Faceups Volks FCS custom face-ups!

When ria_ria ordered mine for me we picked out a couple of reference photographs for various features of his face, blushing etc, but I also wrote a little bit of his character that I hoped they could capture. As far as I recall, it was something along the lines of: 'He's very devious, and knows a lot more than he lets on. He always has an amused smirk on his face'

When I made the order for Sami, I wanted a little girl with a face that reminded me of autumn, so there's a lot of orange. But I also wanted something that looked soft and I'm pretty happy with how Volks did it.

This is after she arrived and I took her out of the box (obviously wigless, but at least she has her eyes in.)





It seems the bangs on her wig cover her eyebrows, but I think I like it better that way. *shrugs*

 

They will do their best to match pictures, though make sure your reference pics are of Volks dolls only, or only show vague enough parts of a non-Volks doll that it's not apparant it's anotherc company. They won't say anything, but it will still make them pretty uncomfortable.

 

bumping this! i would like to see more as well my F-17 is arriving in oct and i hope he's as gorgeous as the dolls here

i think that volks does a better job when given actual description of the face up, and ref pictures, not just an extensive background/characteristics of the doll :d

 

VOLKS did a fantastic job of interpreting what I asked for with Umibe (MSD F-13).

 

I got Fury at the same time I ordered Reiko's pretty Sami. I gave reference pics for mine, as I ordered in Sato and don't speak much Japanese. ^^; But I had about 4 pics, and specified what part of each doll I wanted from each pic - like the eyebrows from this, the eyecolour from this, the lips from this etc.

The guy was really fun and helpful, and enthusiastic about my choices.

I don't have the original picture because they needed it, but here's essentially what I wanted. I think my favorite part is his eyebrows!

 

When I ordered my FCS around 14 months ago at the LA Sumika I provided them with a description and a few drawings. BTW, she does have a small amount of blush on her cheeks ; since she's a snowskin it just doesn't photograph well...and, yes, her hair is pink.

 

Oh, I thought for sure I was probably just gonna have to wipe the face-up off when I ordered my FCS ganguro girl. How could a makeup artist, without talking to me, understand that, yes, I wanted ganguro make, but more current and in-style now vs. the popular conception of the panda-make? Would they even do it? And, considering the negative attitude 99% of Japan has toward Gals, would they not be able to make her look, gasp, pretty?

Not only did the Volks artist combine the elements of the different photos I provided, they greatly exceeded my expectations. I mean... LOOK at her!



Or this girl, I said I really liked Kurumi and one of the FCS heads on a shelf near by. Besides that, I pretty much told them "I like pink and red in a doll's make up, but not too much." Poor Volks! Anyway, look how great this one turned out!

No, but I did use photoshop to resize the images and crop to build a mock-image of how the doll would look. For the most part, I tolkd Volks some ideas of what I want, what I DON'T want (no teeth. No dark corners in lips. pinks in the eyeshadow, which you can't see 'cause of her eyelashes of Doom.) and told the person taking my order that for the most part, the artist had free range. I gave examples of other ganguro, manba, makeup pages that I liked and let the artist have at it. I think the less specific you are in your head, the least likely you are to be disappointed.

She is a BW F01.
This is the description I wrote for the make-up.

PERSONALITY

She will be like a ghost, very serious and with a mysterious personality. She is not sad, but she is not happy either, I want her to have a calm expression like she is about to go into a deep sleep.



EYEBROWS

o Calm, soft eyebrows, natural (see example photos). Medium thickness, (like one-off SD13 Lucas Sweet Dream). Not too long and not too far from the eyes. She will wear a white wig so they need to be light.



EYES

o airbrush style light red shadow around eyes (top and under), to imply deep eyes, tiredness and ghostly features. Darker nearer the nose but fading to a paler color at outer edges
o light red inner eyeliner, natural looking
o thin, wispy and long lower eyelashes, light color



LIPS

o strong vertical lines, in light color
o very glossy
o pale lips, soft pink
o diffuse edge, airbrush style
o serious, no smile
o paint teeth



FACE

o faint color, like a ghost. Basic colors would be pinks and grays
o very pale cheek shadowing



WIGS

o she will wear white wigs or pale blonde wigs.

for akito, my F17, what i did was to write his personality, backstory, likes and dislikes, and asked volks to come out with a faceup based on this. ^^ because i didn't really trust my colour coordination at that time

so basically what i told them (in terms of his personality) as far as i can remember was that he's a contract killer, calculatingly cold when carrying out his assignments (and perhaps even enjoying it). he's also intellectual, with a cynical sense of humour and a mischievous charm.

but despite my lack of specific makeup details, i think volks did a smashing job! i was really pleased when i first saw him

 

When I did my order for my F30 boy I asked for a combination of features from Reisner (eyes and blushing), Amelia (eyebrows), and one of the model heads they had there(lips).
I gave them a bit of info on the personality (shy sweet boy), but I believe pictures speak louder than words so I based most of the face-up on the pictures.

I am extremely happy with the results, he's become on of my favorite boys

 

Not only did I bring in photos of a couple of other F-35s Volks had done, partly to illustrate the smirk I wanted them to paint, I also had them model his personality off of Huck Finn with the look of young Elijah Wood when he played Huck in an old Disney movie:

As well, I told them I wanted lips done a little bit like Tony's, at least color wise, which was a good choice with the sunlight skin.

 

I bought my sunlight F-17 from Ria_Ria. He actually used to belong to her. I had been planning to get one for ages and ages, and when she put him up for sale, he was perfect.

I didn't pick his FCS faceup, but it's exactly what I would have picked! The colour, the angle of the eyebrows...right down to the darker eyebrow colour! I was extremely lucky. Like getting the perfect FCS without the wait!

He has quite a lot of heavy red coloured blushing, but it suits his skin colour perfectly.
It's so lovely in RL, but doesn't seem to turn up in many photos!


There is one thing I'm not too keen on about his faceup, and that's the odd bright pink corners to his lips. You can see them well in this pic:


The rest of it is so perfect that it really doesn't bother me though!

 

I ordered an FCS F-20 to represent one of my very old and dear characters early last year when I was in Japan. Fortunately, I had completely lucked out and, just by chance, found a recent photo of the j-rocker on which I had loosely based the character's appearance in a magazine I had bought... and his new look was exactly how I had always envisioned the character. When I pulled it out, the guy writing down my order said "A-ha!" because it matched so well with everything I had picked out so far (mold, wig, eyes). He must've thought I was making a doll of the actual musician!

Anyway, they did an excellent job and I am really pleased with the results. Here is the photo, Yuki from the band Rice:



I only asked for the eyebrows to be slightly darker and for very light blushing on the cheeks.

I ordered Aree-chan (msd f13)myself and brought many photo refences to show which faceup styles I like from volks. I asked her to look like this photo with some features from huis ten bosch toppi

I ordered my Ria (msdf18) through ria_ria I sent photo references and a color swatch for lips. Her lips were lighter than expected but all in all I'm very happy

 

My Volks MSD F-18 girl, Fiona! Volks did an amazing job, just what I asked for! I have Nekoiyuzu to thank for that, she ordered her for me~

I would like a Volks doll some day, but the problem for me is that the face-ups on the website can look so plain in comparison to user pics and custom face-ups. I have a horrible imagination with how molds might look with different makeup.. so..

I was lucky enough to have gotten on the FCS list at one of the NYC Dollpas. I loved having the experience of working directly with Mikey! I had done research on what info I'd need to speed the process, so things went pretty smoothly, despite the language barrier, because I brought a list. I had wanted the eyebrows much thicker (almost like Brooke Shields or Kathy Ireland) and had even used a photo of another Volks doll as reference, but after months of anticipation I wasn't about to send her back to Japan over a silly little thing like that! I have also found out that her eyes, GE-04 in 18mm, have since been discontinued, so: SCORE!!

They were also selling basic dolls at the Dollpa and I realized that buying a plain Megu and sending her head to a custom face-up artist would have been several hundred dollars less expensive. However, through FCS I was able to order a lot of other things at the same time which turned out to be totally worth it: Like sueding the joints; Seam removal and UV coating the body; A carrier bag and of course, that cute "Welcome Home" outfit!!

 

I'm looking to do my third FCS from Volks, another MSD and came across this thread. I can't believe I never dropped a shot of my FCS F13 here. I took in TONS of reference pics, literally, a folder full because the make up on my first FCS was a disaster. They definitely got it right with Orion. I was told they had never done one like this before:

Huh... I never added Galen (my white resin F-33) to the thread... I asked for a lighter, largely grey-toned faceup for him.



I pretty much repeated the same instructions for my "other" zephyr (Lotus, who's a white resin F-41), about a year later...



I really love the consistency between the two, in spite of having them done at different times. I think including a picture of Galen as a reference for Lotus helped a lot with that.

And then there's Sannanjae (sunlight resin F-31)... My instructions for him were pretty basic, though I did include a reference image of the eyebrows I had in mind. I wanted him to have a very natural, though slightly concerned look. I'd say Volks came through pretty well with him, though the brow color was a bit lighter than I expected. I can forgive that. XD

 

If it's alright, I'd like to give this thread a bump. I'm planning on ordering an FCS in the near future, and would like to see more of their custom faceups.
