Hello, I'm new here. I don't have any "real" BJDs and I wouldn't really want any since it's much more fun to make my own They're great for inspiration though. Here are progress photos of a doll i'm making at the moment, going from the first photos when I started making her to the most recent photos of her current state. (My camera does not a have a macro setting so the photos are not very good, she looks so much prettier for real) She is made with a kind of polymer clay called cernit. I would love to make moulds of her and cast dolls to sell, but mouldmaking silicone is unfortunately too expensive for me.
so well done!!! I like a lot the shoot with the torso ^^ I was planning to make a fimo (or cernit, is the same thing) BJD but... how will you do the attachment parts for the S hooks? I don't know if cernit will support the structure well.
You should try mold building rubber! Its cheap and goes a long way (since its brush on) Its about $10 USD for a 1Lb jar (Ive made two rather thick molds so far, and it used less than 1/10th of the jar!) Heres a link to the brand I have used: http://www.eti-usa.com/consum/mbldbar/mldbldr.htm It says to brush the mold with talc to keep it from sticking to itself (when you first make it) but Ive used corn starch sucessfully, since talc is kinda bad. ops:
Thanks all of you, and thanks for the suggestion! Actually I haven't completely decided how to attach the hooks, but I'm sure I'll figure something out once I get to those parts. I'll probably just embedd them in the clay, cernit gets quite hard. I sort of messed up a bit on the head since I didn't really think before I sculpted, so it will be attached a bit differently than regular BJD heads I think.
another option you have is to make a mother mold of plaster OVER yout mold of silicon. you can get a pint of tin setting silicon rubber at www.artstuf.com for fairly cheap considering what is usually costs. my husband has done this several times in mold making. but latex mold builder is also really good. But I would suggest a plaster mother mold to give the softer molds some strngth so they wont bend when you fill them agian to make a second cast. good luck she is loking great!
oh wow...she's beautiful. I like that her boobs are nicely shaped and not too big. I can't wait to see her finished!
I love the face!! Edit: Had a look at your website, and your stuff is great . I can see the self-portraitive streak in your sculpt You're very cute. Btw, we share the same birthday.
Thank you very much! The doll actually started out as a self portrait, but I abandoned the idea because i wanted to concentrate on making it look good without also having to make it look like me. I've been told it still looks like me though.
Hi, Im also new and working on a bjd of my own since I cant afford all the beauties I want yet! She's looking really sweet! I especially like her eye shape and soft inocent expression..somewhat pixi-ish. may I ask how did you manage to sculpt her with a hollow head? Did you put something in there to hold the shape or just hollow out as you went? Nita
Thank you! All of her parts are hollow, I buildt them up around aluminum foil bunches that I pulled out when the clay was baked.
Thanks for the info Johanna. I will have to try that for the body parts. I already have the head started with ...of all things an oak gall inside Nita
This is really unfair...I wanna see everyone's dolls FINISHED and i keep seeing these beautiful beginnings/middles and I'm really excited to see how they end up...I'm such an impatient person. This one looks like it's going to be really great!
Ouu, very nice. ;o You are veery talented. Seriously. And.. XDD.. Offtopic: WE HAVE THE SAME NAME. YESSS. I'm assuming so anyway, because you're Swedish, so the pronounciation is the same. eee. XD and omg. XDD;;; You are so pretty! I've just gone through your site, and I just realized that I've seen your art before. I don't remember from where, but I've seen it before. ;;
Anyone else see a "little sister of soony" in this doll? I think she's absolutely adorable...I'd probably buy that head if you decided to do molds of it. you ever gonna finish that cute thing?
Ohh, good luck with this! I am familiar with Cernit, I hope it's working well with you and not practically melting when it gets too warm from your hands, that's a lovely doll you're making!
I finally have some more progress photos And thank you! I actually thought of the Soony thing today when I looked at her.
Its really nice to see some progress! The joints look good and the proportions are looking more natural with her all together like this.I like the knee design with the break just under the kneecap. It looks more attractive ,I think than the break above or right at the kneecap. Is this cured clay or not? If its cured you can scrape with the flat edge of a razor to get lumpys off. Well done ! Nita
Thanks! It's cured and I've been scraping a lot on her, but I haven't finished around the knee joints yet.
she's looking wonderful! Those legs are really nice... remind me of unoss legs which is a good thing ^^. I didn't realise how tiny she was - how beautiful! Thanks for posting more images!
 Shes really lovely! ^___^ Her leg joints look like fit perfectly, and I agree her legs are pretty. She has really cute knees! I'm having trouble with the joints on mine how did you figure out the correct size they needed to be? I guess you could measure huh lol.
Thanks! i just fiddled around with the joints until they fit together well. I shaped them, tried them together, shaped again, baked the clay, carved some, put on more clay, and so on
I am still just so enamored with her headsculpt ^^;;...i really like the progress going on with her body...ooh! i wanna see her finished!
Thanks Bunnii and Armeleia! I have made feet now so I took some photos. The photos are really bad since it was dark when I took them, and her face never seems to show up good in pictures, the lips blend in with the background. She is not stringed together, I just balanced the parts together on that chair.
I managed to balance her in a standing position (she's still not stringed) so I had to take a few more pictures!
Two more pictures! I love this doll so much! I have gotten some great information on resin casting and I will try to make casts when I have bought the materials. If all goes well they will be for sale
Love your doll, ofcause  I'm just wondering about one thing... Where the *censored* did you get those beautiful eyes? Are they for sale in Sweeden or online? *want them*
In the earlier pictures she's wearing really cheap, green 10 mm eyes by Tallina's. In the later pictures, the standing up ones and the ones on the chair for example, she's wearing a pair of greyish blue U-noa eyes I got from a girl on livejournal.

Johanna!!! Ohmygosh, the penny just dropped -- I just realized who you are, I know you from deviantART!! I just love your doll, she's coming together beautifully . . . you are so talented!! -- Andi (ashbet on dA too!)
Thank you! I have seen you on da! I really like your portraits, especially this one: http://www.matermetis.com/Vision/2004/index.php?image=Darkstar
Awww, thanks!! She's a dear friend of mine, and I really enjoyed painting her portrait My current favorite piece of yours is "Zebra", although I adore so many of your works!! (Especially "Pretty People" *blush!*) Looking forward to seeing your doll as she progresses further -- do you have a name picked out for her yet? -- Andi
I haven't decided on a name yet, but I think it will be a french one at least. New picture, I have finally gotten started on the arms. The lower torso part looks strangely short in this photo though. She's also not wearing her head cap so the head looks a bit small. And thanks kaka!
I never got around to commenting here, but I adore your little girl! I really can't wait to see her finished and would love to see them for sale someday! Best of luck!!
she's so sweet! Here eyes and lips are just adorable.. If you are going to sell resin versions, I am very interested.. How tall is she.. and is there a possibility of elf ears?? *I adore elfs* Be well Carol outback Australia
I don't know when I'm ever going to finish her, I'm just so lazy with this, but here are some new photos with some sketchy makeup. there are more photos at my flickr if you are interested: http://www.flickr.com/photos/johanni rattimoth: Thanks! She's about the size of an U-noa, and I don't think I'll be making any elf ears. I'll be making lots of other exchangable parts though, if I ever stop being lazy and finish her already!
I'm glad to see her again!! I hope you do finish her, She's really beautiful! I would love to see her all together and with a wig!
oh I am so jealous at your leg-sculpting abilities. those are exactly the legs that I tried to do with my doll and they ended up just looking like sticks....they are perfect...and her face is so cute! arg! do more work and post more pics!
