Just For Fun Twelve Questions

Jul 31, 2016

    1. 1. How long have you been in the hobby?
I feel in love with DOD Duncan back in 2008 or 2009 I believe and from then on I dreamed of owning a bjd.

      2. Tell us one thing that draws you to BJDs.
I love every thing about them, the character/story creation aspects, the customization, the pose-ability, really there isn't anything about them that I don't love.

      3. Did you wait a while before buying your first doll, or jump right in?
Well seeing as I ordered my first last September, I'd say I waited a while. xD

      4. Do you collect any other types of dolls?
I collect a lot of doll types from bjds (resin and non), Monster and Ever After High, Blythe, Pullips, Tang Kou, and the occasional porcelain dolls.

      5. Have you learned any skills because of your dolls? Is there a skill you still hope to learn? (Photography, sewing, wig making, etc?)
Wig making is the only skill I've really had no experience with outside of my dolls, but most of the others are definitely skills that have gotten more practice/use since I've started collecting.

      6. What's your favorite way to interact with your dolls?
I play with them, talk to them, pose them, dress them, change wigs and eyes, and I'm going to be doing my first bjd face up soon.

      7. Do you share your dolls on social media? (Link us!)
Not really atm though I've been thinking about it.

      8. Where do you store your dolls?
Most of them are on a small side table beside my computer.

      9. Do your dolls have characters, or are they pretty objects?
All of my dolls have characters/personalities of their own even if they just started as pretty objects.

      10. Are you more likely to keep a full set intact, or customize the doll to your specifications?
I suppose it would depend on the full set. Odds are even if I kept the outfit/face up eyes and or wig would end up changing.

      11. How important do you think the community is to your hobby experience? (Either online or in person meetups.)
The community has been a wealth of information even if I'm not a very active part of it. So it is important but only to a point, I could enjoy my dolls a great deal even if I wasn't a part of any communities.

      12. What advice would you give to someone looking to get into the hobby?
Most importantly find what you enjoy. Research as much as you can but more than anything enjoy your dolls in whatever way makes you happy.

    2. 1. How long have you been in the hobby?
Since 2005, but my friend told me about these dolls a year before that.
      2. Tell us one thing that draws you to BJDs.
      Aesthetics.
      3. Did you wait a while before buying your first doll, or jump right in?
I concidered for almost a year after my friend had told me about her dolls and then I saw her doll. When she was ordering her next doll she offered to help me and ordered my first doll with hers.
      4. Do you collect any other types of dolls?
Yes, I've recently got few Azone Pureneemo dolls and they are multiplying as well as the BJD. Ouch.
      5. Have you learned any skills because of your dolls? Is there a skill you still hope to learn? (Photography, sewing, wig making, etc?)
I've studied as a dressmaker and I do feel like sewing for dolls have definitely improved my pattern making skills and sewing a lot! I'd like to think that I've come far from up-your-nose photography to something nicer, even if I do have a lot to learn still. I want to learn how to make wigs and shoes but that would require some time which I don't have at the moment.
      6. What's your favorite way to interact with your dolls?
Currently sewing, photographing and just admiring them. Undressing and redressing is always fun and finding shoes for the outfit. :D
      7. Do you share your dolls on social media? (Link us!)
Kaisu A Little Book of Bluefairies Sorry I really can't link them in the pretty way here. >_>
      8. Where do you store your dolls?
Some are sitting/standing in the showcases. Some are on shelves in craftsroom. I'm always trying to keep them out from the straight sunlight so I've covered the showcases doors with something non-see trough materials. WHich is really crazy becouse I can't see the dolls and that's something I enjoy a lot, just looking at them.
      9. Do your dolls have characters, or are they pretty objects?
They have names, some of them have somekind of background story, nothing too spesific.
      10. Are you more likely to keep a full set intact, or customize the doll to your specifications?
I try my best to make a doll look how I like it. If I buy a fullset I've liked all the items it comes with, that doesn't change the fact that someday I'll change the clothes or maybe pay for new face up.
      11. How important do you think the community is to your hobby experience? (Either online or in person meetups.)
I've gotten so many friends trough communities in global and in local scales. For me it is really important to see other people in the internet but also in real life. Nothing can beat the conversation with friends who know what we all talk about and are interested in. We can moan about things and joy about things together. For me it's great I can share the hobby both ways, these busy days internet has come more important as all my friends are busy in their lives as I am, and not all of them live close by to visit.
      12. What advice would you give to someone looking to get into the hobby?
Don't whine about the price. Don't buy recasts. Enjoy creating new things and worlds with your doll.

    3. 1. How long have you been in the hobby?
I bought my first bjd in 2004. I'd been looking to buy for months before, and knew about bjds a year or two before that.

      2. Tell us one thing that draws you to BJDs.
      They are all so beautiful!

      3. Did you wait a while before buying your first doll, or jump right in?

When I got interested I immediately obsessively researched and bought a doll maybe 2 months later.

      4. Do you collect any other types of dolls?

I have other dolls... Porcelain, Barbies, Hot Toys, Pullips, Japanese kokeshi/gofun/silk... but BJDs have been the biggest, longest obsession--uh, I mean, collection.

      5. Have you learned any skills because of your dolls? Is there a skill you still hope to learn? (Photography, sewing, wig making, etc?)

Dolls have pushed me in photography and faceups and art, so that I've gotten better and gone farther.

      6. What's your favorite way to interact with your dolls?

Dressing them up and going to Meetups and cons and taking photos of them.

      7. Do you share your dolls on social media? (Link us!)

Hmmm... I spam my dolls wherever I can... on various FB groups, on Deviant, on their own website (see Sig), on other doll sites... I used to LJ them a lot but not for years (also see Sig).

      8. Where do you store your dolls?

I need to make a good place for them! So far they are scattered around, mostly in a spare room.

      9. Do your dolls have characters, or are they pretty objects?
I like to make up characters and stories for them. I haven't gotten around to actually writing anything for them, though.

      10. Are you more likely to keep a full set intact, or customize the doll to your specifications?

I like to keep a fullset intact, but often they never even get put on the doll!

      11. How important do you think the community is to your hobby experience? (Either online or in person meetups.)

Very important!!! I practically live on DoA and other doll sites, and love going to meetups and cons.

      12. What advice would you give to someone looking to get into the hobby?
Take your time to find out what you really, really couldn't live without and do your research and save your money. Be patient and friendly and have fun!

    4. 1. How long have you been in the hobby?
      - For about One-Two months now. Still very new.

      2. Tell us one thing that draws you to BJDs.
      - I just love the aestetic they give! They are so beautiful and ever since I saw my first one, I've wanted one.

      3. Did you wait a while before buying your first doll, or jump right in?
      - I waited five years for my first doll.

      4. Do you collect any other types of dolls?
-Not yet since I only have one, but I have a MNF head and a Mirodoll.

      5. Have you learned any skills because of your dolls? Is there a skill you still hope to learn? (Photography, sewing, wig making, etc?)

      - I haven't learned any new skill yet since being so new! But I hope to learn how to make wigs and how to do face ups!

      6. What's your favorite way to interact with your dolls?

      - When i originally saw a BJD, I fell in love. I wanted one just to have one, and then I thought of reasons to get one. To use it for drawing! I am terrible at proportions and I thought a bjd would help.

      7. Do you share your dolls on social media? (Link us!)
-I have an Instagram account! Www.instagram.com/Rexies.dollies

      8. Where do you store your dolls?
      - Right now I just have my head on a book shelf.

      9. Do your dolls have characters, or are they pretty objects?
      - My doll is based off of a RP character my friend and I made up a few years ago, her name is Silver.

      10. Are you more likely to keep a full set intact, or customize the doll to your specifications?

      - I think I would want to customize my doll more to fit my characters.

      11. How important do you think the community is to your hobby experience? (Either online or in person meetups.)
      - Very important! New people in the hobbit (including myself) always need people to look up to in any hobbie. That requires putting themselves out to get noticed and get any help or answer to any questions they may have.

      12. What advice would you give to someonelooking to get into the hobby?

      - Research! Find the right doll! There are plenty of dolls and companies to choose from. Search second hand markets first, if you're not wanting to spend a whole lot.

    5. 1. How long have you been in the hobby?
I've been in the hobby for maybe 3 months? I had a doll when I was 12 but sold it after 3 months due to me not having enough money to take care of her... Poor girl didn't even have a wig lol
      2. Tell us one thing that draws you to BJDs.

I've ALWAYS loved dolls! I love BJDs for their poseabilities and customization. I was the type of kid to get hyped when you could change your character's appearance in video games lol
      3. Did you wait a while before buying your first doll, or jump right in?
The one I count as my first doll is the one I got 3 months ago! I was on the search for literally more than a month trying to decide between I think 10 different boys. I had a character in mind for him but now he honestly looks far different from what I described him to be at first lol
      4. Do you collect any other types of dolls?
I have three Jun Planning dolls! I want to get more but for now I only have three! A Pullip, an Isul, and an Ail. I also used to collect Bratz dolls when I was a kid. I have most of them still and I think I have maybe... 40? Not sure. As I was a kid, I just played with them but I always treated them well... But they went to my little sister when I got older and some have tangled hair now lol. But! I still have my favorite ones as a kid stored right on my shelf infront of me!
      5. Have you learned any skills because of your dolls? Is there a skill you still hope to learn? (Photography, sewing, wig making, etc?)
I've always loved to draw and I used to paint before but with dolls, doing art on a 3D surface is so much more different!
      6. What's your favorite way to interact with your dolls?
I love changing their clothes. It's when I definitely treat them like actual children lol The only part I don't like about it is that I have to take their heads off... Which is a disturbing thought...
      7. Do you share your dolls on social media? (Link us!)
I do on my instagram but it's a private blog
      8. Where do you store your dolls?
On my desk. They don't get sunlight there and there is constant air near me so dust doesn't settle down
      9. Do your dolls have characters, or are they pretty objects?
Both! I give them characters and I always think of them as little resin kids... But at the same time, they're always on display so I can look over and see their beautiful faces
      10. Are you more likely to keep a full set intact, or customize the doll to your specifications?
If I had a fullset, I honestly would keep the whole outfit and the faceup completely default. It's just like my Jun Planning dolls, I keep them as pretty little characters. But if I find that I don't connect enough I might switch them around after a while. But as for now, I only have bought blank BJDs
      11. How important do you think the community is to your hobby experience? (Either online or in person meetups.)
I think the community is important to me in that for one I've bought a second hand doll but also that I get to get tips from people who know what they're doing. I also help out too when I can of course!
      12. What advice would you give to someone looking to get into the hobby?
You are going to need AT LEAST $100 more dollars to fully clothe and decorate your naked doll, so be prepared to spend $400 in total for a $250 doll...

    6. 1. How long have you been in the hobby?
I discovered BJDs in 2006 but only ordered my first at the end of October 2009. She arrived in Jauary 2010 which is the date I always use as a base so - 6 3/4 years.

      2. Tell us one thing that draws you to BJDs.
They are a canvas I can use to create the images my mind comes up with but has no other outlet as i am not really creative per se.

      3. Did you wait a while before buying your first doll, or jump right in?
Depends on how you view it - from discovering them in 2006 to ordering one in 2009 it took me three years but once I got my Mom to accept one as a suitable Christmas gift I ordered asap.

      4. Do you collect any other types of dolls?
I did have a two year stint with Blythes (I still have a few left) but basically BJDs are a collection that needs more full attention (and money xD)

      5. Have you learned any skills because of your dolls? Is there a skill you still hope to learn? (Photography, sewing, wig making, etc?)

I can now photograph really well XD I still wish I could sew tho OTL

      6. What's your favorite way to interact with your dolls?

      Taking pictures of them obviously.

      7. Do you share your dolls on social media? (Link us!)

I do share them on flickr, instagram or my website.

      8. Where do you store your dolls?

They are displayed in four IKEA Detolf cabinets in my room.

      9. Do your dolls have characters, or are they pretty objects?

Honestly, they are both. They are specific characters of my stories but at the same time they are pretty objects. How you view them is your choice.

      10. Are you more likely to keep a full set intact, or customize the doll to your specifications?

I am deadly allergic to anything default. I haven't bought a fullset since six years and I always customize my dolls (or you know, commission someone to do it)

      11. How important do you think the community is to your hobby experience? (Either online or in person meetups.)

I think the community is very important as a resource of knowledge, especially for newbies just joining. It does have its downsides (recast-supporters, confession blogs and the like) but at large I don't think the hobby could work without the community.

      12. What advice would you give to someone looking to get into the hobby?

Think. You don't need any doll you come across and you will regret it big time to just purchase, purchase, purchase without thinking about it.

    7. 1. How long have you been in the hobby?
I bought my first doll back in December of 2007, but I haven't been active for the last while so I guess five years total?

      2. Tell us one thing that draws you to BJDs.

      How effortlessly pretty they are!

      3. Did you wait a while before buying your first doll, or jump right in?

I waited till I had a job for a while and did a lot of research into which sculpt I liked the best and what I'd need to customize it!

      4. Do you collect any other types of dolls?

      Nope! Just scale figures, really

      5. Have you learned any skills because of your dolls? Is there a skill you still hope to learn?

I started to pick up photography but still have a long way to go. I've learned faceups! And I'd like to keep learning how to sew for dolls!

      6. What's your favorite way to interact with your dolls?

Pose them and take photos! :D

      7. Do you share your dolls on social media? (Link us!)

Unfortunately, no, because they're all packed away at the moment

      8. Where do you store your dolls?

Right now, at my mom's, but I usually store them in their boxes in my closet.

      9. Do your dolls have characters, or are they pretty objects?

      Characters!

      10. Are you more likely to keep a full set intact, or customize the doll to your specifications?

That depends on whether or not it was a limited fullset and how madly in love I am with it. If I could have gotten my Camine as a fullset I would've customized him anyway but I'll never customize my Suigintou.

      11. How important do you think the community is to your hobby experience?

Super important! Other peoples' dolls give me inspiration and ideas, and talking to other people about dolls is half the fun!

      12. What advice would you give to someone looking to get into the hobby?

Budgeting is your friend! Don't settle for a less expensive doll when another one has your heart, just be patient and keep saving up!! You'll get there eventually and it'll all be worth it!
