Volks DearSD 43cm Discussion Part 2

Jul 28, 2017

    1. Part of the reason many lines are limited is simply due to manufacturing capacity. They'd run the artists ragged if they had to finish more dolls, and it's not a company interested in outsourcing that kind of labor.
The DearSDs were introduced by Mrs. Shigeta as a simpler concept doll for people who want a comforting size without the jointing complexity of the taller SDs. I think one of the reasons, aside from being disgustingly adorable, that they are sought after is their ease of play. If you have certain limits - poor hand/arm strength, lack of patience or dexterity, etc - this size can still utilize a lot of the SD items without as much physical strain on the owner.
I had a much easier time carrying my DearSD around yesterday than my SD16, for sure. I actually swapped all of my SDs onto the smaller body for many of the above reasons, so now I have a gap in my collection between DearSD and SDGr.

    2. Others have already replied to this about why Volks doesn't just sell more Dear SDs in general, but from what I've seen with Volks is that things are limited as they generally do all their dolls in house more or less so you pretty much know who created the sculpt or have seen the face-up artist that has done the face-up of your doll if you ever have gone to an event or watch any of their social media posts. Like, their face-up artists have names (HARU, Kinoko, Ciera, Rumina, Luluco, Tsukimi, Yui, aone, etc)! If you have ever heard their face-up artists talk about their work, you can tell they enjoy what they do, take their time with their work, and even have fun doing subtle differences with each face-up if they get a chance to. I like to think of Volks as like a big Mom-and-Pop store chain. Yes, for other things maybe they can mass produce their stuff. But for their BJDs, it's really more personalized and done in small batches and are more like passion projects.

Oh for sure, they could probably make more money if they just shell out the dolls in mass produced fashion. But think of the poor face-up artists! Like, seriously, what is their face-up artist count up to nowadays? Does anyone remember back when it was like maybe 2-5? Hahaha. Like, no joke. If their face-up artist count is still small (let's say between 6-20), it very likely we are just seeing what a small team can shell out under reasonable working circumstances. And they are not just working on Dear SD faces here. Think of all the Disney, FFXIV, anime, and manga collabs they do all throughout just one year. So with just the face-up aspect, it can explain why they only do limited runs for Dear SDs each year.

Reasons for why Dear SDs sell out, have a high resell value, and make them desirable. Hmm...consistent Volks quality of product ranging from resin quality, structure of the bodies, and the sculpts. Also, the head sculpts tend to be valuable in themselves for collectors. Like, no longer available older head sculpts but in new resin. I've seen people take the heads and place it on an SD10, SD13, SDGr body Volks body, or on other company bodies as the head sculpt is their Grail doll head. Or they already have a head (not necessarily a Volks head) and just need the Dear SD body.

Sure, there are other baby dolls out there from other companies, but alas...there's another thread on DoA that's kind of old that compares the Volks Dear SD bodies with other baby dolly bodies equivalents and you can kind of see why Volks Dear SD bodies are like a good middle ground doll body for a certain aesthetic. Especially if you have a non-Volks head. The Volks Dear SD is not too skinny, not too short. It's that Goldilocks perfectly in the middle just right.

As someone with health problems, the Dear SDs are a blessing if you still want resin dollies to carry around with you. I used to carry around my Volks SD10 and SD13 girls before when I was healthy. When my body started failing, I would only carry around my Yo-SD. When the Dear SDs came out, it was nice to have something bigger than a YoSD but lighter and more manageable than bigger SDs. And it's rather endearing to see how they look in SD10 and SD13 clothing as it's kind of like seeing a little kid playing dress up in their mom's clothes and it's baggy on them. That, and I have pretty bad asthma and skin sensitivity problems, and so far, Volks dolls haven't caused me any issues whereas other dolly companies aggravate my asthma or skin problems. And believe me, I've tried to branch out with other dolly companies but my health stuff tells me right away if certain dollies are a hard no.

Plus...pudgy chibis are freakin' cute. When you are surrounded by abs and lean, tall lanky bodies or super boobies or model thin bodies or whatever, sometimes it is a breath of fresh air to have chub in your doll.

    3. The named Volks artists are generally not the ones doing each doll's faceup. They create the designs for them and other Volks faceup artists replicate the design.

One-offs are the models that are painted by the named artist. I don't know of any DSD one-off releases, so I assume all released DSD were not painted by the named artists. This doesn't include any one-off heads put on a DSD body, of course.

    4. Also speaking for myself, once you have them you just get more, not less! So if owners are hanging onto them, you naturally see less on the secondhand markets too.

Also the newer combinations (Lana/Leo/etc) are harder to find than the first waves which were very 4 Sisters centric - I think Kira and/or Nana must be the most released by volume, at least to start with.

    5. Great that there is already thread about DSD. Lots to learn. Thank you for sharing valuable information! New owner of my 1st ever Volks doll & they are both DSD. Double trouble :))

    6. @snowgray how did I miss this post! She is STUNNING!!!

@nintendallie Congratulations! :D You are so lucky she is so special!!

    7. @nintendallie Your Nayu is so cute! F-07 is such a versatile and cute sculpt despite its oldschool melonheadness, haha!

    8. I’m thinking that I need to buy stands for my girls. Does anyone know if Dolfie Stand (M/Saddle Type) will work?

    9. There’s another DSD in my home, this time a Komame kitty! ‍⬛ It took a while to work out some logistics after LA Dolpa this year, so she had a long journey!

    10. :whee: all these new DSDs are such a joy to see! I wish I could have been at LA Dolpa~ I would have tried for the DSD Tiara. I loved all the Komame themed outfits. @MilkyTea : Your DSD Lana is so beautiful! Volks did such a great job on her makeup and design. @nintendallie : F07 is such a cutie pie! Love the onesie.

    11. I could be wrong, but I don’t expect the DSDs to have a lottery online because they usually don’t. But that’s my guess!

      • x 2
    12. @Heartplace : I don't know if they will make it to online sales... it's possible, I got my DSD Megohime and DSD Vanessa via online lotteries, but seems like it's very uncommon like MilkyTea said.

    13. Would anyone who owns a Nayu/Nao head kindly let me know what the head circumference is for this sculpt? Will 8-9” wigs work for this head or is 9-10” more fitting? I’ve got Nayu on the way and I’m wig shopping for her. Thank you :whee:!

    15. Does anyone know if DSD can wear SD geta feet? Thanks!

    16. @QuietYurei, yesterday I looked at one of my Dear SD's feet, and I'm doubtful as to how well it would work. Dear SD don't have ankle balls like SD; their feet and ankles are one piece, and attach to the elastic and s-hook with a string tied to the foot's ankle, similar to how SD17 and SD16 attach their hands.

Volks doesn't sell ankle balls with their SD geta feet, so you'd have to take ankle balls from an SD, and even then, I'm not sure if the SD ankle ball would fit in/on the Dear SD lower leg.

Volks' newer geta style shoes are made to use on non-geta feet, so the older geta feet aren't really necessary any more.

      Hope this helps!

    17. Thank you so much, that is really good information, I still do not know a lot about the different Volks bodies. I only own one SDM currently. BUT, since you mentioned that the geta shoes can be worn on non-geta feet, that absolutely solves my problem and I can probably fit a pair of sd geta or zori reasonably well on a dsd then. :P Thanks for letting me know all that. :)

    18. It’s also not too hard to find official DSD-sized zori! There have been several releases of girls in kimono, and you may be able to nab one of the outfit sets secondhand. Good luck!

    19. What a beauty! I love this head sculpt so much, reminds me of the manga Nana!

    20. I’m not the only one who had this idea, but I am pretty happy with Shampoo on DearSD!

    22. I finally got to taking some photos, here is my Jun Tachibana on Dear SD :chibi:chibi:chibi
      [IMG]
...plus a hybrid, Angell Studio Ondine, who I put on a Dear SD body :dance:dance
my Jun needed a friend, and my Ondine happens to have similar face proportions, I couldn't get it out of my head, so I shrinked her :D:D

    23. Sorry if this has been asked before, I tried researching but couldn’t find the information. Can SDs wear DearSD clothing?

    24. It depends on the clothing. The BTSSB DSD sets will also work on the SDs (10, 13 etc) but need a different blouse and an underskirt for length.
Some things will work, some will be too small.

      • x 1
    25. The main difference is arm length and leg length (both shorter on DSD). The torso is pretty similar. So expect long sleeves to be too short on an SD, and skirts or trousers to be much shorter as well.

      • x 2
    26. Also, a lot of the recent releases that are marked as DSD and MSD (like this one) are definitely out in terms of being wearable by an SD. This one is cut smaller than old DSD releases, and has elastic to tighten it to MSD size; it fits DSD very snugly.

@MilkyTea, your Shampoo looks adorable! Lol I also put mine on the DSD body, too. Those cheeks are so baby!

    27. Thanks everyone for the replies! They have been helpful in my navigating this concern.

    28. Hi! I am joining here because I have DSD Elsa coming soon. :dance What size wig does she wear? I know that it will be SD size but some heads like Mai wears 8-9 while four sisters wear 9-10 iirc. I probably wont touch her default sets so trying to prepare stuffs for her :kitty1.

    29. I got the DSD BTSSB set and its sooo cute, but doesn't come with a blouse. For those who have it, what blouse do you pair with it?

      • x 3
    30. There was a separate Volks set called “Stem set” made for the DearSD which was a blouse, bloomers and sock set. I think Volks’ logic was that these Btssb sets could be used for both SD and DearSD, so offering just the dress, headband and shoes could satisfy both sizes and then collectors could make the decision to buy the Stem set or just another blouse and bloomer that Volks offered. Hope that helps.

      • x 2
    31. @pris84 I’m curious to see that set. I assumed BTSSB sets without the blouse etc were simply picked apart. When was it sold separately?

    32. I think a stretchy 8-9 would work. But also 9-10 if it isnt too loose.

      • x 1
    33. Thank you! It's a totally new size to me and I mainly collect 70cm boys so I probably try their wigs first on Elsa and see what size I need :XD:

    34. Thanks for the info! I knew the blouse was sold separately, but didn't know the logic behind it. My friend told me it can be hard to find, so I was curious if anyone else who bought it without the house set had any cute blouses they bought and paired with it! :D

    35. No. Those sets did not include blouse, bloomers and stockings. The front of your packing has a list the contents in Japanese (plus the small picture in the bottom right corner). If a person adopted a DearSD in that outfit, then it came with the blouse, bloomers and socks. The outfits on their own (including the pink and the cream ones) did not include them.

It’s this set : (scroll a bit down)

    36. Like I don’t think their heads are as big as Nono for example. I have Anna. And I’m fairly certain what fits Nono or Mimi is loose on Anna. Not by a lot but still loose. And you can always use something like a silicone bracelet as a wig cap. :P

    37. I see. Thank you for the explanation! Since I dont have any long wig I just grabbed some cheap secondhand ones in a bundle for now. I hope at least one of them fits :eusa_pray

I probably want to have a Mai one day..

    43. Does anyone know if the 10th Anniversary Dear SDs come with an order sheet for extra hand parts?

    44. You know, I know the most recent BTSSB outfits weren't made for DearSD but I was wondering if anyone has tried putting them on a DSD for science? I'm sure most of it is too large (definitely the undershirts) but I wonder...

    45. Here you go, @lunar-dream304. Of course the sleeves are long; Vanessa didn't fasten the cuff snaps, lol. And the waist snap on the dress took some effort.

Yu Morisawa: I told you it was going to be too big for you. Stick to the DearSD versions!
Vanessa: But -- but -- but... **flaps sleeves while fighting back tears**
Yu Morisawa: if it's any consolation, the headband fits, sweetie!

    48. We got snow overnight! I got a touch too excited about bringing Violet out for a photoshoot; I didn't charge my camera's battery enough and her wig did not want to behave. It came off with a touch, I swear. Didn't help that my fingers were getting numb.

So I got one decent shot of Violet hanging out in a snowy tree:
      [IMG] (Link)

And then (after more fighting the wig and the camera cough cough) she realized that snow means cold and decided it would be best to head back inside and join Megu under a pile of blankets and pillows.

How're folks's dolls getting ready for the season? Other than freezing their wigs off, of course

    49. Question for those with official Volks stands for their DSDs: do you prefer the waist grip or the saddle type? I'm currently setting up a shelf for my girls and I'd like to use the official Volks stands since they seem to be the least visually obtrusive, but I can't figure out which type would be the most stable for display. I was thinking the waist grip would be the most stable and have the most versatility for posing, but I'm not 100% sure!

Dolly tax: Mai, impatiently waiting on the miniature doll pram I ordered her for christmas lol

    50. I bought waist stand & i'm disapointed. Had to reorder saddle one. It was very hard to use with full fluffy dresses. Hard to push doll through metal holders & fix it in place. Even sideways doll wont fit so you have to expand holder. And then squeeze it back otherwise no support. Its soo much easier to sit doll down & just adjust height on saddle one.

      • x 1
    51. Thank you so much for your experience! I think I will go with the saddle stand based on your testimony, very thankful because I was planning to get the waist grip before! If anything, perhaps I will get both and try them out before committing lol

Mai's pram arrived this afternoon! It's from American Girl Samantha's collection. There are a couple other things of hers that I want, but this was my most wanted. So glad the proportions match Dear SD as perfectly as they do. The little doll is a handmade bisque doll I bought a few years ago, and she luckily also fits in the pram perfectly ❤️

    52. @JaxxCapta, Violet is lovely! Her lips are very cute.
@lunar-dream304, your girls look so cute and classically doll-like!

RE: hand order forms: I haven't welcomed a DearSD from the anniversary release, but afaik, the only releases of the extra DearSD hands were announced by Volks and could be ordered by anyone online. They aren't always available.

    53. @lunar-dream304 stunning girls! Bonnet never looked better to me than on this girl!

    54. It's so cute how the bonnet matches the fabric and ribbon on her dress, and her wig's styled beautifully! :3nodding:

    55. New New addition to my little DSD Family, Hana ❤️ I actually bought her for christmas but she's been sitting at the Buyee warehouse since late December, until I could stomach the tariffs and shipping lol. So happy she is finally home and that her new outfit looks good on her! This bonnet was such a lucky find, it felt like destiny with how closely it matches the bodice detail on her dress (I have no idea who made either the dress or bonnet, sadly)
