Today I'm sharing photos of a very special new acquisition. When I saw this head pop up on Mercari Japan, I was... extremely confused. The listing said it was "Mirai," as in the Dollfie Dream sculpt, but the head was very clearly cast in resin. When I saw the plate, my interest was even more piqued. An auction model? Just what was this thing?! I bought it on impulse, trusting my gut and curiousity. Upon further research, it turns out at Dolpa 11 and then Dolpa 13 there were 2 auction models called a "Super Dollfie Dream". Both were resin casts of Mirai, one in Sunlight (Dolpa 11 in 2004), and one in Pureskin Normal (Dolpa 13 in 2005). These are the only two casts ever made. They are exactly what they say on the tin; resin Super Dollfie versions of the Dollfie Dream sculpt. They even originally had resin Dollfie Dream bodies! Some photos of the head: Mikey-sama's signature. Mikey is a daughter of the Shigetas (Volks founders) and one of the earliest premier artists. Auction Model plate: The back of the head really shows the combo, plate for resin dolls + dollfie dream inscription: Her original promo photos: I never thought I would own an auction model, and she certainly is unique among them. She has had a rough life and isn't in great condition, but I love that she still has her original faceup and eyes in place. I am extremely torn on removing the eyes. I want to see what she would look like with glass eyes so badly, but I also want to preserve what's left of her original state. She is such an interesting part of Volks history! I had never heard of her in all of my collecting years, so I absolutely had to share her here. Here is is, dressed up! I hope you enjoyed seeing her as much as I have!
Wow, pretty neat! I like keeping the original look as much as possible, but that's just me. I think her eyes look very unusual, and I would keep them as they are!
Woah what great find - Dollfie Dream headmolds look so good in resin, I wish Volks leaned into it more. (And you should totally try those glass eyes out!!! I'm sure she'll look great in those!)
This is so cool. Thanks for sharing her here. I had never heard of the resin casts either. She is one of my favorite DD head molds. What a wonderful find you've got!
Incredible! I always wondered what happened to those dolls… and Mirai/candy is one of my favorite DD head sculpts too, she’s very sweet and “early 2000s anime”. Congrats on getting her
Oh! I very vaguely remember the resin DD auction models from the time!! I think because it was so unusual, and she had such a cute outfit. What a find! And it's so nice she's found her way to you, she's very special and adorable. I personally don't think removing the eyes is a bad thing; you'd still have them, and could put them back in. But I also totally get that feeling! I was even thinking oh, it would be fun to have a copy of her original outfit, though that may not be your style for her at all, hahah.
One of two? That’s an awesome find! I wonder where the other one ended up… Her eyes are so vibrant too! What a cool head!
Wow, what a fascinating find on Mercari! This feels especially timely as the Standard Dollfie Dream Mirai is going to be discontinued after ~20 years of faithful service. I love her old school look - in resin she reminds me of the very anime SDs like Mimi or Nono. The early DDs are more related to SD than you would think. DDH-01 is actually a cast of SD Chii, for example, and the first DD body was partially strung. It's interesting to think about.
What a fascinating find! She's a very interesting piece of BJD history – I knew Chii was the base for DDH-01 but I had no idea Volks had made resin DD heads!
Wow, what a find. I remember seeing one of them on Dollyteria (i think?) many years ago. Only that one had the body, but it was in pretty bad shape. Seems like the poor girl got passed around for years. It's very probable that the head you have now belongs to the same one I saw all that time ago.
Wow!! I didn't even know that Mirai had been casted in resin! You're so lucky! I can understand how you feel about owning an auction model and I would keep her as much as I could in her original state too
