I finally got some pictures of my updated sculpt of my senior thesis doll! Well, technically sculpts, because there are two heads! I have some pretty horrible in progress pictures on my old computer, so maybe I'll upload those bad babies later. I've been working on her for way too long, and getting ready to give her a grand unveiling at Otakon at the end of the month! Hopefully, I'll have the molds and casts done by then. Head A- Head B - Body Preview- Hands - Feet- Leg Preview - Sorry about the crappy photos... I didn't want to mess with the pieces too much in case I chipped the primer, and my kitchen has bad lighting. :p Oh, and for the curious, my original version, looked like this... The body has been completely sculpted over/mutilated, she was a unrealistically skinny girl before. The heads are new, though I used an old cast as a base so they could share headcaps.
Wow! how did you get her so smooth! I'm impressed. I wish my boy was coming along that well, even though he's still only a head haha
I love the face, its a beaut!! Cant wait to see it all finished and put together, i really really like it so far!!
She's made of a little of almost everything... Resin base, super sculpey, and apoxie sculpt, and lots of Rustoleum primer! For some reason when I started out I thought it'd be a good idea to boil the sculpey over the resin bits... that only ended with a lot of cracking a repair work. This is the one full body progess photo on this computer, and it kinda looks like a hybrid between the old version and the new one. It was taken before I widened her hips and shoulder's, fixed her arm joints and sawed her legs into more pieces. Oh, and here's what Head A looked like for a reallly long time before I figured out what I didn't like about it. That revelation came after a month long break where I had to stay with my mom because she had brain surgery! It was the most satisfying thing to come home to, all those things that annoyed me looked almost highlighted. At this point, I had thought the head was finished, and was going force myself to leave it alone. Good thing I broke my own rule! I will have to go hook up my external drive later, her evolution pics are so different that it's kind of hilarious.
It took so much sanding! Especially with a really gritty sandpaper for the major parts. I actually use a palm sander for the bigger parts, like the lower torso, legs, and even the arms, It worked great for the peanut joints too, just kinda turned it on and rolled the joint on it until it was nice and round. Easiest way to smooth apoxy that I've found! Though, it wouldn't work on parts like the head. I honestly also used a least 5 cans of primer, well, that's how many empty cans I haven't thrown out yet, I have no clue how many I've used over the past few months!
5 cans of primer and sanding, the formula of making a smooth body ).I bought some krylon primer but i got ripped off with it. it sprayed a tiny bit but then it stopped spraying, i guess I'll use gesso then.
Krylon has only ever given me problems! Like clogging, or taking hours to dry. I tried gesso on my first doll, Purple, but I didn't like that it doesn't go on nearly as smooth. Rustoleam all the way!
I sure hope so, fairysquisher! I have so much invested in her, I hope someone will want one. :< Anyways, I started molds today! Stirring experiment...
Woah, keep updating the mould pictures! This is the most important bit! Youve done such a neat and beautiful job /drool
This is the part where I feel like I'm watching a magician give away their tricks. Not that it would help me LOL Your set up looks amazing and well thought out. Much better than the jumbled mess I did the one time I tried!
wow. I am impressed... She looks so sweet, so gentle, so innocent I admire your work!! I want one like her ><
Well, they are sort of done.... but I'm going to redo her lower arm's peanut joint. Very frustrating, but it'll be worth it! They are actually "completed", with face-up, eyes, wigs and clothes, but I want to still fix the stupid joint before I take their final photos for the "Completed" section. AndI need to fix the elastic! I had the body strung and it stood like a rock.... but the elastic was too thin and snapped. Parts everywhere! :dead So now both girls are strung super loose, because I haven't ordered better elastic. :arrr
Wow! I saw your dolls at Otakon and was completely floored. I love their face structures and their posability.
Armeleia - Thank you! As much as I love Purple as a first doll, these girls totally outshine her. StarryDream- Yay! Did I get to talk to you, or were the boys/my mom at the table? Hopefully their arms will pose even better with the newest modification... I really should post pictures of that, maybe later.
@Renzi - Unfortunately I was not able to speak with you directly, but your mom was at the table and she was very friendly. I look forward to seeing more pictures of your dolls and their posing!
Great and wonderful just don't quite do them justice. I can't wait to see the rest of the photos. Thanks for sharing.
