I recently purchased this project doll from a local community member, this doll suffered a really bad dye job some years ago and I'm so thrilled with how well the dye is coming off. They used idye poly dye in 2016-2017 on an Angell-Studios . I've been working on slowly removing the dye and I'm very happy with the results! I'm just in need of a better head. He still has some marks on him, that I don't think are from the dying process, I'm hoping to sand or buff them off if necessary. I'm excited to document this journey, he is my first 1/3 doll, I own one other MSD I did the faceup on, but only that.
You're doing a great job! I've done this too, and know how much work it is. But the results are worth it!
I've also read some people have success stripping dye from resin using an alcohol bath, but I haven't tried it yet.
I’ve tried that—I’ve only found it helpful for taking off a little dye, to try to even out colour. If I want dye off, acetone is definitely the best bet!
I tried using acetone and cotton swabs/make up pad with limited success. Have you ever tried soaking pieces in acetone?
My system is actually to put acetone and the part on a jar and then swirl the jar—you’ll watch the colour basically leave the part like a magic trick.and then I remove the part and hit it with some running water just to get all the acetone out fast. The parts are virtually always in for less tan a minute, and it works. Also, it makes a big difference, but I use 100% acetone, which you can get in a big jug at hardware stores, or as super extreme nail polish remover
You changed the game for me, thank you!!! I've been experimenting with dyeing but my hand couldn't take the HOURS of sanding I was doing when the results were wonky. You've saved me a ton of hand cramps!
