Aesthetics Very first faceup (and handmade mink eyelashes)

May 6, 2015

    1. Welp, finally posting this now that I am finally moved into my new house and I am reaalllly bored and reeeaaaally sick lol. I impulse bought a doll zone clare as my first bjd, and I really did not like her factory faceup at all. So I thought what the heck, it seems like it'd be fun to try and do a faceup. I ordered her some eyelashes from leekeworld through Denver doll, and I was so disappointed with them. I disliked the cut-off end look and the uniformity of the lashes, so I cut them all off and glued leftover trimmed mink eyelash extensions to the sticky base. It was quite a painstaking process, but the result is more natural so it was worth the hassle. Her sculpt is so feminine, I wanted to give her very thick eyebrows and a bit of a sun-kissed look to give her more of an androgynous feel. I wish I would have blushed around her ears a little more, and around her temples to match the sun kissed look of her cheeks and nose. A lot of shoulda-woulda-coulda with this faceup, but I have many more ahead of me. This was great practice and very fun! Critique is welcome, I want to improve!

Sorry this is formatting all weird, I'm on an iPad as my Internet doesn't get connected at the new house for a few more days. I will take pics with the good camera when I have Internet again! More imgur links below with different angles (sorry crappy iPad photos lol).

    2. wow this is your first? This is amazing !!!
I like Clare as well but not the company face up :) You've done really well with her :) congratulations <3
I can't wait to see what comes next !

    3. Thanks so so super much! You are too kind ;-; I just watched a lot of tutorials and did a million brush tests on a piece of plastic until I got the perfect strokes I wanted. The company clare faceups really do leave something to be desired... Hahah. But I guess to each their own. I had such great visions for how I was gonna paint her mouth, but I think her mold was slightly flawed (i got her right before she was discontinued, and she was heavily discounted) because the resin was so gnarly on her lips that I just gave up and painted it all a fairly uniform color I can't wait to do more faceups! Once my lungs are healed it's go-time!

    4. That eyebrow game! :D This is your first faceup?? (Compare that one to my first, which I very quickly wiped haha).

I am in no place to critique you, really, as my latest faceup isn't much better than my first (slowly getting better). However, I would like to compliment you on how nice the bottom lashes and eyebrows you did are! Also, the blushing is really smooth and not-splotchy at all, which is definitely an issue I have, especially with darker colors! I think a way to improve this particular faceup would be to add some definition to the lips, like lipliner, if that's your kind of aesthetic. The coloration is so strong that it appears she's wearing lipstick, but with the feathering of color of natural lips, if that makes sense (like the difference between the pen tool and binary tool in most digital art programs)? That aside, the faceup really is stunning, and looks quite professionally done. I would love to see more faceups from you in the future! :D

    5. Thanks for the comments and critique! I totally and completely agree with the lip thing, I had such a vision for what I wanted to do with her lips, but I ran into resin trouble and just about gave up on her mouth. The resin was super flawed in her mouth crease as well as her eye wells, I knew I couldn't start sanding mid way through a faceup so I just had to try to get an even coat of pastel and paint over the gnarly resin. I guess her mold was a little blown because her eye wells and her lips were totally uneven and jaggedy. Really, I probably should have sanded them before I started the faceup , but being a beginner I had no idea that would even end up being an issue. My new doll is totally smooooth though and has higher quality resin, so he will be my lip practice!

P.S. I love the natural look of your faceup, what a sweet looking girl! I can't wait until I am on my real laptop so I can take a closer look at it on a better screen! Also, is that an alpaca wig? Looks like one, those are awesome! I've always wanted to make one, or just feel one for that matter. :aheartbea

    6. Talent, talent, talent! You are definitely a natural. I love the thick eyebrows a lot!!! I'm not in any place to critique you either but I agree with PencilWolf that possibly the lips could have improvement. Even that is reaching though and it looks darn near perfect. Can't believe it is your first :O :D

    7. You can't be serious, this can't be your first face up!! It looks soo good, you are a true talent!! :)

    8. I have been practicing for a couple of years and I am still not that good o__o I only have one faceup that I am completely content with and even then I have some issues with it *_* Yours is amazing it looks almost professionally done

    9. Holy crap, thanks guys! I am feeling really flattered by your kindness *_*:love!!! I was thinking one day I might like to do faceup commissions once I get the hang of it a little bit more, I'm just such a disorganized person that it feels like a somewhat daunting task. Then again, when I'm dealing with someone else's property and money it puts a fire under my butt to get things finished to the satisfaction of the client. The rest of my life, however... utter shambles. Thanks so much for your kind words! It gives me hope that someday I can do this for others! I've bought more blank heads to practice on, gotta paint some dudes now, once I get more settled into this new house and I can handle MSC again (got some serious black mold poisoning from a leak in the wall of my old house and I've been sick for weeks :ablah:). I use a full respirator when I'm spraying MSC, but I don't think I should take any unnecessary risks with my health right now.

    10. oh my god! Are you really that is your first face up ? He looks so good to me. I love all the details you put on. Nice jobs

    11. Can't believe this is the first your face up :o She's so awesome. And you,too :love

    12. Amazing first! The eyebrows look so real! You really have something talented going on here :love

    13. Awesome faceup!! I love the eyebrows and dark eyes - the eyelashes especially! My only critique is maybe the lips? They seem a little on the red side and a bit fishy looking? (Maybe it's just me!) Maybe lightening them up a bit and adding more gradient and detail to them would be a bonus? Unless you were going for the darker lip look!

    14. wow, I think it0s very good job as first faceup ! I love the eyebrows ! :D

    15. She looks beautiful, I especially love the amount of detail you managed to get into her eyebrows/lashes, they're amazing!

    16. @inkumi I agree about the lips, I actually learned a valuable lesson about the gloss darkening them after the fact when I did it. I was very regretful after I glossed them and they got a lot darker than I intended. If I re-do this faceup, I'm gonna sand the lips a bit because the resin was very uneven and frustrating to paint. The fish-ness of the lips is a personal taste thing (awkward secret, I pretty much did her makeup just like I do mine on a night out  ) I definitely need to work on lip gradients! Thanks for the helpful critique!

Everyone else, thank you for your kind words! It means a lot to me, you're all too kind. Gonna be doing more faceups soon (I hope). Life has been hitting me left and right with crazy stuff (car troubles, getting booted from my house etc) but when I come on here and read all the comments, critiques, and kind words it makes me feel happy and motivated. Thank you all <3

    17. wow it looks great, love the brows!

    18. Stunning! You did an amazing job!!!! :love

    19. It looks great for a first. :)

    20. It looks great! Especially the eyebrows. One thing I would suggest would be to add some blushing under her lips, either a blue or a brown, to add depth. And maybe a little pink blush on her chin.

    21. those are some of the best eyelashes I've seen! I can't wait to see more from you, because that looks pretty professional. my only critique is blushing a little more around the ears, like you said.

    22. Those Satsuki Kiryuin eyebrows....they are amazing! I think that is an AMAZING faceup for a first try. :D

    23. For your first faceup this really good! You have a talent.

    24. Wow, she's gorgeous! You've done very well for your first face up. I do love her eyebrows. :D

    25. Is it just me, or does she look like Cara Delevingne? Those brows are fantastic! But I do agree with you that her ears need a bit more blushing to match her face. Perhaps a bit on the tops and bottom of her ear? I also agree with Unseenstars233, a bit of blush under the lip would definitely define her lips more. Otherwise, stunning job!
