Aesthetics Trying to up my face-up quality

Mar 24, 2016

    1. Been trying to improve at face-ups and painted up like three whilst the internet broke down.

Many of my dolls are painted to match their bodies (ugh I love hybrids, but resin match is uuuggghhhh), but I don't own an airbrush so there will always be some texture to their skin since I can't do a uniform spray but I want it to be visually pleasing texture. Like some irregularity looks natural, but if it gets too lumpy, it'll look like someone who doesn't know how to apply foundation and cakes it on.

Also experimenting in adding freckles and slight imperfections to skin tone. Granted, I'm not sure how a vampire gets sunspots, lol.

Still working on painting those darned dainty eyebrow hairs and my old foe symmetry.

    2. I don't think they look bad at all. It is difficult to tell texture from low-light pictures, though. It almost looks as if you are trying to do the entire face in acrylic paints. Is that the case? If so, try applying soft pastels with a brush instead, and save the paints for details like eyelashes.

Other than that, I think the color choices look really great and realistic!

    3. The whole head is painted in acrylic because none of the heads match their bodies minus the Az the David Kuncci. The blushing is done with pastel.

    4. So...I just want to say that I really love your art style. You may want a smoother, more gradated effect but that may be the limitation of the materials and not your skill. I, for one, really love the visible brush strokes and high contrast you have created. It is reminiscent of an oil painting and I really like that.

      Just my two cents.

    5. You're style is so unique. Very realistic with that touch of stylization. love it!

    6. @fourmist Aw thank you!

I do prefer a slightly more high contrast look, but I feel a little more yes-no-maybe about visible brush strokes. Though now I'm mulling about doing a doll face-up with more J.C. Leyendecker influence or something like those cel-shaded Borderlands cosplays. I think it would be fun to mess around with. >_> I'm also swerving all over the place when it comes to stylistic choices.

My next face-up is slightly more subtle since I'm trying to get an actor likeness and Rob James Collier doesn't trot around looking super flushed. Though it's a lot more fussing. "yes enough red. no more red. no too much red!"

    7. The great thing is you can always take it off and try again with a new style! I'm excited to see what you come up with :)

    8. I like your faceups and I've only just started myself - so I don't know alot either. However, the eyebrows don't look right and then I realised that in the first and third face ups the eyebrow hairs are aligned going inwards and they should go outwards . i think if you correct that the faces will be good
