Volks Tokyo Dolpa 30 Chat, December 22, 2013

I saw Belldandy, and I hate Volks for doing more iconic anime/manga-girls. I'm not 100% in love with the face, but I can't help myself BECAUSE IT'S BELLDANDY...!
This sucks T_T

 

I just saw the teaser photo of Belldandy. I know it was already said but OMG, is right!

 

Belldandy is coming home to me, I don't care what it takes. *points to icon* She may be the first doll that I keep 100% default permanently.

 

I actually love her face- though not a huge fan of the show. I know, heresy! Here's a screen grab of Volks News for people who haven't seen- courtesty of facebook feed and wolfheinrich.

I just saw her this morning and I nearly died. She's so perfect. Sadly, I have other commitments so I won't be entering. But good luck to those who do enter

 

She is gorgeous but no $$$ , can't afford to buy any volks for a long long time

 

I saw her and the DDs, too. Also the devil and the angel and the little Isao... xD There are many, many dolls this time. Belldandy is cute, but she's not for me. I've never liked the anime/manga. ^^ But I know a lot of people do! So good luck to everyone who's entering for her!

 

I don't think the official page is up yet- just scans of Volks News 56 out on the web. If anyone does have links to where the scans are/images then it'd be super much appreciated!

I found a flickr feed of the other resin doll scans here. Looks like Volks is continuing with the Midi sized heads on yo bodies? I might be wrong about that but that discussion should likely go over to the yo thread. Either way, pretty excited about SDGr Belldandy even if harem-esque anime isn't my favorite. I really love her face up.

I have to agree. i was hoping the Reisner/Willams thing was the thing and we were done with it.

 

Wow, I can't believe Volks is releasing a Belldandy! Ah! My Goddess was one of my first big manga series as a kid and I still own the OVA series on VHS. Thankfully I'm not 100% on her face or else I'd be so, so tempted. I will definitely be excited when people start getting her though and look at all the photos. I hope they continue this trend of older anime heroines though!

EDIT: I also love how this entire Dolpa is manga-based dolls! It's so awesome to see.

ETA: This probably also explains why they've chosen old school anime/manga characters for this release. They will be a big temptation to their longtime figure kit customers!

I think the midi size is very silly looking, but I can appreciate a silly doll once in a while. I think the chibi Satan is totally adorable! The ankle wings are clever and the two styles of head wings!

I really love Satan and Devilman and LOVE the different engineering that looks to be happening with all the wings in addition to the different hand/feet sculpts. I'm just sad that Volks is continuing with the YoMidi line as I'm just not into the more 'chibi' look of them. It doesn't look too bad in their default outfits but in the normal clothes it's way more apparent! I can't wait to see photos of these guys though. I wonder if their wings are magnetized and they come on tenshi bodies, and if so how well Satan's wings hold on as they look heavy! I sort of want the body/extras for my little Piccolo. xD

 

I love Belldandy's sculpt... But II think I'm going to pass on her. Not a total fan of Ah! My Goddess. However, I am a fan of her character design. I would like get the Cyborg 009 Yos though. =3

 

Oh... my gosh!!! Last night I saw the pictures of Belldandy and was thinking, "Wow, she is absolutely gorgeous. If I collected DD's I'd seriously want her. Good thing she's not resin or I'd be in trouble."

But... I just saw... IS she resin? Or is she a DD?? My wallet is hoping for the latter! I've never seen the Oh! My Goddness anime or read the manga, but Belldandy is one of those characters that's pretty hard not to recognize anyway. I'm going to start writing my letters to Santa right now.

 

The wings are magnetized and the four right and four left are cast as a single piece. So the individual wings are not poseable, but the right and left will be able to tilt at different angles.
I loved Satan as a manga character, so it's so fun to see him as a wee little doll!

Belldandy is definitely resin! You can see her SDGraffiti girl shoulder jointing and she's shown with the limited SD clasping hands.

 

Totally a big fan of Ah! my Goddess Belldandy is one of my favorite girl, Hope she will be inSD16 body, but it's Gr i'll pass but her outfit and wig was totally the one i can't miss!

 

I've never watched Ah! My Goddess, but the she is instantly recognizable. I am so happy they didn't make her a Dollfie Dream. I loved the SD one-off Disney collaboration models they released and this makes me even happier! From the few pictures released so far, she looks beautiful, can't wait for more

 

I feel like I'm being really critical of Volks lately what with Belle, Prince and these YoMidi's that I dislike so much. I love you Volks, I swear. Buuut I feel like the eyes on your recent SDs are getting farther and farther away from the nose bridge and I don't particularly find it a good look.

I almost had a heart attack when I saw Belldandy... I have wanted an SD size Belldandy since I was 14 (I'll be turning 25 this month), I have tried to make her in different scuplts, too, and was even looking at some DDs to possibly shell her into, when I came across the news thread yesterday and nearly died! I think she is perfect and I am SO HAPPY!!!!
She will be mine, no matter what, I am already saving to be sure I will have enough for her no matter what!! My boyfriend and I have been watching the series and I think she fits perfectly!!!! I am SO happy she is SDGr and her default make-up is gorgeous and her outfit and wig are immaculate!!! THANK YOU VOLKS!!!!

 

I'm really surprised that they decided to make Belldandy in resin over vinyl. I would have never expected this decision. This tells me then that there is probably no plans to make the rest of the characters from the series. I would have thought Urd would be better represented in vinyl as well.

I'm not really so surprised any more with the Creamy Mami dolls that came out in in resin. I think it was St James who wrote that it is a good way to draw in new collectors from the figure world by making these very iconic characters into resin and showcasing them at JoyFes? Makes sense for business? It seems like a smart way of blending the two sides of their hobby lines and not keeping one very specifically "anime" and the other "not anime".

Belldandy really looks like the later version of Belldandy illustrations to me which is surprising and amazing in a resin doll. I didn't necessarily feel the same way about the resemblance in Mami dolls- though they are gorgeous in their own right. Moreover, it feels like a natural choice to put these action oriented characters onto the SDGr because of the "figma-like flexibility" of the SDGr. I have enjoyed my SDGr dolls even more than DDs for their versatility and ability to hold dynamic poses.

 

Those little Yo devil things are... um... so ugly... I feel bad saying it but OMG, when the post about a yo devil and angel I was expecting something completely different.

The Belldandy is great! But I'm not interested. They nailed me with Yu Morisawa athough I have zero familiarity with the character...

Anyway, I rather like the anime sculpts. I always worry when Volks start getting realistic so I don't mind. I also agree with the Midi size head on the Yo bodies. I think they are trying to make chibi characters but the proportions are NOT working! They need to take a lesson from Kinoko Juice. It's a nice idea though! Just executed poorly...

 

I'm a HUGE Devilman, I really want to see better pictures of this guys. A bit disappointed that they're YoMidi, not a big fan of that line.

Looks like some fans of these manga/anime series are going to be happy. I am a little surprised to see Belldandy. It was my understanding that Oh! My Goddess is an older (but beloved series). I thought if Volks might have released dolls related to a manga a little more current? I was really hoping to see more Rozen Maiden since they just released Rozen Maiden: Zurückspulen. Oh well. Safer for my wallet.

Is anyone planning on going to this Dolpa? I think I will probably go ....

 

I feel the same way! Most of the exciting anime dolls Volks makes seem to always be in DD, so I'm so happy to see Belldandy in resin. I've loved Belldandy for years.

 

Oh! My Goddess is still an on-going manga after all these years, and they still make collectible figures and toys. So I think it is still relevant.

 

Additionally it's also Volks 40th Anniversary Festival (JoyFes) and I believe (?) Belldandy one was on the more popular, iconic garage kits Volks made so they brought her back as a resin doll.

Fransyung- I didn't see the price for Bell but now I am scared.

 

Volks News shows her as 120,750 yen. For a resin doll of a licensed character, I think she's reasonably priced.

 

I didn't realize that manga was still going on, Midori. That makes sense. Thanks! And I'd completely forgotten about those cool garage kits, nakitaninja. I'm sure lots of fans are very happy about her release. I guess I'd kinda love it if Volks did Ichigo from Bleach instead.

 

Oh thank you, InvisibleWings! That's kind of what I was expecting! I am just happy it's not $1500 or $1600! I suppose we'll see when/if she arrives stateside.

Oh yes, pris84 - I totally understand. I was surprised to see a "vintage" Belldandy too but pleasantly so because she looks so lovely. It's funny, I suppose you know you're old when you really consider vintage/old anime characters to be from Rose of Versailles or Aim for the Ace or Brother, Dear Brother.

 

If they make rose of versailles I know a few people who'd kill to get the dolls!
nakitaninja : she is priced higher than SD16 Ryo, and I think higher than Creamy Mami/Yuu Morisawa? For an SDGr girl, it means a hike in pricing. Hopefully the next Dolpa batch won't be so highly priced.

 

Oh my goodness I have been flipping out over tiny Akira Fudou since my friend left me a frantic voicemail about him earlier! At first I wasn't totally interested in getting him due to the weird Yo/Midi combo, but the more I see him the more my inner Nagai fan needs him. I'm a bit sad they're on such out of scale bodies, but at least Akira's little devil hands and feet kind of even it out and make him look more cartoony and less freakish than Ryo (poor little guy). I'd wanted to switch him to a different body, but I just love his little accessories so it looks like that idea is out of the window.
I can't wait for new photos since I'm interested to know if his sculpt has teeth or not!

Hopefully they won't be too difficult to find on the aftermarket either, since this news is a bit too close to the holidays for me to jump up and snatch him right away.

I think the difference for me is that I will be trying to purchase form Volks USA or a vendor stateside if I can and that's sometimes a mixed bag.

At Volks USA SD16 Ryo was/is totally stunning but crazy expensive (for me) at $1513.00 as opposed to the international site that had her listed for 110,000 yen. Though there is usually a difference in pricing, that one was uncommonly high. I believe that's when the exchange rate issue was ongoing so I'll be interested to see what they actually ask for Belldandy here- if we even get her. If I remember correctly they've altered the exchange rate over here again? I have my fingers crossed for the "not insane" range but who knows?

You are totally right though- she is more expensive in general. I, too, wonder if this is licensing or heralding things to come...

 

At first the Yo Midi dolls were an immediate pass for me, I'm not used to those kind of proportions and I'd have to buy an entirely separate wardrobe.... but Satan really does look gorgeous, and even Devilman is slowly starting to grow on me. And I remember the manga really made me cry, like Basara waterfall type crying, so now I want both just so I can keep them together forever

 

Exactly! It's only taken me about 2 hours to go from "Ahahaha oh lord those proportions are awkward but I really love Devilman." to "Well, I guess I need both of them because I can't have an Akira without a Ryo."
I guess can make them other Go Nagai character's outfits too.

Out of curiosity, I wonder if Ryo will be on a YoTenshi body so that he'll be slightly closer to canon?

 

They should definitely do that! I don't really want to see something that will make me just go WHY VOLKS thisissowrong

But then again, I'm considering not keeping the bodies and get a less mini-fied version. I hear that SDC bodies can be ok for that type of head size? But I'll have to research more I guess, since I've never really looked into smaller than 1/6 sized dolls.

 

I personally love all the new YO/Midi heads that are coming out (including ones of this Dolpa even though I don't know the characters), but I still can't get used to the proportion. I really want to see owner pics of them on Midi or similar 1/4 sized bodies. Too bad I am trying my hardest to keep away from 1/4 size...

 

I hope they do! It took me a long time to even phrase the intial question without it sounding totally wrong. A mature looking Ryo doll would actually be pretty neat logistically, but I definitely wouldn't want that many details on a Yo.

At first I was just intending to get Akira's head (He doesn't even need a body! *is shot for such a terrible joke*) and replacing it with a SDC or similar sized body, but then I totally fell in love with his little devil hands and feet. I think that when I get him I'll at least try to keep him on the yo body for a while to see if I can deal with his proportions. It helps that his devil hands/feet are also comically oversized for the yo body and that he has a far more cartoony face than Ryo.

Now comes the question of if they'll make it to the US store. Sometimes licensed character dolls do and sometimes they don't?

I'm still freaking out over little teeth so I haven't had a chance to check if the YoMidis are on YoTenshi bodies.
Edit again: They're both on regular Yo boy bodies. Ryo's head wings appear to have a joint in them. Akira's head wings are one solid piece but his back wings have a joint.

 

Ok. Ok. I really need that Devilman now. Like - NEED. Better start saving cos I don't want to use up my entire "Ludwig funds" for him. But I really, really need that doll. Hope I get lucky in the lottery. Is there some rule of thumb how many % of people entering those lotteries actually do get dolls?

It'll be really interesting to see owner photos/better photos in general, since Akira has a more stylized, anime-esque faceup like you usually see on DDs than Ryo does. Ryo's looks more like what I'm accustomed to seeing on Yos.
I haven't been this excited over a doll in ages!

I love those little Cyborg 009 outfits too. I'd be all over a collection of classic anime/manga costumes for dolls, or even a line inspired by them.

 

I..I did not even realise his hands and feet had claws on them! Oh nooo now I want to keep the original bodies. Or maybe I can get the sdc anyway and use the yomidi body for travel?
