Hi there! I'm curious if anyone has ever used eyeshadow to paint their dolls? I'm sure hesitant to do it because I'm not sure how the resin would handle it, but I have a doll who I want to add some shimmer to, so I'm exploring my options and have a ton on of unused eyeshadow lying around. Also, I know Pearl Ex is the best brand for adding shimmer to your dolls, but I've also been seeing some no name mica powders on Amazon. Are these any good on dolls, or should I opt for the name brand stuff? I'm always super nervous to use anything that I don't know is reliable on my dolls, so I'm curious if other people have experience with either of these two options.
Definitely don't use human makeup on your dolls, makeup has oils in in since it's made to blend on our faces and that oil could break down the sealant and stain the resin. I can't speak to any mica powders, I don't have a need for shimmer in my faceups, so hopefully someone else can give you some recommendations on that
I use no name mica powders and pigments from eBay. They work great, just make sure it's definitely just a pigment or powder with no additives for human skin
Definitely don't use any human-meant make up on plastic, unless you don't mind permanent staining. Make up is meant to be removed from human flesh after a few hours, so the additives to make it function on human flesh and stay there for hours (despite human skin's own oils and sweat!) will stain plastic. Mica are minerals, so as long as they are pure mica powders and nothing else, any brand/no-brand mica will be safe to use on resin or any other plastic really. I own some sets of the Pear-ex that I got as Christmas gifts a long time ago (from my mom, more than decade ago), but rarely ever use them on dolls. I was eyeing them before then myself for traditional art stuff, you can get smaller sets, sampler sets and even whole sets for not too crazy expensive prices on Dick Blick, Amazon and even sometimes eBay. On Dick Blick you can even get single bottles of the colors you want, and I'd say if you're not a face up artist, they are pretty "sustancial" bottles for the price. Hope that helps. (:
No, you don't want to use any human makeup on dolls, it will stain them. In the future, you can go to the subforum and use the search to see if anyone has asked about using specific materials on dolls. You will almost always get some results because this forum is so old that people have tried literally everything you can imagine
Others have already answered the question about using human makeup in faceups, but if you're concerned that the mica powders will have additives, you can also buy mica sampler sets from soap and candle supply stores, since pure mica powders are used as colorants for both. You can also find pearlescent water colors that you could use to add shimmer and highlight without being opaque the way an acrylic paint would.
Seconding pearlescent watercolors! They aren’t as intense as pure pigment/shimmer powder but I find them easier to work with and they’re not any riskier than acrylics.
do not put human eyeshadow on dolls. It won’t dye the resin if you spray flat paint thick enough, 3-4 layers. But human eyeshadow won’t blend well on resin surface. And most of human use eyeshadow contains oils which is bad for face up maintenance. If you like shimmer you can always buy glitters and mix it with soft pastel powders.
Thank you! The oils are what made me nervous, so this confirms my worries. I definitely won't be going the eyeshadow route! I am a face up artist, but I rarely use shimmer on my dolls, so I'll probably opt for the smaller Pearl-ex jars.
Thank you! As a rule of thumb, I always search to see if a thread has been made before (I've actually revived some long dead threads by doing this, haha), but I tried searching it before posting this thread and had no luck. Maybe I just didn't search the correct keywords? Searching "eyeshadow" brought up so many results that I also could've just missed the most relevant one to my question.
Good to know! I'm not looking for an intense shimmer, so this might be a good option for me to explore. Thanks!
Pls remember that you can put shimmer on earlier in a faceup to dull the effect! Also Arteza mica sets might be a good idea! It’s relatively cheap for a large variety of colors!
