Volks Super Dollfie - SD, SD13, SD16, SD17, SDGr, SDGou & FCS - XXIV

Jan 19, 2019

    1. @pris84 ‘s eagle eyes spotted the date of the AE on this link here :)It’s the 30th of March. Prior to the update on Lieselotte and Luna’s page about the lottery, it had also been mentioned there.

    2. Do the default SD17 hands have a number? I don't want to end up with two sets of default hands. I've decided I'm going to pick up some pastels and sealant from the Volks USA store and attempt some DIY hand blushing. The best part is if I mess it up, I can just wipe them and start over! Not as nerve wracking as completing a face-up!

    3. I'm not completely sure yet, because I don't know what she comes with. I can't find it on her special site. I even checked yahoo japan to see if there were any body photos on listings, but her hands are wrapped with bubblewrap.

      I am leaning towards SD-16-H-02, SD-16-H-03, SD-16-H-06.

    4. I’m having the same issue with the bubble wrapped hands!

    5. So far the only SD17 I've found that specifies a hand number is Black Jack, who is listed as coming with H-01 hands.

    6. @BeyondTime
You can see Oscar's hands pretty clearly in this box opening video around 4:50

    7. Since we already have a good source for Oscar I´m going to share some Andre images, let me know if you need more to identify the hands, there should be plenty. I chose some pics with re-done face ups since I figured you might want to see that too:
Pictures with hands (different owners): Link 1; Link 2; Link 3
Closeup of the respective custom heads:
Andre without face-up (comparison to Rigel); Face up 1; Face up 2; Face up 3

Based on RDean´s video and some other pictures I´m pretty sure both of Oscar´s hands are SD16-H-01. What do you guys think?

Since I can´t open the option-parts link, I would like to know if the option parts are limited in quantity. Does the website state that you may only order one of each? *I´m sure some people here are also looking to get parts and may have interest in group-orders through the marketplace*

    8. @Chobittum - Thank you! I thought I had seen it but could not find it.

@silver sycle - that second custom faceup you linked has me re-evaluting Andre. I didn't really like his default but that really soft look suits him

    9. Ok so Theodore is Black Cat Lucas. Does it mean Ernest is also the same exact head as Dreaming Lucas with the same head number inside then? :?

    10. I dont believe that the SD17 hands have a number (so it makes sense that Blackjack would have the number -01 since they're the only pair). There arent any full (two hands) SD17 option hands. Every SD17 has the exact same pair, and the SD17 hands being offered as blushed are the same pair that come with Andre (and every other SD17) as default. The only other true SD17 option hands are single sets, like the sword holding hand, the clasped hands, or the gun holding hands that often come with Williams or Reisner.

I use the term "true SD17 hands" because the FCS optional hands being offered are interchangeable with SD17 and SDGr/SD13 and don't come with the same string system the SD17 hands do.

    11. Sorry to barge in, but in a moment of weakness I accidentally ordered a Volks F-62 in tan skin. She's just so adorable with lots of character. She'll be my first Volks doll. I'm not really sure what I'm planning to do with her yet.

      • x 12
    12. I think there are a lot of us in here who can say 'I accidentally a Volks', @Stokiaci. :XD:

Welcome, and I hope you have fun with the planning phase! It's always my favorite.

      • x 2
    13. @Stokiaci My whole life is "oops Volks" haha! Congrats on your order, please do share pics when she arrives ^^ What options did you go for?

    14. Glad I'm not the only one! I got the small bust separated sd13 torso with the shorter sd legs, hands 13 and 7. The girl version faceup and gray eyes. I'm sure that's everything, but I feel like i'm forgetting something. I want to get her a straight black wig with bangs. I'm thinking spoiled rich girl in a school uniform. She just has that face!

    15. Lol. I kind of wonder why the wrapped them. I can't recall if my Ami Ayase or Belldandy had their hands wrapped.

Thank you that helps a lot.

Congrats, but we warned, Volks dolls tend to multiply. Sometimes like tribbles.

    16. Oh boy, F62 is my favourite sculpt ever, solid choice!! I’ve also seen one styled the way you’ve planned, and it works really super well. I can’t wait to see her when you’re finished!

I’ve been trying to resist buying a WS F62 and WS F73 this round myself.... I chickened out of F73 last time she was up, and I just can’t get enough of F62 :D Trying to prioritise getting Lieselotte (either winning or giving the scalper my mones) though.

    17. Oh man, Lieselotte is a favorite of mine as well. Also, Lorina and Belle. I almost went for f73 as well, she is a beauty but not really what I'm looking for at the moment. Good luck on getting Lieselotte!

    18. SWD Lucas was in normal skin only. Than important moment. And I never seen swd Lucas, have no idea what is there in head, but I have Ernest, which is I add for marketplace.. But still can check his head, if that helps..)

    19. Ernest and Sweet Dream Lucas's mouths look different to me, but I can't find a great straight on comparison.

    20. I was going to get them but then I reconsidered. The blushing seemed to make her hands look “beat up” (probably the photo), and I don’t usually blush hands anyway. At best, a little flesh-toned nailpolish and I’m good.

I got the H01, H03, and H06 hands, as well as the flat-foot legs. If there is a spare pair in there that are too much like what she already has, I’ll save them in case I have an accident or resell them. I so needed the ones that looked like sword-holding hands because Oscar can’t be having a sword and not be able to hold it once in a while!

    21. These are amazing! Thank you for sharing the links. I love seeing how different Andre looks with different wigs and face-ups. The albino/blonde Andre is gorgeous. How do you find these on Twitter? Are they under a specific hashtag? I don't use Twitter often but it makes me want to start looking around.

There is no limit to the quantity, only a time limit.

This may be a stupid question, but if there is only one pair of default SD-17 hands, then are the other hand options being offered just SD13 or SD16 hands? I guess I'm wondering if this is the ONLY time I will be able to purchase hands that will match his size and skin tone? That will definitely impact how many hands I purchase!

      • x 1
    22. That is something I personally would find interesting, I'm not sure if anyone else would :sweat
If you do start tracking, the #'s for the dolls I have now are:
      27 - SD Bianka (2008 DP Kyoto 5)
      81 - SD17 Williams (2017 one-off)
      18 - SD13 Tsukasa Konoe (2012 one-off)
I really wish I would have taken more notice of this on previous dolls I owned, now.

@silver sycle Thanks for sharing those Andre pics! I've been absolutely loving seeing what owners are doing with him.

@Stokiaci F-62 is very unique and has so much character. First Volks doll, that's awesome!

      • x 2
    23. I've only ever seen them offer the option hands / feet for sale with a doll. If you bought an FCS doll or other LE with the same body and skin you could get more of them, but to the best of my knowledge outside of that you would have to go with after market sellers.

I think it coordinates well with her faceup, but they are a bit too dark for my taste. I'd be tempted to get one pair, but for the price I could get almost three of the others. I do like the coloring on the hands though. She's so pale I really think they will look better with a little pink tint.

It's been ages since they stocked MSC Flat, and it's really expensive on Amazon. I kind of wonder what gives there. Is it like a CFC thing and they can't get it anymore?

    24. Re: optional parts
I'm getting Oscar flat feet and probably an unpainted pair of hands. I think I'll wait until she gets here to order though, just so I can see what she has and determine what I think she needs.

    25. @Stokiaci Congrats on your new girl. I'm also a big F-62 fan. I definitely want another in tan one day! Can't wait to see what you'll do with her.

Here's my Maeve on a SD16 body. She was on a SDGr body for a while but I just switched it to the SD16 body and I think she looks perfect!

    26. She looks perfect on that. Which head is that?

    27. I'm fairly certain that Sweet Dream Lucas and Ernest aren't the exact same sculpt. Looking at my Ernest against pictures of SD Lucas, and SD Lucas' eyes are more closed. The number inside Ernest's head is 151, if anyone wants to check definitively.

      • x 1
    28. Congrats on your first Volks, @Stokiaci . I daresay she'll be the start of many. :P Volks tends to be a bit addictive once you get a taste for them. I just won an auction for a head that will be.. my 18th Volks doll. X_X Oh my. I never thought about that until just now.

      • x 1
    29. Dreaming Lucas’ head number cannot be 151 because he is a super old head. Now I can be sure they are not the same head. Thank you for the information!

    30. Speaking of Mr. Super Clear, if I were to blush some hands using pastels, would it be better to use Mr. Super Clear UV or ZM Finishing Powder Spray to seal them? I don't understand the difference between the two.

    31. I'm fairly certain Ernest is supposed to be a new dreaming version of the Lucas sculpt, though he's not the same as the old one. Sort of like how the four sisters all have different dreaming faces.

If anyone has any other mold numbers I will also happily take them for databasing purposes. :) I still suspect they're a little more malleable than they appear but we won't know without more data! Next time we're changing displays for ours I'll see if I can't get numbers.

    32. I believe finishing powder is meant to be used as a final coat.

      • x 1
    33. I've used both for faceup work, and in my experience Finishing Powder Spray is for the last coat. I've tried using it for the full faceup but it doesn't give the surface enough tooth for the pastels to hang onto. I like MSCUV for the initial coat and layering blushing work, and a shot of ZM for the final coat. ^_^

    34. If you don't have it yet, my Tohya from Dolpa 12 has 28 inside it's head!

    35. Thank you!! She's an F-62. :aheartbea

Just popping in to share a picture of my Kaelin-girl, Honey!
I am so thrilled at Luna and Lieselotte being re-released so I can try for both of them again *w*
Lieselotte is one doll I regret selling so I hope I can get a chance to bring her back into my doll collection! >_<

      • x 9
    37. @XiaoCream, Honey is as sweet as her name! :love

Add Kaelin and Irwin to the F16/Lucas/Chris/Theodore/Ernest crowd — and don’t Sasha and Masha belong in there, too? Then there’s Madoka and Shizu — how do you tell them apart? I should look at the sculpt numbers in some of my dolls’ heads, but I’m lazy, and hate pulling off wigs because it means I have to wrestle them back on again :sweat

      • x 1
    38. @beamlette Don't forget about Kai... or School A. The Lucai family is large  I'd actually love confirmation on whether Sasha/Masha were the same as each other or the Lucas sculpt. I suspect the former is true and the latter is not, but...

Volks has a lot of "twin" sculpts (true twins or not), but in the end most of them differ in some concrete way. A lot are either a normal/white resin split or a boy/girl split (or both). Some of them are a little more non-specific; the 01 crowd all have their own styling, but they can still be hard to tell apart at times. Most of those have their roots in older dolls though, when styling = name even if the mold was the same. That's not as true anymore.

    39. I need to do some cabinet re-arranging to try to find a place for Oscar, so if you guys want I can pull out Kura (my Dreaming Lucas) and check his number just for curiosity's sake. I have an F-16, an Irvin and a Kaelin as well, so if anyone wants to know for sure what the whole gang's numbers are, I should have them, along with both the open-eyed and Sweet Dream School A. I don't have an old F-28, an DWC 1 or a Chris to check, or a Sasha or Masha.... Someone else will have to find us those.

      • x 1
    40. @Kim I know what you mean! I think Volks´ default face ups have become a lot darker over the years and make heavy use of airbrushing/pastels (Just like the trend has been for all face ups recently). Oscar and Andre have both quite "heavy" company face ups and were painted in a way to make their faces appear more ´serious´ - without the face-up, they look so different (and I actually prefer both of them with more `soft´ features).

@TabletopPhantom I mostly find pictures because they are retweeted/liked by the Japanese and Korean accounts I follow (I also followed some people who got Oscar so I guess it makes sense that they would be more likely to share RoV-tweets.) If I´m searching for specific stuff I usually just look up words like アンドレ - then look through recent and/or most popular results. Most people don´t mention the name of a sculpt everytime they post about it (and especially not after they gave them a new name), so if you are trying to find pictures of a specific SD, it´s easier to find owners based on one tagged-post/tweet they made when they got a doll. When you look through their account you will often see many more-recent posts of that doll which aren´t labeled so they don´t show up in the search.

      @ekala Hope this helps:

90 - Lieselotte (January 2015 release) but first her release August 2010
95 - Victorique de Blois; one release in April 2011
*Lieselotte´s numbers are inverted between head and headplate while Victorique´s aren´t so there is a chance it's actually 06 but I personally think it´s less likely*

So I guess they label the limited heads based on their release date like the FCS-sculpts?
Since Nell´s SD17 Williams is 81 (first release was October 2009?) which is a high number, this would mean the numbers don´t differentiate between sizes - at least not within the larger dolls.
How we could check at least part of this idea -
      - Is Charlotte´s number either 89 or 91?
      - Which dolls were released between August 2010 and April 2011? There should be at least 4 or more but we won´t get a definitive answer like this since we don´t know the numbers of the dolls released simultaneously with Lieselotte and Victorique.

Another possibility is that the dolls might not be in perfect order if one sculpt was designed before another but somehow released later... but in that case, we would know the order in which the heads were sculpted. (I honestly doubt it´s much different than their release-order)
.....ANYWAY I´m theorizing too much but I like the idea of compiling sculpt-numbers. I hope more people will take a moment to check their doll(s)´ head(s) the next time they play with them.^^

    41. I wanted to double check because if they didn't sculpt a new head for Theodore, I suspect they probably just used dreaming Lucas as Ernest (which is the dreaming version of Theodore). But that is not the case so head number inside proved that I was wrong.

Speaking of that, I have so many question in terms of the twin sculpts like the old Michele and re-released Michele, and Anais and Tae, Liz and Mai etc etc etc. Are they the same exact head (as in same number carved inside) or not. Volks don't really make it clear for us unless we have both heads XD

      • x 1
    42. While we are still on the head's number, I also try to figure out the head number on some dolls such as Charlotte, Lieselotte, Belle, Ami, Jun Tachibana, and Oscar. Aren't they supposed to be special sculp without head number? I'm still a newbie for Volks BJD, and I'm also concerned if I could switch head on different body such as SDGR, SD13, SD17?

    43. @demi.yu Limited editions (Charlotte, Lieselotte, Belle, Ami, Jun Tachibana, Oscar etc.) have a specific name. But when you check inside their heads you will see a specific number carved inside next to the Volks-logo - that´s most likely how Volks can identify a head if you want to exchange it for a new one. We are still trying to figure out the specific rules for those numbers, that´s why we are trying to collect them right now.
FCS-heads are different: They are numbered and people call them by their number - they don´t have real "names"

As for which heads fit on which bodies - I´m sure other users will be able to help more with that. I only know that some sizes aren´t compatible but others are:
SD10 heads tend to fit SD13, SDGr and DearSD (at least most(?) girls, I´m not sure about all heads)
SDGr heads should be able to fit on SD10 and SD13?
SD16 heads can fit on SDGr girl bodies but again I´m not sure if that´s always the case.
Then there are other things like bodies made to fit larger heads so the doll can be "aged up" like Yo-midi whose heads fit SDmidi and DearSD who shares heads with SD10.
Bodies of the same general ´size´ don´t have to be able to share heads: correct me if I´m wrong but I think only SDgou heads fit the SDgou body because the neck is quite wide?
In general, I think heads may fit but still don´t look "right" on a specific body - that is the biggest issue with swapping heads between body types. Of course, a sculpt can also look better on a different body - I personally find myself wanting some older SD heads now after seeing them as a DearSD, while many like to give classic SD-sculpts (Anais, Michele etc) a more mature look by putting them on SDGr bodies.

btw. I don´t own any FCS dolls, is their sculpt-number carved into the head as well? I assume that´s the case.

    44. Boy, nothing makes it more obvious that you're in a niche hobby than when your Volks order arrives containing accessories that will allow your boy dolls to hold hands.
      :XD::XD::XD::XD:

It will be a bit before I can take photos though, as our apartment is still undergoing storm damage repairs. :/

    45. @silver sycle I can confirm Charlotte’s number is 91 - my version is from her re-release in 2015.

    46. SD16 girl heads will fit on SDGr boy bodies...
That's Dragonfly. He's a Narasaki mod head that I did exactly that with.

A lot of the SD-range heads work on various bodies. I have my one-off SD13 Cecile on an SD17 bod, an SD13 F-15/Syo head on an SD10 girl body and an FCS F-43 (typically done as a girl-) on an SDGr boy body. A couple of my guys who started out on SDGr bods were switched over to the regular SD13s, too. Likewise a couple of the SD13 guys inherited the SDGr bodies.

    47. Thanks, that is a really nice sculpt. Really love outfit and wig too. You did a beautiful job with her.

    48. Call me crazy, but when I was looking at the video, I thought Oscar’s hands looked like what I like to call “standard flat hands”, or the very neutrally-held hands I see most dolls come with when they don’t have a special hand or pair of hands included. When I look at the H-01 for Oscar, there appears to be more of a curve in the pinky, ring, and middle fingers, especially noticable when looking at the one turned with the palm visible. They seem a softer version of the “point”, or if turned palm-up, it could be a “beckoning” gesture. The doll that RDean has doesn’t seem to have as much bend in the finger joints.

To clarify some sort of comparison of the “difference” I see, I jumped over to the Volks Japanese site, and looked at the SDMidi hand shapes. The H-01 for the SD16 option part reminds me more of the shape of the SDMidi H-04 or H-05.

It’s entirely possible I am wrong, but I want to believe the logic that they would not sell the same parts that the original set already has as option parts...otherwise, I figure they’d offer extra pairs of the heeled feet in case you break one.

    49. @demi.yu Based on both how the FCS system works and a general range of one-offs, it can be assumed that any head SD, SD13, SDGr, SD16 (girl), or DSD will fit on any other body within that range. (Whether they look good is a matter of opinion! They should fit, though.) If there's a particular sculpt you're interested in I can let you know what sizes I've seen Volks release it on (or you can see that yourself on the site).

I'm not sure about SD16 (boy)/SD17 & SDGou heads/bodies - Kondou & Yukinojo haven't been on anything other than SD16/Gou and Claude swaps between them but I'm not convinced the Beast head and the Prince head aren't separate. Otherwise, the SD17 boys are... really only released on SD17 bodies. Sometimes some of the 13/Gr boys get released as SD17 though, so...?

      Thanks everyone for the numbers!!

Also if it helps - this is a good reference from Volks for SD16-H-01 through H-04 (for Oscar), and then there's this or this for the SD17 & usual option hands (for Andre).

    50. SD16 heads can also fit SD17 bodies. I have a Pearl head on a SD17 body and the fit is perfect.
I also have a SD head on a SDGr body and a SD13 head on a SD16 body.

    51. I didn't notice if anyone saw this post: スーパードルフィー Super Dollfie

But I was trying to figure it out. Is there gonna be another head plate/are the replacing the old one with this one? Or are they showing a fake? Google Translate was not helpful in my understanding what this is about.

    52. They say they've had too many people sending them recasts for head exchange, so now the headplate must be included with the exchange. This is the updated version of the headplate? Or these are just examples of headplate? The text doesn't explain.

    53. Don't they not return the headplate when they give you the exchanged head though, and that's why people will sometimes take them off before sending the heads in?

EDIT// Ah, I read the full exchange change page, and it looks like they will be giving the plates back now. They do mention it may arrive back with scratches though, haha.

What an awkward conversation that must be. Since trade in is available for Korea buyers as well, I wonder why they've never introduced it to their USA market?

    54. @silver sycle Oh wow, I've never known that it is possible to exchange head for the new one. How does that work? Or that service is only available in Japan? My plan is to attend Dopa LA in September and get my first one-off model if available. If I might be lucky and get one, I will start collect head to save budget LOL. You were right about some people switch head on another body for more mature look. Some heads were made on SDGR body, but I want to switch them on SD16 body.

@ekala I love Jun Tachibana head but I'd like to use SD16 body for her. Some ebay sellers list Jun Tachibana SD-Yo something ( I have no knowledge on this body type), and I wonder if that head could fit SD16?

    55. Heres some more numbers for you :)

      Belle 115

Also since I had access to the doll room I checked on Sasha and Masha

      Sasha has 16
Masha also has 16 but she also has Sasya in joined handwriting carved on the headcap bottom and on the side inside
I also checked F16 because I thought maybe it was same because of the number but it said inside F-16

I only know the difference because my relative has standing plastic cards with the name of the model in the display cabinets because they look identical to me

But then again, I also think a lot of Volks dolls look very similar so maybe my judgement isnt good

@demi.yu You can try the YoSD Jun on the SD16 but its going to look horrible and the head neck opening will not fit the neck at all! :shudder
YoSD are the Volks infants, they are 25+cm. The heads are very small, I really really really dont think you should do that!
Stay with SD, SD13, SD9, DearSD and SDgrB or SDgrG for SD16 hybrids

    56. I have an old F-28! I'll pop his wig off tonight and see what's in there. ^_^ (I also have a Maria/Shultz, who is also part of the Lucai family but in MSD which is a whole 'nother kettle of fish.) My other SDish Volks are a Syo/Show, F-20, F-36, and a Kanata, but apart from Show I don't think any of those guys have look-alikes.

Thanks @ekala for compiling so much data for us! <3

    57. @GreenTeaSlug Brilliant!! Thank you for the confirmation! As far as I know the only difference is that Sasha is beauty white and Masha is regular white, and with mellowing I would guess it would be v. difficult to tell the difference between them.

@demi.yu The YoSD Jun will definitely not fit - you'll need one that was originally released on an SD, SD13, or SDGr body. You can see examples of the SD Jun here and the YoSD Jun here - they're quite different!

@c4tbus I'm pretty sure it's just for the Junichi Nakahara fashion collection, if that helps?

      @tenshi_no_korin Thank you! I know Dante won't mind. ;)

Also, yes, they're stopping any head exchanges (or Satogaeri services - basically anything that involves a head - not sure if pure bodywork will require a matching head?) that don't have headplates. This was always sort of iffy before (they reserved the right to reject your doll, and I'm sure they still do) but it's a hard line now. No headplate, no exchange. They did have in their instructions before to remove headplates prior to giving dolls over to protect them, but now you're supposed to leave them on and Volks will deal with them (either by replacing them or removing them & re-gluing them themselves).
They do mention that if you've lost your headplate they will do an individual investigation, so if there's an honest issue there they'll help you out. Trade-in hasn't been available to international clients besides Korea as far as I'm aware, and I don't even think they have access anymore now that the Sumika is closed...
