Customs United States Customs retention reason: "Other" - What does it mean?

Apr 8, 2008

    1. Oh boy... I've never feared such a thing until now. :(

I bought an obitsu from the UK once and US customs opened the box, and FAILED to seal it back up properly. No green tape or anything.
The doll wasn't damaged, but I was ticked that they open boxes and fail to seal them shut again.

I bought some glass ware from Thailand, same problem except it came to me broken at the stem. Not shattered, but broken like it got snapped in half.
:| The smaller plastic bag was opened, but at least there was green customs' tape over the part of the package that was opened. * not saying it couldn't have been broken during shipping.

Now I'm seriously scared that US customs will be flakey and not re-seal the box with my dolls inside. After the incidents like dolls never arriving and delivered shipping boxes having their bottoms cut open, I'm scared.

Does customs check/open ALL packages or randomly pick packages to search them?

    2. Pretty sure it's random. I'm in Canada, and sometimes I have my boxes held, and sometimes I don't. I've never had them open one, though.

It's really just luck of the draw, I think.

    3. When my doll hit customs, the tracking said the same thing, but he arrived two days later. He was there for a full ten mintues. Your case could be the same. :)

    4. 30% of all packages are opened or stopped by customs and if it's shipped via private carrier (ie. Fedex, DHL, etc.), it's more likely to be opened than via USPS.
Customs can be really ruthless! I had a doll box opened and they called me asking what "resin" was. Then when the doll arrived, all the wrapping was all messed up and my poor doll was laying on his face in a heap! The box was retaped, though, not too good.
Another time I got a little bubble envelope with a doll outfit in it and customs had hacked through it with an exacto knife! Luckily the outfit had slid to one side and the missed it, but when they sealed it up (they used red tape, not green) they only sealed one side! Luckily nothing fell out the gapping hole they'd left!

I think it was just luck of the draw, though. Too bad I can't win the lottery as easily!

    5. They don't open everything.
I recieved a few boxes with dolls from Korean doll companies, and from owners there,
(everything had customs forms on them)not had customs open a single one, same with the dollheart and sugarmag clothes I ordered.

    6. I got this yesterday when I was abusing the EMS tracker button. I waited until today to start freaking out-- because I've read around that this happens a lot and I should wait 1-2 days . . .

What should I do? Invoice? Claim my package? [even though I have no idea how.]

    7. Just wait. "Other" is what the US Customs uses for items that were inspected but will not be charged fees/taxes. Your regular postal worker will deliver the package in a few days, just like any other package.

    8. Thank you. <3

    9. Thank you both, I just ordered my first doll that was being shipped internationally and those same words of "Customs retention reason: Other" had me ready to panic. :sweat I was picturing my poor baby in pieces on a table while they searched him for bombs and anthrax and held him at gunpoint for an obscene ransom amount... I have a flair for the dramatic... but as usual, DoA holds all the answers to the questions that really matter in life.

    10. I just got this. Freaked me out. I don't want them touching my dolly. Do they wrap them back up? Gah!!!

    11. Ive had this status on many packages, and never has one been opened. Its probably that they are researching the paperwork for the item.

      I wouldn't be too worried ^^

    12. My package was never opened either. He arrived safe and sound 2 days after entering customs. I honestly think that was the hardest part of my wait for him. ^_^

    13. Every international shipment I've gotten says that, and none were ever touched. :) Don't worry! Usually Customs through Chicago is pretty fast, too, I've noticed. Just sit back and wait and your box will be to you soon.
