Weird "Off-topic" finds? (Strange dolls found in strange places) (doll nudity)

Mar 8, 2020

    1. I have a bizarre find I came across in a really unlikely place... Just sitting in a cabinet at a comics and collectibles store. She was only $15 and it wasn't hard for me to find out where she originally came from... I ended up getting her just to see if I could get her back to the doll hobby where she belongs, with someone who will take good care of her, cuz honestly that person isn't me and I feel bad about it.

Yes, I did tell the shop owners what her worth actually was. No, they didn't care and sold her to me for that much anyway.

But with her non-removable eyes and fixed-on hair and strangely strung body, she's definitely way off-topic so I haven't been able to talk about her to anyone much lately.

Does anyone else have weird art dolls and strange finds you came across in bizarre locations?

    2. Wow, what a find. Hopefully she can find a forever home where she'll be loved.

My husband found a vintage Tressy doll literally in a dumpster recently, she's in very very good condition so no idea WHY she was in the trash. poor doll.

I've found a fair few vintage dolls in charity shops over the years and a tonner doll for a fiver once (lol) and once an artist made needle felted bear for £2.

I dream of finding a bjd one day lol.

    3. Years ago, I stopped collecting Fashion Royalty dolls not due to any fault with the dolls themselves, but because I just wouldn't take them out of the box because they were so perfect. I sold them all in literally the exact same condition I had bought them haha. Part of the fun of dolls for me is the journey of making them perfect, and these had already arrived perfect. That wasn't very fun for me!

Since then, it's like I've become a magnet for Fashion Royalty dolls at estate sales (seriously- there could be no other dolls at all there, and then surprise! Here's a MIB Fashion Royalty doll!), GARAGE sales, random antique and vintage stores, and even one of the American Horror Story: Coven collaboration dolls at a comic shop (definitely overpriced there, but I guess if you're a big fan and didn't want to shop online it'd be fine /shrug). They're following me at this point.

    4. I was at a doll show once that was all antiques, porcelains, reborn etc. amid the frilly porcelain dolls was a little Custom House Ai doll. I just had to take her home.

    5. So I live by a tiny village that's known for antique stores. It has, I think, 7 in under 3 miles of roadway. Sometimes when I'm looking for weird stuff for work or for fun I head out there. In the back of one of these huge antique stores, there's a large, beautiful armoire from the early 1800s. It sits next to a huge oil painting of a clown, though nothing else in the area has anything clown-related. If you open the armoire, it's filled with a ridiculous amount of clown dolls and other clown-themed decor. It makes me laugh every time I see it. I really need to take a picture of it someday.

There's also an Elvis-head lamp, a labeled bottle from the late 19th century that was once filled with some snake oil called 'Blood Wine', and a strange amount of Edwardian clothing in the same antique barn. It's a really fun place to look around. Last time I went I purchased a punch bowl from the 60s that came with its original punch recipe book.
