Triathlon Entry Forms - Part 1! (Wigs)

Aug 5, 2015

    1. Challenge #1: Big Hair

The first challenge in your triathlon quest is big, beautiful hair. We want to see your doll showing off his or her style in a fabulous, over-the-top wig made by you! As usual, there will be three voting categories in which you will be able to earn points. The first category will be voters' favorite, but the other two will not be announced until the wigs are up for voting. So be creative, give your best effort, and be FABULOUS.

You may use any materials that are not normally used for a doll wig. This means that you cannot use human or animal hair, fur (real or synthetic), or plastic fiber (such as saran). CLARIFICATION 8/2: Loose wool and yarn may be used, but nothing that was pre-wefted or is attached to the skin/leather.
You may not just modify an existing wig. CLARIFICATION 8/2: You also may not use a pre-purchased commercial wig cap.

You will need to provide the following photos:

      • One photo of the wig on the doll that shows the full wig, in color. The wig must be shown on a legitimate (non-recast/non-bootleg) on-topic doll or doll head. The modeling doll doesn't need to belong to you, so if you have a friend who will let you borrow a doll for the photo, go for it!
      • One photo showing a detail of the wig that you think is extra special.
      • One artistic photo taken in black and white of the doll wearing the wig; the composition is up to you! This picture MUST be submitted in black and white. If you do not have photo editing software, there are online options such as Pixlr that you can use!

      Your doll model: Company: Withdoll
Sculpt: Withdoll Rachel (basic edition), normal skin.
      Size: mini (42cm tall).

What did you use to make your wig?: Synthetic wool fleece (purple and lilac).
      Golden lurex thread.
Boucle thread mixed with lurex (ivory and golden).
Satin laces to make the flowers (purple, lilac and ivory).
Fabric glue and liquid silicone. Brushes to apply the glue.
Silver metal wire (for the loops).
Nylon fabric to make the inner cap.
Fabric priming to help the braids keep in shape.

Tell us your inspiration for this design!: I decided to make something that would be a challenge, and very different from what I usually have on my dolls. While brainstorming, I got the idea of making a bun updo, with wire loops that would sort-of look like a butterfly's wing... I also decided on make long braids to hang on the loops at different height levels, and make buns on the ends of the braids. The original design (including number of buns and positions of the wire loops) changed three times before I achieved the final look of the wig, which proved to be a challenge to balance correctly on the doll's head.

Tell us your inspiration for this design!: I wanted to try and make something without having to buy anything at all, and try to really think outside the box. so I started thinking about what I might have a lot of around the house, and cassette tapes came to mind because I've seen people make amazing artwork out of cassette tape ribbon before.
for the style of the wig itself, I knew I could curl the tape similar to how you curl plastic curling ribbon; so I decided I wanted to do something sort of curly and vintage inspired because I wanted to take pin-up style photos of the finished wig for the black and white photo required for submission.

What did you use to make your wig?: Yarn, toilet paper rolls, batting, Modge Podge, saran wrap, sewing pins and floss for decoration.

Tell us your inspiration for this design!: I wanted to go big! I used supplies that I had around the house to try to make big lightweight buns. Originally I was going to have three, but I think two turned out better. I started with one side bun, then added the second, and decided not to add a third. I was going to add more color and then decided the pearl white on matte white would be prettier.

What did you use to make your wig?: A bit of denim for the wig cap, quite a few feet of upholstery thread, approximately 10,000 glass beads, and a single pearly button.

Tell us your inspiration for this design!: It began with my excitement at the thought of creating a doll's wig out of non-traditional materials and all of the fun and challenging possibilities within that. Then there was a search around the house for such fitting materials to work with which eventually led to my rather large glass seed bead collection. Once I found them, I was off and running with it.

What did you use to make your wig?: tin foil, masking tape, glitter glue, hot glue, white glue, swarovski teardrop crystals, rhinestones, four sizes and shapes of gold sequins, gold ribbons, green ribbons, 60" long chain, one? jump hoop (should have been two but the second one seems to have disappeared), the wire that connected the chain to the packaging because it was the right size and available.

Tell us your inspiration for this design!: I have always admired the wigs that people have made to solve the problem of not being able to fit a tight fitting hat over a bulkier wig, by creating a hat and then sewing braids to the rim of the hat to give the appearance of a wig under the hat. When the triathlon challenge called for making a wig out of non conventional materials, I decided to make the fanciest possible cap possible under the time allowed, and glued ribbons onto it for hair. This doll actually didn't have a wig until just now, but I think it suits her perfectly.

Tell us your inspiration for this design!: I've been looking at getting my doll a lovely flower crown and wondered how could i take that the an extreme. i was torn between making something with long cascading locks and an updo all in one. but i also likes the idea of a floral crown. so i mixed all my idea with a bigger than life messy up do with a whole bouquet of big beautiful over the top flowers.

Tell us your inspiration for this design!: Pippi Longstocking! I grew up reading about Pippi and seeing her movie and my little girl's freckles made me think of Pippi as an excellent, over the top character on which to base this wig. Pippi's red, curling pigtails alone made for a great wig, but to turn it up to 11 we perched her stalwart horse and pet monkey on top.

Tell us your inspiration for this design!: I was inspired by the elegant but also immense wigs and hairstyles of the Victorian era, mixed with more modern shapes, colour and materials, hence the wire. I also wanted to

What did you use to make your wig?: My wig cap was made from an old shirt of mine and ModPodge. The "hair" of my wig is made from some very soft leftover yarn that I brushed out. I also included some scraps of lace and gold embroidery thread into the hair. I created tiny sculptures using items I raided from my diorama, tiny paper drawings, beads, gears, some fake plant life, florist wire, part of a necklace, sticks, and hot glue.

Tell us your inspiration for this design!: My inspiration is my character Rune, who is the focal point of a story of mine. I tried to incorporate bits from each aspect of my story into her 'do, and it is very heavily inspired by the characters whom interact with and influence her, as well as her own journey. I also wanted to incorporate an Alice in Wonderland vibe to this crazy big hair and take the whimsy to an extreme.

What did you use to make your wig?: Costume Jewelry, charm bracelets, earrings, keyrings, bead chain, craft chain, silicone putty (about 1.5 earplugs worth)

Tools including angle-cutters (to cut the chains to desired lengths), and needlenose pliers to attach all the chains together with jump rings.

Tell us your inspiration for this design!: Her usual hair is natural dreads with a single metallic feather earring and decorative threading. I wanted to try to take the idea of the mettallic feather to the extreme by making her entire dreadlock hairstyle out of metallic jewelry and chains.
I had no idea the hairpiece would get so heavy (as much as 4 cans of Campbells soup?!) so getting the doll to be able to support wearing it was another "extreme" challenge!
