Types of tripod mounts

Jul 2, 2011

    1. I've been wanting a tripod for ages but too broke to get one, and lo and behold it turns out there's been one tucked away in my mother's closet for years. However, the top looks completely incompatible with my Canon PowerShot A590, which has only a little hole for a screw at the bottom. The tripod looks like some sort of plate slides into it (maybe a quick-release plate?).

I really know nothing about how tripods work. Are there adaptors or something like that I could get to be able to use this tripod?

    2. It is not unlikely that the quick release plate follows some sort of standard — either some manufacturer's own such as Manfrotto, or a de facto standard such as Arca-Swiss. If you take the tripod to a camera dealer, they might be able to find you a plate that fits and that you can screw onto your Canon.

Or, you can post a pic of it here, and hope someone can point you in the right direction!

    3. If it's a brand name tripod, it's quite likely that you are able to get a plate for it. If it's a tripod with an exchangeable head, you can get a new head (ball-type or 3D-swivel-type, for example). Heads can get reaaaaaly expensive. more expensive than a tripod itself, but you can get rather cheap ones, too, that should suffice for your rather light camera. Heads have a standartized mount so it does not matter, what head you buy, they all should be able to go on your tripod AS LONG as it's possible to exchange the head. With cheaper tripods you can't and then it could potentially be hard to get a quickrelease plate, too.

It would help if you posted a picture and the brand.

    4. Actually, I've discovered there was a quick release plate attached to my mother's video camera, so I do have a way to use this tripod now!

Thanks for your input, though. :)
