Aesthetics Two faceups for critique!

Jan 20, 2014

    1. Oh gosh, today I decided to bust out the old paintbrushes and do my first two faceups in about a year and a half. I know that there's definetely more room for improvement (I'm so rustyyyyy *sob*) and as such would appreciate any advice. Dolls are a very old Ringdoll Ryan (from just after Ringdoll opened - my first doll, very yellow. *sob*) and a Soom Kivi.

Known things: The black smudge on the Kivi's nose - This is just a little whoopsie on my part - I still had a little bit of paint on my hands when I moved her head. I've already cleaned this off with magic eraser. The Ryan's eyelashes are a little funky, especially his right eye. Anything else would be appreciated comment wise.

    2. I can't offer you any tips but I can try and give my honest opinions ^^

I think for both cases, the lines used for the eyebrows and lashes were too abrupt and rigid, almost as if the paint was too dry so maybe dilute them down so you can get a better consistency? I think there's an improvement on the lines in the second face up and I like the blushing on them, though the shape of it can be a bit more varied, I don't know what style face-up you're trying to go for but natural eyebrows are thinner towards the end.
Blushing wise, I think you can be a bit more adventurous with the blushing around the corner of the eye, including on the lower lashes. It took me a while to realise that the line for the lashes doesn't need to be too dark because they can be enhanced with blushing.

I like the style of the first doll! I can't wait to see how you'll develop the blue lashes and liner ^^

    3. I truly love the first doll, Ryan's coloration is very vibrant and alluring! As an artist, color is everything and it does catch the eye. Nice lips on the Kivi doll, too. Personally, I like to see the lines thinner on the outside of them, but as big as the pic is, I'm guessing they're terrific in person. :fangirl:

    4. I like the ideas of the smoky eyes around the ringdoll. It looks really good. The colours all seem well chosen for each faceup too. For any advice, I would maybe suggest using more pastel on the eyebrow before doing the strokes, the lines seem much darker than the base of the eyebrow. The eyebrow strokes on the ringdoll are ok, but for the Kivi, they look a bit too spaced out. I think the lips could use a bit more colour around the very bottom lip as well, it kind of looks like it's missing a bit. Don't be afraid to be a bit adventurous, it can always be redone if you don't like the result :D Well done!

    5. They both probably only need a little more subtle blushing. I like the work, blushing will showcase more. On the Ring Doll, you can darken the blushing on the brow area, you can even experiment with the direction the strands of hair are laid. The eyes are beautiful. I think the poster above me surmised the same. I like your colors....

    6. Ahh, thankyou everyone for your critique. I've already experimented with some of the suggestions on some of my smaller dolls (I'm in the middle of a complete collection overhaul at the moment - so exhausting but so rewarding as well!) and I believe that these techniques are making my faceups so much better! I'm probably going to wipe Deake (the Ryan) on the weekend and have another go at his very bold faceup, and maybe Sumner as well and see what I can do with them.

    7. Okay. So. New attempt. I can't figure out what it is about this one, but something seems... off. She's supposed to look a bit worried, and I should probably have blushed her a bit more, but there's something else the matter too that I can't pick out. Eyebrows are still really hard.

    8. Yes, the face needs a lot more blushing on the planes, otherwise the paint lines are very stark. When I blush i try to darken the receding areas in the face (like right under bottom lip to contour the chin, sides of nose bridge, the receding part of the nostrils to define the nose shape, blush inside the cleft between nose and upper lip , sides of face to define cheek and jawbone, around eyes to accentuate eye wells, even the forehead some at the hairline. I use a combination of a fleshtone just a tad darker than the resin of the doll face and a peachy-pink hue.
Your blushing the tear duct area is great in this last one. The upper eye could use more definition, with shading and/or lining.

Hairs of eyebrows only grow vertically right at the start , right by the nose, the first 1/4 inch or so. After that, the hairs start to slant down, at the far end, closer to the ear side, they lay horizontally. Try and draw that on paper. Try to study photos of faces, focusing on the eyebrow hair implant. Go study your own in the mirror. Then make worried faces at yourself in the mirror, and see what your eyebrow muscles do. Bring your sketchpad to the mirror with you and sketch your own worried face, specially the eyebrows.

Every day for a week, make yourself draw 5 pairs of eyebrows on paper, a left and right one. Work on hair direction and symmetry. If you are right handed, start with the left eyebrow (hardest one). Eventually, when you have hair growth and symmetry down, start trying to work on shapes and "heaviness" (full or thin eyebrows, bushy, skimpy, long, short, round, angular etc) and male/female.
Ask someone to sit for you and up close, study their eyebrows for five minutes. Then try to sketch the main characteristic of that particular person's eyebrows.
I am thinking that after two weeks, you will start to enjoy painting eyebrows the most ! they do so much for a doll's expression!

      Have fun!
