Using Temporary Transfer Tattoos on Resin Dolls

Dec 11, 2004

    1. I've read here and there that it is possible to mod dolls with temporary tattoos and then use sealant to keep them there.

Is this greatly harmful to the dolls in the long run?

And what sort of sealant would you recommend I use?

I went to the toy aisle in Walgreen's, and they had Ed Hardy temps, so I really couldn't resist. >> Kaitou's skin's been nekkid for far too long.

    2. Oh. Also!

If I want to pierce them, I don't suppose twirling a sewing needle would be sufficient?
      ^^;

I really want to pretty Kai up, I just don't know where to start. I don't have that much confidence yet.

    3. As long as you seal the doll well, a temporary tattoo won't cause any harm at all. There are a lot of threads about the different kinds of sealants (try looking at the stickies at the top of this subforum). For piercings, there are also many threads on the subject. You can use a jewelry drill to make permanent holes, but many people use white glue to attach piercings so they can be removed with no holes left behind.

    4. Sweet.
      Thank you. ^^

    5. OMG, I had the exact same feeling and question! I bought those Ed Hardy Tattoos too! XD

As for the piercings, use the teeny tiniest drill bit you can find and twirl that. You can get really really tiny ones.

    6. I actually used a teeny-tiny Dremel bit (#105 Engraving Cutter) from my local hardware store to pierce my girl's ears. For facial piercings glue would be the way to go. And I've got a few of those Ed Hardy tattoos myself :)

    7. Don't use a sewing needle to pierce the ears unless you plan on heating the head in some way.

Just pushing/twirling a needle may result in stress cracks in the resin since all you're really doing is pushing the material/resin. Using a tiiiiny drill bit would actually take that material out of the way and lessen the chance of cracks my a lot.

    8. you sure can use temp tattoos..... i did my Zelda almost 2 years ago, and she is as fresh as the day i did her....... a simple coating of MSC was all used...

    9. I can't wait till the summer now, when I can break out the MSC and tattoo Crys... I'm getting really excited about this now! XD

    10. Where does one find small enough tattoos though? Most of the ones that I find are too bit, and if small, they're silly :(
If there's a place to buy online that'd be awesome to know as well XD

    11. i just cut out the parts of the large tattoos that i wanted to use.

    12. The Ed Hardy set has detailed "Doll Sized" tattoos. You can see them on Miss Ally's doll. They're meant for kids, I think, but the smaller size is just perfect for the dolls. It doesn't lose any of the original detail either :)

    13. Ah, wow. Didn't think of cutting out the parts I like! Thank you :)

      And
I'll have to look at that set, thank you ^^

    14. Soom have some temporary tattoos for sale and sometimes Dollmore, but not right now.

    15. Does anyone know -- Is there tattoo-type paper you can run through a printer to make your own tattoos?

    16. google is our friend : Clicky

    17. Papilio vs Waterslide? Anyone have experience with either of these ink-jet tattoo papers?

      Thanks Lulu!

    18. I Just got my first BJD a few weeks ago, and im ecstatic about all the possibility i can do with him. One of the first things i wanted to do was mess around with some tattoos. I noticed some of the company's, like Volks, sell them just for dolls, but i have a dozen or so normal ones laying around my house. Is there a diffrence between them? Im terrified the ones made for humans can ruin his resin, but I really have no clue. Does anyone know if they would be harmful?

    19. They're fine to use, as long as you seal your doll first. There's a thread around here somewhere about temporary tattoos, try searching.

    20. I don't know personally as I haven't any experience with temporary tattoos so I don't know if the ones for human are the same as the one for dolls or not...but I've noticed on some dolls , over time, temporary tats that are used as dolls tats instead of being painted on - the adhesive in them that sticks them to human skin, it turns an odd color. I've seen some dolls that the once clear/transparent area turns greyish or milky. But I think it may also depend on how well it's sealed before and after the tattoo placement, because then I've also seen tats on dolls used with temps that are years old and look as good as new. So be sure to seal really well.

    21. Thank you! But, i was reading the ingredients used to make the tattoos I have, and it says its made with oil... I heard oil is harmful to the resin, but will it not matter if I seal the doll first?

    22. I'm not quite sure whether that would protect the resin or not; honestly, I wouldn't risk it..

    23. If you spray protection on your doll, is it ok to apply those sparkly temporary tattoos that you see in stores? Some of them are absolutely gorgeous and much better than anything I could do myself. I was wondering if they would damage the doll and also if anyone has any experience with applying and then taking off at a later time.

      Thanks so much. :?

    24. I haven't used the sparkly kind, but I HAVE used temporary tattoos meant for humans on my dolls. A lot of people have. Seal first, seal again after (once you are sure that tattoo is completely dry!) and you should be fine. Some issues I've seen people talk about are that they can be easily chipped if in the wrong place, some can run a small risk of staining (just like certain colors of acrylics have a higher chance of staining, even through sealant), sometimes the tattoo will remain 'tacky' or a little 'sticky' and not fully dry, which can cause issues with sealing over-top of it and cause dirt and dust to stick, and sometimes they can be difficult to get off (just like some face-ups are harder to remove than others)

For the ones I've put on, personally, I've had easy removal of the ones I wanted to remove, some chipping on ones I hadn't intended to remove, and one that took a LOT of scrubbing to get off. But all in all, that's just like the differences in face-ups, so it doesn't bother me. I like to use them, and will continue to do so.

Also you can search for temporary tattoos and come up with at LEAST one thread about using them.

    25. Where can I find temporary doll tattoos to use for my iph eid size doll? I am looking for playboy bunny small enough to place on the chest but not for permanent placement. I need one that can be removed when no longer desired and will not affect the resin of my doll. Any suggestion will be highly appreciated....
