Troll doll making

Nov 26, 2012

    1. The beginning of my troll doll making.

Soooo, I have always been possessed by everything that has to do with Swedish folklore av creatures, or as we call the "Väsen". ^^
Especially trolls, they are my favorites and I have been drawing trolls for 10 years now.

When I stumbled upon this BJD hobby I realized that my dream of real trolls could be true, I could make them in 3D and take them out in the woods and make them real.
I made an MSD sizes girl doll last winter (ugly as hell, but I learned so much.), and after that I felt that no I am ready. I started to build in October, so this post it over an month behind. xD
(and sorry for the mobile phone photos)
That's enough introductions I think! Here we go:

here is my first sketch of my doll. My plan is to make him in SD size.

I was planing on making my doll long time ago so I had this joint foam skeleton I made last winter laying around. the spine was not the same as in my new sketch so I just turned the parts around. and I also changed the place of the arms and shoulders.

The sculpting begins! I am Using LaDoll Premix. The legs was a bit to long but I decided to make the shorter when I did the joints. He will have single joints in the knees to make this bent legs pose possible. I shortened the arms to. there was just to much gorilla style.

Last time i sculpted i made the mistake on sculpting all the parts apart, so the design suffered from that. They didn’t work together.
This time I am sculpting as much as I can in to one piece, and the I am taking the doll apart.

    2. Troll face.

Sorry that these are the first updates on the face. i guess I just can’t stand him being ugly so I just didn’t take any photos. xD

This is just after opening the head. I made an faceplate to avoid having to take of the head to often.

The plan is to make long fragile ears and my guess is that they will break easily and be a pain in the ass to cast. So I decided to make the detachable.

Here I have made holes for the ears.

The nose is a little to big I think. made two fast ears for testing out the sockets. Seems to work out. ^^

Lol! Sorry for the Instagram picture. Some more work on the nose and the shape of the eyes. ears and teeth.

The head it to small to hold SD sized wigs so I will have to fix that to. i like he’s face now.

      Hello Glenn! 8D

    3. That is absolutely beautiful! I really love the initial design and by the looks of it, he will turn out wonderful. Can't wait to see more. :D

    4. Loving him , Emma, as you're already well aware I do. :D

    5. omg! this is a suuuuper awesome idea! Looking great so far and I can't wait to see the progress as it goes.

    6. He looks really great! I love love his face

    7. Thank you everyone, I'm glad you like him! ^^

      here is some update again:

I made Glenn these feet some time ago, but after the body developed I realized they might be way to small. But I like the shape.

The body is progressing, I have started to mark up the joints. But I have trouble with the arms, if I make them longer he cant sit on the desk as I work. I will have to take them of to finish the length.

And the head placed on the body

    8. Oh my gosh this is AMAZING! I have a friend who is super into trolls and she would be beside herself to have a doll like this. :D

    9. Amazing, really :love

He would match the universe of Shadowrun (a roleplaying game) so well !

    10. I haven't heard of that game, but now I have to d osome reserch! : D

      Thank you! ^^
You should show her my troll then! I know I would be happy xD I hope to make him in resin so =3

    11. Okey, I will post one more update now!

As I said earlier, the arms must come of before I sculpt more on them. So of they go!

I guess that went well C:

Making some muscles on the arms.

I was so excited about the hands so I took of the arms basically so that I could start with them.
I followed the tip in the Yoshida style book and put cotton on the wires, it worked fine. ^^

I'm doing double joints on the arms. But I'm not sure yet if the will be heavy and hard to pose. But they are quite hollow.
Tha hands are an really slow process for me, and I'm super picky about the design.

    12. Amazing muscles ! Great job :love

    13. Some new updates,

these updates are old now, but I havn't been working on him at all ...

      I took him apart ...

      Sculpting troll butt. 8D

      Fixing the head piece.

Testing out the arms to see if the proportions are right.

      Making torsojoint

I made the feet way to small, he looked stupid, so I made new ones. ^^

The locking in the legs works fine, the legs can stand om their own.

And finally the best part. He stod up an little bit before my home made S-hooks broke. But I am getting closer to my goal. ^^

    14. What an impressive project! Your troll is looking great!

    15. Looking very good, its been a pleasure to watch this come together. You took on quite the project, as unlike a standing bjd in MOST cases you are also doing a most excellent job in working the reality of weight distribution. I really can't wait to see more.

    16. Wow, it's stunnig! I love the face and the feet, they're fascinating, I can't wait to see more of the process.

    17. Well, it looks like I'm up and running again, and have been since january. Much thanks to Aminoff here at The Joint, we are building dolls together some weekends.

      Here are some updates:
I was so sick and tired of he's knee joits so that I put him away for over an year. Now I have redesigned he's knees for the 5th time and now Ifinally getting good results. ihave also started to coat som parts with Gesso as you can see. : )

This pic is from 2 weeks ago he refused to stand up and was falling over. So I have worked with the standing issue mostly. and made the legs longer since he looked stupid. But this is the short legs in the picture. I hope to update with pictures of him standing soon. I managed to stand him up last night but it's just barely so far. :)
And i have also started to fix some wonky missplaced muscles aswell.

    22. Wahaha, I know - of course you will be! XD Same goes for me. ;)

And that is one smexy pic. :D

    23. Wonderful!! I really love him! The angle of his head and neck is great!

    24. Whoa! This is impressive.
I love all kinds of trolls (or big monsters in genereal) and I love your interpretation. It does have a scandinavian look to it.

    25. Thank you lillith! ^^ I 'm glad you do. I think it's time for som monster-like creatures in this hobby :3
Good to hear, I have been woried he is not as nordic as I have thought

      Thank you ghostdollie! : D
I'm very pleased whit the neck and back-parts they are just like I want them.So thats so nice to hear!

    26. I couldn't agree more. You can never get enough monsters, after all. I have some plans for a game-type ork doll for a future project, myself.

    27. Woah,

He's gorgious! He's a little to long for a troll character I would like, but I really love him!!

Troll character from a game: Trundle (the buff one) I hope you'll like him

    28. es yes! ^_^
That sounds like an really cool project. I hope you share it when you start! : )
I have an female troll on my own list so I hope I get around to build her too ^^

Thank you InNoTeb! Really? I think he is to short x)
I don't know who Trundle is, sorry ^^'
I'm more in to nordic trolls from our folklore :)

I made some interesting progress last night with his tail. It's jointed aswell. Not finished yet, but I'd love some feedback on this :) I'm thinking of making an lighter tip for him and maybe just an core and use fur instead.

    29. I like the tail, especially the tuft on the end of it. The piece right before the tuft looks slightly awkward to me, but otherwise very nice and troll-like.

    30. Thanks! :)
I do agree with you on the end part before the tuft, I am considering to re design it.
maybe the ball joint on the end of it is ponitless, I dont know if it's necessary to make it movable. ._.
The best case should be if the tip before the tuft was the thinnest part of the tail.

    31. I love your progress its really great, I think the tail tip is pretty wonderful sculpted

    32. Would you be using wiring in the tail to allow it to hold certain poses?

    33. Excited to see pictures of this guy stalking about the woods. Be sure to post a link. =D

    34. This guy is so cool! >__< I'd love to see more. Love the tail tuft as well :D

    35. Wow. It's super amazing looking at your concept art and watching you create it in doll form. Love the tuft on the tail, and that nose!

    36. Wow wow!!! What an amazing project! I come from Northern Europe as well and we take our trolls very seriously!

This guy is awesome!! And so big! I'd love to see him next to some MSDs, totally in dcale, hehee xD i can't wait to see more updates!! His face is so cute :>

    37. I think your sculpting is impressive :XD beautiful troll :XD I cant wait to see more

    38. Hi Everyone! Wow, so many comments x3 How awesome!
unfortunatly I got an nasty pain in my back from sculpting while sitting on the wrong kind of chair by the wrong kind of table. So I havn't done anything now for an month. But Now I can sitt down again with out pain killers. So I plant to build some more troll dolls soon. yey! x3

Thank you margo! I hope I can build more soon ^^

Ofcours we do!Trolls are VERY important : DUnfortunatly the only MSD i own is an Dollzone MOment, so that might be wierd. x3
I wll update as soon as I am up and running again ^^
He sure is a cutie ;)

Thank you very much! Im glad to har that! I really want the doll to give the same feeling as my art, but it's so hard. @_@
I like the tuft aswell, looks beter that I tought I could build.:3

Thank you Crowtree" ^_^ <3 I promies to build more as soon as I have the time and feel all right again ^^

I'm not sure yet. I guess I will try wiring it,the tale is quite hevy so it would be good. : )

Thank you Glimmer! ^_^<3 I hope I can do some more progress soon!

    39. Great job! You gave yourself quite a project, but it is turning out wonderful. You do some really good work.

    40. This is AMAZING!! I can't wait to see how he comes together as you continue, and I would love to see him cast. How big is he? Can you show a picture of him next to some other dolls?

    41. Even if he has troubles to stand right now, I think he looks awesome! I love the details, specially the hands! :3 (And who would not love that face? <3 )

    42. Thank you Tiirikka! <3
The standig sure is an tricky part, but I'm starting to get it now. ^^
He is handsome is'nt he!? ;)

    43. i love this guy! his feet and tail are awesome! I cannot wait to see him completed.

    44. WHOA! That is insanely good! :love

    45. Thank you! ^_^<3

      Thank you very much ^^
I'm slowly slowly working on him, but I'm always short in time. And my back is always troublesome when I work to much and I'm have to rest it for long. >-< But I will not give up!

I can at least update an bit, This is before I finished the other foots features, it was rough and I did not like the clumsy look on the toes and the shape of the foot. The left one is the finished one:

Also an newer picture, really ugly x3 But I have put down some hard work in making him stand up better, and on the anatomi on the legs, and I still have things to do with them. And I have also had problems with knee joints breaking under the weight so I have had to rebulid them some times =_=
      [IMG]

    46. He is coming along so nicely! The feet looks awesome.

    47. Finally an decent update! ^^
Knee joints are working, he has one mobility joint now, it works and I will do som tiny corections before making the other one..Face plate is working now to, magnets are conecting.

I will do some more work with the right foot and then I will keep on working with the tail since I want to add some parts to make it longer.
And as you gus can se Kirby is very happy about this! :3

The only down side right now is that he wants to tip over the hip joint, and I need to solve this >_<

    49. I cannot even express how awesome I think this is! He is so original and beautifully sculpted!

    50. Well, I'm done! :333

    51. goodness me! he is awesome!
      all the details, ahhhh.

    52. can't believe how beautiful this is! i am a long time world of warcraft player and he reminds me so much of the trolls in that game. they have always been my favorite. what you've done with the articulated tail, the ears, the tense looking hands and feet, and the hunched back.... he's is so gorgeous and unique. this takes a lot of doll making "rules" and shatters them. really inspiring!

    53. Cool sculpt!

    54. He is AMAZING! He looks fabulous! What are your plans after you finish him?

    55. He is so impressive! I'm glad you kept at this project; this just made my morning.

    56. I have to say your art always amazes me. I absolutely love him! :aheartbea He truly is my favourite bjd ever. I hope you're able to cast and sell him one day :)
      Always cheering for you:sumomo:

    57. What a wonderful doll. A pleasure to scrollback through here and see it being made. A serious labor of love!!

    58. This is incredible work! I love trolls! I have a lil troll doll though she's a teeny cutesy childlike troll, not a big ol' wise forest troll.
