So I’m going to wade into the prospect of making my own wig(s) and had a question about making a wig with two colors, specifically how to make the bangs and side hair/side burns a different color. I know the technique of how to lay a wig and make a cap, but I’ve really never done one myself since I usually reroot my fashion dolls. So for example, this character has black and white hair. His bangs and some side hair are white while the rest is black. Would I simply alternate which wefts I lay? Or is there a specific way to do it?
Alternating wefts is usually the way to go. I don't know if there are other ways. But if you already have a light coloured wig, you can dye it different colours in sections, or ombre using synthetic fabric dye. Be aware of staining on your dolls though.
Yeah just lay the colors where you want them, alternating the different colors as needed. It helps greatly to make marks on the wig cap where the different colors are going to go, that way you don't lose track. Just remember that the hair is going to hang down, so it won't only take up the space you mark. ... I hope that all makes sense.
My Faline's yarn wig is green on the under layers and autumn leaf-orange on the top. I took photos of the process and posted them on Flickr: Complete two-tone wig < finished wig Fiber gradient < first process photo here. Hope this helps and good luck with the project!
