Update 2/7/07 First attempt at dollmaking! XD (IMG heavy)

Jan 29, 2007

    1. So, I was planning on getting La doll clay for a while, but finally decided it would be too much of a hastle and just got Super Sculpey. I began sculpting her head on Saturday and so far it's going pretty well. I just don't know how well the foil-removing process will go... Only hope it doesn't squish my work! :sweat

Anyway, here is how she started...

Yikes! What a long face she had! A little later...

      Starting to form the face...

I still don't really like her nose and lips because I think they're too big for her face :doh Also she seems a bit lopsided towards the left...;; Please give any opinions and/or critique!

    2. *bumpity-bump* :)

    3. Wow the work is coming along very nicely. The nose and the lips are a little on the large size, but nice if you wanted to go for an ethnic look.

    4. Oh wow, you're doing great, I must say I am really impressed with those excellent ears!

    5. I like her profile.
All I would do is narrow the bridge of her nose a bit and then blend the sides of the lower lip into the surrounding area to make them a little smaller.

♥ She looks great so far ♥

    6. i love her ears! they are so fabulous!
      MHO:
a bit of blending to smooth the part between the eyes and a little more clay for the browline and bring it slightly lower.
the lips are actually in proportion in the right place so i'd leave them for a bit and then go back later.
and the left cheek is slightly chubbier than the right which is why it's a little heavy on that side.

lovely profile, well done, she's lovely :)
keep going and add more spam :)

    7. Ahhh! oh dear D: Be carefull with that foil Dx.. I've tried making a head and removing foil contless times, and the head just crumbles into oblivion Dx...

It was impossible to recreate the head from the tiny pieces D:! ;3;...

If you can do it without ruining her head, much kudos to you D:!!

    8. ...first time making a doll...but hopefully not first time sculpting cozz that's amazing!
the eyes feel a little too low on the head tho compared to the rest of the face

    9. Dang... that's great!!

I agree about narrowing the bridge of the nose a teeny bit, but that's all I can see to remark about.

    10. I think she's really cute!

It looks like you have natural talent for sculpting. As you mentioned, the feature are a litle bit large for a girl, but other than that she's gorgeous.

I'll be watching her progress ^^

    11. Well, if you think the face might be lopsided, the best way is to take an image of the head face-on, and do a horizontal flip in an image program, or hold the face in front of a mirror. Somehow you really notice the imperfections then.

      Great job so far!

    12. Oh wow, thats your first attempt? I hope mine goes this good when I do it. I really love the nose and ears. The whole head is pretty impressive.

The graphing paper that your head is next to, are those your sketches for the doll? If so, I want to see them :) I'm always curious to see peoples planning stage.

    13. Thanks for all the comments and advise! I have taken them all into careful consideration :) Here is what my doll's head looks like currently - it seems she has evolved so much :sweat I think her nose is a bit long and her eyes are a bit too high...Plus her face is still lopsided! Gah! :doh It's so hard to get symmetry. Also, maybe I could still go a little smaller on the mouth? Or at least the upper lip... Seems like this will take longer than I thought....

    14. Ah, her nose is great, and her mouth is not too big, but as I see the left corner of her mouth is a bit lower than the right (but that can be because of a tiny tilt in the photo, so if you can't see it on the real thing than just please ignore this:))
Heh, now her cheeks look symmetric! Maybe if you made some delicate delve around her eyesockets that could solve the hollowness of her cheeks. Or you could put a bit more clay under the eyes and get the same effect.
Actually I don't think that her eyes are too high - maybe a bit. But as her eyes are not that big, you could always enlarge them slightly towards the cheeks - that way they get placed lower.

I hope I could tell you something useful, and good luck with the head!!

    15. Her eyes don't look too high at all--it just makes her face look longer, which isn't at all a bad thing. (I like long faces. :3) I like her nose, but overall her profile could use a little work. From the front she looks great, but from the side... She gets a little rectangular. o _ o Maybe if you rounded out her cheeks? All in all, though, she's made remarkable progress and I really think she's going to be stunning when she's finished. :3

    16. wow that's so much better. The only problem you have now is that her face is sitting on a flat plane (which makes her profile seem a bit wonky). Something to keep i mind with heads, is that you face starts from the ears (which is opposite sides of the head) and tapers into the nose. So the face isn't flat, but rather on a round/tapering surface. Smoothing some of the cheeks back to look rounder will help. You also need a brow ridge.
but honestly, that is such a sweet face! i LOVE her lips and facial features. Oh so pretteh...

    17. It looks like your doll is coming along well. :) The eyes look really clean. What size of eye is she going to take?

    18. Smaug - Yes :sweat she's a bit cheek-less right now. But I am adding nice poofy cheeks as I type! *thumbs-up* Well...sort of.

Idoru - Thank you for the compliments ;) But I'm afraid I've already lowered her eyes :sweat But I'm sure she'll look cute, still.

illyrimur - Thank you! The cheeks are currently under construction...

Tsukiyono - I believe she will take 18mm eyes? :)

    19. Thank you, all those who supported my long head, but I just had to shorten it a little :sweat And I think I poofed out the cheeks a little...maybe need a little more though - or maybe dig the eyes in more?

      [IMG][IMG]

    20. Wow she looks stunning! and not too long at all! I think most people tend to make the heads too short and forget just how much of our head is lost under the hair line.

Her face is just beautiful, even though they aren't finished she has such pretty eyes!

    21. Oooo, look how far she's come :) :) :)
      she looks so serene !
a suggestion : (probably you haven't got to that point yet) rounding the nose part around the nostrils a little. a small dimple should do it just to define that area a bit more.
i can't wait to see more!

    22. I love the way she looks in the end, and I'm very impressed with her nose.
By the way, how are you planning on inserting eyes?

    23. her frontal visage is so pretty. Something i'd definitly trade for if ever she's cast *wink*

back to the profile: i think there's too much of an indent between her nose and cheek. Normall that area has a smoother transition from a profile standpoint. If that made any sense...

      but yeah. so pretty...*tear*

    24. Thank you for all the comments and suggestions :) They're always so helpful, because sometimes I just can't see these things.

licorice-embryo - I am actually not quite sure yet! :o I've ordered a pair of 18mm eyes for her, which should be arriving soon. Right now the clay feels a bit too fragile to start digging out large holes...I wonder if it would be possible to sand down the insides of the head after baking? I will have to experiment a little (very safely...) :sweat

    25. ^I wouldn't recommend that. Best way to go is hollow out the head and put in eyewells before baking and sand them out further after (uh, if that isn't what you meant in the first place). On my doll, I pushed beads the size of the eyes I wanted, into the head from the inside (that will cause you to have to redo the eyes a few times though, since the clay gets pushed out a lot). After baking I sanded the eyewells out further, first with a file and sandpaper but that took for-freaking-ever, so I finally took the dremel (which took down just a tad too much so I had to add some sculpey back on. You can repair small mistakes by adding on small bits of sculpey and blowdrying them at the highest setting for one to 1.5 hours. That way the stuff cures OK, but the already baked sculpey won't darken any further). Good luck!

    26. I see on your thread that you hollowed out the head before baking. Is that hard to do? Did you just scoop out the sculpey? How did you get the head not to totally collapse (because I'm so worried about that :sweat )

    27. I do hope there's no tinfoil in there -3-....

    28. Looks really great so far! I really like the shape of the face and facial features. I can't wait to see more progress photos :D

    29. What's wrong with tinfoil?

    30. I still havent managed to make a hollow head yet without it collapsing. I have seen some just make a ball of tin foil, then wrap it up with a layer of sculpey, creating the head base onto that and baking it. When its finished they cut the head in half and drilled eye holes in.

Sound's kinda scary to me *_*
