Volks AllTenshis discussion (Yo-Tenshi, Sei-Tenshi,Rei-Tenshi)

Mar 18, 2012

    1. Let's discuss the vagaries of dressing dollies with wings. How do you deal with wings and odd sized dolls.

      Volks pages on Tenshis
      http://site.volksusa.com/html/hello_sd/rei_sei.html
      http://site.volksusa.com/html/hello_sd/yo_sd.html

I know sometimes they also just like going au natural.

Ok one of my big problems right now are finding shoes for sei-tenshis. Their feet are bigger than pukifee/lati yellow and smaller than yo. Anyone find boy shoes that work for their feet?

I found outfits that tie at the neck work well with sei wings.

With yotenshis do you like outfits that have naatural wing look or do you attach the wings over the clothes?

    2. When I use the wings (which is seldom), I attach them over clothing. I haven't had a problem with slippage, but I try to make sure there aren't to many layers of clothing between the magnets.

    3. clochette: I love wings but like you I keep them on the doll seldomly. I usually put them on for photos. I noticed some of the brader wingspans have less grip than the smaller ones.

    4. Reitenshi's wings are strung on, attached with eyelet-hooks to a string inside the body. I once had one of Jimmy's wings come unscrewed & pop off.... got a friend to help fix (a second pair of steady hands is essential for navigating something so small!), and managed it with a little nervewracking fishing-around with a crochet hook & offset needlenose tweezers.

Aside from that, I never have to worry much about the wings. They don't get in the way of clothing, because clothing is out of the question. Shoes are out of the question because his feet are fused together. And his hair is strips of fun-fur donated by the Hair Club for Fetuses. I am actually saving a fortune not-shopping for this guy. ^^

    5. JennyNemesis:Wow that was really informative I had no idea the wings were strung on with rei-tenshi.
SeiTenshis have their wings stuck on with wires that go through a hole in the back. Mine are fused on though I've seen pictures on the internet where the had come off.

Jimmy is adorable. He's such a character for an embryo.

aishiteruI know how you feel. I stalk Y!J alot. Once someone outbid me on the last 5 minutes on a reitenshi, it was so frustrating and sad. I think the second hand prices are higher in Japan than in DoA marketplace. The last Dolpa I went to the two persons sitting either side of me won a SeiTenshi.

    6. Yeah, it's tricky for such a tiny little body! The holes in the eyelet-screws are threaded onto the elastic that runs through his chest, from arm to arm... then the screw-ends screw into the wings. Jimmy's wing must've unscrewed itself from having me rotate it back into position one too many times (they do tend to get rotated during transit & handling). I dread the day I have to restring him completely. ;;

Wires, eh? I had assumed that Seitenshi used magnets! But I guess they hadn't gotten to that point in engineering yet. I'm very glad Reitenshi doesn't use magnets-- these wings are so teensy, like the size of confetti, I could totally see them getting knocked off every time the doll rubs against something. What a nightmare that'd be.

I don't know how Volks packed so much attitude & personality into a fetus... but they say these Tenshi choose their owners, and I had never even wanted one, so they knew what they were doing when they sent ol' Diamond Jim over here to me. :aangel: I guess every house gets the angel it deserves.

    7. JennyNemesis: Sounds like ReiTenshis have slightly more poseable wings than a SeiTenshi from how you describe. So there's a hole slot in the torso the eyelet goes through
then it hook on to the string?

SeiTenshis predate the YoTenshis, they have magnetic wings.

I found this photo via google of how SeiTenshis wings go on. I'm not sure what adhesive Volks uses to attach the wings to the bar but I think it has some as they really rigid and attached flush to the body. The wires in the wings go into the holes in that bar.

I know ReiTenshis are tiny and not as jointed as some similar sized dolls but each one I've seen has so much attitude in them.

      • x 1
    8. Yes, there's two holes in his back where the wings are strung on. As far as I can tell, there's no separate string between the wings-- the eyelets are just attached to the string that runs from arm-to-arm. Simple yet effective. It's kinda hard to pull the wings far enough out to see/show it, but that is what I discovered when 1 fell off. ;;

And yes, you can rotate the angle of the wings, so I guess that's "posing". But these wings are so short and stumpy, they don't seem to give a lot of expression no matter what angle they're at. ^^ As long as they're not upside-down, that is. And, as I discovered the hard way, I should keep track of how many times they've been twisted around (and in which direction), so as not to kink up the elastic inside the body, or to twist the wing off the screw.

Wow, those Seitenshi "bars" look pretty rigid all right. Now I see why no posing. Do the wings have any kind of a slot, that'd anchor them onto the bar there? Or, are they only held on with wires? And if so, doesn't that make em kinda hard to keep on?

I think it's the way they paint the Reitenshi eyebrows that knocks me out-- when Jimmy puts on his default-wig, a bowl-cut with heavy bangs that cover his eyebrows, he totally loses all his attitude & just looks like a sleeping baby. But when he shows off his eyebrows by changing into a mohawk, they give him that saucy "bitch, pleeze" expression. :XD:

    9. JennyNemesis: I know what you mean about ReiTenshi faceups. I've come across many in my research. Volks manges to give the same mold various personalities.

I just updated my blog. I got this photo submission that illustrates how Sei-Tenshi wings attach

    11. Hehe, OK, so I convinced Diamond Jim to make another appearance.

L.A. Dolpa in 2007 was where I won Jimmy. I am not into babies or angels, and I've never considered Los Angeles to be particularly lucky. So I was hoping to just win a pair of eyeballs in the raffle, or maybe a pack of postcards... I sat gape-mouthed for an embarrassingly long time after my number was called up attached to a Reitenshi. And I confess that my first reaction when I opened the box, and parted the pearly fluffy flowery pink clouds of packaging, was to recoil and say "Jesus marimba! It's a fetus!!"

Jimmy says that wig did nothing for his bone-structure, so this is the only surviving photo of him in it. He will probably be destroying it soon, to thwart any possibility of future blackmail.

Now, does that look like the same man at all? XD When I got into the elevator to take him back to my hotel room, I was still stunned, and already beginning to worry "How the heck am I gonna sell this creepy thing without being totally crucified for selling it?" But his spell worked fast. By the time that elevator reached my room on the 4th floor, my tune had changed to "I think I'll call him Jimmy."

topazrain: What a lovely custom faceup your Mochi has.

Originally ordered the Imda 2.2 thinking they were similar in size and possibly could share clothes. They are similar height but the Imda fairy is too thin and has tiny feet

    16. I got Blythe Converse style sneakers for Gallifrey. I just need to get some new scaled laces.

    17. Hi~ I have a question for Sei-Tenshi owners. I recently brought one home from DoA and she is in desperate need of SHOES. I've tried on a pair of Blythe sneakers on her at a local meet and the fit was really cute. Can anybody confirm if other Blythe shoes will fit?

Also, I was wondering if your little Sei-Tenshi's wings were coloured resin or blushed to be a certain colour, because I notice my angel's wings seem to be white, but blushed to appear pink. Not sure if this was a custom job or if all Sei-Tenshi are like that? :D

      Thanks!

    18. Most sei-tenshi wings are translucent colored resin, white, or opaque pastel colored ones. I'm not sure if the blushed winged ones were done after. Most people who resell the blushed wings say they did it after, but there may have been some sei-tenshi with blushed wings.

Older sei-Tenshis had deeper colored translucent wings. Some of those have changed colored over time. I've seen some with uneven fading. The more recent ones have white or slightly pastel tinted wings.

In addition to sneakers I have a pair of Blythe boots and maryjanes. The mj style were slightly on the oversize so they fit but the boots tend to be tight and it's hard to take off once they are on. So Blythe shoes can be hit or miss dependent on their style.

    19. I didn't realize how small Sei are to regular yo tenshi and yosd until I got to hold one at a meetup a few years back. I hope to one day bring one home from a Dolpa :) I personally think they are a bit more special since it seems like if you are lucky to have one given to you it means it was meant to be lol and the secondary market is kinda scary to browse >_<

    20. Manda_Chan: I love their slightly smaller build they don't pose as well as yos, but they have other added cute aspects that make up for it. They look like little toddlers and have such cute small hands

I think it is truly lucky if one wins one at an event, they have added sentimental value.

    21. Thank you, Aree! I'm honestly not sure when my little one was made, but I won't feel so bad about removing the blushing then. Her little head is with Rabiruna at the moment anyway.

      I suppose I should get her some shoes as well... ^^;

Aishiteru, I hope you get a Sei-Tenshi! They are so precious. I wish I could attend Dolpa and win one. I feel like it would be more special that way. But I still love my little one nonetheless!

    22. bunnywink: I know what you mean about winning one being more special. From the certs on mine I know they were 2010 NY Dolpa, which really added to them being twins. I can't wait to see yours with the updated faceup.

    23. The twins wanted to ask the age old question his or her blue box?

    24. Is Gallifrey wearing a Tardis shirt? How suiting...did he steal that shirt or did the shirt steal him?! Lol

    25. Here is a shot of my Sei-Tenshis. I find it is easiest to use outfits that tie at the neck. These are all jumpers made by Spampy. They fit wonderful. I also found these little cell phone chairs from Claire's stores work really well to sit them in since they can't really sit well in a regular chair.
I have not won any of these at dolpas. Most are bought or traded or lent or presents from very good friends.

    26. purplekaren: what cute crew of sei-tenshis you have. What mold letter is the first one? I love the chairs. I love the Spampy rompers.

NabeeRain: Gally does love his dr who stuff. His sister Brooklyn loves Tiffany boxes more.

    27. AreeElf: thanks. The first one on the left does not have any markings inside his head at all. He was a very early one. Maybe they didn't use letters in the beginning? He is from the first NYC dolpa. I don't know why, but my monitor is only showing 3 dolls. the whole right side of the photo is cut off. I think a lot of my photos have been getting cut off the right side lately. Is there new guidelines now for posting photos?

    28. purplekaren: It might be a resolution issue. On my ipad the photo is cutoff and on my pc I see the whole photo

This little one just arrived yesterday she has a really long name but she's called Huinn for short.

I love playing with her wings. I really like that they are strung not fused to the back. if I can't pose her legs at least i can play with her wings :)

      • x 2
    29. Congratulations, you have a fetus! Or as my friends call it, a lima bean. :D She looks so totally different from Jimmy, it knocks me out.

The strung wings are weird - but it is cool that at least you can change the angles. (But be careful not to spin 'em around too much, though - I had one of Jimmy's wings come off in my hand once! Dunno how it had unscrewed from its eye-hook, but that's what'd happened.)

    30. JennyNemesis: Thanks for the tip on being careful of the wings. It looks like it would be difficult to restring if it came out. I wasn't sure what she would be like, until she arrived. She definitely looks different from Jimmy, but I have a feeling she has a deceptively innocent look at the moment. (Something tells me I'll be in trouble regarding hats with this one. I'm really glad I don't have to worry about shoes)

      Lima bean!! :fangirl:

    31. Is her faceup default? It looks different from Volks, but maybe I'm just not seeing all of it. She's clearly a hat person. ^^ Yeah, these fetuses definitely save you mucho $$ on clothes & shoes!

If the wing does come off the eye-hook, it's just a matter of fishing that eye-hook back out of the hole, so you can screw/glue the wing back on. The eye-hook is threaded onto the arm strings, so it won't actually get lost. But at that tiny size, it's tricky to handle! For me, it took the combination of some good offset needlenose tweezers + a friend to help steady things. (Big dolls are so much easier to wrangle. ;;^^)

    32. JennyNemesis: Thanks for the tips on the wings. Yes her faceup is default. This is a photo of her from the Y!J auction still with her facecover. She was from 2009.
[IMG] I was wondering how is Jimmy's seam lines. I decided to sand Samhuinn as she had very noticeable lines on her bottom and legs.

Speaking of faceups did you spy the rei-tenshi from Sendai he looked like a standing bontenmaru embryo

      • x 2
    33. Oh my goodness, she is quite different! Different sculpt altogether. With her big cheeks, narrow eyes and curly smile, oddly enough the first thing her features reminded me of was SD17 Reisner. :D

Jimmy doesn't have a single seam line! He is truly as smooth as a shelled lima bean. Which can make him hard to hang onto sometimes. He's practically frictionless. ;; He was a 2007 model, maybe they did em differently back then.

No, I haven't seen the new Sendai Reitenshi-- do you have a link? Little Yo-Bontenmaru nearly did me in, being so much like the big Masamune Date... seeing that haughty face in embryonic form must be hilarious. XD Seeing the 3 of them together would be a huge ZOMG.

      • x 1
    34. Her really rosy cheeks is what gave off that she was a girl. Wasn't sure until I had her in person.

I saved the Y!J photos for reference. I had major covet issues for the Sendai rei, he even had that one piece thing, it must be a funny back view. Sadly he was a bit too steep for me. :(
      [IMG]

The embryo looks a bit more squishy mouth for thumb sucking and the coloring is a bit less dramatic but I see some resemblance.

      • x 2
    35. Heheheee, oh squee! What a funny little dude. :whee: That face looks a bit like Jimmy-- the squishy mouth, the half-open eyes, the same thumb-hand. But the eyebrows are less saucy, and he's got straight legs. And the Bontenmaru onesie is an absolute scream.

I don't think I've ever met a straight-legged Reitenshi... they seem so TALL. ^^ How tall are they standing, compared to the fetal ones? The fetuses are about 10cm.

    36. Volks lists Rei-tenshi as 5 inches I saw a standing one next to a pocket fairy so it's between 12-14cm for the standing one. He does look to have same face mold as Jimmy but the faceup gives him a different look.

I have to find where I put the snap closures my kids were teasing me about naked Lima bean so I cobbled up a halter dress for Samhuinn in gold lace I had laying around. The demanding one also asked for a matching cape. :XD: I hear you on them being super slippery with no seam lines. She was easier to hold with the seam lines than without.

    37. Hey, guys:D I have a question. Is there any kind of gallery or catalog of molds for the Sei Tenshis? I know there are lots of different ones and I was hoping someone had compiled a few photos. Any advice is much appreciated:D

Oh my gosh:D So I just won my very first Sei Tenshi! Admittedly not by lottery or raffle at a Dolpa but from ebay. He is precious and adorable with a more than like non-default faceup and a detached wing. The seller says she reglued it with hot glue and the damage is not clear yet. Once he gets here I will be sure and post pics of the wing area to ask for advice as to the best way to repair it if it isn't a clearly easy fix already. Oh man! So excite:XD: Can't wait to meet my new baby boy:aheartbea

    38. Sorry for the belated reply Mitya. I was compiling lists of tenshi molds I'm a bit behind
      http://tennyoacademy.chobyte.com/alldolls/seitenshis

I was hoping to share an in coming sei-tenshi last month but things went badly with it. It was my grail one too. I'm hoping that the incoming Rei-tenshi works better. I finally am getting a standing Rei-tenshi and it has an interesting tattoo to boot.

In the meantime Hobbywhelmed took this photo of Gallifrey at the last NYC meetup

    39. @Aree, Oh my-- you were getting one of the fumi-tenshi? With the big toothy grins? I'm sorry to hear that the deal fell through, but can I tell you, those things scare the full-blown gonzo bejesus out of me. ;;^^

Also, I have never seen a tattooed Reitenshi before, so I'm eager to see the pics.

Also-also, I totally flaked for the past 3 months, on asking you where on earth did you get such a tiny fez?? :fangirl: Zee-oh-em-double-gee! There is something ineffably marvelous about the is-ness of an angel in a fez. Sort of like a vicar in a tutu. Anyway, aww, if only those came in Reitenshi/Pocketfairy sizes. The Jimster would absolutely knock 'em DEAD in a fez.

But for right now, Jimmy is busy grooving on his new pheasant-feather mohawk. Courtesy of the Winnipeg Hair Club for Fetuses.

    40. ZOMG I love that grinning dreadlocked tenshi with the closed eyes! S/he couldn't look happier!
And Currant's funny little belly-tattoo is so cute - it reminds me of one of the Sneetches or something. ^^

Thanks for the hat info! I will have to inquire about micro-fezzes. I don't just think Jimmy would look good in a fez, I think he'd look RIGHT. So so right. <3

Anyway-- silly me, this morning I posted Jimmy's picture without posting his Gallery thread! There are more of the wacky animal-stripe gremlin mohawk here:

    41. I didn't know that we had such a thread about Tenshis on DoA. :ablink:

AreeElf, looks like you got one with Volks anniversary tattoo, congrats! ^^ Your little berry looks so important sitting on the ''cake" ;)
      Lol, Sammy good job! ^^b

Jenny, your Jimmy is very cool tiny guy ;)

It's an old picture, but I'm putting it here for the record :)

    42. Kshusha: I love that photo of Izumi. Glad you found this little spot on DoA. I wasn't as lucky as you and Jenny I find it hard to resist angels looking for rehoming.

Jenny: Samhuinn is quite the prankster she likes borrowing items around the place. Love how Jimmy is sitting In the hat next to a guitar. I agree he would look right in a fez.

I'll have to take some proper photos in good lighting of the little imps. Work is finally letting up a bit, they kept me crazy hostage for a few months so haven't had much dolly play time.

Currant found some unused puki shoes. The carriage was originally supposed to be Sammy's but it was too small. Luckily it makes the perfect toy carriage for Curry. Curry wants to take up dance so she's fond of balancing on one foot. And propping herself on what's handy. ;)

It still never ceases to amaze me how the same mold can give a variety of personalities.

    43. Jimmy's red velvet fez is here!! :D

      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?598138-Fez-man-(Jimmy-Volks-Rei-Tenshi)

Julienne & her micro-millinery were up to the challenge, all right! She picked the perfect superfine velvet & made it just according to Jimmy's size & specifications. Tassel and all. She even helped me brainstorm ways to make it stay on his head (he's frictionless, bulbous, and hairless xD) with a ring of eyeputty. Thanks so much Aree for the reference! :thumbup

I'm in love with this guy in a hat, now... I suspect this won't be the last Julienne hears from us.... what say, a little satin topper, maybe a pirate hat, perhaps a furry Siberian dealie....

    44. Love the Jimmy Martini with red fez on top. Glad to Julienne was up to the task Jimmy is awesome! He really is styling. :fangirl:

I vote for Furry Siberian deal. Though Pirate and eyepatch sounds fun

    46. Pleiades: congratulations on your sei-tenshi, Kiki. How great you were able to go to the tea and meet the Hideyoehi and the rest of the staff.

    47. Here’s the new Sei-Tenshi in the house, won by my BF at the March 2014 Volks USA Tea Party. His name is Haru, and he’s been sent to keep an eye on the wayward Washi (standing behind him), who was won by the BF at the face-up class that Volks USA put on in Nov. 2009. (The BF has become a Sei-Tenshi magnet, it would seem…:sweat)

Haru: *sigh* Now where has that darn Washi gotten to?
Washi: *to self* On the count of three… one… two…

    48. Much to my enormous surprise, I was gifted a Sei-Tenshi and I have nothing for dolls in that size. Has anyone tried funnylori's wigs on them? I'm assuming that they wear a 6-7 wig? *utterly lost but entirely delighted*

      • x 1
    49. Congrats on your little Tenshi of joy, St. James! I just measured my Washi's head, and size 6-7 is what they wear. :)

    50. Wheeheehee, congratulations to St. James & Beamlette and everyone else who won! Sounds like a lot of tenshis came home to DOA this time around. :D

@beamlette, Washi slays me (those overalls xD) (and that paper bag trick XXD). He is lucky to have a new victim at home. New guy definitely looks a lot more credulous.

@St. James, I was recently gifted an itsy-bitsy wig that I don't have any dolls to fit, so bring Tenshi over and we'll see if it fits (& suits).

    51. Thank you, Beamlette! I'm think that this is the perfect opportunity to get a really fluffy mohair wig. I've always liked how wild they look on tiny dolls, but this is the first doll this size I've ever owned. Mohair just doesn't have the same effect on SDs. Still no idea about a name or what type of clothes to get. There aren't a lot of examples around.
I've only seen one repaint. Is it sentiment that keeps people from customizing them? I might not be able to resist. I think the head B sculpt ( I think that's what I have?) would look really cute with more blushing emphasis on the big round eyes.

    52. pleiades, your sweet Kiki is cutie! Congratulations!

beamlette, oh my, look at them, they are soooo cute together :XD:

      St.James, congratulation with your first Sei-Tenshi! ^^

Ok, I know I promised some of you a picture of my triple Rei-Tenshi. I did manage to put wigs on them without anything, after ten minutes of stretching :sweat
But I'm stuck with Spring windows cleaning and weeds in the garden, so I made just a quick pic for now of how they are living in display cabinet ;) The last two look so similar that I want to change their eyes at least.

    53. Ksusha, your little Rei-Tenshi trio is darling -- I love the sleepy one resting in her "bed", watched over by the other two. :love

JennyNemesis, those overalls were a lucky happenstance; they came in a Rement I bought the day after the BF won him. Turns out they're the choice of well-dressed Sei-Tenshis; AreeElf's Gallifrey has them, too

Pleiades, congrats on your Sei-Tenshi win; Kiki has an adorably intense expression. And are his wings green? My favorite color! :)

    54. Wow congrats to all the new tenshi arrivals.

St. James: They do wear the same wig size as YoSD, go with the smaller sized Yo Sd wig. Fur or fiber wigs seem to suit them best. I've seen a few repainted B and they do look best with a bit more smoky eye. I think besides sentiment most people get scared sending them off .

Ksusha: Love your reitenshi trio. Glad to see a pic of them

Pleides: I love the pistaschio green wings and white skin on Kiki.

Beamlette: Which mold is Haru? The overalls must be a favored Tenshi outfit. Washi is so naughty.

Sometimes hats help to keep wigs on and stretch the elastic to shape. Samhuinn shops for hats a lot. See how she's guarding the extra hat behind her. ( I use a miniature Cello case to carry the fetus around.)

    55. I've got to get Jimmy a cello case for travelling! :D Right now, I just find it easiest to tuck him into his pearly-white Tenshi box where I know he's safe in my bag. But since these fetuses can't sit or stand, I also have to carry a throne with him too... at meetups, he's never without his cell-phone sling-chair. Jimmy needs a private roadie. ^^ But at home he prefers to nest in a martini glass.

Samhuinn has quite the hat collection. She always looks to me like she's filled with devilish glee. Jimmy's kind of girl-- fused legs, likes hats and trouble! :whee: Jimmy has only the one hat so far, but he does nest in other people's hats. He doesn't have to worry about holding his hair on, when he wears hair, because it's just stuck on with doublestick tape. (So is the fez. His skull is SO slippery. xD)

I guess overalls are the Tenshi uniform of choice, because they've got straps & therefore don't get in the way of wings. Now a cowboy hat is all Washi & Gallifrey need! - After all, it does seem that Tenshis are mad for hats. :3

Is Kiki white-skinned? I didn't even know they made white Tenshis! There are a lot more variety of Tenshi than I've ever laid eyes on. @Aree, do you have a compiled list of the face sculpt types, anywhere? I looked on your Tenshiologist site for reference, but couldn't find what face Jimmy has (if it even has a style/number).

    56. My sei-tenshi list is a bit better with head molds. I need to start categorizing reitenshi head molds now that I've had more sightings. It's been on my todo list to redo the site. I somewhat exploded it on information overload.

At the last Dolpa NY Mr. Shigeta had said white skin and sleeping tenshis were rare. I've seen white skin seitenshi before someone I knew won one. Though I don't think the sleeping seitenshi G mold is as rare in the US as Japan. Maybe the trip gives them jet lag.

    57. Finally found time to come back to this thread! :) It looks like beamlette and I have identical Sei; blonde wig, blue eyes, pink wings, head mold C in NS.

I've concluded that mine is a girl named Potnia. Haven't even had time to look for a wig, so I just hemmed this MSD one to fit.

I think I need to find or make a little stand for her, so she's not always flopped over like an overturned turtle in some larger doll's lap!

    58. The pink wig suits her skeptical face. ^^

I have found that a Pullip stand is pretty good for Yo-size dolls (that's what Nava and the imps use)... and Yo is a little chubby for it, so if Sei is smaller and thinner than Yo, it'd be perfect. If you can find one sold separate from a Pullip, that is. I had to scrounge on eBay.

    59. They are smaller and thinner than a Yo, so I'll keep that in mind. Might just order one of these from one of our wholesalers though. The metal arms can be reshaped for thicker waists.
