USPS - Slower than normal, Tracking glitch, Guaranteed by date?

Aug 21, 2008

1. Does anyone know what's up with USPS currently?

It used to take three days for a package to get from Japan to my house (one day for the shipping out from Japan and receiving in San Francisco, one day through customs, one day to my front door). When it took longer (never more than 5 business days) it was always held up in customs.

My current tracking looks as follows. The bottom bullet point is what happened first and the top is most recent. Has this happened to other people recently? It is impossible for an item to be shipped then to be prepared for shipment. Normally it has "Origin Post is preparing shipment" as the very first thing.

Begin Edit (8/21):
And now it says " Inbound Out of Customs, August 21, 2008, 4:04 pm" completely bypassing "Inbound into customs" @_@
:End edit

Also, for a different item, the korean tracking page says that the guaranteed delivery date is next monday. Is that ever correct?

2. Glad I'm not the only one with this problem. I'm getting a package from Canada which usually takes three days. My USPS tracking page says the exact same as yours except "Canada" instead of "Japan." I have no idea what is going on with them. *_*

I should add that my tracking hasn't been updated since the 19th on USPS, yet Canada Post has it updated to say that my package is in the States.

3. I'm having the same problems. I've sent packages off 5 days ago, and their website still hasn't updated. It's a right pain. I don't know where anything is. ;___;

4. ugh... I'm starting to lose faith in my beloved USPS. :( Maybe someone hacked into the system and messed things up (I have been reading too much weird Sci-Fi lately)

I am glad to know it's not just my package that is having issues... lets hope the resolve it all fairly quickly.

5. Seriously, they need to overhaul their system. I'd been having problem with our local post office where, if I had to sign for something, I had to confront them with the tracking number for them to realize that, oh yeah! It was in the safe!

And then tracking numbers stopped working. For about the last six months or so, the shipping hasn't updated much until after I've gotten my package. I'm talking only saying that it was accepted at the sender's post office while I was holding the package.

Something is bad-wrong with their shipping lately, and it just seems to be getting worse. I hope it doesn't take the system failing completely before they fix it.

6. You guys totally aren't the only ones. I may have completely lost a head due to the fact they forced it into the wrong address hands. I've even filled out a change of address. The website notified it as a wrong address, but for some reason they redelievered it to the wrong address where someone took it. I may never see it again. :(

7. gah, I figure, come Tuesday (over a week since the item shipped, it shipped on Sunday our time), if my items haven't arrived yet, I may have to take a trip to the post office and ask some questions.

8. Me and my trade partner sent our dolls the same day (priority), she got hers today while nothing for me, and no updates whatsoever. >< It does seem to be getting slower for me, it's frustrating. 0_o

9. Recently none of the tracking numbers on my incoming international registered airmails have worked. I flailed about it when it first happened but now it's just like...meh :/

10. ugh, this is making me sick- the doll was sent Tuesday priority, she got hers yesterday and it still says for mine accepted at the place she mailed it! >< While another member and me traded heads- and it's only been since yesterday and it already says processed out the facility, and it's farther away then the other was shipped! I'm praying she'll come today- if not i'm going to start to freak out.

11. I sent a package EMS (paid extra) to Australia. The package was given to USPS on Monday 8/18/08 physically. System was never updated to show that they got it. I tracked it everyday and finally on 8/21/08, it was shown that it left US. AFTER in their possession for 3 whole days.

This really sucks, I paid extra for nothing.

12. I'm having the same problem. I'm on my 5th working day of waiting and my tracking hasn't updated either. Its being sent by USPS international priority and the tracking still only states that the parcel has been accepted into the post office. There has been no movement on my tracking except to say that its been accepted into the post office.

Its really frustrating because I don't even know where my $510 doll is. For all I know, he could still be in the USA or he could be on a plane to England as I type. I just have no idea.

13. My package finally came today, within the normal "3-5 days". The box itself and the items inside are all as they should be ^_^ I just get so worried when tracking doesn't show exactly what it is supposed to.

Now to see if the korean package comes by the "Guaranteed Delivery Date"...

14. hmm, how strange. I'm going through the same problem as well with a package coming into england. what is going on?

15. My tracking hasn't updated yet, but I received a slip in my mailbox for a failed delivery. The one day the post lady comes late and I had to be somewhere. :...(

At least I know she's (my doll) here at the post office, though. The tracking still hasn't updated.

16. I've noticed longer-than-usual ship times too, and tracking hasn't been as smooth as it usually is. I really hope they get this resolved, it's such a pain!

17. The USPS and customs are two completely separate entities. USPS has no control over how long your package sits in customs. Also, international "guaranteed delivery" means delivered to the country's port of entry, not to the final destination.

18. Thank you. I was thinking that was probably true about the delivery date thing.

I understand USPS and customs are separate but what confuses me and worries me is the space between where the item is shipped to and inbound into customs and the unusual wonkiness of the USPS tracking site.

19. Its been a full week now and my tracking number hasn't updated at all. It still only says that it was accepted into the post office. I'm really worried since its a very expensive parcel and I don't even know whats going on Dx

20. Ive been waiting for 2-3 weeks now for some eyes from America via USPS, I'd be very surprised if they show up. Company said it was the last pair in stock too :(

First time ive ever had a problem with usps.

21. wow i was just gonna ask about usps problems. Yea my package has been stuck at customs for about 3 days now.
Also does anyone know about non-working tracking numbers? I sent a package out and received a tracking number, but everytime i try to type that into both usps' and singapore's postal service sites it keeps telling me that there was no such package!

Yes this has definitely never had been a problem for me before.

22. I got my doll yesterday, but I'm waiting for a head now. The guy at the po told me it depends on what hubs your package goes through, sometimes their bad at scanning them, and sometimes their bad at taking their sweet little time. (I dunno if this is true or not, it's what he told me) i did another trade for a head, again my partners will most likely get to her today while mine has no evidence of even arriving in my state at all. ><

23. Ditto bad at scanning. I sent out a trade item a short time ago. I printed the postage and label at home, and handed it in at the local office. Well, they never scanned it, so for days it said shipment info rec'd (or something like that, equating to a request), and there was no indication I'd actually mailed it until it was practically at it's destination.

For those of you mailing things internationally, be aware that they recycle some of the EMS numbers. Once I put in a number the day after mailing, and it said it had been delivered to an an address in Georgia, US. :aeyepop: Now, this was for something headed for Europe, so imagine my brain at that moment :horror: Luckily it corrected itself by the next day.

Another time I was cleaning out old mailing receipts, and just out of curiosity I typed the number into the system. That time it told me my package was enroute. Mind you, this was at least a year since mailing. :nowords: So really, don't bother keeping the receipt past, say, 6 months. :sweat

For the most part, I think the USPS has a very high rate for successful delivery, however, I don't think their tracking system is worth a dime. :apig:

24. I've been waiting a full week now and my tracking still hasn't updated at all =(

25. aquilla- i hope yours updates soon! I should have went there this morning to see if it was there, but they get so mad when i do that. I tell them, "well they left a 1000 doll on my front porch- it was insured and ems, someone HAD to sign for it, but they left it, so i'm going to pick up my packages when i know they are here"

26. I ordered a doll from Denver dolls, this week actually(um wednesday), and got it yesterday. They gave me the tracking information and it never updated, it basicly just said that a package was shipped. Nothing else. I just check again(even though I have gotten it) and it says the same thing. Good thing it got to me so fast and I didn't really need an update on it.

27. I got my package and the head (package) i sent out was delivered safely to its new owner. YAY! But yes...tracking was extremely slow compared to the last times I've had to use it.

28. The problem with USPS is that if the teller at the window doesn't scan in the package, the tracking will never be updated to "accepted" status (for those of you whose tracking says, "the USPS was notified to expect package # ___". The packages need to be scanned in order to be entered into the system for tracking. The best way to ensure that tellers scan a package you are shipping for someone is to ask them to scan it in and tell them you need a receipt. Receipts can't be printed without the scan, so then you know it is in the system.

Additionally, if the package is being shipped domestically it may never update until it is signed for if it does not need to pass through a major sorting hub.

With regard to the first post, that isn't USPS' info, that was Japan's info. Their own postal service is responsible for their customs inspection times. A package does not become the responsibility of the USPS until it touches down on US soil and leaves customs.

As we've probably all seen before, there are many steps a package takes before being put on a plane and leaving another country to come here. When tracking states, "foreign acceptance" that is the same as you taking an item to your own post office for shipment/acceptance. "Foreign Accpetance" is the doll company/maker/seller taking the package to their own post office in their city or town. That info is often accompanied by the town's name, but not always.

The next stage is the foreign customs checking it in. Then, when it leaves their customs, it is listed as "preparing for shipment" because they are sorting all the packages and loading them on the planes, to put it simply. After that stage, tracking usually states that the package has actually left the country.. in whatever manner each country words it.

Then it will touch down here, and go through the stages in reverse until it reaches us. :)

(It works the same from the US to other countries. The amount of time it takes for a package to reach customs for overseas delivery depends on the proximity of the sender/seller to the international postal dispatch hub.)

With regard to Registered Airmail, from some foreign countries, the tracking never updates until the package reaches US soil and enters the US Postal Service system, with others, it may not update at all. Again, it depends on the way the foreign country handles the packages at their end, because our postal system can only give us the information they are given from foreign dispatches.

29. Awhile back, I ordered a wig that never came. It was stuck in foreign international dispatch, and I never received it.
I'm afraid it's happening again... this time I worry because it's a big order. But it's been in FID for three weeks now.;_; With no updates at all.
*shakes fist at USPS* It wasn't an order for just me; it has my friend's doll's wig and a wig for a doll she's selling in there. She can't send him off without the wig. u__u!! Please USPS, please deliver soon. D:

30. Am having issues with USPS as well. D:

I had a parcel shipped from a member in the US around 4th September, and she promptly provided me with the tracking details. Did a quick check on USPS’s tracking page, and item showed up as being lodged for processing/delivery. A day after, I tried checking it again, and it then said that there was “no record of this item”?! The status has said that ever since till today.

I’m a bit worried now because usually, even if it doesn’t appear to be updated on USPS’s site, I can wait a few days and it should appear on Australia Post’s site when it enters the country, but checking AusPost’s site doesn’t yield any results either (no item found).

What puzzles me is that it DID show up initially for a day, and then disappeared completely. I just want my little boy home! *is frantically worried*

Has anyone had the same thing happen to them – where tracking appears for a while, and then completely disappears from the system?

31. Yes! I've been having problems too. Things from China used to take no more than 5 days to arrive but now I've had it take as long as 3 weeks! And just when I'm thinking a package is lost I have the mailman come to the door with a whole gob of things from overseas. I was just thinking they were being lazy and letting them pile up over at the post office. Hmm I wonder what's going on.

32. Well, still nothing new on my end. I ordered in the beginning of August and was told it would be here in two to three weeks. it shipped only a few days later. And since then... nothing.
Sigh. Nothing, nothing. I'd like for my items to arrive now, thank you please. I understand that something went on a few weekends ago--I don't quite remember, but it put the mail on hold for a few days. I wonder if that's still affecting USPS?

33. Wow, my USPS tracking has updated practically every day, and so has my Parcelforce tracking...even when the parcel was still in the US! It's like you're talking about a different company!

34. I am in the same boat, I am awating an Unoa sist kit, purchased recently from the US. The seller shipped her on saturday, and it is now wednesday with no updates on the system, other than "....has been notified to expect a package" or something like that.
I have even tried parcelforces site to no avail.
She was shipped prority and I know that takes 6-10 days, but it really worries me that she has not been updated.
Have any of you who were waiting for their parcels had any luck?
Thank you!!!
Bev
