Contest Triathlon: Up to Eleven - Winners Announced!

Jul 31, 2015

    1. Welcome to the 2015 DoA Triathlon! This year's theme is Up to Eleven!

      From the Wikipedia article:

Following that definition, our challenges for this year's Triathlon will involve taking ordinary things and pushing them to their limits. We are hoping that your creations and entries will be ridiculously creative and completely over the top!

      What is the Triathlon?

Per Anniversary Triathlon tradition, in August there will be three feats of skill; the first two events will each last one week, the final will last almost two weeks. Votes in these events will count as points, and points will be cumulative. At the end of the the three events, the person with the highest score wins! Please note, you must participate in all 3 events to have a chance at the prize - this is also a feat of endurance!

Each challenge will be posted individually, right when that section is going to begin! If the challenge will require special supplies, we will give notice several days before the challenge is issued. Watch this thread for more information and updates!

      What are the prizes?

      Luts Senior65 Delf Bory
Realskin normal, default face-up and wig (as shown), outfit (not as shown)

Peak's Woods Fairies of Bugs KoonieS
white resin, blank doll, wig and eyes (not as shown) heel feet included

      Aileen Dolls Polymorph Rot
cream white resin, default faceup (as shown), wig, eyes and outfit (not shown)

Please note that it is possible to participate just for fun, without being in the running for first prize. Do not accept the prize if you do not intend to keep it; it is unsportsmanlike to sell the prize after receiving it and anyone found doing this will receive a Marketplace suspension and be barred from future contests. (Obviously, you don't need to decide if you're competing for fun until after we post the prizes.)

Please note that if you won a major prize (a doll or a resin doll part such as a head or body) in a previous anniversary contest, you may not accept another major prize in this contest.

      Who are our Winners?

      [IMG][IMG][IMG]

Our first-place winner with 209 points is Sawa Hawkins, also known as Implingz. Implingz will get first choice of our three prizes!
In second place with 119 points is Bam!, also known as Jenseny. Jenseny will get second choice of our three prizes!

In third place, with 113 points is Princess Buttercup, also known Rikki101. In fourth place with 112 points is Cheese Sandwich, also known as FunnyLori. Both of these entrants won dolls in previous anniversary events, so these entries were just for fun. [IMG]

In fifth place with 88 points is SqueakRubberDuck, also known as PositivelyThrifty! PositivelyThrifty will get our final prize!

      Who Played?

Like in past years, entries will be anonymous and scores will be posted in association with code names. The scoreboard, once we have some points tallied after the first round, will appear below.

    2. Challenge #1: Big Hair

The first challenge in your triathlon quest is big, beautiful hair. We want to see your doll showing off his or her style in a fabulous, over-the-top wig made by you! As usual, there will be three voting categories in which you will be able to earn points. The first category will be voters' favorite, but the other two will not be announced until the wigs are up for voting. So be creative, give your best effort, and be FABULOUS.

You may use any materials that are not normally used for a doll wig. This means that you cannot use human or animal hair, fur (real or synthetic), or plastic fiber (such as saran). CLARIFICATION 8/2: Loose wool and yarn may be used, but nothing that was pre-wefted or is attached to the skin/leather.
You may not just modify an existing wig. CLARIFICATION 8/2: You also may not use a pre-purchased commercial wig cap.

You will need to provide the following photos:

      • One photo of the wig on the doll that shows the full wig, in color. The wig must be shown on a legitimate (non-recast/non-bootleg) on-topic doll or doll head. The modeling doll doesn't need to belong to you, so if you have a friend who will let you borrow a doll for the photo, go for it!
      • One photo showing a detail of the wig that you think is extra special.
      • One artistic photo taken in black and white of the doll wearing the wig; the composition is up to you! This picture MUST be submitted in black and white. If you do not have photo editing software, there are online options such as Pixlr that you can use!

      Entry Details

      GO VOTE!

      Who May Enter?

This contest is open to all members who do not currently have any unresolved transactions or other disciplinary measures in place. Members must have joined the forum before June 25th, 2015.

The contest is also open to all forum staff, though staff may not participate for prizes. If you have won a doll or part of a doll in a past DoA contest, you may enter for fun but you may not participate for prizes.

      Rules

      1. Minimal use of photo editing, please. We want to be impressed by your creation, not your amazing use of Photoshop.

      2. The wig must have been created specifically for this contest, by you.

      3. No posting entries or others photos that are recognizably from the same photo shoot until after judging is closed.

      4. The wigs must be modeled on on-topic dolls.

      Specifications

You may submit one wig only.

Photos must be sent in JPEG format, 600 pixels on the longest side.
Oversized photos or photos sent in the wrong format will be disqualified.

Entries will be accepted from August 5st to 11:00pm EDT August 8th. For those of you who are unaware, the US is on Daylight Saving time. Entries received after this time will be disregarded; if you do not know what time this is where you are, use this link.

Entries will be submitted directly to the moderators using a form that will become available in a few days.
Do not PM armeleia or any of the other moderators with your entry; this form is the only way to enter.

If you are not interested in the top prize, please indicate this on your entry form. Do not accept the prize if you do not intend to keep it; it is unsportsmanlike to sell the prize after receiving it and anyone found doing this will receive a Marketplace suspension and be barred from future contests.

      Voting

Entries will be posted for member voting from August 9th-August 13th. Votes will be submitted and tallied privately through the forum's form feature. The totals will be made available on completion of voting.

Entries will be posted without the entrants' names to try to avoid this being a popularity contest. For this reason, we must stress that identifying your entry to others will lead to disqualification. If you are caught sharing your entry, posting your progress, or soliciting votes off-site, you will be disqualified from the event in its entirety.

We will also be employing the same codename system as last year - pick a good secret identity for this year's contest! You may not use the same code name you used last year.

      Points and Prizes

This is the first task in the quest for the top prizes, to be announced. Please remember that you must complete all three challenges in order to qualify for the prize. You may join for fun at any time, but you can only win if you have participated in all sections.

Members will choose the best entries in three not-yet decided categories - so there will be three ways to earn points! Focus on making a great wig and taking your best photos and you'll be on your way to earning points no matter what categories are chosen! We will also allow members to vote on "just for fun" entries; even if entrants don't want the prize, it's fun to see how they ranked! (And it's a pain keeping straight who is doing what).

The scoreboard will be updated in the opening post at the end of each segment.

    3. Challenge #2: Cool Kicks

The second challenge in your triathlon quest is incredible, detailed shoes using paper products and a limited budget. The definition of "shoes" is fairly open; any style of shoe, sandal, or boot is completely acceptable; practicality is not important. As usual, there will be three voting categories in which you will be able to earn points. The first category will be voters' favorite, but the other two will not be announced until the shoes are up for voting. So be creative, give your best effort, and be FABULOUS.

You may use any type of paper - patterned or plain - that comes in sheet form.
You may use cardboard and cardstock.
You may use all kinds of glue and tape as an adhesive, but not a decorative or structural element. (For example, you couldn't use hot glue to make your soles. Remember, these should be more paper than anything else).
You may not combine the glue and paper to make papier-mache or other "sculpting" materials.
      You may not
use any cloth or thread elements. This also means that you may not wet the paper, sew it into shape, and remove the stitches. We would like to see creative techniques, but please think of the spirit of the challenge and don't try to sneak things in on technicalities.
You may not use paint, pigment, pencil, etc. to add design or color.
You may not put paper over existing shoes; these need to be built from scratch.

Your finished shoes may not cost more than $11 US to make, including your adhesives.
Recycled items (newspapers, used cardboard and paper packaging, etc) do not have a value - they are "free" in your final point value. Any other items must accounted for, even if you did not have to buy them specifically for the challenge. Please look up values for your items or similar - for example, if you use clear tape that was in your desk, look up how much a roll of clear tape would cost and add that to your total. Paper should be priced by the full sheet. For adhesives, you may count only the portion you used, so for example if you used 2 gluesticks out of a package of 10 that cost $1, you would list the item as $.20. Obviously, things like scissors and tools don't count toward your total, only items that become part of the finished shoes.

You will need to provide the following photos:

      • One photo of the shoes on your doll - detail.
      • One photo of the shoes by themselves to prove that they are removeable.
      • One photo of your materials
      • One artistic photo taken in black and white of your doll and the shoes; the composition is up to you! The focus should be the shoes, but you can show them on or off the doll (and you can show as much or as little of the doll as you wish as long as the doll is included). This picture MUST be submitted in black and white. If you do not have photo editing software, there are online options such as Pixlr that you can use!

      2. The shoes must have been created specifically for this contest, by you.

      3. No posting entries or others photos that are recognizably from the same photo shoot until after judging is closed.

      4. The shoes must be modeled on on-topic dolls.

      Specifications

You may submit one pair of shoes only.

Photos must be sent in JPEG format, 600 pixels on the longest side.
Oversized photos or photos sent in the wrong format will be disqualified.

Entries will be accepted from August 12st to 11:00pm DST August 15th. For those of you who are unaware, the US is on Daylight Saving time. Entries received after this time will be disregarded; if you do not know what time this is where you are, use this link.

NEW: Please use an image hosting site other than Flikr. There are more issues with Flikr-hosted images being submitted correctly than any other images. Please use Photobucket or ay of the other free hosting sites! Thanks! :)

      Voting

Entries will be posted for member voting from August 16th-August 20th.

    4. Challenge #3: The Show Stopper

Congratulations! Your doll has just been hired as a model who will be walking the runway for a three-designer show... but oh my, the other designers haven't coordinated at all! It looks like you will have to somehow unify their designs. For the final challenge of the triathlon, you will be creating an outfit based on other contestants' photos.

You will be randomly, secretly sent 6 photos from the previous rounds. You will pick 2 of these photos (one wig, one pair of shoes) as your inspiration! If you participated in Round 2, expect a PM from armeleia with your options! You will not be working with these other contestants - the things you create will be based completely on your interpretation of their photos!

Your job is to create an outfit for your doll that somehow relates to both the wig and the shoes. This might mean that you incorporate the wig material, a pattern or design from the shoes, the style of the wig or shoes (i.e. Rococco, goth-loli, horror), the theme of the wig or shoes, etc.

You may use one of the following groups of materials, based on your chosen photos:
      1. Things you'd find at a hardware store
      2. Things you'd find at a post office
      3. Things you'd find at a florist

No crossing over between categories and no fabric. Think outside the box about what materials each venue can supply you, and how you want to put them together. The outfit may be assembled using any method - sewing, gluing, taping, stapling, etc. (Clarification 8/16: your adhesive/assembly method doesn't need to be from your category - there's no restriction on glues/tapes/threads/etc used for assembly. They can not be used decoratively unless they are from your category). The outfit does not need to be removable.

You may also use one small piece of whatever the wig in your photograph was made with, but this is ornamental and not structural. (Clarification 8/16: This refers to the wig in the photograph you're chosen as inspiration, not the wig that you made.)

You may salvage your materials - so if you have flowers growing in your garden, congratulation! Those are free. You have some packing materials left from when your doll arrived? Great! Free! Anything you have to purchase, however, must be counted. You may not spend more than $11 on materials, so you may also want to consider what you already have on hand when you choose your material category. This is consider on your honor, and armeleia may question you on it if it seems like you're taking advantage.

You will need to provide the following photos:

      1. Your materials
      2. A full-length shot of your outfit from the front
      3. A full-length shot of your outfit from the back
      4. A photo or collage of your favorite details
      5. A collage of the wig you used, the shoes you used, and your outfit. (All black and white. This can just be pasting all three pictures together or it can be an artistic creation; it's up to you. Clarification 8/16 : You can use any pictures from your inspiration entries, but the final collage must be black and white.)

You will also need to provide the title of your outfit and a list of materials with prices.

      2. The outfit must have been created specifically for this contest, by you.

      3. No posting entries or others photos that are recognizably from the same photo shoot until after judging is closed.

      4. The outfit must be modeled on on-topic dolls.

      Specifications

You may submit one outfit only.

Photos must be sent in JPEG format, 600 pixels on the longest side - except the photo for #5, which may be up to 800 pixels on the longest side.
Oversized photos or photos sent in the wrong format will be disqualified.

Entries will be accepted from August 20th to 11:00pm DST August 30th.

Unlike last year, we will also allow members to vote on "just for fun" entries; even if entrants don't want the prize, it's fun to see how they ranked! (And it's a pain keeping straight who is doing what).

    5. Challenge #1 of the triathlon is up!

    6. Yay! Fun! I'm really excited about this! These are such great "prompts" Would wool or yarn be considered animal hair?

    7. Would thread (to tie things together) or lace (to make a headcap to glue things to) count as synthetic or animal fiber? Fairly sure the thread is cotton, which is a plant fiber, but it is thread

    8. Ooh, interesting! So, no budget limits this year? I guess I'll have to self-impose so I don't go overboard :sweat

When it says saran, I'm assuming that means the wig fiber and not the plastic wrap? Is saran wrap/plastic wrap allowed?

    9. Are we allowed to use pre-made things and adapt them into the wig, or does everything have to be from scratch?

Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk

    10. So flipping exciting! Ahhhhhh!!!

    11. This is so exciting!! I have so many thoughts and ideas. I'm glad there seems to be no price limit not because I plan on spending (I plan on using what I have) but it's nice to not have to think about receipts and all that.

    12. The "animal fur" refers more toward mohair (wefted or leather backed) that is often used for conventional wigs. Yarn or loose wool would be fine.

Thread is fine - fibers in general are fine, synthetic fiber refers more to saran/kanekalon fiber, like what conventional wigs are made of. Cloth and thread are fine to use as needed. :)

Saran wrap is completely fine. :)

There is no price limit on this particular challenge, but we ask people to be reasonable.

Ideally you should be scratch-building your wig, so the bulk of it should be from scratch. Embellishments are all right. If you want to stick little toy cars into your wig to make a Mad Max-themed wig, that's fine. :) But the wig shouldn't just be a premade item where you cut a hole in the bottom for the head.

    13. Are vwe able to use alpaca fiber or would that go into animal fur? ^^

    14. so do we not need to include a photo of supplies used this time? or did I miss that part of the post somehow >.>;;

    15. Merino wool would count as loose wool?

    16. May the wig cap be cloth, as for a typical wig?

    17. Very excited to see what everyone will come up with!!! :)

    18. This seems very exciting! Ive never done one of these , perhaps I'll try it . Good luck to all those participating ! C:

    19. To my mind, the funniest and most creative part of this will be the choice of material. Wool and stuff ist quite often used for home made wigs. I already started to think about ridiculous and unusual materials to use.

    20. If it is loose and not connected to the skin, I'd count it in the same category as loose wool. If it is fur on leather, then no, it can't be used.

Since there's no price or material restrictions, it is not necessary to show your supplies. (This will be different in later categories.) :)

I'm not familiar with Merino wool. If it is loose and not connected to the skin, I think it would count as loose.

It may be cloth like a typical wig. The underpinnings of the wig may be a traditional wig material (except the materials specifically off-limits in the rooms), though you may not use a pre-purchased commercial wig cap.

Just as a general reply to questions... there are no limits on what you may use, so remember that creativity counts. These aren't intended as everyday, realistic wigs - we want to see the crazy, exaggerated, theatrical, ridiculous things you can all come up with! :)

    21. Yes merino has no skin on it, it's usually used to do needle felting and I'm not exactly sure it could hold as a wig but I have some and think would be fun to try

    22. I was wondering if feathers could be used in making the wigs?

I'm super excited for this contest!

    23. Also can ribbons be used in making wigs? I'm deciding between two possible ideas and knowing if ribbons can be used will help me decide

    24. I have a questions! The second photo "One photo showing a detail of the wig that you think is extra special" can be a collage of photos or collage of different closeups ?

    25. This. Feathers is something I thought of right off the bat. They are loose so maybe?

    26. So. . . will the contestants be required to use the same doll for all three challenges? Where it might be an advantage to use a larger doll for this round, size might be a disadvantage later. ;)

    27. So we CAN use human/animal hair only if it is loose and not pre-wefted? :sigh

    28. It looks like. But I would be cautious of making a wig from loose fiber that looks like a traditional wig. The spirit of the triathlon is to challenge participants to think outside the box and make something unusual, using materials not normally considered! I would bet that one of the voting categories will award points to the artist utilizing creative materials :D

    29. Does the doll have to stand unsupported with the wig on?

    30. Yeah, I wouldn't want to create the traditional wig anyway :P Just wanted to know in case I get this one idea while planning. And I agree, creative materials will most likely be one of the criteria as always :)

    31. I missed out last year as I noticed after it started and it looks realy fun. I think I might give it a try this year if I can think and make a wig befor the deadline. Time to brain storm and dig through my arts and crafts supplies

    32. I was wondering, how is it fair that you cannot use mohair or any other type of hair on pelt/skin but you may just make a hard-cap wig with alpaca?

I think both types of wig-making are evenly present in the doll-hobby so why exclude the one but not the other?

    33. Were can I ask some more detailed questions about the wig.

    34. I think its because of the "raw" nature of loose fibre Vs. say, fur that is already attached to skin and is only cut in the correct shape (as far as my knowledge goes). I think if the fur/mohair that is loose, that would be okay.
      Mods, can anyone confirm this?

You can do so in the "Ask the Moderators" forum. :) Be a little patient as I'm sure the mods are pretty busy with the Anniversary and the server move, but they'll get back to you in time, don't worry!

    35. I still want to know about this, if anyone can answer?
I believe it would be only one pic and no collage, but it is good to know!

    36. In the past collages have been allowed, but I'd like clarification from a mod on this too.

    37. Yes, the mods are definitely busy! Normally the work they do around here is the equivalent of an unpaid part time job. During anniversary season, it is more like an unpaid full time job. And with behind the scenes activities to get ready for the move, unpaid overtime on top of that. All this on top of the real (paid) jobs they do to pay the bills.

I think we need a mod appreciation thread. But that would be extra work for the mods, so I'll say it here instead: thanks for all you do for our community!

    38. Nope. The doll can be seated or in a stand; it's really not important. :)

Craft fur and leather-backed natural fur are very easy and extremely common; many people do these for themselves or for commission. Allowing conventional methods and materials also gives an advantage to the semi-pro wigmakers on the forum, who could just alter one of their existing patterns. Traditionally, we try to mix it up with triathlon events to get avoid giving advantages to people who make things commercially.

We're allowing a little bit of wiggle room by allowing loose natural fiber, but we would like people to extend themselves a little bit further. We want people to try something new. And to be honest, "fair" isn't really a word that applies here; there are so many choices available for materials (literally anything!) that disallowing one category isn't going to hamstring anyone.

There will be more specific information with the actual form, but yes. A collage would be fine, but you will need to keep the collaged image within the given dimensions. (600px on the longest side.)

Sorry for the delay in responding; I wok full-time and have had a lot of outside responsibilities. :)

    39. @armeleia thanks for the answer! Don't worry about the delay.
I checked the clock but the link is set to 2011, just thought about mentioning it.

    40. Hello! I'm so excited for this year's entrees! I've been looking at past contests, and a question has come up- if there were to be a monetary limit on supplies for one of the following challenges, what would be the ruling on stuff I already have? I have a pretty good collection of craft supplies, so I didn't need to spend any money to make my wig because I already had all the necessary materials.... would I need to price all that as if I had bought it?

I'm asking now so I already have an answer if it comes up :) (I don't want to lose time working on anything waiting, cuz I know you all are super busy!)

      Thanks!

    41. Ellidyr any materials that you already had count as materials that you already had, the only costs you have to add up are things that you purchase specifically for the challenge.

    42. When there is a monetary limit, you will be asked to account for all materials used, not just what you actually had to purchase specifically for the challenge. Generally, we try to go with reasonable guesses for stuff you already had. Like for example, if you've got a wealth of scrapbook paper, we might say "okay, that's usually 10 sheets/$1 at Michaels." Garbage and recyclable materials (packaging, for example) is counted as no cost. There is a certain degree of working within an honor system, but really that's unavoidable in any online contest. And hey, you're all good people; I trust you. :) When we get to a contest section with a monetary limit, there will be specific instructions on how to account for your materials.

(It would be unfair to allow people to use the stuff they already had without accounting for that value - my workbench is so well stocked that I could actual sculpt a doll, make silicone molds, and cast in resin without buying anything at all! Some people just have a lot of great stuff on hand, some of which would be really expensive if they had to buy new to use.)

I will get the form up for photo submissions at some point tonight.

    43. Aw yeah, I am looking forward to this year! I have given myself a challenge, I will complete all three tasks this year! I've tried before and never managed it. It is going to be even more entertaining considering I am, for the first time, employed full-time and am busy to boot!

Already have a raft of ideas for this challenge running through my brain. Going to sit here addressing envelopes debating which idea to run with!

    44. The entry form for part 1 is up, linked in the second post. :)

    45. I would also like to know if we're going to have to use the same doll for all 3 parts, since that will definitely influence what size to make the wig/who to model it on.

    46. I made several unfortunate miscalculations on my wig : ( Hopefully I can get it fixed in time, I still have several steps to go before I'm done!

    47. If we are not allowed to put our photos on the internet how do we submit a url? Do we just make a new account somewhere and not tag them? (Sorry, internet clueless)

    48. I made a photobucket account last year that no one knows of to post them on. you could always use your flickr or other account and make them private when uploading them. but i find getting the url from photobucket is easier than flickr so i used that.

    49. Thank you hallowHawlk :) are you entering this year? I bet you'll be amazing!

    50. Nice theme! I'm on it and dreaming up how big I can make it by the 8th.. It's already too much for my doll of choice to stand or even sit up in.. Gotta double up her wiring for this 'do! ^^

I want to explain how what I'm making really fits to the theme of "taking it to the extreme" compared to my dolly's usual hair.. Ahh, I forgot how tough it gets to not talk about the project all month!! >w<

It can be said, though: taking dolls out in public and photographing is already embarrassing to me, but putting this on her head on top of it all really IS gonna raise that feeling.. Up. To. 11!

Seriously, it's great to be able to participate. Thank you for your time and hard work moderating this big event! And to my fellow competitors, happy crafting! Can't wait to see your entries!!

    51. Thank you!!!!!:D yeah i just submitted my entry i could not resist wigs are so much fun!! are you going too?

    52. Mmmhmmm, although reading all these comments makes me feel as if I need to go even BIGGER lol

    53. Right. Wig idea is on hold. Mainly because the glue gun has disappeared. Will need to look at glue after work tomorrow, however I feel this might make for a rather poor triathlon for me!

    54. I'm getting the feeling mine might not be over the too enough either now, hmmm think some tweaking maybe in order:)

    55. Is it bad that I have to use a hacksaw and a helium filled balloon on mine? ^^;;

(Actually no, I'm just kidding. XDD )

But seriously, Good luck to the contestants and from what I am hearing, I am getting really excited to see what kind of head-gear we are going to be looking at!

    56. Thanks so much mods for all your work on this, what a fantastic theme/prompt! I've always been a little too intimidated to enter or thought I wouldn't be able to pull anything off in the time frame, but I've found having a deadline is actually super exciting and fun!! (I say this on the first challenge and never having entered before, loll:lol:) Anyways, dying to photograph mine this evening and see everyone else's amazing work!!

    57. Kinda wishing I had a working hot glue gun right about now...my wig making is going very slowly...

    58. Good luck you guys cant wait to look at them all!!
I feel the same way having already submitted maybe i should have waited and add more to it... Ehhh!

    59. Ack i am sure my wig just ate a needle i saw it drop in there but i can't find it anymore, lol.
I love how the triathlon makes me think outside the box and makes me much more creative.

    60. Hahaha! These comments made me laugh out loud. I mean, I'm rather self-conscious about my idea too because altough it's so heavy, it's not turning out as big as.. I imagine this prompt is asking it to be.. You guys are funny. Hang in there!
      :sumomo:
Then! I came up with another ridiculous and grand idea I reaaally wanna do.. Ah, but, is there time?!
...Pardon me while I disappear for the whole night into my mad scientist art studio lab cave- ;)
