Hello there! I figured I should start up a project journal for my very first BJD head I've decided to sculpt! I'm still in the very early phases right now, the base is sculpted and now I'm just working on tweaking the design and test prints. So far I've gone through four different edits on his design, each one looking better and better. His bone structure is based heavily on actor Ezra Miller (those cheekbones and that jaw SO LOVELY). I am sculpting him in Sculptris and then post production in Blender. Here are the first three versions. You can see how he's evolved as things have progressed. Making a doll head!! by Tatterpunk, on Flickr I did a test print of the first and second edits, and he looked a little wide in the face both times. Also the second test print did not print the eye holes correctly. . . hence the blindfold. It was really distracting. The first was printed small to save time, but the second I printed in SD size. He's shown on the Dollshe Mystic body. That's the general size he'll be in the end. I do need to get some gray resin for my printer so I can actually SEE things in photos though. First and Second Test Prints by Tatterpunk, on Flickr Since then I have done another edit, and there will certainly be more after this. Here is the current and fourth head with the hollowing done for the next test print. The Fourth Edits by Tatterpunk, on Flickr I will update again once I have more changes made! I hope you enjoy!
So it's been a bit, I know, and I've definitely come a LONG way since the last post. Currently I'm nearing the end of the month where I stare at the doll's painted head and decide what else I want to change. I figured in the meantime I would show some of the process of getting him to where he is now! First we have the process of sculpting. I think I took about a zillion screenshots, so here are a few lol. ValentineProcess01 by Tatterpunk, on Flickr You can see here how I got to the first version and then some of the subsequent edits from there. In this next photo I'll show several of my test prints. I finally got some gray resin which helps immensely in seeing what you need changed and any flaws. Valentine test prints by Tatterpunk, on Flickr That one that's not gray is the one I wound up painting. Whiiich you can see here: Valentine and Valor by Tatterpunk, on Flickr He is on a Dollshe Mystic body in this photo. The girl's head is another of mine - Valor. I'll be making a project journal for her process too. . once I stop being lazy. SO that brings us to today. I'm working on other heads while I occasionally gaze lovingly at the ones I've got painted. Once April comes around I will make a few more adjustments - mostly technical issues - and proceed to do the finishing work!
This is so darn cool! I love seeing unique heads made to represent the artist's own characters. And I think you captured Mr. Miller's facial structure very nicely (he does have beautiful cheekbones). Thank you for sharing!
