Using Studio Lights??

Jun 23, 2011

    1. Hey guys,
I love photographing my dolls, and usually use my light tent or, in the case of my MSDs, just my studio lights. They aren't hot lights, but I'm worried they will yellow my dolls. I only have them in the spotlight for a few minuites at a time, but I don't want to be ignorant and accidentally ruin them for the sake of not inquiring.
Does anyone know if this is 'safe'?

      Amy :)

    2. I just know I answered this quite comprehensively quite a while ago ... oh yes — here's the thread.

This is what I said then:

But as I say, this is only relevant if your studio lights are tungsten/incandescent bulbs (halogen etc), not fluorescents of strobes, which are much more UV intensive.

      Hope this helps!

    3. Thank you :)
My lights are the kind that don't get hot. Are they hallogen?
      This was really helpful :)

    4. I don't know, really — "lights that don't get hot" is a description that covers a wide field, from fluorescents to LED's. Probably they aren't halogens, though, as these usually do get hot. Very hot.

Tell us what make & model of lights you have, and we'll see if we can tell you what kind they are.

    5. I use a light tent all the time with great results. I have a complete lighting set up that my hubby bought me and it's amazing! Lights, camera, action! Its for the smaller 16" dolls so it might be tough to take pics of my bigger dolls now that I'm collecting them again.... trial and error!

    6. The thing with lights is that they need to emit their energy somewhere, and there aren't all that many light sources that are very narrow banded... If they don't give off much energy as heat (which radiates in the longer wavelengths, infra red), they tend to emit more in the shorter ones (ultra violet). And it is the ultra violet that yellows resin.

Hence, there is in the most general of terms a danger that "lights that don't get hot" might be more likely to yellow resin than other types of light...

The thing is, without knowing which lights you have, I'm just guessing. In order to give you better advice, I'd really need to know which specific lights you have.

    7. Thank you so much guys, you're all so helpful!
Dragon, I'm not sure which lights theyare as I no longer have the box. I do only have my dolls under them for a few mins at a time though, surely this won't make a difference?
      What do you think?
      xx

Jansonoma: I have a light tent too and it works wonderfully! I can't use it for my MSD girls though and I'm just concerened that my studion lights wiothout the tent will damage them x

    8. really good information to know.:)
