Aesthetics Very first Faceup~

Dec 14, 2015

    1. Hello~
So,I decided to so some research, get some art supplies in and give a faceup a go.
I'd just ordered my first SD sized doll, and wanted to update his faceup to one a little more like my own character he's going to be, so before I even thought about touching his little resin face, I thought I'd try a faceup on Dottie, my Hujoo Berry~
I'm not sure how I feel about the outcome, I know there is other steps I could have taken now to protect her face. At first my Liquitex/water (I have lots of animals that like to hide in parts of my rooms, so non-Toxic is the only option for me)combo was too weak, so it was just like airbrushing water onto her and since it didn't really build up much of a layer, the layers of colour after that did stain (around her nose mainly, you can see where I tried to scrub it off and damaged her nose)
      So, here she is~
Please be honest in your feedback, and be as brutal as you need to be, I won't improve as much if its sugarcoated.

I'm sorry for the pictures, the lighting in my room is hideous, I had to use my laptop screen as a light source, also I had to use my phone to take the pictures, which is why they're not the best, sorry!

    2. Hiya ~ I honestly think this is really good! I love the eyeliner and the sparkly eyeshadow. What sticks out to me as something to work on is eye creases and lower lashes. I think darkening the lower lashes would look good especially alongside the black liner. And putting a little shading or a line where the eyelid crease is gives some realism & depth. I hope this helps x)

    3. Oh, that's a really good idea, her eyes do look a little flat so I think that would really help! With the eyelashes, I think I was a little scared to use anything too dark, because you could see it more and if I messed up it would be super noticeable >o< eyelashes are hard XD
I think darker eyelashes would look good too, I'll try it!
Thank you so much for your feedback, It means a lot to me~!

    4. Hey there! I really love the look that you were going for in her, that sort of innocent sugary-pink theme goes really well with the faceup. What I'd suggest is, to use light layers of different shades of color rather than just one or two. I find it's generally best for the basic faceup (ie not vibrantly multicolored) to have a color palate of two light main overshadowing colors (the color you want the overall tone to be, in your case, pinks), one neutral, and two contrasting shadow colors
I've listed a couple tutorials by RawResin I think might help illustrate what I'm talking about a little better, though your contrasting colors of course needn't be so brash unless you like them that way! :)

By the way, I adore the way you've done the eyeliner, it's tough to get symmetrical! If you lined the outside of it with a lighter skin tone from the corner of the eye where it starts to the outermost corner of the eyebrow and blend away from it, I think you'll find it draws more attention to the eye and makes the overall faceup look a bit crisper. This technique can also be used around the lips!
I think a good piece of advise is, there aren't very many faceup tutorials, but there are a TON of makeup tutorials for humans that not only give you a comprehensive knowledge of the contours of the face but are completely applicable to dolls as well
Good luck with your faceup ventures! ^v^

    5. @SubstituteApple

Thank you so much, all your pointers and tips are super valuable! I just wish I'd have read that before I just finished my second face up XD
Though, I was thinking of removing it and starting again (Since I messed up the eyebrows) I'll totally take everything you say into account!
For some reason I didn't even think of it like doing makeup, so its really cool that you pointed that out~
Like TheBodyVolcanic said, I think more shades around the eyes would be a good place to start too, I'm really glad that the things I'm lacking in are starting to show a little more to me~!

Thanks so much for your feedback, It was super helpful and has given me a lot to think about, I'll post the faceup I recently finished, and the redo of it on here if you'd like, so you can see if I've properly taken on board everyone's great suggestions! :cheer

    6. No problem, I'm glad you could get some use of my ramblings! I can't wait to see the pictures that you post! :D I'm sure they'll be fab

    7. So, heres the first attempt:

Its very grainy and not very polished, the colours are a bit flat and the yellow undertone is too yellow I think.

The face up I decided to keep for a while:

So, there he is! I hope you like him, I think the blue does bring him out a little more. I tried darker eyelashes too~!
