Triathlon Entries - SETS!

Aug 14, 2010

1. Challenge #3: THE BIG SHEBANG
set /sɛt/
n. a construction representing a place or scene in which the action takes place in a stage, motion-picture, or television production.

For the final contest, you will be creating a photo set for your doll.

Your set must include:

• 2 walls
• 1 floor
• 1 piece of furniture
This is considered a minimum. You may have additional walls or furniture if desired.

Your limitations are:

• You must make everything in the set. This means that if there is a vase with flowers, you must have made the vase and the flowers. If there is a book on the table, you must have made the book. Obviously, we don't expect you to weave your own cloth, but you can't use pre-made objects. We also know that some of us have talented husbands or friends - you cannot ask your family or friends to make items for you.
• No power tools. You may only use hand tools. No power tools such as Dremel (or other electronic rotary hand tools) or other common shop tools (jigsaw, drill press, etc.).
• You may only spend $20 on supplies. On the entry form, you will need to itemize the costs of everything that you use for your set. If it is an item that you had already, please estimate a value. If your estimates seem very "off," you may be questioned or disqualified. Please just play fair! "Recyclables" and trash do not need to be itemized, so we recommend using your household's cardboard leftovers, empty (cleaned) cans and bottles, and discarded packaging.
• You must incorporate the material from your wig into your set. This may mean using a bit of your material in the furniture or the walls; it could also be using it in part of a decoration.

Entry Details

Who May Enter?
This contest is open to all members who do not currently have any unresolved transactions or other disciplinary measures in place. Members must have joined the forum before June 25th, 2010.

The contest is also open to all forum staff.

If you did not compete in Challenge #1 and Challenge #2, you may not compete for the big prize. However, you are welcome to join just for fun.

Rules
1. Minimal use of photo editing, please. We want to be impressed by your creation, not your amazing use of Photoshop.

2. The set must have been created specifically for this contest. You may not use pieces that you made before; you can not use furniture items that you purchased.

3. No posting entries or others photos that are recognizably from the same photo shoot until after judging is closed.

4. The set must be shown with an on-topic doll.

Specifications

You will be providing 4 photos:

• A photo of your doll interacting with the set
• A photo of the full set by itself
• A photo showing a detail of the furniture
• A "free" choice picture - you can show your doll in your set again or make a collage of different special details. It is up to you!
For 5 freebie points, you may also submit a sensual black and white photo of your banana in your set.

The first three photos must be in color; Your "free" choice photo may be in black and white if desired.
Photos must be sent in JPEG format, 600 pixels on the longest side. Oversized photos or photos sent in the wrong format will be disqualified.

Entries will be accepted from August 15th to 11:00pm EST August 25th. For those of you who are unaware, the US is on Daylight Saving time. Entries received after this time will be disregarded; if you do not know what time this is where you are, use this link.

Entries will be submitted directly to the moderators using this form!
The entry form is not yet available.
Do not PM Truffle or any of the other moderators with your entry; this form is the only way to enter.

If you are not interested in the top prize, please indicate this on your entry form. Do not accept the prize if you do not intend to keep it; it is unsportsmanlike to sell the prize after receiving it and anyone found doing this will receive a Marketplace suspension and be barred from future contests.

Voting

Entries will be posted for member voting from August 26th-August 30th. Votes will be submitted and tallied privately using a new feature in the forum software. The totals will be made available on completion of voting.

Entries will be posted without the entrants' names to try to avoid this being a popularity contest. For this reason, we must stress that identifying your entry to others will lead to disqualification. NO WATERMARKS OR SIGNATURES.
Points and Prizes
This is the third task in the quest for Senior Delf Regen, listed in the first post. Please remember that you must complete all three challenges in order to qualify for the prize. You may join for fun at any time, but you can only win if you have participated in all sections.

Members will choose the best entries in five not-yet decided categories - so there will be five ways to earn points! Focus on making a great set you'll be on your way to earning points no matter what categories are chosen!

The scoreboard will be updated in the opening post at the end of each segment.

How did your make your set?

I used a mailer box as the base with poster board to cover the walls which I painted with appropriate designs. Shelf paper was used for the floor. Furniture and accessories were made to fit 1/12 scale. Everything I used I had on hand except for the wig material (Zanybandz) and the posterboard. I used the Zanyband as a picture frame and drew the picture myself. Cutting, sawing, painting, drawing, sewing, gluing, taping, crushing, modeling were all involved.

What was your concept?

To create a cat-friendly environment for my Catsy dolls. Everything is cat-related and 1/12 scale.

Set size: 15 1/2x 9 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches

Free Materials: cardboard box, paper towel roll, soda bottle, masking tape and yellow plastic bag that I made my wig from.

Purchased Materials: 1 sheet of printer paper ($0.25), 1 sheet of sketchbook paper ($0.50), less then half a bottle of elmer's white glue ($0.75), about a quarter of a roll of clear packing tape ($1.25), the whole tube of krazy glue ($1.99), colored permanent sharpies ($1.00), silk wine bottle cover for fabric on the chair ($0.99), 1 sheet of black craft foam ($0.79), less than half a bottle each of 8 different colors of acrylic paint ($3.15 total for all colors), less than half a bottle of puffy paint ($0.25)

How did your make your set?

I used a cardboard box with the top and one side cut off for the base of my set. I used black acrylic paint and black craft foam for the "tunnel" that the train sits in. I painted the floor of the train dark brown, the walls inside the train light brown, the door inside the train metallic silver. I used a sheet of sketchbook paper for the walls outside of the train. I painted the floor of the train platform dark blue and sanded it with sand paper to give it a worn out look. I cut a rectangle in the middle of the floor of the set to make it look like the gap between the train and the platform and I glued a piece of black foam underneath my set to make the gap look dark and deep. I used a piece of yellow bag for the "caution" line in front of the gap. I took printed paper and rolled in into a straw-like tube painted it silver and covered it with clear packing tape to make it look shiny then krazy glued them to the floor of the train. I made the seats inside the train out of cardboard, masking tape, orange acrylic paint and pieces of the yellow plastic bag then krazy glued them to the inside of the train. I also made advertisements out of printer paper and colored markers and glued them inside of the train and outside in the station area. I used elmers glue to glue them to the walls. I also cut apiece of paper into the shape of a mouse, colored it grey and glued it to the floor on the station platform. I made a garbage can out of part of a paper towel roll and painted it dark green, wrote the word trash on it and filled it with scraps from other parts of my set for the actual "garbage". I used the top and side of the cardboard box to build the train. I cut out the windows with a pocket knife and used clear packing tape for the glass parts. I painted the train car metallic silver and glued it to the sides and back of the base with crazy glue. I cut out the front train door and glued it to the inside of the train to make it look like it was halfway opened. I used crimson colored acrylic paint to make the bloodstain on the train floor. I also made the little knife with craft foam, silver metallic paint and crimson paint. I made the police tape in the free choice photo from part of the plastic bag that I used in the wig contest. I made the chair from some cardboard, black paint and a cut up wine bottle cover and krazy glued the pieces together. I made the money cup from part of a plastic bottle and used clear tape to hold it together. I used printed paper and colored permanent markers to make the little dollar bills. I made his little sign out of sketchbook paper, shaped scissors and markers. I used black permanent marker, black, orange and red paint for the graffiti on the sides of the train. The number 6 is not supposed to be a specific train, but the number for the 6th anniversary of DoA. And the banana I used was a baby banana, not a full sized one :)

What was your concept?

My concept was to make a subway station scene, where the doll acted as a break dancer looking to make some money. The free choice and banana photos were supposed to be a crime scene....The banana is the suspect XD

paper $0.30 (at 10c a sheet)
a banana $1.00
cloth $2.50

the end of a masking tape roll $2.00
wire $3.00
blue tac $1.00
thread $0.20
tapestry needles $3.00
total = 18.00 AUD (16.10 USD)

How did your make your set?

I decorated a shoebox with chalk, stuck the back and the lid together at right angles to make the walls, and put paper down for the floor. The stage I made using cardboard balanced on an earring box and a banana (they were the right shape and size!) covered in cloth. The table's made out of cardboard and the end of a masking tape roll. The chairs are made out of paper and masking tape (the paper's folded into origami cubes).

What was your concept?

I have a wig that always reminds me of the cabaret singer Wanda Lamour, Lady Penelope's alias in the Thunderbirds episode The Cham Cham. So when I was thinking of what to make, my first thought was 'cabaret club'. And smallish bananas happen to be the right shape and size for little cabaret stages for pukis, and I had one there, so... it all fitted together.

All together: €12,87 = ~$16,36

How did your make your set?

The furniture was made out of air-drying clay, then painted and glossed. The ladybug chairs additionally use silver packaging tape. The walls were made out of several layers of cardboard, then papered with wallpaper and painted. The artwork for the books, pencil box and game box was made by me in PSP7 and printed out. The books, game box, pencil box and cookie bag were folded out of paper. The cookies were made out of clay, then painted. The blackboard is sandpaper, framed by painted cardboard. The airvents and sockets are printed out photos. The two ladybug pillows are made out of my wig material plus black fabric scraps. The decorative sun and ladybug are painted and glossed clay.

What was your concept?

My set is supposed to be a playroom in a kindergarden, with all the chaos that usually brings!

Free Materials: Rocks, wood (old firewood we cut, not bought), leaves, small branches, water, cardboard.

Purchased Materials: Furniture foam (50% of a $2 block=$1), Pillow ($2), Paint (50% each from three $3 bottles=$4.50), Glitter ($2), Cups ($2), Hot glue (50% of a $3 bag=$1.50), Ribbon scraps leftover from wig ($1)

How did your make your set?

I began with the cardboard walls and floor, painting the walls black and the floor piece of cardboard standing in as a way to keep the leaves and such off my floor; on top of the "floor" piece of cardboard, I put down the pillow's stuffing to give the set some more variance in floor height. I then ran a small trail of dirt along the bottom of where I planned to place the river. To make the riverbed, I cut the lips and bottom ends off of several plastic cups and hot glued them together to form a watertight seal. The wood was then glued to the card board and the stuffing moved around them, and rocks were placed in key areas before I began to scatter all kinds of different leaves over the stuffing. More rocks were placed and I then created the small mushrooms that litter the set as well as the furniture piece, the mushroom chair. each was made in basically the same way: with scissors, shave away small parts of the furniture foam, creating a desirable shape for both the stem and the top. Then with fabric from the deconstructed pillow, I covered each of the mushrooms and secured with hot glue. The chair's only difference was that I also cut out a small area for the doll to sit in. The "trees" were then painted with orange glow-in-the-dark blacklight-reactive paint, to give the set a kind of eerie feeling when exposed to a blacklight, which also made the ribbon scraps glow a beautiful blue-purple color. After filling the "river" with a mix of water, white glow-in-the-dark paint and glitter, I placed a few reddish-colored leaves in a trail leading toward the throne's dais and dusted the whole set with glitter.

What was your concept?

My concept again played off of my doll's existing persona, a fairy, so I created a forest for her to rule over, where she would be the Queen of her small fairy glade. My incorporation of the wig drew inspiration from James Cameron's Avatar, similar to the tree Eywa. Overall, I wanted the set to have a slightly ethereal feeling but still be natural.

How did your make your set?

I used rolled up news paper held together with masking tape as walls and then drapped my cloth over to make it look more like wall paper.

I used a dark cloth for the floor and put sewed together sushi mats over the top. (couldn't sew all 4 because if the way the wood of the mats lay).

The futon i nailed together from old wood and sewed a futon mattress and throw over and some little pillows and plush toys.

What was your concept?

Asian style deco with the sushi mats and the futon with a steampunk twist and feel.

How did your make your set?

I made a box out of cardboard covered with white printer paper sheets; drew and cut out some trees, made leafage out of the steel wool from the Wig Challenge, glued the trees into the set; built the front from cardboard attaching a curtain made from striped tissue paper. Made a simple table from another piece of cardboard reinforcing the legs with wire. Basically, I built a theatrical stage set maquette as a toy for a larger doll to interact with.

How did your make your set?

I took a couple of card board boxes a painted one for the back drop, the other I cut up and pained to make scenery, leaves, flowers and a trellis. I made a fainting couch, from wood; I cut it out with a hand saw, and use my grandfather’s old hand crank drill to make holes for the screws. I cut up a dowel for lags, and then apostered the whole thing. I hand saw a dust ruffle and a tacked it with tacks, and then glued on the black trim. I made the theater props to go with the scene, the donkey head, is made out of bowning for the strucker and fabric for the skin, the fan is made out of peacock feathers, and the flower crown is made out of fabric.

What was your concept?

My “set” is the stage of a theater putting on a performance of A Midsummer’s Night Dream.

I wanted to make something on the tiny scale, so I went with a gingerbread house theme and made everything out of candy or the wrappers they come in. My dolls are all fairies and I thought that fairies would definitely live in a house so sweet!

I taped together the walls and floor out of cardboard with masking tape, then glued the srapbooking paper on the walls and the sand down on the floor. The 'furniture' was made with more cardboard, newspaper and tape then painted. The fabric and lace remnants over cardboard with some beading made up the sign and I made the chain-link by wrapping the floral wire around a crochet hook, cutting rings and linking them with jewelry pliers. I cut up a big garbage bag to make several smaller ones filled with newspaper and littered the ground with shredded newspaper, foil candy wrappers and broken glass.

What was your concept?

Watch Parts ($2.99)
Wire ($2.00ish <this was bought years ago so I don't remember how much it originally was but I only used a few inches of it in the set)

How did your make your set?

I cut out cardboard for both the floor and walls. The walls were painted green, the floor black. I painted the wood parts white and took the square pieces to the floor to create the checkerboard, and stood the longer pieces up to create the fence. Ribbon was strung from the posts to create the streamers on the fence. Pieces of weed and flowers from outside were glued to create more of an outdoor feel. The trees are made from paper packing material scrunched up then painted over with very very watered down brown paint. Leaves from outside were glued onto them for the tops. The tape was made from four cardboard table legs and a longer piece of cardboard. The chair is made from a long piece of cardboard glued to a plastic bottle. They were both covered with a remnant scrap of red fabric (the remainder was stuffed into the chair). White ribbon was glued to the back of the chair and looped continuously to create the frill. The cupcakes are pieces of white modeling clay with colored pieces put over them. Mini pom poms were put on them to mimic berries. The bottom was painted grey to mimic a cupcake holder. The cakes were done in a similar way. The cups were modeled trying to use different shapes. The plates were made from a rolled out piece of black modeling clay spun back up. All the pieces were then painted with black/white paint for various designs. The cookies were white modeling clay with a "peanut butter" cookie design painted with a brown/white paint. The mugs were made from copper wire glued one on top of the other. The handle is a pocket watch piece. The broken watch is a watch piece with other pieces glued to it. The tablecloth is simply a piece of white remnant fabric draped over the table.

How did your make your set?

The floor mats are made out of cardstock, taped into 11"x22" mats. I painted them, then applied masking tape (colored with permanent marker) on the edges. Then they were all taped together for form the floor.

The walls made from old moving boxes, which I painted. The "wood" detail is strips of wood grain contact paper. The two walls are taped together at the corner so they can stand on their own.

The bed is made out of a rectangle of muslin, sewn and stuffed. The sheet is another rectangle of muslin, hemmed. The pillow is a leftover strip of muslin, rolled into shape and sewn shut.

The dresser is made out of cardboard shipping boxes. I cut the flap off of one box off and used that as the dividing shelf. I used the flaps and sides from the other box, and masking tape, to make the drawers and doors. It is covered with wood grain contact paper. I used scotch tape to secure some of the edges that wouldn't stick to the box. To make the handles on the doors, I made shallow boxes out of masking tape and colored them with permanent marker. The pulls on the drawers are made out of jewelry wire and glass beads, superglued to the drawers. The "clothes" in the dresser are just scraps from a scrap bag.

The lantern is made from leftover scraps of cardstock, and the black details were done with permanent marker. The four sides are masking taped together.

What was your concept?

The concept for the set is a traditional Japanese bedroom.

- Foam core board - $1.50
- Dollar store "fans" from air fresheners - $1.00

- Various junk screws - $0.50
- Clock from second hand store (taken apart and modified)- $ 0.75

Total = $19.10

How did your make your set?

First I made the base "room" from cardboard and covered the floor with fabric. I then cut out the holes for the windows and painted the walls.

I used clay to hand sculpt the tree and window frames, and painted them as well as the painted tree branches on the left hand wall.

I added some details with foam core to stand out from the walls and used hot glue to add designs to the pieces. I also added some "fans" from the dollar store I took off of some air fresheners.

I added the "curtains" then and the window "glass" (a clear plastic bag which was painted to have panes).

I have a couple of additional detail shots of the tree and "fans" here - http://tinyurl.com/26ch94k

I found a small clock at a second hand store and took it apart to I could make my own clock and cut a hole to stick it into the wall near the tree.

I used some piping left over from making window screens and painted it then I inserted small pieces into the wall at various places.

I draped some of my remaining fabric around the upper edge of the set and then I started on my furniture.

I took some left over card board and cut out the frame for a chair. Then I found an old paper bag and crumpled it up after cutting it to be a leaf shape. I hot glued it around the chair frame and added some wire for stability and design. I then painted the whole thing and added a seat "cushion" with some left over fabric scraps.

I took three plastic cups, cut them up and glued them together, and painted them to make the vase for the feathers which I got from my mother who has a pet peacock.

What was your concept?

I wanted to make a set that was steam punk inspired with gears and also I love trees, so I had to put one in there. I wanted the colors to be neutral so that I can use the set for various dolls and outfits and still have it match.

ps : prices are converted from Indonesian rupiah. ^^;;; things in here are a lot cheaper compared to other countries. ^^;; some of these items i got from places that didn't need them anymore... >.> including foamboards and wrapping papers.

How did your make your set?

first i created the walls using cardboards. i connected them using masking tape, then wrapped them in pink and brown wrapping papers (with masking tape as well).

second, i made the floor. ^^;; i cut squares off the brochures and free advertisement magazines and posters i found around the house (which were tons!), then paste them into each other to form patterns (using glue).

third, i made the sofa using cardboards, filled it with dacron, and wrapped it in clothes (checkered + brown). i used pins to keep the pieces together. >.< then i made the small pillows using the checkered scraps and some dacron... sew them together like making a regular pillow. >.>

fourth, i created the bed using 2 soom super gem boxes tied together (with masking tape!). i put some dacron on top before wrapping it with brown cloth (sewn together to form a big size). i used pins to keep some of the cloth in place. i made the pillow the same way as the small ones on the sofa. ^^ and i made a bigger one using the orange scrap of cloth.

fifth, i made the bookshelves using foamboards and wrapping papers. i used glue and pins to keep the pieces together and to hang them on the wall.

sixth, i made the wall-hangings from scraps of batik cloths~ ^^ and the back of posters (the white area). i used glue to tape them to the walls.

seventh, i made the clock using a trashed dvdrom (error written) TAT... i used a piece of brown scrap cloth for the background, and cuts from posters for the clock fingers.

eight, i made the books from foamboards and magazine pages. ^^

ninth, i created the small table (next to the sofa) using a cylinder cd case wrapped in brown cloth~ i made a small handkerchief from the checkered cloth for the top...

tenth, i created the lamp next to the sofa using a poster (wrapped in masking tape to form a long sturdy stick) + a cylinder cd case (the top formed the lamp and the bottom formed the lamp foot... the poster in the middle) + remaining wrapping papers + glue. ^^;;

eleventh, i made the small table next to the bed using a cylinder cd case and the remains of wrapping papers. i covered the top with masking tape. (_ _)

lastly, i put the remaining checkered scrap next to the bed for accessory~ >.> oh, and cut a few pieces of newspapers to form a miniature newspapers...

i hope i haven't left anything behind! TAT

Purchased Materials: 3 Foamcore sheet from Staples ($4.79 each- buy two get one free, - 20% coupon= $9.59), Balsa wood (1.5 sheets at $2.78= 4.17), marbles (20 for $1, used 11=$.55), electrical tape (part of roommate's tool set, free), bouncy ball ($.25), paint (tiny amounts from watercolor tubes, price too small to calculate), felt ($2.00), finger puppet from arcade (30 tickets so... twenty-five cents?)

How did your make your set?

The walls are three pieces of foamcore that came with the color, I work at a Staples so I know when things are on sale. The bean bag chair was made out of a work issued shirt for a job my roommate no longer works at. The shirt was already cut for use for a quilt. The table and matching chair are used containers for a Gatorade powdered drink mix, with the table top being made from that clear CD that protects the blanks you buy. The pool table was made from a couple of cardboard boxes with black felt glued to the top and a cut paper bag on the four sides. The wood part of the pool table is balsa wood that was measured and cut. All cutting happened with an XActo knife. Things are held together with a mixture of masking tape, electrical tape, glue, and hot glue.

What was your concept?

My first idea had been to make a bathroom, but I questioned if it was appropriate to do so, and a toilet is not a piece of furniture. All men should have a cave of manliness. Since my doll falls victim to the curse of "It's a doll so it must be a girl. And look how pretty it is" he had to have a macho room. What could be better than a game room complete with a pool table?

totalling $18.92
everything except the cardstock and the papermache circle I had on hand and is therefore estimated.

How did your make your set?

The walls and floor are two separate pieces, to allow interchanging with future sets. The furniture is constructed from cardboard tube sections "upholstered" with ultrasuede and yarn. The shag rug was made by sewing snippets (1086 of them!) onto a scrap of fabric.

What was your concept?

I've been meaning to make this style furniture for my kitties for oh, about a year now.

Large wallpaper sample book, clearance bin $1
damaged wallpaper roll end $1 (free in a scrap box)
upholstery sample swatch $1
fake fur clearance $2
sculpy $1.19
bead .75
clearance ribbons $1.79

1 roll of packing tape $1
hot glue sticks (already had the gun) $1
ribbon scraps $2
gold acrylic paint $1

How did your make your set?

I found an old poster carrier (2 large peices of cardboard) and cut it in half for a base. I added the wall with the door using boxes from our recent move. I broke my tile parts to make workable pieces. I wallpapered my walls and created a window with layered wallpaper samples. I made the door with more wall paper samples. I used rolled up samples to make my curtain rod and matching samples to make my hooks. I glued the marbles to the ends of the rod for decorative flare. I used the ribbon I had left from the wig making for hippy curtains. I found an old upholstery swatch for the settee covering. I had some ribbon scraps that made it fun and vibrant. I found some left over sculpy and made some claw feet that I painted with gold acrylic paint. I had fabric samples from the wallpaper book that I used to cover my cardboard ottoman. I found a cute bead that sort of matched the settee ribbon and used it as a clasp on the lid of the ottoman. The faux fur carpet, I just had to cut my peice of fur.
Through all of this, I used hotglue, elmers glue, a pair of scissors and an exacto knife.

What was your concept?

Old sitting room. Something soft but fun. It's a room I would enjoy hanging out in ^_^

Free Materials: Cardboard boxes, Cardboard tubes, Sticks from my yard, Paper grocery bags

Purchased Materials: Paper clay (1/6 of $6 package= $1), 2 Pieces Japanese paper ($1.50/sheet= $3), 1 Sheet Bristol board ($2), Acrylic paints (small amounts from various tubes $4), Paper towels ($2), 1 Teabag ($0.50), 8x8inch Piece of scrap fabric ($2), Hot glue ($2), Elmer's glue (%30 of a regular size bottle= $1), Scraps of wire ($0.50), 4 ft of Gaffer's tape ($2)

How did your make your set?

I stained the Japanese paper with tea and stamped on the pattern with a stamp and acrylic paint. I glued the paper to pieces of cardboard to make the walls. I then painted strips of bristol board and stamped on a pattern and glued this down to make the wall trim. For the floor, I sculpted raised floor boards with paper clay where the trees 'break through' and painted it. I taped around the edges with gaffer's tape. The trees are made from cardboard tubes and crumpled paper bags that are wrapped in paper towels with sticks glued to them. Detail is painted on the trees. The chandelier is made from sticks glued together and wrapped with bits of wire. The candles are made from scrap wire and paper clay. The chair is made from sticks glued to a piece of cardboard padded with paper towels and wrapped in fabric to make a seat.

What was your concept?

I wanted to make a set that was both creepy and elegant.

Total: 1393 yen = $16.52

How did your make your set?

I glued and skewered a lot of sponges together and then cut away at them to make a shape. I painted them blue. The corals were made in various ways. Some are cut out painted styrofoam and some are thread that's been glued into shapes. Others are just rolled scrap paper. Then I glued them all to the sponge beast.
The walls and floor are just card board. I wanted to make them fancier, but I ran out of time. I glue strips of plastic bags to make it look a little nicer.

How did your make your set?

I explain many things of how I've made my set during those days in the Triathalon special blog. I had never done anything like this before, I don't like specially the last challenge, and I can't work in a same thing for long hours, so I looked for a happy way to hide my imperfections.
Lucky I'm a person who keeps many things that should be thrown away, but I keep it because I find cute. You never know when you could use them!! So I have no real problem to find "objects" at home –under my bed, into my wardrobe…- that suits the idea I had of my set. Finally I have a good time working on it!

What was your concept?

Cause I chose my Chibi Unoa for the scene I must to build, I decided to prepare a room for her. It must be sweet, colourful, girlish and modern at same time.
She's indeed a crazy but sweet girl, and loves strange things. So I want that the room looks like whatever you could find on an Ikea catalogue but with a little bit of weird point.
Best of all its weird point is that the furniture is aromatic and can be eaten!

Set size: Length 111cm, Width 60cm, Height 75cm

Free Materials: -Big white piece of foam core board(the walls): took from trash, they were part of the set of a clothes show window. They had prints of the brand but I used them reversed-
-Coffee paper: this is the material of my wig.
-Broken tiles: I collected them from the river bank.
-White cement: I used this to stick the tiles of the floor, my street is on building works, I asked the workers to lend me a bit of the cement they use to stick the tiles on the walls. They were so kind!
-Tuna empty cans: These are for the TV set, I washed them and applied my own mixture of dirty rust.
-Old router thing: Broken. It was ready to go to the trash but I had the brilliant idea to include it as part of my TV set. Same with the wires.
-Coffee: I used the dregs of my mother's daily coffee to add it to my dirty mixture. The dregs were collected and mixed with the used tea bags to make a kind of irregular sepia paint to paint with.
-Brown cardboard and bubblewrap: A friend of mine had his brother moving so that means loads of free cardboard and bubblewrap from furmiture! I used this to make the sofa core and padding.
-Dust and earth: For the floor, walls, etc. Picked from the park's floor.
-Iron legs: I cannibalized them from an old piece of furniture that was going right to the trash (yup, summer cleaning fever) for the TV set, I had them around home, they are quite old.
-Masking Tape: to assemble the walls...

Purchased Materials: -White Glue (0,10$): since it was the powder kind you mix with water. The bag was 5$, I used like 1 big spoon... I used this to glue the paper to the walls, and make mixtures for dirt and blood.
-Mixture for fake blood (around 0,30$?): ok, there is a huge amount of things I mixed up here, so there's no way I can calculate a pinch of rice powder colorant when the package was almost 1/2 kilo, or a single drop of a full bottle of soap dish. Same with the rest of things I used, so I put that just in case...because I tried to calculate this and there was things like 0,01$ and... well, that's not very logical.
Turtle carrying case (2,5$): This is the TV. I bought it on a dollar store.
-Silver Spray (1$): I used it to paint the TV set and the tuna cans. It was 2,5$ but I only used a little.
-syntethic leather sampler (5$): my mother used to work as window dresser so she had loads of big samplers this kind of fabrics. I didn't know where to put this because the samplers are free... but just in case.

Total should be around 8$ or 9$

How did your make your set?

I just can't remember, I went mad painting and splashing everything with my dirty and bloody mixtures. First I made the walls, glueing the coffee paper and splashing it like crazy. Then I built the floor sticking the tiles with the white cement the building workers lent me. I made the sofa with cardboard core and bubblewrap padding.
The TV set is painted first with silver spray and then rusted with a mixture of the mixtures of dirt and fake blood plus white glue to stick.
This doesn't have any mystery... I just WENT MAD like if I were the murderer.

What was your concept?

The crime scene of a murder in an abandoned house. I wanted this to look like the most scariest scene of a horror game. I'm not such a fan of gore but... when horror calls, you have to listen to it ;)
About the furniture... I know I made a sofa, but is the TV set what I really want to show. I searched up on Wikipedia and it says a TV set is furniture indeed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_furniture_types
So I went to it :)

About the banana pic... well... weird fetish is the key. I thought the fact for a banana to be sexy was rather weird too...And I swear the banana IS in the pic.

i created an obilisque from a cardboard box covered in masking tape, and hand drew the heiroglyphics. I made the chair, pots, bones and skull from fimo clay.

All the Red Fabric (on the bed, dress, and couch) came from a garage sale shirt- $1.50
Blue and Black Fabric (pillow and couch blanket), half a garage sale skirt I got for $2.

Black polyster material on bed and vanity chair(owned already)- about 6 or 7 inches from a yard that cost $1.95 (from fabric.com, bought a while ago). So 1.95/37 inches (that's how big fabric.com yards are)X 7 inches= $0.37
Cream Satin Material- Walmart remnant (previously bought, used 6 inches of $2.44 for 2 yards) $.20

Black rug near vanity- $0.50 swatch
Cotton puff (owned already)- $0.01
Pastel- used less then a gram(owned already)- $0.05
Paper- two sheets of a already bought pack. $0.10
Knobs for vanity and dresser(owned already)- $0.10 each used 8 so $0.80

Thread- $1 (dollar store set of thread about 20 for $1)
Hot glue- $1 for a bag of 20 mini sticks

Total $18.87

I have more calculations on how I factored everything if you like. :) They were kinda messy, and I figured I rambled on long enough. I did add a few calculations, but didn't add all of them to this posting, but they are written down if they are needed. I know the bolding wouldn't work, but I figured it might be a bit easier to pick out the price that way, anything not in bold tags is part of calculations not added to the price. I apologize if it doesn't.

How did your make your set?

I grabbed some cardboard boxes from my garage and laid down the floor and walls, attached by hot glue and some masking tape, and then painted them.

Used exacto knife to cut out the two windows. Along with cutting all the other cardboard to make the bed and everything else. I used a measuring tape to get the right measurements, and cut out the shapes, and then glued them together.

The bed is made of four small sides of cardboard, with a cardboard base glued on top. The stuffing is actually some plastic bags. I taped the ruffles around the edges of the bed so I could use them again later if I wanted too. Laid the cloth on top, and quickly sewed a few pillows to top it off. The headboard is carved cardboard, topped of with some paper, which was splashed gently with paint water to kind of get a creme texture.

Dresser is cardboard, covered with masking tape to give more texture, and then painted. I put cubbies in by carving holes, and putting a front in back. Drawers are fake, and are just more cardboard, with beads for knobs.

Couch is just like the bed, and I just tossed some fabric over it, because I want to re-use the fabric. I made the pillow and blanket by hand. The blanket is just a chunk of the skirt with the lace sewn on.

Vanity is made of cardboard. I first made it like a table, by folding the cardboard in thirds, and then gluing a flat piece on top, and then carved out a square. The mirror is just a circular piece of cardboard with aluminum foil glued on. The little box is just some tiny pieces of cardboard glued together. Everything else on the dresser was just random stuff I threw together out of some knock off playdough stuff I got at a dollar store. It's supposed to be vases and make-up. The little cotton puff and pink stuff is supposed to be blush. XD

Coffee table is just some cardboard glued together. Magazines are Time, Vogue, Modern Bride and Cosmo (just a few magazines I could name off the top of my head). And are just paper, and doodled on by me. Mug and food are dollar store clay (and the mug was a pain in the butt to make >_<)
The shawl on the coffee table is just a piece I cut out from a horribly stained poncho I got at a garage sale, there wasn't much to salvage ( I got maybe a few other pieces from it I can use).

Coat Rack is just a cardboard base, with a twig glued on it, with smaller pieces of twig glued on to look like racks. Hanging on them is a hat made from some remnant fabric. And a scarf made from my wig material

Bedside table is just the bottom half of a water bottle with a cardboard base for support with a piece of fabric tossed over it. The same goes for the vanity chair, expect I glued and taped the fabric on, and tossed a tiny bit of plastic bag in to cushion it.

Lamp is made from a cardboard base, wrapped in masking tape so I wouldn't have to paint it :P, with two twigs for support. And the shade is a plastic water bottle top, covered in masking tape, so that the paint would stick.

Curtains are just pieces of lace.

Rug is just a folded over piece of fabric, with a cardboard floor underneath.

Paintings are just pieces of cardboard, painted with a tiny bit of paint I had buried in my closet. I just painted whatever came to mind (I'm not very good). They are held on by masking tape.

My doll's clothes are made from some cloth I got at Walmart. The black was really hard to sew, and kept ripping, so I couldn't cut it to the shape I wanted, and instead used ribbon to shape the fabric to look like undergarments. And the robe is just two pieces of fabric sewn together, with holes for the arms.

The little flower above the bed is my wig material also.

In this project hot glue and cardboard were my best friends. I can't think of much else to explain....But I'm proud to say that I didn't cut myself once with my exacto knife, and I walked away with only a few burns from the hot glue...though my poor desk did have a causality. XD I had fun though, thanks for running the contest. :)

What was your concept?

I kinda wanted something I could use again. So I just made my girl a bedroom. It was supposed to be simple. And she was supposed to be getting ready for a date.

How did your make your set?

I went shopping for clearance and cheap, clipping a lot of coupons and spacing my shopping trips as I needed them so I could get around those '1 per customer per day' rules. There are a lot of sales and good prices to be found if you're willing to make due rather than get exactly what you want. I spent right up to my budget though!

Floor: I got a sheet of plywood and stained it with the cheapest stain I could find. Then I drew lines using black and brown colored pencil. To finish, I used wood varnish to make it shiny.

Walls and attached furniture: the walls were built out of several layers of cardboard. The bookshelves and builtin cabinet were made out of cardboard boxes too. After the basic shapes were in, I covered everything in chipboard (smooth, cheap cardboard like the back of a notebook) and painted it. The window seat has a chunk of styrofoam in it to give support so a doll can sit on it. The cushion is packing foam wrapped in fabric scrap. I stained wood trim and a sheet of craft wood for the wall trim and then glued it on.

Windows: the windows and cabinet door are pieces of foamcore backed with sheets of plastic from the box that my window blinds came in.

Books: The books are pieces of foamcore or cardboard wrapped in scraps of scrapbooking paper.

Couch: the couch is foamcore and cardboard covered in scraps of remnant fabric. There is a little bit of polyfill to soften the lines and stuff the pillows. The bottom cushion is foam wrapped in fabric. It's no sewing, all glue. The legs are stained craftwood pieces.

I also made other props using paper, my wig material, cardboard, and foamcore. There is a butterfly collection made from a jewelry gift box and the same clear plastic as the windows.

What was your concept?

It isn't the young professors first house, but this is the one he hopes to keep. He can imagine what it will look like once he's repainted the walls and stripped the thick white paint the previous owners put over the built in bookshelves and cabinetry. He didn't understand why people did that, ruining beautiful old wood like that. He wants the study to be worthy of his books and the things he collects; the unpacking is going slowly, but he's determined to make progress. He wants it to look like it's his house, rather than someone else's house with his things in it. It'll happen, but it'll take time. Moving is hell.

How did your make your set?

I created the shape of the room with a large cardboard box and then used the leftover parts of the box to make the steps. I used lots of masking tape to create a wallpaper effect on the walls. I then cut strips of masking tape and stuck them on the floor leaving gaps so they would look like floorboards.
I made the trunk out of a margarine tub, covered it in masking tape and packing paper and used paper fasteners to look like the bolts.
The chairs are made out of cardboard boxes with organza wrapped around and tied with a ribbon.
I made the teddybear with a little fur fabric and used buttons for the eyes and nose.

How did your make your set?

The steps were created with the sugar cubes. The walls, ceilings, and floors were made with cardboard. I constructed the stairs first to see if it was actually feasible, which it was. After that I built the walls around the stairs in layers so it would have the depth of the original image. I added in hand drawn backgrounds and painted some of the walls. The puki dolls used in the set all but refused to interact with it when everything was white, so color was needed. I made little painter’s outfits for them out of an old shirt…their wigs were constructed out play wigs. The rails on the stairs are toothpicks and the banisters are recycled straws. The painter’s table is made from the inside of a child’s juice box, brushed with silver paint to look like stainless steel. Other small items like the paint buckets and vase are made of Sculpey. Finally, the doors are hand drawn and placed in their respective frames. This image is NOT photoshopped. The Pukipuki dolls had small drops of hot glue put on their feet to affix them when necessary.

What was your concept?

My inspiration for this piece is M.C. Escher’s ‘Relativity,’ the picture with everyone going up and down different staircases. Throughout the competition, I’ve thought a lot about collectors’ views on Asian Ball Jointed Dolls and how varied the points of view are. It’s all relative. It’s very much like the people walking in the original piece…some may be going one way, and someone else, another. We all love our dolls, but we enjoy our hobbies in different way and with a varying sense of what is aesthetically pleasing. That and I wanted to see if ‘Relativity’ could be replicated in a new way. At first I wanted it to look JUST like Escher’s image, but the Puki dolls wanted color so I came up with the concept that they were painting their own set and truly making it their own.

The only items that were purchased were foam core boards and craft sticks. All other items came from my stash of craft items.

How did your make your set?

I made the chair first by cutting and gluing two cartons together. I attached the legs and painted, then covered with fabric. Did the same for thee table. The foam boards are the walls - spray painted and then decorated with tape, then window cut out and picture (my own) taped to back

What was your concept?

It's inspired by mid-eighteenth - early nineteenth century rooms. I used pictures form colonial Williamsburg and the BBC version of Pride and Predjudice as inspiration/references.

How did your make your set?

Walls and Floors: I luckily still had the refrigerator box I used in my Almost Doll photoshoot. This became the walls and floor of my set thanks to some paint and a lot of patience. The marble floor was created by printing out stone tiles and gluing them down.

Fireplace: I cut fruit boxes (chosen for their extra sturdy construction) to fit the length of the wooden mantle I purchased than began slowly creating the shape by cannibalizing leftover refrigerator box cardboard cut into various curved shapes. I used up two rolls of masking tape and the empty cardboard rings were quickly incorporated into my design. I sawed off the cap of two water bottles, glued them to the masking tape rings and glued those to upside-down margarine containers. These became the columns on either side of my fireplace. I filled in the space behind them with newspapers and more masking tape, and then smoothed clay over the cardboard edges and newspaper to disguise them. I created fancy swirls of clay to add the extra details my fireplace needed and to tie in the lines and designs already present on the water bottles. I then painted the inside of the fireplace black and sprayed the rest of it with textured stone finish spray paint to hide the masking tape lines and the seams where the clay met the cardboard.

Fainting couch: I found a scrap of wood with rounded corners and cut about three inches off, then nailed those three inches to the longer piece so that the two were perpendicular. I nailed the wooden craft candle sticks to the base of the sofa, then set to work on the cushion. I basically made a pillow case for the foam, then stapled it to the wood base and carefully hand sewed everything in place, arranging the various puckers that arose from the curved shape I had chosen so that everything looked elegant. I glued sculpted clay decoration to the place where the two pieces of scrap wood meet to disguise the seam, and then wrapped the rest of the wood edge with fabric trim. The base was then painted black and dry brushed with gray to make it look aged.

Curtains: The umbrae effect was achieved with an airbrush. I folded pattern paper and taped it to the wall to make the sheers.

Mantle decorations: I wrapped Pom juice containers in tinfoil, then painted the foil with watered down black paint so that they looked like aged metal. I like the effect, so I made a “mirror” out of cardboard wrapped in tinfoil and painted similarly. The dish holding the stones was also made pout of foil and painted to look aged.

Sconces: I sculpted the sconces out of foil and painted them black to keep my metal tones consistent. The shades are made of pudding containers I painted white.

What was your concept?

My doll’s story is set in a luxurious mansion and I knew immediately that I wanted to create a room in which that story could unfold. I wanted the room to have traditional Victorian and Rococo touches while still feeling sleek and modern. To do this, I decided to use only back, white and silver/gray. The green came into the design when the marble I printed turned out more colorful than expected. I played it up with plants to make the room feel alive and vibrant. I was determined to make the furniture and accessories feel as if they had been in the room for several generations, hence the fainting couch and its aged silver legs and base. I went with modern checkered fabric to give the impression that the room had recently been renovated and restored. I hope the room feels like a harmonious blend between modern and Victorian styles so that the overall impression is one of timelessness.

Purchased Materials: Glue and glue sticks - $3 (half of a $4 pack, one bag of $1 glue sticks)
Paint - $10 (two $3 tubes, parts of other colors)
Fabric scraps - $5 (various, collected from yard sales and remnants)
Moss - $2 (about 30% of a $4 bag)

How did your make your set?

I constructed the walls, floor, and bed out of cardboard. The tree and branches were made from papier-mache using recycled newspapers and glue. I also used hot glue to add some details. I painted next, covering everything with several layers of paint. I glued the moss onto the tree after the paint dried. I covered the bed with fabric, used scraps to make the rug, pillows, and carrot pillow, and put it all in the set.

A 'rabbit burrow' for my Yo-SD White Rabbit. I based the idea around an illustration I drew some time ago.

Purchased Materials: $20 = £13

White card (£2)
Plain and coloured paper (£2)
Black Sharpie pen (£0.60)
Approx 1 tube acrylic paint in total (£1)
Approx 1 pastel crayon in total (£1)

Recycled material (£2)

1 small block of Fimo clay (£1.50)
Cotton wool (£0.50)
Selotape (£0.50)

How did your make your set?

The floor is "tatami matting" - I cut some straw matting into tatami mat shapes and bound the edges with masking tape, coloured with Sharpie pen, and taped together.

The walls are cardboard boxes, cut to size and taped together, supported with more cardboard and cardboard tubes, and then "wallpapered" with acrylic-painted paper.

I then decorated the walls - the mock-cupboard is decorated with a drawing done in pastels, and the screen doors are made of paper cut to size. The coloured paper behind the screen has holes punched in it, so the light filters through as if they were stars :)

The kotatsu - dining table, Japanese style - is constructed from white card, coloured with Sharpie and acrylic paint, and stuck together with tape. The futon-style blanket is made of an old shirt, with Sharpie lines drawn on, stuffed with cotton wool (my wig material!).

Finally, I scraped off some wax from a couple of tealights and constructed some candle-holders from Fimo clay, filling them with wax and using the wicks from the tealights to make my own candles.

What was your concept?

A Japanese dining room.

How did your make your set?

This set took me an incredibly long time. Most of the time was sunk into making the couch and moldings. I only went to the store once on the first Sunday, where I picked up the wooden feet, scrapbook paper, and some free fabric samples - everything else I had on hand.

FLOOR:
The floor is cardboard from a box. I painted the floor with a very light wash of brown acrylic craft paint, then drew lines on it for the slats with a pen.

WALLS:
The walls are also made from box cardboard. The wallpaper is scrapbook paper that is glued together, and then masking-taped to the cardboard under the moldings.

MOLDING:
The molding took the absolute longest! It took several days of working to complete all the molding. All the molding is made from simple computer printer paper (the kind slightly thicker than regular paper). To make the folds I scored each one with a craft knife and then folded it. I had to be very precise when measuring where to score. It is all glued together with regular white glue, and then glued onto the wall.

WINDOWS:
The windows are made from thicker plastic packaging. I cut out the shape and then thought about what stained glass pattern I wanted. I drew it out on paper first, then scanned it into the computer to make it more symmetrical. I printed out my image and then traced the image onto the plastic with a black sharpie. On the other side, I colored in sections with a red sharpie marker. To make the windows frosted I taped was paper onto the back.

CURTAINS:
Curtains are sewn from plain red cotton. The rods are made of pieces of some dowel I had, and I put some wooden beads on the end. I added some trim I got from the remnant bin onto the top. I fastened the trim to the rod with some jumprings and a small amount of chain. The curtain tie-backs are also from remnant trim and are fastened to the wall by poking headpins through the wall cardboard.

COUCH:
The base underneath is made of thick cardboard hotglued and masking-taped together. Once I had my base done I had some sheets of foamy stuff that I had gotten in a doll package that worked well for the padding. I wrapped the padding where heeded and then glued the fabric done. Once everything was upholstered I sewed the seat cushion. Last, I glued on the trim where the fabric edges were and then glued on the wooden feet. The pillows are made from the fabric samples.

OTTOMAN:
The ottoman is my favorite thing in the room. The body of the ottoman is from an empty masking tape roll from the second leg of the contest. First I glued some cardboard to the bottom, then I "upholstered" the roll with 2 un-matching fabric samples. I cut out holes in the bottom and glued on some of the smaller wooden pegs fro legs. I added 5 inches of some trim I made, it worked very nicely! The top cushion is a velvet scrap. I upholstered around the foamy stuff from the couch. I sewed a random button I had in the middle. The top comes off and my doll stores her knitting projects in there.

TABLES:
The tables were the fastest to construct. I used plastic disposable tops that come when you buy something like sushi or rolls. I painted them brown with craft acrylic paint, and then glued on this really cheap yellow cord around it to make it look not so like a food top. The legs I used the remainder of the dowel I had, but I ran out and one of the table's legs is made of wooden chopsticks from the same dinner the containers are from. I had 4 more legs left over from the pack of 8, so I glued them onto the coffee table dowels. I laid some scraps of paper and lace on top of the tables to make them look more table-y.

HOUSEPLANT:
No idea what kind of houseplant it is, I just started cutting leaf shapes! I used 1 sheet of dark green construction paper and used a craft knife to cut the leaves. The pot is a plastic sauce container and the water catcher is the lid. I painted both white. I got a toilet paper roll, wrapped it in regular white paper, and that was my plant stand. Added rocks in the pot.

LAMP:
The lamp took a long time, I don't know why. The shade is a plastic sauce up (the same kind I used with the plant pot), and the base is the lid. I wrapped 2 fabric samples around it and cut out the top. I glued on some lace and cord scraps to make it look more like a lamp. The stand is a dowel, and the top is carved into a point and I glued on a little plastic bead (that I had found in my carpet...). The base is reinforced with lots of cardboard, and the dowel poked through. The shade is held on with some wire. I made a little light pull switch out of a bead and chain.

PICTURE FRAMES:
I hated making these. I had planned to do more but I was running out of time. I didn't want to use photos of my dolls so that it wouldn't give me away, so I used my Mamegoma plush collection. My doll likes it better that way anyway. The 3 smaller frames are made from the leftovers of the square molding, and the mats are cardboard. The larger frames are chopsticks I sawed into 45º angle, then painted gold.

VASE/FLOWERS:
I made the vase during my all-nighter. It is made of a small amount of air-dry clay. The vase is hollow all the way and has thin walls.... it took so long to do it that way, so very long. I wasn't too pleased with it either because it was all... lopsided. When the basic shape was done I spent a few hours going through all my grits of sandpaper until I got to 2000, then I polished it until it was glossy. The flowers are made from air-dry clay, and they were very quick to make. I poked them onto some wire, and added some leaves made of the scraps from the houseplant.

OTHER:
Pincushion: small pieces of felt + pins
thread spools: thread wrapped around paper
sewing fabric on table: just... squares of scrap fabric
yarn balls: aluminum foil ball with yarn wrapped around it
knitting needles: toothpicks!
feather pot: small tape roll with fabric samples wrapped around. Feathers generously donated by my pet birds.
books: brown mailing envelope for covers, regular paper for insides.
pencil: toothpick colored with marker
Candle: clay stand with earring stud stuck in. The candle is clay with small piece of thread for the wick

What was your concept?

I knew what I wanted as soon as the contest was announced... a Victorian themed living room just for my dolls! I knew that it wasn't very original, or that other people might do it.... but I really wanted it for my dolls. I decided on MSD size. I went for a red/green color scheme and just made it up as I went when I found junk materials. I had so many other plans (chandelier, stove, plates) but I ran out of time or money. I'm definitely keeping it and my dolls will live in it often! The only problem is.... it's so big!

How did your make your set?

I opened up one large 18x24 cardboard box to make the walls, leftover flaps were either folded forward to create the half ceiling, or cut off and laid down to make a base floor. I mixed up some paint to cover the 'walls' (sans the place where the screen doors would be)

Scrap flooring was cut and assembled to make the border flooring in the room, sticks painted cherry wood red were glued along the edges for detail. In the middle is a floor mat that I crocheted a with brown and green twine.

A small, almost square piece of scrap wood was used for the table, and a piece of scrap floor trim was cut and used to make the legs. They were hot glued together and painted black.

The screen door, the standing screen and the lamp were are made with long square sticks of various thicknesses, cut, hot glued and painted either black or cherry, and the tissue paper was glued to the opposite sides. The wall scroll is also a piece of tissue paper glued to a fabric backing.

The artwork on the scroll and standing screen were drawn by me and specifically for the challenge. The fans are folded tissue paper, accented with a bit of paint.

The pillows, table mat, and scroll backing were made from the same strip of brocade fabric, cut, sewn and/or glued.

The small basket holding the batting was made with masking tape.

The 'light' in the lamp was made with three glow sticks.

The required material from my wig is the white batting used to stuff the pillow, you can also see it in the small masking take basket.

What was your concept?

The concept was to make a traditional Japanese style room (to the best of my ability, of course LOL)

Bristol board x4 - $1
-------------------------
=$19.50

Everything here I had already so its hard to sum it all up. The foam boards my parents bought a bulk box to make signs for selling blueberrys, masking tape, glues and paints catheads and dowel, beads were bought from the dollar store. Spraypaint was some half rusted can I found in the bacement and the vinal was left over from when my parents reupholsted the quade bike seat 2 years ago. The sculpty were little blocks I found in my old craft bin. Same with the scrap fabric for the 'pillow' and blanket just strips of scrap fabric

How did your make your set?

I started out boxing out the shapes for the couch, then the entertainment center/shelves. I cut them in size and taped them in place with left over masking tape, then spray painted the shelves. While that dried I worked on the couch, sculpting the foam bords and glueing them into place. Then I covered in with the black vinal and trimmed off the access. Same for the footstool. I glued on the silver beads which were really umm those things you stick through paper and butterly out the back of them to hold paper together (i don't know what they're called) but I had to clip off those bits so they would lay flat when glued on. then pained the details with silver paint. Same with the couch. After that I started working on things like the table and sculpted bits. The table is just cut foam board with a small piece of smokey plexiglass I found in the bacement. It's kind of beak up looking but I thought that would give it that well used look. The legs are cut and painted wooden doweling that were hot glued on. I spent quite a few nights sculpting different things Like the vase which also holds my part of the 'use something from your wig making' as the green grass stuff is shredded tape that I used for my wig :) The wall decorations are all hand sculpted, the candles in them and the candle thing on the shelf is only 2 birthday candles cut up and melted smooth then melted onto the items to make them stay and look real. The candle holders on the shelf are cut and painted dowel glued into a painted foam holder. The speakers are spray painted empty cigarette boxes with a printed out design of a speaker texture glued on. I made the decorative bead things hanging from them with old charms and beads from broken jewelry my grandmother used to horde for crafts so I took apart a bunch of things and put them back together. the books were made of handcut paper and glued together with extra scraps of vinal from the couch and painted. A decorative box is made of painted foam board and some left over masking tape weave. The weird thing next to the TV is just hot glue I used on a piece of metal to make webs then hotglued together and painted black and the TV itself is just glued and painted foam board with a printout from Nosferatu to make it look a bit more TV like. The cigarette is a piece of lolipop stick with paint. The ashtrey was made with sculpty and painted. the ashes in them are real. Once everything was made I started to set up. Laying out some bristol board and the walls attaching them with more tape then laid in the floor tiles. Since they are just repair tiles I didnt have enough to make the set as large as I'd of liked but I tried to make due. The tiles are spot glued in place with a dab of hot glue. After that I moved in the couch, table and footstool and then stuck the wall decorations in place with hot glue and stocked the shelves with what I had made. Poped in the boys, gave them popcorn I'd sculpted and took pictures :) All in all it took FOREVER and I'm rather happy with it. Also the couch lifts off the bottom of the box and I can use it as storage for later too! WOOT!

What was your concept?

A livingroom, originally the idea was much larger and detailed, but I needed to keep on buget and there were some things I just couldnt make, not to mention lack of space >.<; All in all I think it turned out rather well and I'll deffinantly be used parts of it again in the future for shoots :)

How did your make your set?

I cut up a Soom Box I just received for my set. I covered the wall in red paper, and made the floor out of cut up white and black paper. Each square was glued individually. I then covered the back wall in different colored sandpaper to create a brick effect. I used more cardboard to make my fireplace and covered the outside edges in Rocks, contact paper and sandpaper. I made the fire out of paper and cardboard. Using Molding clay I made two ghosts and glued them to the walls, and a small pumpkin in the corner on my table. The table was made from cardboard, rocks glued individually into place and black sandpaper. Using little skeleton bits from the $.99 Store I made them into Mirrors for my walls and even a chandelier. For my chandelier I used my old wig materials and made a lit up chandelier with what looks like candles out of the erasers and brown tightly rolled paper. I also made out of my wig materials, a candelabra for my Fire place. Using Masking tape I made a mummy and hung him from the ceiling with packing twine. I then made a white paper outline of a dead body in front of the fire place. For my piece of Furniture using two tombstones I made a sofa out of cardboard, glue, sandpaper.

I wanted to make a type of Haunted house room for my DollZone Fox to be Master of. I wanted his house to look as elegantly scary as his suit and faceup.

How did your make your set?

Frame: The frame is made from wood that I bought from my neighbor, who was going to burn scraps after a project.
I tried my best to pick pieces that were already the size I needed to avoid as much cutting as possible. I carefully measured
the pieces, and over 3-4 days cut them out using a hand saw. For the windows I used a hand drill to make starter holes in the corners
and then used a keyhole saw to cut out the rest of the window. I then pieced them together with various nails I had pulled from the boards,
and other nails I already had in the shop, I used plywood for the walls and small pieces of wood for the braces. Once the walls were up I painted
them.

Furniture: The furniture was created using various wood scraps, the table tops were already the right size, but I had to cut the legs. I then applied
Sculpey to the legs to make various decorative parts, and to even out the legs slightly (handsaw cuts :< ). Lastly I painted the tables to make them
look like one piece.

Picture Frames: The picture frames hanging on the wall were made of old watch faces. I've had a bag of broken, dirty, wrist watches for a while now that I got
at the thrift store and figured they would be great for this scale. I took apart the watches, removed the inner parts, removed the bands and cleaned the faces and
corroded batteries out. I placed the faces, gears, and random other parts into a bowl for later. I then took the faces, and with a jeweler's saw sawed off the parts that
the bands connect to, I then filed them down even with the sides of the face, to make them look like frames. Lastly I drew little pictures on paper, colored them with
markers and cut them out and placed them in the frames.

Elevator: The elevator Frame itself is made from the metal part that holds the cathode ray tube in place in the tv. These tvs are easy to find on trash day, in the dumpsters of electronic repair shops, and at the throw away pile at good will stores- which is where I found mine. After taking apart the Tv, I moved the parts that could possibly store a charge over to the workbench. Here I set up a ground so that I could discharge any electricity that was still stored. I did have supervision during this stage, for safety, but not help in doing the actual work- when working with voltage it is always good to have someone there in case of emergency. Once I was sure it was safe, I then used a screwdriver to let air into the vacuum tubes- if the vacuum is not released it could cause the tubes to implode if dropped and be very dangerous. Now that all the fun parts were done, I removed the CRTs and then unscrewed all the various metal parts holding them in to leave just the frame. I then ran the old rusty chains behind it to make it look like a lift, as well as various other gears and plastic parts. I used Sculpey to make the door and wood scraps to make the walls of the lift itself.

The Lab: The lab was made from one of the pieces of furniture and then various gears, tv parts, vacuum tubes, plastic test tubes, wood scraps, sculpey, and parts that the school was throwing out (which I got the heads up about from a teacher friend who saw them in the trash!). The things attached to the wall were made mostly from the gears, but anything attached to the wall was done so mostly by small nails, wood glue, and then sometimes hot glue. On the wall near the elevator the gears were attached the same way, and the test tube holders were made from sculpey.

The Lightning Ball: This was by far the most dangerous part of the project, the hardest still goes to wood cutting. The lightning ball starts out as a monitor hack. First I found a discarded CRT monitor, well 2 crt monitors and a crt tv that did not work before I got to the one that did, these again are easy to find in the trash on trash day. First I had to discharge the voltage from the crt tubes, like the tv, I took off the case and I made a ground and slipped it under the anode cup until I knew I was touching the metal. I heard no pop, which would indicate stored voltage, so I knew it was safe to remove the cup. Then I attached a wire to the flywheel driver, and fed it through a hole I had made, using some brute force, and put it all back together. I also attached another wire to the ground cable and fed it through as well. Now I made the light bulb ready by using a quick spray of clear varnish to attach a metal screen to the bulb, then secured the bulb in a piece of plastic above the hole where the wires come through the case, and I attached the high voltage wire to the bottom of the light bulb. Then I hooked the ground wire onto the top of the screen. Then I plugged the monitor into a power strip so that i could have a switch to turn the light on and off, and then you have very high voltage lightning. I was very very cautious when using this as it is extremely dangerous if you don't know what you are doing, and although it sounds silly, please don't try this unless you know what you are doing, because you will be using nearly 30,000 volts!

The Engine Room: This was pretty much a hodge podge of all the various left over CRTs from the tv, wires, and circuit boards I couldn't find a use for anywhere else- I piled them up behind the set in order to create a deep space behind the window of the office. Yay for using up all the parts that would leech dangerous chemicals into the environment if left in a landfill! :D

The Clones: The clones are made out of sculpey and floating in tonic water, which glows under black light.

What was your concept?

My concept was a mad scientist's lab, headquarters and office all in one. I wanted it to look like a workshop but also have cool stuff like a genetic experiment, some high voltage electricity, an elevator, and an engine room.

How did your make your set?

I first started with making the base of the set-- painting cardboard and cutting it to the size, then attaching them all together with tape/staples/glue. After the base was built, I made the other details, like sculpting stuff with clay-- I had to take out some things because it would be over $20- ^^ The walls were finished the last-

Scale: Larger Dolls
Set size: 28"x20"x32"

Free Materials: cardboard, masking tape, packing peanuts, stale popcorn, old powdered gelatin, almost dried up paint. . . a carpet remnant that they wouldn't take money for (but I'll estimate if I must ^_~).

Purchased Materials: Shot glass ($1), beads ( 1/3 of a $1 package=$.33), napkin ring ($.99), paint ($1.99), fabric ($4.39), contact paper (1/3 of a $6.43 roll=$2.15), LED keychain ($1.89), carpet remnant (actually given away, but estimate at $1.22 sqft, 20"x28" piece=$4.29), scupley ($1.25), wood scrap ($1?).

How did your make your set?

I cut the contact paper into strips to simulate wood paneling, hand sewed the beanbag chair and stuffed it with packing peanuts. Made a macrame hanging from wig material, found some carpet, made a crude, bachelor type table from a scrap of wood I had hanging around, the lava lamp is a shot glass filled with tinted gelatin with beads suspended in it and lit from the bottom with the LED keychain.

What was your concept?

The whole thing started with the idea of making a lava lamp. It snowballed into the idea of Zack moving out of his parents' basement as signing up with SOLDIER. Being a young man his furniture would consist of a beanbag chair, a table made from a pallet, and a lava lamp. He couldn't afford the cinderblock shelving unit. ^_~
