Hi yall! I started following BJDs around 2007 on deviantart. I just thought they were the neatest things. I was very into sculpture in school, and I made several versions of sculpy, oil clay, plaster, and ceramic BJDs through the years. As I grew as an artist I lost interest in BJDs, but recently I've been more interested in pursuing hobbies that are just for fun, which brought me back! I mocked up a BJD using some sculpy and an artist's pose doll last year and that cemented my reborn interest in the hobby. I'm interested in purchasing a company made doll eventually, but I'm finding that the hobby has expanded A LOT since my teenage years. There are SO many companies and independent creators. How do you sort through them all?!? I'm so impressed by the increased variety of dolls, in skin color, facial features, and fantasy types. I love that there are more realistic proportions and some that are absolutely wildly stylized. I'm also interested in the OC aspect of the hobby, coming from a background of text based and tabletop roleplay. I would love to find some creative friends to develop characters with and tell stories. Thank you for reading, and I'm excited to make friends!
Welcome! I also got into the hobby similarly, found bjds on deviantart ca 2007 but only really got into it a couple of years ago because I wanted a thing to do just for fun... it's probably a very similar story to many here I agree, there are a lot of dollmakers these days, but also good old classics are still there. When I came back to bjds I started out with checking my old favourites first and eventually got myself up to date with the newer stuff. For Chinese dolls, you'll get an ok overwiev browsing ACBJD, Legenddoll and maybe Space Studio BJD for newer dolls. Luts sells their own and also vends for some other Korean dollmakers so their site is probably a good peep to see what's going on there. In Japan, things seem a bit more traditional still, as Volks is still very popular, but Alchemic Labo and Alice in Labyrinth are also still there. Western makers are mostly present on social media, but there's also some info on DoA of course. Take your time catching up, I think you'll surely find something you like soon
Hi Cobalt! Thank you for all the sites to look at! I definitely need to do some exploring, and these seem like great places to start. So far I've been looking through ACBJD. I've noticed a majority of the BJD community is on Instagram, which I've never really clicked with. I'm glad this forum is still kicking! The doll profiles are so cuuuute!
