I'm hoping to be able to buy my first doll in a few months, and the one I want to try to find is a Volks SDC full set. I've read a lot of the information about this kind of doll here onsite, but I still have some questions and would love to hear any tips or tricks that owners have. I don't really have any visual artistic skills, so I'm glad that I fell in love with a doll that already has a face-up I like and the kind of joints I want already. I have a history of liking the Volks SDM size, but I've always liked the clothes that are made for the larger size dolls better. I've seen the list of other doll companies that make outfits and shoes that can fit an SCD, but I would like to hear about your own findings. I think that the clothes Volks makes for this size makes the doll look like an elementary school student, and I like the "muture" or teenage outfit look. I've also read that the legs on the SDC can be "kicky." What does that mean exactly?
I have an SDC girl! It takes a bit of a wait but they do come up second hand (mostly Japanese second hand like Mandarake, Dollyteria, Mercari, Y!j auctions, but I've also seen them on DoA MP), unfortunately Volks doesn't seem to be continuing this line with new dolls, though, and is now mainly servicing SDM in the 1/4 bracket only. Since most of those dolls are older, pleather items in their fullsets have often begun to deteriorate so you will probably want to look for new shoes for instance, and often their old faceups might need refreshing. Like with any second hand doll, some will need a bit more work to be spruced up than the others. The doll I have is lovely but the posing can be an absolute pain without any help. I don't know about the boy body but the knees on the girls are "kicky", which means they snap back very easily and make it hard to have the doll stand reliably (great example from @/ramendoodles here). I have hot glue sueded them which has helped a bit, and wired the elbows because the joints in the elbows are not super great, but it's definitely a doll I would get a stand for just in case. As for clothing - SDC girls are more or less just as tall as MSD/SDM, but thinner, so some items might be a bit baggy on them. Boys are a bit taller than SDM I think but I don't have experience clothing them unfortunately. They are a bit chonkier than slim minis, however, so very tight-fitting and more mature-looking things for minifee size, for instance, will not fit. I would browse ACBJD or Legenddoll and see if any clothes catch your eye, and then just compare the measurements. SDC are more mature than some other Volks dolls but are still relatively childlike compared to most mature minis so finding more mature styles for them takes a bit of searching. Shoes will need to be SDM/MSD size, and some 1/4 shoes can be a bit too tight, but I've found some nice pairs for my girl so it's not too big of a challenge. Hope this answers a few of your questions but feel free to ask whatever you still want to know! SDC are lovely dolls, even if they need a bit of work to bring out the best in them. There's also a discussion thread for them here.
