The DD Nero I'd ordered from Mandarake arrived yesterday and I've finally uploaded the pics I took while unboxing her! I've never done an unboxing before so it's just a ton of photos taken in casual context, nothing fancy. Please excuse the really bad editing on this pic, I was trying to crop out my couch also yeah, I still have my christmas tree up back there, don't judge this pic is actually taken after I'd taken everything out and put it back in, but it does show the contents of what was in the box! Minus the doll itself. Some random outfit view at the bottom~ Skirt not pictured. I'm really glad it's all lined in white fabric on the inside. Inside the box were also two pamphlets, one was a booklet about dollfie, and one was a little outfit guide for dressing up Nero, which was helpful! I love her huge sword! It's practically as big as she is. It was weirdly greasy for some reason, so I put gloves on to handle it. I'll have to clean it later. her shoes and leg armor are really cool too, they're very big, and the shoe portion of it is actually a foot part, so you have to take her feet off to put them on. They were also greasy, so I need to clean them later as well. extra eyes (they look very different than her normal ones though?) and her wig! first look! she's very cute, and I love that she can look both sweet and fierce depending on what angle you look at her from. one of the clasps on her outfit fell off while I was trying to dress her, and it was the only clasp on that particular piece, so I need to fix that before I can dress her in her fullset. It didn't seem worth the effort to put everything else on for her to be missing the torso of it. So I dressed her in an outfit I'd purchased beforehand, although it had a sizing defect and I needed to tuck something in and replace the bust area with her fullset bust cover / strapless bra thing. overall I think it looks good! Kinda sad about the defect though. Then I decided I might as well do a photoshoot, so I set up something on the table in my dollroom quickly with what I had from previous photoshoots. This is a pic from my phone, but I did take out the actual camera and take some shots that I'll post later. She was a bit large for the setup so I really need to get some new props. And here she is sitting in the display waiting for me to fix her fullset clothes! Overall I'm surprised at how good her condition is for a doll released in 2011. I guess it's because she was listed as unused, the previous owner didn't seem to have ever even taken her out. Her wig is a bit low quality, but I could always commission a new one. I would like to get one with her hair down, or one without the red ribbon, but her current wig looks ok as is. This is my first 1/3 scale doll and I was amazed at how huge she really is, and now my 1/4 BJD feels so tiny in comparison I've also never had a soft vinyl doll before, and I wasn't expecting the name to be so literal. She is really soft, and you can even squish her body. She also holds poses really well, she's very sturdy. Getting into those poses, on the other hand, leaves a bit to be desired. She doesn't seem as moveable as my resin doll, but I don't really mind. I'll probably not buy any more 1/3 dolls from now on unless I somehow find an affordable DD Miku or Len. I don't dislike the size at all, actually I quite like it a lot, but I think it would be too overwhelming for me to have so many big dolls! She feels so substantial it's a little intimidating. ---
I’ve also encountered weirdly greasy plastic parts with anime figures (especially ones like Figma that come with small accessories), my best guess is that it’s lubricant to help the pieces come out of their molds. Comes right off with hand soap and water
Oh, it's good to know that it's not some age-related plastic decay or deterioration then. I'll give them a quick wash then.
Nero looks really nice! The greasy stuff could also be plasticizer that gets mixed with pvc. It's what makes the pvc more flexible. Over time it breaks down especially if it's in a box not opened for a while. With no place to go it forms that greasy layer. If it doesn't come off with a mild soap and water clean, soaking it in very diluted soap wash also helps.
She looks great! I love the background setup for the photoshoot as well How was the shipping experience from Mandarake? I have shopped there in person, and have seen they are pretty upfront about any potential defects or damages, so I have always had a positive experience buying there.
Thank you!! Thank you as well! As for the shipping experience, it was probably the best shipping experience I've had within the hobby so far. I've ordered from them once before this time (for doll clothes), and both times the damage descriptions were very generous. The clothes didn't seem damaged at all to me, and this doll feels practically brand new! But I do really like how much detail they tend to put into descriptions of potential damage. The shipping time was also amazingly fast, the doll arrived in barely 1 week's time, which was really surprising. I thought it'd take months.
