Tutorial Tutorial: beautiful furniture for dolls

Jun 29, 2013

    1. Awesome. Could you show how you do the fabric furnishing on your wooden items?

    2. Beautiful, beautiful work. I particularly liked the wardrobe/staircase/bunkbed, no small bit of math to make that one work! I know you mentioned plywood, and I may have missed the post, but I was wondering what kind specifically. The plywood I've been using likes to splinter and my edges don't come out nearly so smooth! Do you use a special lacquer/sealer afterwards? Again, truly amazing work, very inspiring :)

    3. I admire you! It's awesome!

    4. so cute and yet so rich in detail !!! Very nice !!

    5. wow
      your work is amazing !
i don't get how you do this (this tiny wonderful house )

    6. if only im this creative, love the work <3

    7. Thank you very much! I will show you how I'm doing a soft upholstery on the furniture soon.
But - I came back from the international exhibition "Fashion Doll X", which took place in Kiev - and I have something to show you now.
Are you ready for a surprise at the rate of 1:8? :wiggle
Can you guess what it is in my hand?

    8. SO anxious to see more!

    13. Too cute! Best slumber party ever, and I love that all the windows make it feel so open. :)

    14. I have never considered making furniture for my dolls before. Even if I did, I would have never thought to make such intrigute pieces.

    15. Oh wow, you make such gorgeous things! I havent made anything for a while and i kinda felt like i didnt have any inspiration. I must say you inspired me! 18. What a beauty!! Cozy thing.

    19. wow! Great!

    20. that traveling box is great! did you start with a carry case and then make all the inside decor and furnishings or did you make the bag too?

    21. I just found this and I'm so impressed with you work and I can tell you love what you do. I'm going to keep watching so I can see more great things!

    22. That case is so fantastic! All of these projects are making me jealous haha

    24. WOW!!This is amazing. I wish I could do that.

    25. Definitely what I need, even though I doubt I could get it right in the first time. But of course, it's extremely amazing and helpful, thank you so much. You are awesome!

    26. Wow, these are so stunning. The progress you've made is amazing. I love the styles you choose for your items. They're intricate and thoughtful. They're also extremely complicated (for me) but definitely not overwhelming. It's a wonderful balance. I'd love to own that throne *__*

Can't wait to see more of your lovely works that your dolls enjoy!

    27. All I can say is wow your work is simply amazing! I am going to have to work so much harder at mine now to get it even 1/2 as good as yours.

    28. This looks pro and amazing! I always wanted to make furniture for my dolls but never knew where or how to start. I hope I have enough patience to do something like this. I have many stories and I have many things to build. I also like things realistic like how your table looks. :)

    29. bookmarked--- must see moooore! Your work is incredible! Thank you so much for sharing it!

    30. I just saw this thread, @Master JuliaS your work is amazing! Do you cut all the wood with the same tool? I am amazed by the details in your work. Love love the gazebo :drool

    31. Very beautiful

    32. Wow... So amazing, I wish could do something like this, lol but knowing how atrocious my handcraft skills are, it may only be a dream. Q.Q

    33. Your work is so amazing! :) I especially love the carrying case. This has inspired me to work harder on my own woodwork! :)

    34. I love your work!
      you're so talented!!

    35. I was wondering if you are a furniture designer by trade? All your pieces are so unique and beautiful, it would be surprising if you werent

    36. Hey, Julias, do you usually draw out detailed concept art for your furniture, or just sketch out something that's about right before you begin? These are all amazing, and I am impressed by the variety. People usually tend to stick to one or two styles, but you have such an incredible range!

    37. Wow! Just found this thread and your work is amazing! I'm definitely inspired to try my own furniture making. I hope you share more of your work soon. Following so I don't miss. :D

    38. amazing!

    39. Beautiful tutorial!

    40. These are amazing. Your work is very inspiring.

Would another type of wood be suitable to do this? Maybe pine? Is the plywood fragile when carved into delicate curves?

    41. Hello! I'm with you again! In the near future I will answer the questions asked to me. I hope someone answers to them will be interesting)
      My new avatar, by me))

    42. Hi, all my friends and guests))
today I will answer your questions (yes, you asked them a long time ago, forgive me for being late)
      Wiske asked me
«Could you show how you do the fabric furnishing on your wooden items?»
I think it will be easier to show the pictures! So:
I prepare the preparation of my product without fabric finishing, monofilament for fabric assembly, fabric for decoration, foam rubber, glue and durable cardboard:
Cut out the cardboard base for upholstery
      [IMG]
I check that the basis matches the form
      [IMG]
Next, I paint the product, because doing it after the seat is soft is not correct))
      [IMG][IMG]
I wrap a cardboard blank and foam rubber with cloth, collect it with a needle on monofilament and glue the crown with glue from the outside (not where foam rubber is))

      • x 2
    43. I gather the fabric tightly, pressing my finger
      [IMG]
Then, cut off the excess fabric, glue it with glue so that it does not protrude beyond the edges of the product when gluing
      [IMG]
      And stick! Tadam!!! The finish!
So, this how i do the fabric furnishing on my wooden items))

      Wiske
      asked me:
«The plywood I've been using likes to splinter and my edges don't come out nearly so smooth! Do you use a special lacquer/sealer afterwards?»
My work with plywood consists of several processing steps. After sawing, I do a rough grinding and round the corners. Then I coat with a solution of PVAc, white glue with water in a 1: 2 ratio. Dry and grind again until all surfaces are completely flat.

      auntbear
asked me about traveling box, which i did:
«did you start with a carry case and then make all the inside decor and furnishings or did you make the bag too?»
I first made the room itself (in the case of the product in question, both sides of the room), and then I sewed the bag according to the size of the product that turned out. Then she glued the bag to the outer walls of the room and hid the joints on the windows with platbands.

      ReginaaG. asked me:
«Do you cut all the wood with the same tool?»
I make holes for sawing with a drill. And I cut everything with the thinnest saw.

      foulmonster asked me:
«I was wondering if you are a furniture designer by trade? All your pieces are so unique and beautiful, it would be surprising if you weren’t»
Thank you, I am very pleased to hear this)) (read about it)
No, my profession is completely unrelated to furniture and even creativity))
I am an expert in the field scientific crimes investigations.

      FuyumiAya asked me:
«do you usually draw out detailed concept art for your furniture, or just sketch out something that's about right before you begin?»
At first, I imagine in my thoughts exactly what I want, what style, and do a sketch. It can be anywhere - in a notebook, in a cafe on a napkin, in my son's notebook))) Then I make a detailed drawing with all the sizes of the room (if any) and dolls. For this, I definitely need a doll! Well, or the detailed dimensions, but then I will worry whether the doll product will fit or not)))

«People usually tend to stick to one or two styles, but you have such an incredible range!»
Sometimes I go to work in jeans, sometimes in a dress, sometimes in a pantsuit. Sometimes I take a clutch bag, and sometimes a backpack)) I like different styles in clothes and in the interior. And it is always interesting - can I do it?))

      borxanne asked me:
«Would another type of wood be suitable to do this? Maybe pine? Is the plywood fragile when carved into delicate curves?»
I tried to make products from solid wood. Wood is more fragile than plywood. Plywood, which I strengthened with glue, withstands falls. Do you know how I trust my products? When it is ready - I throw it to my son, and he catches it)))
He is always frightened, but I never!

    44. Oh, man, this is literally exactly what I needed. I got a couple of chairs and some upholstery for them but wasn't really sure how to go about it...thanks for posting this tutorial! You're very skilled, I love your designs.

    45. Alchemicat, Thank you!
Forgot all about my topic, I will raise it up.

    46. Hi guys!
Not much time ago I came up with a 1/4 format chair, which I called the "Queen"
A few photos, as it was:

    47. Now work on the chair is almost finished.
And I ask you for advice! Please participate in the survey and tell us your opinion.

What kind of upholstery fabric to choose?

The color of the wooden base will depend on the chosen fabric.

    48. Wow, this furniture is amazing. You are all so talented!

    49. Thank you very much!
And what fabric would you choose for this chair?)
It is very important for me)

    50. I'd choose the first one!

      The carving is amazing :D

    51. Oh, I think it would have to depend on the doll and how he/she is dressed. I am very partial to the blues though. If you are selling one on Etsy, perhaps you can let the buyer choose? I would love a chair like this for a Marie Antoinette doll, but I would want the fabric to match her gown. They’re so lovely, really!

    52. Thank you! I tried to invent a beautiful thread.
I think the dress is much easier to change than the sofa. And much cheaper))

      • x 1
    53. You must be good at sewing! I can’t believe how much I’ve spent on beautiful dresses for my dolls... I spend more on their clothes than I do my own. Of course, I can only sew on a button, so what do I know! Your skills are amazing. :abow:

    54. This sofa is so pretty!!!!!! Wish I could find something like this for my dolls

      • x 1
    55. But clothing is a necessity, and furniture is a luxury)) A doll can stand beautifully, sit, lie without a sofa, just lie more beautiful on the sofa)) And in any case, the doll has more dresses than sofas, I think))
Well, I I do not take into account my dolls)) They have more sofas))))

Thank you very much! I am very pleased that you like my sofa)

    56. Wowww this is so inspiring! I love wood block carving and hadnt even thought of using those skills to detail wood for projects like this. I especially love that you can do so much with out power tools. I live in an apartment and its just not reasonable to use anything larger than a dremmel.

Im so glad I found this and cant wait to see what else you make, plus I loveee the Q&A section. Im sure when I start trying to make some items myself in the future it will come in handy.

Thank you for keeping this up and helping us all create our own while you work so hard on your projects!
