting how much more difficulty her teeny tiny waist in relation to her wide hips and tail would add to it, so finishing her outfit is on hold while I try to decide if making her a smaller, magnet-attached tail would be worth the effort. :sweat

Granted, I started this whole project with the intention of making just the yukatas as something temporary to wear for the naked dolls, to hopefully build the confidence to make their intended more complicated outfits, but now that I've been sewing these I've realized I actually prefer this look and style over what I had intended to do. And, since for the first time in ages I've now actually began to feel excited to sew doll clothing again, I've decided to completely ditch the original plans for their intended styles. Mission failed successfully I guess.

    15. wouldn't it be just as easy to make a buttonhole style slit for her tail? (I swear that sounded so much better in my head) Then you don't have to worry about the tail wandering off, which is absolutely a thing

    16. I've been thinking about something like that as well, but the tail is so big that the slit would have to be quite big as well and when it would be on it would probably also show her buttocks... though maybe I could add a snap on the hem side of it, as bulk wouldn't be a problem there... but then I still would have the problem of how to make a waist closure with no bulk, yet the skirt wide enough since even her hips alone are much wider than her waist... *_*
      [IMG]
Box opening photo of her, seems I've managed to pick the exact angles with my camera where it can't be seen how the tail is actually much thinner closer to her body, but maybe this pic explains my other problem better at least. :sweat
...I just realized, I probably should have started by stating that ideally, I would prefer the tail to stay underneath all the clothing rather than be seen at all, sorry about that. :doh So really the issue is more so how to make the skirt wide enough for the lower portion of the body yet the waist not too bulky. The best idea I have for it now is to fake it by strategically attaching the skirt to the yukata itself and just not worry about how messy it would look on the inside. Obviously that would mean the yukata couldn't then be worn with another skirt, but for some strange reason I have a feeling that there might not ever going to be anything else to wear with it anyway... :XD:

Thanks for mentioning the wandering tail thing by the way, I somehow hadn't considered that at all even though I have a few human dolls with tiny magnet ears that I always worry about losing when taking photos outside, and I'm hoping to photograph this doll outside more than the others as she's so much more portable than an SD size doll, so. :)

    17. Hello ! I want to share with you a new outfit, made for yo-sd dolls. An a-line floral dress, socks, a real handbag and a handknitted cardigan <3 My Imda 3.0 is modelling :)

      Have a nice day !

    18. Everyone's been making excellent garments lately!

The cutest girl in the world (Michi) got a new dress today! Her body is so weird and impossible to fit anything to so it's been very frustrating to make this very simple thing :abambi: (yes, I know it's actually mostly my own impatience at fault). I've learned from my mishaps so I hope drafting the next dress will go better, here she is for now, though!

    19. @cobaltconduct she looks absolutely adorable!

I finally finished sewing the body suit and leg/arm wraps for my Layla.
But I do feel like she's missing something

    20. I sewed something simple for my Oherside Dione. This is only the second outfit I sew for her in 11 years. What a shame!

    21. I love this outfit! It fits her perfectly. She's beautiful.

I finally got round this month to making Ondine (Fairyland Celine) a top so she could stop sitting there unclothed.
This is bits of hand dyed lace, and a little multicolored trim I had. It velcroes in the back.

    22. Pretty! :D

    23. Thank you!

    24. Lately I'm grateful when I bother to sew anything. I've made this "dress" for her this week. It needs shorts to go with still and I need to make an entire little wardrobe for her as she's still new to me. :whee:

    26. Ah that's so nice of you @cobaltconduct thank you! yeah I really love her and am kind of enjoying a slow burn as a nice side effect of being tired and preoccupied :XD:

    28. I feel like I always push making tshirts and other stretchy clothing further and further into future because of the hassle they are to sew... but I ended up doing a lot by hand so it wasn't even that bad :abambi:

I should definitely work on getting my handmade stitches more even, though.

    29. I just finished a backpack for my new Maskcat Ronia -- before giving her any clothes to wear! The pattern is the "Sling Bag" from "Sewing Stylish Handbags & Totes", with all dimensions divided by 3 (because it's a human-sized pattern).

I hand-wove the exterior fabric. The zipper and strap adjuster work. It's fully lined and has a small pocket, a zippered pocket, a water bottle pocket, and three pencil pockets.

    30. The details are amazing @silveryarn :ablink: the hand-woven colours are beautiful, too!

Three times the charm they say... I had another crack at making jeans after two iffy pairs and finally had some good success! No twisting around the legs this time, no weird fit. The waistband is a little bulky because the denim fabric I used is quite thick but I can always add a belt to hide imperfections... Also the yoke is too low but pfff. I think I'll wear them out with sandpaper a bit, make them look more worn and lived-in. In any case, I have a okay-ish working pattern now should I ever want to try again!

    32. I haven't sewn aside from simple hemming and alterations in years tbh, plus I've never done it for a doll. But I tried my hand at seeing what I could do with material I had laying around!

I made her a tanktop and cardigan and am already itching to make her more clothing! :XD:

    35. I'm definitely going for comfy, cozy vibes in her wardrobe! :)

Thank you so much! I've always had so much respect for those who sew their doll clothing, but I gained even more while fighting with the tiny seams haha!

    36. I haven't sewn in awhile, I'm hoping to once I've moved and can set up my machine and learn to properly hand sew but I made this hat for my girl a lil bit ago!

    38. Thank you! I am planning to make some hoodies and cute leggings, right now I'm looking for a dress pattern I like too! ♡

    39. She's about to get the cutest wardrobe! :D

    40. She is! In all sorts of pretty pastels I'm hoping too! I really want a bunch of pink stretch patterns, like strawberries and bunnies! :D

    41. I spent decades thinking that I wasn't capable of sewing, but getting into doll collecting lit a fire under my crafting butt. I've been trying my hand at tiny doll costumes with just an idea and no pattern but I saw a book of doll clothes patterns by Hanon on Amazon and grabbed it. They have a range of differnt skill level patterns, but the instructions are very good and easy to follow so even someone sewing-challenged like myself can make: A pair of trousers with working pockets! I have to admit to being proud of myself for these :)
Next up - lace strap dress.

    42. Only recently started sewing again, haven’t made anything in over 7 years. It’s rough but I’m having a lot of fun! I made a dress for my RS Rong custom and a little jester outfit for my elfkin, but this shirt+cravat for my myou 45cm girl is the least messy. Still have a lot to learn

    44. Thanks @downturningeyes! I'm not a the level of trying a lace cravat yet, but I'm on my way. Yours is looking very fancy!

    45. I began a kimono (in three layers) for my oldest oni girl. Nagajuban and inner kimono are sewed, I have the obi and the outer kimono left! It's for next autumn (I know I'm slow ^^')

This was my latest muse-driven creation. Sometimes I just get a compelled urge to Make a Thing and this wouldn't let go of my brain. This little 1/6 outfit has a petticoat, a shirt, an underskirt, an over skirt, a vest, a waist belt, stockings, and the little armbands. Hand sewn, every dang stitch because it would seem I am nuts like this. The doll is a Dollzone Little Snow, on their Milky Tea 1/6 body.
The vest took the longest, working out how to use trim to make it, then the picot beading around the armholes.

    47. Wow—you say the vest took the longest, I can tell! Excellent work on the whole outfit but the vest is lovely

    48. Thank you very much! I ought to see about making her some shoes...

    54. I made Lucrezia a little sailor dress with removable collar. Doing the pleated skirt without a pattern was surprisingly easy, although the ironing was a chore.

I also made a pair of neon fishnet stockings for Aurelia, but I haven't got the picture off my phone yet.

    57. I made a new outfit for Nuoyi over the weekend. The cursed denim that is too thick for dolls is thankfully almost finished after this skirt! I'll still weather and decorate it a bit and the shirt still needs buttons for the sleeves but it feels good making a whole fit in more or less one go.
