      Method and Materials
To create this outfit, I first decided my girl would represent a black cat, as crossing her will make you very unlucky and seeing red. I wanted something that incorporated both red and black and looked cute with a hint of danger. I have created her entire outfit myself, except for the shoes, which are from Code Noir. I found the skirt fabric on Etsy, and built the rest of the idea around it. I created my own pattern for the shirt through trial and error, testing it until I liked it. It is made of a black jersey knit, folded at the top and created from one solid piece. The sleeves, neck and bottom are zigzagged right along the edge to give a scalloped look. A tiny bow was created from ribbon and hand-sewn on. The skirt is a cotton cat print, black netting and thick bias tape. I gathered the material and net separately by sewing a straight seam on the machine, then pulling the thread to gather them, and followed that up with sewing them to the bias tape, which I then folded and stitched in place. Ric Rac is sewn by machine over the hem at the bottom for a playful effect. A snap holds the skirt closed in the back, and a pearl button adorns the front of the waistband. Her accessories consist of a headband and kitty bell collar. The headband is made of wire, bias tape and lace. I made the ears by machine and attached them to the bias tape, which I then sewed into a tube and slid onto the wire, stitching both ends closed to keep from scratching her and bent it to fit her head. The collar is made from ribbon and a tiny jingle bell. It is handsewn, and closes with a snap.

    3. Single sentence description of your cat concept.
Based off the value of accepting life's occurrences whether good or bad, I came up with the concept: "the cat of fortuity is only a cat of ill luck, when he meets the owner who'll name it as such."

Doll company, body type & head sculpt
Head: Doll Family H - Xiao Xin, Body: Spiritdoll Elegance Boy Body

      Method and Materials
      Materials:
      - synthetic fabric: patterned white/red, black sheer, white and brown faux fur
-other fabric: navy blue, white, black
      -red embroidery thread
      -gold thread
      -wire, chain
      -small bobby pins
      -polymer clay
      ---
Vest: To make the wrap that goes under the vest from white fabric, I ironed in some folds and sewed them in place. To secure I attached hook and eye clasps. For the vest itself, I lit the ends to prevent fraying, and added a decorative knot with embroidery thread.

Sleeves: I simply sewed together the pattern and decorated with gold thread. To make sure the sleeves did not fall I made them fairly tight, so I removed hands first to put them on.

Collar (?): Not sure exactly what to call it ^^; but I created it with white patterned fabric. I used the "wrong side" of the white fabric as the pink border by ironing off center. I decorated with gold/red thread and pom poms made with faux fur.

Pants: By increasing the width of a regular pants pattern I created pleats on both front and back sides, and added a waistband.

Tail/ears: I sewed a tube for the tail and triangle shapes for the ears, then trimmed the fur shorter. They are attached with the bobby pins.

Shoes: They are made with the black fabric and are a simple slipper design, with a piece for the sole and 2 pieces for the sides.

Non sewn embellishments, etc: For finishing touches I created cuffs and a choker out of wire, and added to the collar. Long strips of sheer fabric are tied around the wrist. I added chain and polymer clay beads.

Clothing inspiration: I drew the clothing design from mostly ancient Chinese clothing, with certain Persian and Japanese elements as well. Though perhaps not the traditional image of luck, I try to tie it with the concept that the individual is the one who perceives their outcome when sighting their "cat"

And... that's pretty much it, thanks for reading! ^^

I used a variety of materials including lace, cotton, shiny fuzzy and stretchy materials mostly found in my piles of scraps. To make her pattern My poor girl was covered with a plastic bag and duck taped, I drew my lines then set her free. I used old fabric to make a mock version, then re-sewed the entire outfit in the materials I chose for her.

The dress itself is made with black and silver cat themed fabric and lined with white knit fabric. It was mostly sewn on the machine, but the closure is hand stitched velcro. The hat and ears are made with felt and mostly machine sewn, though the silver embellishments were hand sewn. The belt and tail are also machine sewn felt, with a bit of wire inserted to give it the stiffness it needs to pose and hand stitched silver embellishments.

For this outfit, I made a pattern and then used black and pink cotton fabrics for the dress. I also made all the bows from the same pink cotton. The ears, paws, tail and feet covers are made from "beaver" faux fur which is super soft. The ears and paws also have pink felt accents. I accented the dress with lace for a little more of a Lolita feel. The dress and wrap were all machine sewn, while most of the accents and fur work were hand sewn. The ears are attached by thread and glue to the wig cap, which I also made with yarn wefts and a cotton cap. With exception of the bells, shoes and shamrock choker charm, everything was hand made. I had a lot of fun creating this look from my original idea :)

This outfit is made entirely from recycled ladies undergarments and sleepwear, and every piece for this outfit (except the shaped ears, headband and tail) consists entirely of rectangles to save on fabric. The skirt required the vast majority of my fabric allotment, so I needed to keep the rest of the outfit very simple to utilize as little fabric as possible. The bodice is basically a stretchy tube top that fastens with snaps in the back, sewn with multiple lace scraps that are hand applied with special stitches to allow for the most give. The sleeves are extended stretchy armlets with lace pieces added. The dramatic skirt is made by gathering vintage chiffon strips between old lace panels. Hand-applied, recycled lace pieces adorn her headband with cat ears, stuffed and wired cat tail, and collar (choker.)

I used two different weights of buckram and heavyweight interfacing to achieve the sculpted shape of the cat ears and cheeks, the shoulder pieces and the hip pieces. The fabrics all came from my fabric stock and include velveteen, crushed velvet, chiffon, lamé, brocade and jersey. I drafted the patterns from scratch. Once all the pieces were cut and mostly sewn by machine I used various hand stitching techniques to attach my handmade hammered wire filigree, and embellish the ensemble with beads and sequins. Then I finished the remainder of the sewing by hand.

      Method and Materials
When I first read about this contest, I immediately knew I wanted to do something with the "un"lucky aspect of the title, and I knew the doll I wanted to use as a model would be perfect for this. I started drawing and imagining; a grumpy yet playful kitten that's always and everywhere looking for mayhem. After drawing it out, I started collecting my materials. I used lots of lace, and more flowy and lose material, since she'd love to play with that, so why not also wear it as well? On her skirt I added "13", to represent both anniversary of DOA, but it ofcourse also refers to the unlucky number 13. Her paws, headband and cattail are made of felt, that feels and looks like fur. Afterwards I added some bells, around her neck and around her kitten tail, which I'm sure she loves to play with (I'm sure she'd chase after her own tail alot!), but it's also an indicator for YOU that mishief is arriving, and you better take cover! Now that I'm done designing, sewing and writing this entry, I think it's time I'll go feed my fish.... Now that I think of it, I haven't seen my unlucky cat in a while, I wonder where she's at...

      Method and Materials
For fabrics I used, black crepe satin for straps and bib, white lace for bib, fake leather (painted black with acrylic paint) for the mask, some of the paw pads, and bib, some black fabric from an old pair of sweatpants for the main body of the costume, some white fake fur for the paws, belly, and the tip of the tail, and some light canvas material (painted gold with acrylic paint) for the lucky coin purse.
I also used gold paint for edging on the mask and black paint for the characters on the front of the purse)
For the other detailing on the mask and paw pads I used pink, white, and black thread. The costume opens in the back with black snaps, as does the purse though a decorative button was sewn onto the strap closure, and the mask is fastened with a small hook-and-eye. Sewn to the bib is a small jingle bell for added decoration.

To make the metallic fabric I layered randomly cut shapes of aluminum tape over top of a base. Then to add rivets to it I pressed a pencil tip into the tape. Hot glue was used to add the radioactive symbol on the front, with more tape layered on top of it. The metal was hit with black paint, which was rubbed off immediately, leaving behind accents where the tape overlapped and the rivets. Clear fabric was cut to resemble the broken glass container that held the radioactive material. Concentric circles were cut from a sports shirt and sewn together to make the multiple layers. On side of the circles was trimmed down to give the skirt a flowing angle. The air jars on the gas mask are tiny glass jars used in jewlery. The mask was sewn together and holes cut out to barely allow the jars to fit through. The wire wrapped around the top of the jars was sewn to the inside of the mask to add extra security. The center of the skirt circles was uniform throughout and was sewn to resemble flowers blooming on the strap and hip of the skirt.

    14. Single sentence description of your cat concept.
      Black Lucky Cat

Doll company, body type & head sculpt
      Fairyland Chicline Rou

      Method and Materials
The main outfit is all made out of black acrylic blend chiffon; the underwear is made out of thin spandex material. The shoes are made of white thin lining material, and black matte fabric for the uppers; the soles and insoles are made out of black vinyl. I wanted them to look like dojo/karate shoes. The belt/cat tail is made out of the same black matte fabric as the upper shoe part, I added a piece of wire to add movement. Every part of the outfit was hand-sewn to avoid damaging the delicate chiffon and to have the smallest seams possible. The only exception are the shoes' soles, which were glued on, but the lining, insoles and uppers were all hand sewn as well. The lower leg part is tighten with hand-made D-rings made out of jewelry head pins. The bib can be unbuttoned all the way down; I used eight size 3 black metal snap buttons, and hand made the covers out of black vinyl to represent cat nipples. The cat ears are also made out of black vinyl and have a small piece of wire to give some of its shape and the base of the ear. I tried to make the outfit seem as cat-like as possible, without it looking too costume-like. I went for a black cat, because I feel they are unfairly ignored in shelters by potential cat parents, and as a result are euthanized based on unfound myths due to their black coats. There is a high number of black cats that are put down simply because people still believe in unfounded tales in this day and age; it's depressing, so I wanted to make a fierce yet happy-go-lucky black cat, who is anything but unlucky!

      Method and Materials
I created the pattern and tested it. Then I cut the pieces for final outfit and sew it with a sewing machine. The things hand-sewn are the ears and the snap fasteners, also the tail was secured on the dress by hand.
Materials used: Four different cottons of which three are solid colors and one had cat pattern on it. Black short Minky fabric. Black cotton jersey for the trousers. White cotton lace and black elastic lace. Two snap fasteners.

I used many kind of materials: taffeta, silk, brocade silk, venice laces, lace trims, lace fabric, tulle, jersay, decorative trim, gold tims, pearls, marigold, artifficial leather, artifficial fur and little bell. Most of the outfit has been sewn on mashine, the details and beads have been sewn by hand. I have made a shirt, pants, vest, handcuffs, ruffle, 2 pairs of socks, ears and tail. I was working on this clothing set for a week, all my afternoons, but my boy seems to be quite satisfy, so it was worth it! ;)

Doll company, body type & head sculpt
      Dollshe, 18MPure body, Rosen

      Method and Materials
I wanted to create an image of the young alley cat, which brings bad luck to anyone he can meet on his way. For this purpose I sewed a pretend leather coat with faux fur (this fur is combined with the tail faux fur). Also I sewed vest and painted the "13" number on it with a black acrylic paint (as a symbol of a bad luck). I made shorts from denim fabric, tore it a little and decorated it with a chain.
I finished the image of my Unlucky cat with the hat from knitted fabric with "cat ears", the paper-mache cat mask and small necklace with a cat bell (it symbolizes the domestic origin of my Unlucky alley cat).

I used black faux suede material for the main body of the kigurumi and the ears, the latter which were sewn on by hand. The Faux fur used for the tail was sewn into a tube, pulled correct way out, and a piece of armature wire was inserted into the tube. Snaps were sewn onto the tail and front of the kigurumi, and a pink satin bow was added to the tail to finish it off.

    20. Single sentence description of your cat concept.
      Lovely cats and charming catnip

Doll company, body type & head sculpt
      Volks SD10 Nono

      Method and Materials
      I used:
      silk jacquard in light pink
      beaded lace
cotton fabrics (sheer for the lining and stiff for the petticoat, knitted for the knee-long socks)
      lace trims, elastic lace trim
      felt
paper roses, silver bells, beads, snaps, embroidery threads

      I made:
a lined top with short sleeves, snap closure in the back, handmade cat&catnip embroidery and a bow with paper roses
a skirt and a petticoat to give the skirt some puff, the skirt has two types of lace trims, handmade embroidery and a felt tail
      knee-long socks
headdress decorated with lace and roses, with cat ears made of felt and a bell
a neck piece with purple rose and silver bell
      cat paw gloves

Top, skirt, petticoat and socks are machine-sewn, lined or with serged hems. Headdress, neckpiece and gloves are handsewn. The most time-consuming part was to make embroideries and most satisfying and enjoyable - making the headdress.

    21. Single sentence description of your cat concept.
"A cat's the only cat who knows how to swing" - I took the idea of a modern steampunk swing-dancing cat from Electric Swing Circus's modern electroswing cover of "Everybody Wants to be a Cat"; secodary inspiration was from the costumes from the musical Cats: Everybody wants to be a Cat (bonus track), by Electric Swing Circus

Doll company, body type & head sculpt
      Fairyland Minifee Rohan

      Method and Materials
The base layers are tights and arm-warmers in a striped jersey.
The corset pattern was drafted on my doll's body and made up in cotton fabric with stretch lace at the top and bottom. I broke up 2 human necklaces for the chain embellishments and sewed them on. The "eyelets" at the back are guipure lace trim and it is laced with a gold ribbon.
The skirt is a black and cream lace with a black tulle underskirt, both sewn to a broderie waistband and laced tight. The tulle has a high-low hem so it sits under the outer skirt at the front like a petticoat, but is visible for extra length at the back. The tail is a dyed lock from a teeswater sheep fleece sewn to the skirt band and it matches the locks in my doll's wig.
The bolero is made from a baby's sock (the cat face design was part of sock) and bias binding with a crochet edge.
The ears began as scraps of bicolor fine corduroy, finished with cotton bias binding in 2 widths - the wider one was used to form a channel for the headband which is made from a faux suede choker. The earrings made from a few scraps of the necklace I used for the chain on the corset.
The leg warmers & arm cuffs are made from a faux fur trim.
The choker and leg harness are handsewn from faux suede human chokers (everything else in the outfit was sewn by machine). I added more chain to the harness and made the last of the chain pieces into the heart necklace.

Japanese maneki neko (lucky cat) that was turned into a human.

Doll company, body type & head sculpt
DollZone Mo on old DZ 45cm boy body (from 2007)

      Method and Materials
The main inspiration for this outfit was a Japanese maneki neko – lucky cat.
This set is based on traditional Japanese outfits and consists of: pleated hakama pants, a short sleeveless kimono, haori jacket with painted kanji characters for ‘good luck’ that can usually be seen on maneki neko figurines and 5 sakura flowers in places where family crests would be on a formal kimono (all made from black fabric I bought during one of my travels), white tabi socks, a cat mask inspired by Japanese kabuki and noh theatre (sewn using fake black leather and red felt, then painted) and a red ribbon collar with a bell (another detail seen on maneki neko figurines).
Kanji, sakura flowers and details of the mask were hand-painted by me and all parts of the outfit were sewn entirely by hand, without using a sewing machine. Sakura flowers are also decorated with small beads.
On my main pattern pieces photo I didn't include sleeves of the haori since I initially wasn't sure if they'll be a part of the outfit, but later I decided to add them since I had some fabric left.

Doll company, body type & head sculpt
Doll In Mind Azelia sculpt on a Dollzone NB58-002 body, 1/3 size

      Method and Materials
I was able to use some of my favorite found items that I had had for years for my Cat Couture Entry. I carefully selected colorful quilted sections from a silk Indian table runner for the Cat helmet and shorty vest. I embellished them with ruffles made from scraps of recycled sari silk ribbon that I ironed flat and pieced together to creat the lengths that I needed. The metal and bead belt on the flocked turquoise tulle skirt was made from a deconstructed necklace that my daughter had once given to me. I embroiled the bottom with vintage gold colored embroidery floss. The ties for the helmet are made from sari ribbon scraps and the gold beaded Pom Poms are vintage finds from a thrift store. The cropped knit owl top and stockings were made from a repurposed sock. I used some silk knit turquoise and grey fabric for the knickers that I had once found in the bargain section of a fabric store. The fabric gave me the perfect soft, gentle drape that I was looking for the knickers since I knew that I wanted to make rows of gathers at the knees and waist. I wanted to give my outfit a playful feel by embellishing it with things that my real cat enjoys playing with like little balls and feathers.

Material list: Repurposed silk table runner, sari silk ribbons, metallic sock and metal & bead necklace.
Vintage gold Pom poms and gold embroidery floss
Knit silk grey and turquoise fabric
Dyed Feathers, glass beads and modern Pom poms

      Method and Materials:

      Faux Leather
      Black Tulle
      Black Polyester
      Black Lace Cloth
      Fur Cloth
      Garter
      Lace trims
      Ribbons
      Beads
      Sequin
      Wire
      Magnets
      3 Leaf Clover Key
      Hook & Eye

      1. Cutout all patterns made by me.

      2. Sewn leather corset, no need for boning since leather is a little hard and can stand on its own. Added details such as beads/sequin, lace trims and ribbons by hand. Sewn stretch fabric at the back of corset to cover the back of the corset.

      3. Added lace trims on black tulle and black polyester cloth.

      4. Gathered black tulle and black polyester cloth with lace trims on a thick garter to create a skirt. Tulle goes to the front while polyester at the back. Added details on the polyester cloth using beads/sequin, lace trims and ribbons by hand.

      5. Sewn lace stockings using the black lace cloth. Cutout the ribbon for the other leg and created knots to create a unique design.

      6. Sewn fur ears and tail. Since fairyland has built in magnets on their heads, I added magnets on the inside of the ears. Added some wire on the inside of the tail to make it poseable.

      7. Cutout lace trim, added a 3 leaf clover key and a sequin to make a choker. Used hook & eye so it can be removed anytime.

Materials included lace, ribbon, elastic, cotton fabric and many colours of felt! Plus some velcro and other connective things!
Method was very straight forward, a pattern was used to make the base of the dress and bloomers and the rest was guessed. Everything down to the shoes is hand-sewn!

    32. Single sentence description of your cat concept:
I based my cat costume on Savannah cats - domesticated, but not so far removed from their wild ancestors as most house cats.

Doll company, body type & head sculpt:
RSDoll Dev; RG line ver. Racius body

      Method and Materials:
      • red silk (waist sash, gloves, collar)
      • black silk (vest)
      • cream, tan, and black patterned silk (pants)
      • spotted faux fur (ears, tail, paw slippers)
      • black faux fur (trim on vest, gloves, ears)
      • black suede (slippers)
      • peach felt (ears)
      • black lace (gloves)
      • gold embroidery floss (gloves, sash, collar)
      • black ribbon (ears)
      • cotton batting (ears, tail, slippers)
      • wire (tail)
      • snaps (collar)
      • elastic (pants, tail)
      • gold bells (collar, gloves)
The pants are primarily machine-sewn, with elastic at the waist and ankles. The vest is hand-sewn, with black fur to mimic the fluffy fur on a cat's chest. The gloves are hand-sewn as well, and lace up the inside of the arms with gold embroidery floss embellished with small bells threaded through the lace trim, and more fur at the wrists. The sash is raw-edged silk with two rows of gold embroidery floss stitched along the edges. The collar has gold embroidery floss embellishment as well, with a large gold bell (gotta know where that cat is when he's sneaking!). The ears and tail are spotted faux fur stuffed with batting; the tail is wired and held on with elastic, while the ears are on a thin ribbon with peach felt inners and an extra tuft of black fur. The slippers are soft black suede and more spotted fur, stuffed with batting to look like paws.

I'm not unlucky anymore, will you love me now?

Doll company, body type & head sculpt:
Lillycat Cerisedolls, Cartoon Body, Millie Choupie

      Method and Materials:
For the cat hood I cut up pieces of black lace and sewed them together to create the shape of the hood and the ears. It is laced in the front.
The bodice of the dress is made from the same black lace and is also cut up and sewn together to create the shape. It is also laced at the back. The skirt is made from black silk organza and is cartridge pleated to a waistband of the same material. There is a snap at the back to hold the skirt together, and the lace of the bodice is sewn on top of the waistband. I hand made the two tone green clovers which are made using a lace tatting technique and they are attached to the skirt. I couched the "silver" metallic thread in the shape of a horseshoe and sewed beads on top for the nails. The rabbit's feet are made from faux fur with thread wrapped at the top and attached to the skirt at the top so they hang loosely.
      Everything is hand-stitched together.

Off-white Chiffon for the blouse with a black semi-opaque material for the raglan style sleeves.
Fake Fur for the legwarmers and collar.
Gold chains for the bolero accents.
This gold pattern thing IDK what is called to accentuate the bodice and act as 'cat ears'.

Doll company, body type & head sculpt:
Volks SDCute girl body (medium bust), Renee sculpt [1/4 size]

      Method and Materials:
Drafted the original pattern straight off the doll body and drew the accessory parts by hand. Made using mostly recycled fabrics, except for the gold fabric for the backpack which was found as a remnant. Main pieces assembled using a sewing machine, hems and details added by hand. The backpack and hoodie both have working zippers (and a tiny bell on the backpack), and the hood is fully lined. The "luck" character on the backpack was hand-drawn and cut from felt and sewn to the bag, and the elbow patches were embroidered in chain stitch.

I drafted and sewed the pieces as I went along, so I couldn't assemble them all in a single rectangle, but each image shows a green mat which is 12" x 18", so it should be clear that all together it is much less than the allowed yardage. For the green undershirt (top right) and the leggings (lower right), you can see that I started sewing a couple pieces together before I remembered to take photos, but it should be obvious that I used nowhere near the 24" x 45" of allowed fabric. (Her necklace/collar in the other pictures is made of a few very small strips of fabric too, but they're just braided and tied, not sewn)

Doll company, body type & head sculpt:

      Method and Materials:
My cat's ensemble is entirely hand-knit, in keeping with the DIY spirit of the Women's March. I incorporated drop-stitch "runs" to hint at cat-clawed fabric, both in front and back. I charted the Sabo-Tabby and text in Excel and knit in fair isle. I mattress-stitched each piece to finish.
