adore doll sculpts that have an unpleasant or otherwise unusual expression. for example, my first doll was a Doll Chateau Laney for her uniquely irritable expression, and my most recent doll is a Maskcat Astrid, as her sculpt has great potential for anger or sternness. are there any sculpts like this that you favour?
Gem of Doll just released a doll with a disdainful look which is pretty cool. I really like Maskcat Agnes because of how grumpy she is
It's a very old sculpt from a defunct company, but the most unpleasant disgusted face sculpt I can think of is Notdoll Lab Nari-pon Toadstool! She was so controversial when she first was released. People tended to strongly love her unique and extreme expression, or hate her and think she was the ugliest doll ever. It was amusing to see all the comments! Another defunct one is Elfdoll K. Depending on faceup, he can look angry, annoyed or serious. DollPeddlar does currently have an old fullset limited one in stock if anybody wants him!
Oh, there used to be a sculpt that was full on sobbing, like open-mouthed wailing, but I'm blanking on who made it (this is probably 10 or more years ago). I wanna say the name of the sculpt was Mona/Ramona? Something like that There's also Angel of Dream Jurgis Wolfman, which in addition to having a normal human and full wolf heads, had the infamous mid-transformation head that got meme'd on a bunch back in the day when it released, though it might be a bit more goofy than unpleasant looking? A more recent one I can think of is JR Shick's Arthur. He's sculpted to look like an older guy and he's got one hell of an eyebrow ridge. I had one, but sold it, cause I realized in person he's just too annoyed looking to be my sweet southern old uncle character.
There are a few 'unusual' sculpts I like for different reasons, like Fairyland Arong and Luts Louis, but I was looking at some gentlemen recently for a whim of mine, and I found myself strangely drawn to Ring Doll's Lu Bu SP. The sculpting leaves very little room for any expression other than rage, and the more I look at him, the more I find him uniquely enchanting. Unfortunately for him, his size is more intimidating to me than his face is
Seconding Notdoll Lab when they were around, they had some especially unusual sculpts. I think it was Bleu Citron that had an o-face lol. One of the Unoa faceplates had an expression like that too. My favourite unusual and unpleasant sculpt was Unidoll Ark. I loved his angry face and deeply regret selling the head I had. Hybrids aren’t for me and I didn’t feel like dealing with the headache of finding a body match at the time. Sadly Unidoll is also defunct.
Ringdoll Mona!! I remember when she was released and there was surge of comments about her, ranging from love to hate to wtf and everything in between. I didn't like her at all at first, but the more I saw her, the more I thought she'd be excellent for a horror doll. She certainly made an impression on anybody who saw her!
Oh, I also remember Mona! Though I'd not buy her, I think she is a decent sculpt and I like her realistic expression. I'd like to bring in Withdoll Jiho Scowling Ver. as a mild example. I like his sculpt and even thought of buying it, but ended up not doing so because something I can't name was constantly bugging me. Last but not least, how about the Puppet by Doll Leaves? She even has a movable mouth!
Impldoll has plenty of strange sculpts like this, although they are all a bit older and not reflecting their current direction much. Glenn, with his smirk for instance. Or all the fantasy sculpts like Triton, Chad, or their White&Black line tend to look quite stern. AOD's Mu Yanzi and Hui Xiang can also look pleasant or absolutely sinister depending on the faceup.
I remember this from an older thread definitely morbid though I hate to admit it's beautifully sculpted. Display next to Mu Yanzi for maximum results.
I love the face sculpt Dollzone's The Hanged Man has. She has an open mouth with upper and lower fangs. I'm styling mine like an angry Japanese ghost, though her expression seems more resentfull than angry.
I have a Mu Yanzi and that would be a hilarious comparison! Though would be perfect if you wanted a doll representation of the Comedy & Tragedy masks!
I have a Spiritdoll Echium who has a deep scowling face that happened to suit the character I wanted to shell. I've reshelled him into a different, less scowly sculpt but any more pleasant expression doesn't suit the character at all.
I recently uncovered this older company when I bought one of their dolls, and a lot of the boys look pretty grumpy. But this one with his stern gaze and wrinkled brow looks like he's really getting read to kick some butt and take names later. He is a HZDoll (Heisejinyao Ziyulinglong) Wang Ye. I love his stern looks.
Sadly, no. HZ Doll - Heisejinyao Ziyulinglong closed a long time ago. I was lucky enough to find one of their dolls second hand.
Oh, I was thinking you wanted something like an ATSdoll GLuttony or Luts Schnee or something more visceral.
I like dolls with unusual expressions, but not gory ones. I was once gifted a zombie head with a face half rotted. I did sell that one off. But I do have Ringdoll Mona and I love her. She doesn't make me sad and I don't think she's a one-trick pony. Her expression can be interpreted in different ways. This is one of my favorite pics of her. Deirdre Ringdoll K also has a rather dour look. Christmas pest One doll I still like, but I missed him as Unidoll went out of business just as I joined the hobby, is their Kaito. Kaito
BJDs with non-neutral expressions are the only reason I got into BJDs in the first place. I was fascinated by the concept of a doll-- something created to be beautiful, admired, and passive-- totally flipping the script on their observer. The first BJD I ever bought has an angry expression, but I also love ones with big goofy smiles for that same reason. I will say, i've seen a lot of emoting face sculpts that don't appeal to me for one reason or another, usually they're too gratuitous or just seem to miss the mark completely. It's understandable that companys wouldn't want to take a needless and potentially expensive risk like that. I still wish unusual expressions were more common tho
I've seen some pretty cool sculpts where the faces have some form of "defect" whether its scarring or whatever it may be. I really love Baldwin IV but his "special" face which is meant to be him with leprosy is still very conventionally attractive/pretty imo, dont get me wrong i love the head sculpt, but I'm wondering if they had a more intense version you could choose, a more accurate representation of his condition, if anyone would purchase it?
@isamomo An independant artist called Birdcube did a head called Xuan Fu which is in that category – the left side of the head has severe scarring, including the nose and mouth. The order has closed, but it can still be seen here: Bird Cube BJD — Dolce Luce Dolls
