Using MSC without spraying; small area application

Apr 22, 2005

    1. I'm going to be giving two MSDs face-ups within the next couple of months, and am currently scouting for / researching face-up products and techniques. :chibi And here is my latest question:

      I love the feel of the uncoated resin, I also would prefer to leave it uncoated, as I don't plan to expose the dolls to sunlight much at all. Is there a way to only use MSC where it would be necessary during face-up? As in, if I was going to paint the eyebrows alone, I could only brush some MSC in that small area, then paint the brows, then coat? Or would one need to spray the entire head?

      I figure I could spray MSC into a bottlecap and dip the painbrush in there.

      Does the resin coated with MSC feel much different from uncoated? Would one need to coat the body with MSC if they coated the head, or is it simply optional based on UV protection and all that?

      Thanks everyone~ :grin: I appreciate any answers / feedback I get...

    2. I wouldn't suggest brushing the MSC on. It will ruin your paintbrush, and it will end up with streaks no matter what.

      Also, the MSC can dry in as quickly as 30 seconds depending on the climate and humidity, so you might not even have time to work with it.

      The best way to apply it only to certain areas would be to mask off the parts you don't want sprayed. Use masking tape, or even give something like frisket a try on a small hidden area. It's liquid latex, so it should come right off the doll with no problems, but try it first.

    3. Okay, thank you so much! That is wonderful advice and I greatly appreciate your information. ^_^ And who better to trust with esthetics than Kiriko Moth!! :grin:

      I will try the covering idea soon, maybe even tonight, if I am lucky enough to find Testors' Dullcoat in the hobby shoppe when I go out in a bit.

      Thank you again!!

    4. Also, you don't need to cover the body just because you coat the head. I'd personally reccommend against it because coated resin seems to attract dirt worse than uncoated... ^^;

      Be aware that if you masking-tape off areas to be MSC-d, there might be lines from the MSC to the resin.

      Unless you're in a real habit of stroking their face, just coat the face and not the body. ^^

    5. I've used the technique before (when spraying after glossing and I didn't feel like redoing gloss) and as long as you keep it to only a light layer, there shouldn't be any noticible 'seam'. :)

      There will however, be a difference in the way that light reflects off the two surfaces.
