So, I love my funny looking wee Impldoll Xiaowei to pieces, but have been frustrated by the fact that eyes do not fit in her face. She's supposed to take 12mm eyes, but arrived with 14mm that still showed gaps around the eyeball. Pre-mod - this is a cheapo 14mm acrylic eye. What I used: Aves Apoxy sculpt. ("natural" - ie grey, I wasn't worried about colour matching as the part of this mod that show will be covered in paint anyways. Xiaowei's head. Two 14mm glass marbles. Water. I mixed a pea-sized amount of Apoxy and applied it in blobby snakes on the inside of the eye sockets. The biggest gap was showing at the inside corner - so I put more Apoxy there. Then I dipped the marbles in water, and pushed and wiggled them both in until they looked to be in the right position (the same depth etc) (Please excuse my grey fingers, I follow poor practices when spray-painting) I had to remove the marbles fairly quickly (it actually took me couple of attempts because I hadn't wet the marbles enough and the Apoxy stuck to it). And this is what it looked like from the front. I let the Apoxy set-up a bit then ran my scapel around the eyes from out side. 14mm eyes will now fit in her face without distracting gaps. Yay! (Now I need to give her a face again...)
nice! that's very close to what I do when sculpting a new head and setting eyes in. thicker eyewells seem to prevent a lot of gapping. You can also use petroleum jelly as a release agent between the marbles and the apoxie sculpt- granted you may end up with the marble shooting around the room if you grab it too tight. It will be super slick.
A picture truly is worth a thousand words. Thanks so much for posting this, it explains the process very well and I think I could actually do this.
I have this same problem with some of my heads so I'm very glad you posted this! I'd been trying to think of ways to correct this without potentially sanding the eyelids too thin and this seems like a great alternative!
Bumping this! I just got a head with extremely thin eye wells - I was actually afraid to put eyes in him, thinking I might break them! I think this might work to possibly reinforce that area some so I don't panic every time I touch him XD (and want to be able to find this again when I get around to doing it!)
Oooooo this is fantastic!!! So many times I've seen gorgeous heads and passed because the eyes weren't QUITE to my liking.....This is amazing Thank you!!
Is it ok to do this on a doll that already has a face up? Or do you think it would run the risk of damaging the face up too much?
