Payment Using American Express GIFT CARD in a BJD-shop??

    1. Hi!

      I'm kinda desperate here, so please forgive me if this is the wrong place to post my question :sweat

      So, the thing is... I received an American Express gift card from a dear Texan friend of mine a little while ago.
      Now, I live in Germany, and on the card, it says "For use only at U.S merchants that accept American Express cards", so obviously, I cannot use the gift card around Germany... :sweat

      So I thought, maybe I could use the card when shopping online for BJD stuff...
      on the little sheet that came with the card, it says... "Use it to purchase goods from online vendors"... so could I use the gift card in any BJD shop out there? I figured some of you U.S. BJD collectors might be able to help me out...? :gingerbreadman

    2. from what I understand they work the same as credit cards, so anywhere that takes creditcards would be good, I could be wrong though

    3. You could try asking the shops themselves. I don't know if many places accept American Express, it's not as common as Mastercard and Visa...

    5. Yeah, if the stores accept Amex you should be okay. A lot of businesses hate them because they charge such high fees to merchants. Check for the logo in the payment options window or on the websites you are looking at.

    7. Well, I've never shopped there but I've heard many people like Denver Doll Emporium and they accept it.

      I wonder if you could attach it to your paypal account somehow...I know it is only for US merchants but still?

    12. I just paid for a Puki outfit using a Visa gift card; I assume AmEx would be about the same. It's extremely easy - just click on 'add credit card' once you've logged into Paypal, and go through the hoops given.

      Dolls and friends
      all accept the gift card ^^

      I looked through paypal also and I can only add Mastercard and Visa... -.-

      But I'll see if I find something nice in the shops that do accept the gift cards...
      (with a doll on her way here, that shouldn't be too hard ^^;; )

    17. paypal won't take gift cards. sorry only bank cards and true cedit cards. i've tried and asked paypal myself.

      And naranjita, I did check Junkyspot, but it says
      So I figured they wouldn't accept the Gift Card...
      I think I've settled with DDE.... might get a Dollzone Carrier there, though 30$ of shipping and additional 20$ of custom fees for a 40$ Carrier do kinda bother me... -.-;

    19. Are you sure? I added my Visa gift card to my paypal account and it was just like adding a credit card. Gift cards do have expiration dates on them. They are void once a year passes.

    20. The Amex Gift Card doesn't have an expiration date. After 12 months, a monthly charge of 2$, I believe, is taken, but the card itself does not expire.

    21. I've used an amex gift card at the VolksUSA site. Whatever site you use must take American Express--a lot of shops in the US won't take it because they charge the shop a higher fee then other cards, but they provide their merchants and customers with a lot of benefits. (eg: security)
      Most shops will have the cards they take listed in the FAQ/about us sections.
      Amex cards don't have an expiration date, so Paypal most likely won't take it. They will take a regular amex though.

    22. yeah i'm sure i tried. it was a visa vanilla card. i wanted to get a small obitsu. and my aunt got the card for me for my 18th birthday. paypal wouldn't take it. and a friend had a american express gift card and it wouldn't do.

    24. I think their international site takes Amex too. You might check their shipping there. I don't suppose you have a trusted friend or family in the US that you could ship to and have them send it on to you? It might be more expensive to do two-part shipping, but it might work. (I can't remember how much it was to send gifts to my exchange sister in Germany)

    25. ^^; Well, actually, the reason why my friend's family in Texas sent me the Amex Gift Card was that the shipping to Germany for anything bigger was way too high... At this point, I wish I could just sell or trade the Gift Card to someone in the US, who can just use it there... -.-;

    26. Oh dear. Sounds like a tough corner. I know the Amex gift cards have a lot of small print along with the fact that they are accepted in a fewer amount of places as opposed to a Visa or others.
      If DDE will honor the card and ship to you, I'd go with them.

    27. Some places don't accept American Express and BJD companies might be just as fickle. I figure though, that if it was accepted that it'd run just like a normal visa, no?

Well, I had difficulties at Dollmore (though they said they would accept the giftcard) because running through their credit card paying system, you have to enter an expiration date für your credit card... and since there is no expiration date for the gift card, the paying system didn't accept the gift card... :/
      I'll go to my local bank and ask them if they -somehow?- can just give me the git card's value in cash... (though I don't think that will happen...)
      Or maybe in the end I'll just send the card back to my friend in Texas, so at least she'll be able to use it ^^;;;

    31. ... I thought I'd post an update to this... ^^;;
      So after all the fuss with dollmore, I just went ahead and bought some stuff at DDE... And it worked just fine!
      Got me some cute puki puki mary jane shoes for 17$ and a Dollheart stockings/panties set for $18.00... Shipping to Germany cost me another 12$ for shipping to Germany...
      So at last, I was able to use the gift card... yay~ ^__^
