Ttrpgs?

Apr 14, 2022

    1. Do you play ttrpgs? What are your fav systems? Do you play or GM or write modules? Tell us about your characters or funny stories!!

It's really cool to see so many dolls here based off people's ttrpg or DnD characters!
I started playing DND a few years ago as a DM (only because no one else wanted to lol), then moved to Lancer, and am now mostly playing DMless games (since no one, including me, has time to be a DM anymore.) Fav games rn are Quiet Year and Told by Starlight. If anyone wants recs for dmless games, especially from the Itchio bundles that have been popular lately, hmu!

    2. Mayyyyybe...

      :whee:

Two sessions into playing Curse of Strahd (character is a riff on Cugel the Clever) and prepping to start DMing Candle Keep Mysteries for a bunch of 6-12 yo's tomorrow. #dndislife.

Have been enjoying solo journaling games recently too tho... Really liked Iron Sworn and The Magical Year of a Teenage Witch by swashtalk. I would love more recommendations.

Also, desperate to play Robin D. Laws' Drama System, but having trouble prying my group away from action-adventure stories. :pout:

    3. I don’t play myself anymore but I still love DND! I watch Oxventure on YouTube to get my fix.
We used to have a group we played with but covid and work has kept us from getting back together again. I think my favourite character was my Druid Aasimir, I was the only good character in our group so I was the party’s angel. Lol

    4. Ooh, I'll look into the journalling ones! I admit I don't do a lot of 1 player games, but I feel a lot of the more worldbuilding games can be adapted to be 1 player/journalling (for example, Told by starlight is technically a multiplayer game but I can imagine it is easily adaptable into a tool to help with worldbuilding)
Also DMing for kids sounds so fun but so chaotic. How is it?

Was everyone else evil??? :aeyepop: that must have been SO chaotic lol

    5. We had a rogue/ranger who could go invisible and and Orc Prince who felt everyone was beneath him who was also a paladin who soaked his arm in the blood of his enemies to please his deity. The orc definitely pulled the rogue to the dark side. Lol. I didn’t fit in but at least I kept the party from killing everyone they laid eyes on. My character was more diplomatic and I gave her traits so she could pretty much talk to anyone. XD It was really fun.

    6. Oh tabletop RPGs! They can be so fun : D

I have never GM'ed but have gotten to try a few different systems over the years playing with friends. The group spouse and I gamed with the longest started with D&D 3.5 wrapped that game after literal years and then went to Pathfinder. Our GM has the Fantasy Grounds subscription: an online service that helps track items, characters moves, and so many other things. Love it! We are going to change the existing game over to Pathfinder 2 with some 5th edition D&D resources thrown in for flavor.

Other systems I've tried and liked are Fate- very numbers light and story based, Thirteenth Age- had a really fun fantasy world setting, and not an RPG but I think would be a really excellent world or scene building tool: the game The Story Engine.

    7. D&D Addict here. Several of the dolls are D&D characters I've had.

    8. Oh how I love d&d! I’m a DM for a small group here where I study. It’s so much fun, I do a lot of home brew. I also am very excited because my players are reaching the BBEG fight next session!! Guess that means I should finally paint his miniature, LOL!

    9. I play a LOT and try to terrorize my GM/DM to the best of my ability while staying within the rules. I also like to try and play with a disadvantage/handicap to my characters (see below for examples).

Current character is a homebrew/5e khajit warlock modeled after a Sphynx cat, chaotic evil, and has a penchant for tempting bards to the dark side by paying them and collecting blood contracts for the Pale Lady. He's a lot of fun and I practically bluffed my way through the last session's dungeon by utilizing my hoard of repurposed clothing and using Mask of Many Faces (invocation). Same campaign has also seen me take an owlbear head, wait until it's rotten, then improvise it as a stink bomb/biological weapon. I have also managed to intimidate a snake into befriending me, and have coaxed a raven as well--needless to say there are too many adventures with our druid and my raven going in incognito with Wild Shape and causing general havoc.

Previous character was a half-orc bard, also chaotic evil, who was a bit of a dandy. He insisted on wearing nothing but the finest silks and outfitting his very large, very beautiful horse (Golgotha) in the most expensive tack money could buy. Same character could not play his instrument (bagpipes) and instead used it to bludgeon people and/or make their ears bleed with how badly he played. Somehow made an alliance with living vegetable people.

Pathfinder is another story entirely. Had a tiefling with some...risque business dealings who couldn't roll to save her life but instead intimidated/outsmarted everything to death, quite literally (an incident involving a naga with self-impaling was the least insane moment of that campaign). Was the quintessential bard, but reclassed as a rogue.

...I have many tales and my current DM can't believe I bluffed my way through the majority of last session without getting caught. It was priceless.

    10. I was going to give you an after-action report, but our game has been postponed due to the apocalypse. Honestly, this whole thing has been such a hassle...

Anyway, in my experience playing with kids is delightful. You just need to be prepared to throw out the rules and make everything as loud and shiny and right-now as possible. Like, if you spend time looking up the armour class of a mind flayer you're gonna lose 'em. Just make up a number, get them to roll, and then make the most exciting, ridiculous thing you think of happen. My opening scene for this campaign involves: an evil dragon the size of a blue whale and an archangel who are happily married to each other, a beholder interior decorator, and a devil lawyer named Ardwelius Nincompoop Diefenbaker.

Also, Told by Starlight looks really cool, thank you! I feel like it might be a cool way to start a campaign of Godbound, which is also on my list. So many games, so little time...

    11. I play dnd with a group of friends and have way too many characters xD I've DM'd for short/ one shot games but not for a long campaign, and I find doing that a lot of fun!

My current character is a water genasi barbarian and she's been a lot of fun to play. We actually have our fourth or 5th session for that campaign this weekend, and some of her backstory stuff has already come up, so I'm very excited and nervous for how things are going to go down with it!

My favorite character, even though I've barely gotten to play him, is my tiefling bard. I think he'd be fun to make into a doll some day, if I could find a sculpt I liked for him. I affectionately refer to him as discount or knock-off Shakespeare because I planned for all his uses of vicious mockery to be Shakespearean insults

I've played some Warhammer TTRPG which was a LOT of fun- the stress system is a really interesting mechanic. My husband really likes L5R, but I haven't played that one myself.

    12. I play dnd too!
My girlfriend actually just started running a Lancer campaign but mech stuff isnt my thing
      I'm currently playing a Kor druid :)

    13. Long-time tabletop player and GM, here... Currently playing 13th Age, currently running Ars Magica.
A lot of my dolls are resin versions of former RPG and roleplayed MMO characters.

    14. Eeeyyy, ttrpg friends! I play a death-by-slapstick dnd 5e campaign and it's a lot of fun. My withdoll Alan is based on Crow, my half-elf "I didn't ask how big the room is, I said I cast call lightning" druid, resident healer, token pretty boy, and tired party dad.

I've played WoD in non-tabeltop venues, and I'd love to try other systems like pathfinder, but coordinating is hard when everybody has to be an adult :c

    15. I love your half elf already

    16. I am a long time dnd player. My first character was a Halfling (I believe) named Hoggle since I was an obsessed with Labyrinth 5/6 yr old back in the days of first edition Dungeon and Dragons. My longest lasting character was an elf fighter mage named Balena. I have a soft spot for her since I created her when I was almost 7 and played her in 3 or 4long running campaigns into early adulthood. If I had to pick a favorite it would probably be my second/third edition human Rhennee thief in the World of Grayhawk campaign setting that my older brother dmd for us for around 10 years. The party had all reached epic level by then and were all but retired. I also have a soft spot for my drow wizards Albryus Ananni'mas and much later Rizarak "Riz" he and my younger brother's gnome illusionist Rezwar managed to spook a camp of humanoids with Riz's faerie fire ability and some noise making cantrips thanks to Rezwar.
My doll Vish is a modern day version of an NPC from a dnd campaign I dmd for close to ten years and I plan to some day shell a few more characters from that campaign as well.
I've picked up the rulebooks for the fate system Myst campaign but have not tried it yet.
Other than a forum story rp with my sister I've not played in around five years or so just due to lack of time mixed with a run of bad health. I would love to play again at some point but I'm very picky about play styles and it doesn't always mesh well with others with the exception of the family/friend group I've played with for years but now we're all so spread out that getting together to play isn't easy/feasible.

    17. Oh hell yes! I play some D&D but I'm not very good at it. I also LOVE Vampire the Masquerade. I run 2 VtM 5e games and I'm n several others. I also love Wanderhome, a GMless cozy pastoral fantasy. And recently I ran a one-shot Golden Sky Stories.

    18. Yes!! I play a lot of different ttrpgs including D&D, Worlds of Darkness titles, Mistborn, Call of Cthulhu, Pathfinder, and some Fate system games and smaller rpgs.
My forte is Unknown Armies, a more horror-based ttrpg with a game system I like. I GM heavily for Unknown Armies and every single one of my SD dolls is a character I use as an NPC.

    19. I am beyond excited!!!! I found DnD 5e stat blocks for almost ALL the Pokemon!!!! Now I need a DnD 5e tutor!!!! Because I don't know how to run DnD. Hell, I can barely PLAY DnD....

    20. That sounds so cool. As for tutoring I've always found just playing and learning as I go works best for me.

    21. I mostly like watching other peoples crazy adventures but I have played.... it did not end well on my part. I'd like to play D&D again, maybe some day I'll have friends to play with

    22. I definitely do! Been playing ttrpgs almost as long as I've been in the doll hobby. The first TTRPG I ever heard of was actually pretty nonstandard, I got a copy of The Sailor Moon Role-Playing Game and Resource Book that uses the Tri-Stat System with 2d6 for my birthday in the late 90s. I never had anyone to play it with as a kid, but tried unsuccessfully to get a DND group together in high school. Finally made it happen in college, was lucky enough to go to school somewhere with a dedicated TTRPG club, and I actually did DM a yearlong SMRPG campaign! It was equal parts too much prep and zero prep whatsoever flying by the seat of my best and lest-effort improv pants, lol, as so much DMing is. I've been exposed to a lot of systems, primarily through oneshots or short campaigns, but my favorite is OG Pathfinder (haven't played any 2.0, nobody interested lol). I've often imagined what my characters would be like as dolls, but that's a dangerous rabbit hole I'm not sure I want to go down... there'd be very little stopping me from getting dolls for all of my favorites. Off the top of my head including beloved DMNPCs I've used with my groups in the past, there'd be at least 7. But I realize in typing this I've already named/based an incoming doll on a DND character I never actually got to play, so... joke's on me :doh:doh:doh

    23. If you haven't already tried Roll 20 you might want to give it a shot. I have had some god luck with joining groups and meeting people through the site. I never found IRL friends to play with (and even IRL friends just to be friends with is really hard). But I have a group of gamer acquaintances now that I play with on a regular basis.

I also JUST found that the person responsible for the Pokemon stat blocks made an entire Pokemon DnD 5E game (It's Pokemon but functions with the DnD 5e mechanics) that I'm dying to run! Not sure how R20 friendly it will be....BUT it's much shorter than reading the DnD player's guide and it's a really well thought out system, so a lot of the guesswork I was trying to put into a Pokemon DnD campaign has been taken care of.

    24. I’ve been playing ttrpgs with my friends for a while, we haven’t as much lately as we’re all pretty busy with finals but we hope to play again soon! I’ve been running two sessions, one dnd session and one VTM session. Two very different play styles for sure! It would be cool to have a doll based off of a character but I prefer to dm so maybe it would be a doll of a beloved npc lol.

    25. Yes, I do roleplay, not for long now, me and my friends started to play last Oktober/November. I'm usually the GM in our group, unfortunately we don't play as often as I would like, but not everyone has always the time to play. We only play Cthulhu at the moment, which was easier for me to understand from the rules. But we still want to try DnD.

    26. D&D is my beloved, my first and foremost-- mostly as a player, though I'm working on being a better DM. Pandemic messed up my regular game but I'm hoping we'll be able to get back to it, and in the meantime I'm trying to put together something on the light-and-frothy side for my quarantine bubbled family to play, where they don't have to worry about it being too serious-- they're all creative people who love co-op play board games, but the math side is intimidating.

I collect TTRPG books, but haven't had the opportunity to play the others-- a few GURPS books, Deadlands, Fiasco, Monster of the Week, and Rememorex make up my current non-D&D collection, lost an old Batman ttrpg book and the one for Firefly when I moved. Would love to get my hands on Bunnies & Burrows, and any non-standard setting appeals to me.

    27. I've never played with an in-person group. I have only played via voice on Discord. I have started collecting TTRPG books :)
I have the V5 Vampire the Masquerade core rule book and the Chicago by Night sourcebook (I run a Chicago game), I love Wanderhome! I have the book and the PDF. I bought Golden Sky Stories and I'm hoping to get Kids on Brooms soon. I have the Humblewood book but I don't know how to run D&D. I run 2 vampire games- one just wrapped and Chicago by Night just started it's 2nd and last season.

I like playing more than I like DMing, but I also like giving back to the games that in just the last year, has brought me so much fun.

    28. I played World of Darkness (Geist) in the past, but although it's still my first love, DnD 5E has taken over. I've played in numerous online games, and I have a long-running "game weekend" with some family and friends just about every month. I've mostly been a player, but I've DM'd a bit (mostly Curse of Strahd), and I'd love to do it again. Actually working on my own campaign right now.

Funny stories abound when you've played long enough, but here's a couple:

I was playing 5E as a necromancer wizard, and our group was facing an ogre. The ogre was holding a deer that it had been eating, and with DM approval, I cast "raise dead" on the deer. After being attacked by his own meal, the ogre angrily yeeted the carcass at our monk, who in a completely serious and calm voice asked: "does the zombie deer count as a missile?"

In another game, my brother was the DM, and I jokingly asked him if I could buy trade goods with our starting money, which is how we did starting equipment. He said anything goes, so I promptly added a chicken and five bags of flour to my inventory. The chicken became a running joke, with my rogue checking up on it after every battle and collecting eggs in the mornings. I kept it in a special backpack, and it ruined my stealth more than once. The flour, on the other hand, got mostly forgotten.

Fast forward to a sneaky mission where we're infiltrating an in-progress dark ritual. We come across a magic circle that's drawn in still-wet blood, but it's beyond a grate we can't get through. Still, we have to stop the ritual from summoning something terrible, so we start trying every ranged thing we can think of to disrupt the circle. On a lark I chucked a bag of flour in, and my improvised roll was extremely high. It hit the circle and exploded, successfully disrupting the ritual. Much to my brother's chagrin, as he hadn't anticipated us actually stopping the ritual at that time.

Now whenever someone calls an item useless, I remind them about the flour, and how it saved us from a boss battle we might not have won. It's a game all about creativity, and you can find a use for just about anything if you try hard enough.
