Triathlon Challenge #3 VOTING!

Aug 28, 2016

    1. Welcome to the final stage of voting for the 2016 Triathlon!

Please take a moment to look through all of the amazing entries below. In this final challenge, contestants were asked to physically transform their doll and create an animated GIF illustrating the transformation. There were no restrictions on materials, a budget of $20, and entrants had one week to execute their transformation and document it in photos!

When you have finished checking out the entries, please vote! Voting is open to all members, including contestants!

Voters have five points to distribute to five different entries
      based on the following criteria:
      • Which entry demonstrated the most cohesive visual concept across all three challenges?
      • Which GIF had the most engaging narrative?
      • Which transformation demonstrated the most complexity and technical skill?
      • Which final entry GIF is your favorite?
      • Which transformation still photo was the most skilled?
Each entry can only receive ONE point from each voter, so please choose a different entry for each criteria. If you vote for the same entry multiple times, ALL of your votes for that entry will be thrown out. Contestants are allowed to vote for themselves with ONE vote point.

Voting ends on Wednesday, August 31st 11:59pm EDT :)

When the clock strikes, night falls and her feline side comes out.

Because I had envisioned my airy, breezy transparent outfit as part of the doll's character, I wanted the loss of the outfit to be part of the transformation. A change of eyes and some green washi tape carried on the transformation and a Pipos Charlotte contributed the final head, paws and tail.

In the corner of a shelf, a small tome caught the student's eye. She slipped the book out from among its peers slowly. The leather was dry and cracked. As she opened the cover the scent of yellowed paper, dust, and cigarette smoke wafted from the pages. She gently turned one page, and then the next, coming to rest on a woodblock print. Figure 36: A rare Japanese butterfly, now extinct. Walking back to her carrel, she traced the outline of the delicate wings with her fingertip and began to take notes.
      ...........................................................
For this contest, my doll began her journey as a Victorian butterfly specimen. So, once transformed, it seemed only fitting that her final form should be knowledge itself. I chose to change her into a book. A receptacle of knowledge that would stand the test of time from the Victorian period to our own age. I chose 1 o'clock as her transformation time as a symbol that she is one more piece of knowledge added to the collective pool man has acquired thus far. It also seemed doubly fitting that she become a book because this doll's character is a librarian. ^__^
The book is made from cardboard and crepe paper, with tea stained pages that feature the butterfly look of my doll from the first challenge. I also made three stages of the book cover so that I could change them out in sequence as it "grew" over her butterfly wing.

With the theme being transformation I decided to go with one of the most well known forms of transformation while also keeping within my doll's character so I changed her into a butterfly.
Rather than create permanent changes to my Scorpio I attached her wings and her antennae with magnets and white tack and sewed wire into bits of fur to go around her tail, arms, and legs.
I also decided to switch out her eyes from blue to a pair that are very pale pink.
After deciding what was needed to transform her into a butterfly, the last piece of the puzzle was how the transformation would come about, so with the help of glue, tape, cardboard cut from a 12 pack box, a lid from a McDonald's Frappe and some left over grocery bags I built her a cocoon in three different stages.

Welp, first of all I want to say that she's not turning into a werefolf- she's a forest spirit, and a black wolf-like beast is her true form. Secondly, I really did struggle a bit with this last part- not only was I away on vacation, so away from all the things I have hoarded at home- it was also a holiday period when nearly no store was open. My initial idea was to make her a full wolf bodysuit, but I couldn't manage it resource and time wise. So, I guess this is a partial transformation? It's her turning into part of her true form. I'm sorry for not including full-body pics but aside from getting the wolf head and losing her accessories in the process there was no much other change to note.

A fairy enjoying the last few days of summer stumbles upon a shallow puddle. In it she sees a beautiful shell.

"How peculiar!" she says, reaching for the shell.

      The clock strikes noon.

Suddenly smoke begins to rise out of the water. It covers the puddle, and then the fairy too!

When the smoke recedes, the fairy has been transformed into a mermaid. The shell had been magical!

She smiles, delighted to have a new way to enjoy a beautiful summer day.

The Bringer of Storms spends hours conjuring up the wave, creating wind and clouds, and once high tide nears, she begins to change. Something in her stirs, and awakens. Her hair turns white and grows wild like the wind, she has no need for armor and she sheds it, donning a simple frock instead. And her eyes turn white, blind to our world, and seeing through the eye of the Storm.

My inspiration came partly from Storm in the X-Men universe, where her powers are over weather. She's so powerful creating thunderstorms, and I wanted to emulated that power post-transformation with the Bringer of Storms. I didn't realize until I was brain-storming (pun intended) GIF ideas that Storm would be a great muse for this project.
The transformation is established through a wig and eye change, plus the change of her outfit. There really are no other notable details that would require a collage.

Soo - what happens when you entrust all of your cosmetic cybernetic implants to an evil mega-corporation in a cyberpunk dystopia? They abuse their power.

My cyborg guy is undergoing his nightly charging cycle, the alarm to plug in goes off - he plugs in and goes into sleep mode. Unbeknownst to him during his sleep cycle Psi Incorporated implant strange instructions in his brain (the creepy clown), and step by step modify his body into a war model ready for the planned global takeover.

Numerous processes used this time around. He's had his face-up redone twice, it changes subtly at first, and then into something utterly creepy as sleep-mode descends into something more sinister.

His neck ruff was patterned out of thin transparent folder-divider and painted, he's had some of his tattoos 3Ded with milliput (the shoulder plates and hexagons), and his fingers lengthened into creepy silver versions of themselves with milliput.

His cyborg "ears" are the cut-down remains of a pair of in-ear earphones, hollowed out, & filled with milliput and neodynium magnets. His spine ports were made with Green-Stuff, and were sized specifically to hold the EL wire in place, they have magnets embedded in them, so are removable.

His transparent blue and black leg and arm armour are both made out of scraps of plexiglass/acrylic that was heat formed around tubes of similar diameter to his limbs to form shin guards and upper arm armour.

The light-up EL wire is all temporarily attached via the plugs in his ports, and the cut down EL panels are held down with a gentle adhesive that washes off.

With an animal design clock he would naturally change into an animal. However I didnโ€™t want the transformation to be realistic with growing fur etc., but rather surreal and funny with some weird SFX using the โ€žeyeโ€œ patterns from my clock.
I dismissed the idea of painting directly on my doll for I didnโ€™t want any permanent changes or stains. I recreated the pattern with actual materials which I could glue an sculpt on my doll, sequins, googly eyes, pompoms and ribbons.
I used reverse engineering: I started shooting the final transformation first and then deconstructed the change back to the original style. It wasnโ€™t easy because I only had one try for each transformation stage.

In the original story of The Little Mermaid, the prince marries another girl instead of the mermaid. The last condition for her to stay a human if the prince marries someone else is for her to kill him or she will turn into seafoam at dawn the following day. Instead she sacrifices her life for his happiness, and as she dissolves into seafoam, she re-emerges from the sea as a sky maid for her good deeds. To achieve this transformation I created several pairs of bird wings from scratch for my doll, starting with the final large wings so I knew what to work up to, and then from there decided how many in between sizes I would have. I had plenty of downy feathers from previous crafting, and purchased the new feather packs for the sleek looking main feathers. I used pictures of barn owl wings for reference for the large pair. I used the foam sheets to cut out the base wing shapes and glued the feathers to them. I used my pipe cleaners to help stabilize the shape of the large wings.

For the transformation sequence, I used fleece fabric and blue t-shirts for the water, as well as bubble wrap, used dryer sheets, and cotton balls for the sea foam. The painting used for the sunrise is an acrylic piece I painted some time ago for an art class I teach.

Tying all three rounds together, the transformation here involves a pair of wings, mirroring the wings from the first round's outfit. Instead of going for a traditional look, however, I chose to create something a bit more monstrous, a bit different from what might be expected when adding wings to a doll. The traditional, classic look becomes something a bit off and unusual instead, an unsettling metamorphosis for the subject.

My story is about a seemingly mild mannered art gallery proprietor who turns into a cyberspace adventurer/explorer when the clock strikes 6 PM and her next mission begins when she destroys the clock that allows her entry into the black hole to the next galaxy.

I used the corset top from the first challenge and altered it to look like a cyberspace suit and added chaps that were made from recycled packing material. Trim details were created with decorative duck tape. I made cyber arm bands, a cyber gun, and shoulder pieces out of air dry clay using old phone parts as a mold to create texture and details. I embellished the gun with recycled tubing. I created her helmet with built in googles with duct tape and by cutting mylar into circles then stained them with ink spray to tint them.

Air drying clay headpiece painted black and detailed in nail polish, Black trash bag ironed over a wire frame for wings, the transparent dress was slowly replaced with black. I replaced her eyes with clear plastic beads and shoved a plastic tealight in her head to make them glow. (I did not get a picture of the beads or the light, they were a very last second thing, scavenged from a decorative bowl on my nightstand during the photos)

For this years triathlon i was inspired a lot by the movies legend and the last unicorn so i wanted to emulate the transformation of the lead female role in legend while also keeping with my dolls character since her character is one rather on the dark side. she had her brief moment in the light and now at the strike of the clock changes back into her true self.
I had a lot of fun making this gif it was hard though!

What is the one thing no one else can see? Our inner demons.
"Everyone has demons, what do yours say? "

My doll had some horn parts that I had never used, so I took them out painted them black. Changed her eye and clothes to fit to the dark theme I was going for. I wanted it to be creepy and yet cute.
The clock also changes a bit, if you look closely you can see the hands of the clock moving. In the first frame the clock is not yet 12.00. And you can see vines suddenly starting to cover the clock.
Since this gif was specifically made for this challenge, I chose midnight as the transformation time cause it's the number 00.00 or 12.00, like DoA's celebration.
The effects in the gif ( changing of colors ) were made with yellow and blue pieces of cellophane.
Although I went with a darker theme than before, I still thought it was fun to be able to create the transformation from good/light to dark/evil.

This challenge taught me something new and I appreciate it a lot! It's always fun to learn something new!

I continued the themes of my second challenge entry, nature and mist. I wanted to create a GIF where the doll summons mist and transforms while doing it. Her surrounding changes too when it is covered bit by bit by light fabrics which represent mist.

Her environment is built using same materials which were used to decorate her clock, willowherbs and hay. I sticked hay to a sponge to help it stay the way I wanted it to be. Sponges with hay and willowherbs were wrapped using bubble wrap and stuffed in small glass jars.

The transformation of my doll includes new outfit (feathers hot glued to fabric and hanging from the sides of her dress), new wig (feathers attached to a cap of an old wig), silver nails, silver dust added on face up and small feathers glued on her eyelashes.

Light and shadows are an important part of this photoshoot and were created using two small desk lamps.

On what she thought was a normal day at any normal time she was reminiscing about the good old day's. but it was not a normal day and a normal time! something strange happened, she felt fait her clock emendated a strange sound, how is it possible time is going backwards!
i wanted to make my doll into a caterpillar-centaur as i like to call it ;P but how to make a butterfly into a caterpillar? she wish to start over or go back to the good old days, the clock granted her wish and reverses time. using camera angles and leaving the camera in one place i got the effect of it growing onto frame. for the hair growing i poked a tiny hole in the wool and place my hair individualy and pulled it out little by little as i took pictures.

When I started thinking about a transformation it brought to mind those old stories of princesses transforming into monsters when the sun set, and how strange unknown creatures come out with the moon. I thought it would be fun to have my strange little doll transform into a horned creature at sunset, so that even though the monsters come out after dark, she could continue to play in the garden.
To make this transformation work I borrowed the blue limb parts from a friend's doll, and sculpted (and painted) feet and three stages of horns to match. The three horn stages make the gif look like her horns are growing, and the feet fit well enough that she can balance on one foot independently on even ground (though she needed a little help during the shoot). I used LEDs to make her dress and the clock glow, though unfortunately very few of the LED lit pictures turned out well (the perils of doing a photo-shoot in the dark during a thunder storm I suppose).

My animation is reminiscent of early 90s television shows (cheesy editing and all!) that had transformation sequences, with a hint of the magical girl touch of Sailor Moon. However, my doll's mermaid form is entirely unique to herself, a stand-alone piece that can be just as beautiful as it can be fun! Everything about her outfit, sans necklace, was made by me (however the headpiece is a few years old and was not created specifically for this challenge) to truly transform my doll with love and passion into the magical being she longs to be once again.

With all the fish around her, it was pretty easy to guess which kind of transformation she would go through ;).
The mermaid tail was made with gold foil over a wire armature and the fins feature many layers of foil, magic foil and tulle. She has also many golden speckles all over her body, since their appearance indicate that the transformation is going to take soon place. Her body was blushed pink-golden as well and her eyes were also transformed into golden ones.

I needed to be able to make do with supplies on hand, and when I looked at my happy Lolita girl, I kept coming back to the idea of her going dark or Goth as a transformation. That made me wonder what might cause her to make such a change, when I hit upon the idea of her losing her adored little brother. I had a black silk handkerchief that I'd rescued from the donation pile, as well as some scraps of black gauzy material and some elastic and velcro, so I made her a skirt, top, and black armband. The nose ring was the most fun, though. I was really worried about scratching her face-up, but she's fine. :) The nose ring is a jump ring. pried open a bit, and held in place by about 1/4 of a clear Zot adhesive dot (commonly used in scrapbooking.)

I couldn't bear the thought of her losing her little bro forever, so I allowed her to find an Alchemy book and bring him back to life. Don't tell the Elric brothers!

My inspiration was the timepiece we created in the second game. I used a cardboard box to make a standee of one of the dwarves from the clock. My GIF begins with my doll daydreaming and looking at the clock. Then suddenly one of the dwarves disappears from the clock and appears beside her. She realizes that she is way too tall for him, so she wishes herself smaller. My GIF follows her progression and ends with her "happily ever after."

Her species is one that undergoes transformations at will, yet when abandoned or otherwise under extreme emotional duress, they can transform against their will into malformed creatures. She has been left alone for so long, she can no longer hold back that transformation. Because she is otherwise so graceful yet so fierce, my inspiration for her form was a swan and a harpy.

I wanted my doll's transformation to show off her ears, which had been mostly hidden thus far, and to have a strong contrast from her appearance in the first two rounds. What better way to do that than to display her true mousie nature? Her "true" legs and tail are needle felted and sewn over scrap wire in order to be poseable, and her wig is layered tulle and fluff cut from leftover costume feathers. Her tiny quartz necklace is an echo of her earlier magical guise.

And when the clock struck 12, the prince turned into a princess... I've always been fascinated by how easily BJDs can change gender -- I own several heads that were intended as boys but are on girl bodies, so I thought that would make for an interesting transformation. I replicated my doll's tattoos and piercings on an old YID body that's waiting to be traded with my friend (so the replicas won't last long!) and transformed him into a girl, swapping out the arms first and then the entire body (unfortunately, YID legs will not fit on Soom SG bodies...). The head is still his, though! ;)

She can feel it in her bones, it's almost that time. She checks her orb, and it confirms. She's ready to shed all these fae court clothes and obligations, to return to something more wild and free. The forest spirit who once gave its life to save her is roiling within her, calling her to race through the forest with her pack.
--- I made my girl a new wig, out of long alpaca hair from my stash. The wig cap was made from a cut up pair of shorts. I created patches of fur out of clay, but wanted them to also resemble tree bark, inspired by the forest spirit in my story. I also made a pair of wolfy ears from clay, which I painted and added fur to. I created a tail with a wire base and some leftover craft fur I had. I added dark blushing to her hands. An outfit and eye change completed her transformation.

I originally wanted to turn her into my kitty dolly, but since I was a unable to do that, I decided to use my kitty's ears, tail, and paws along with some clock wings to do her transformation. I also chose to use a different wig. The background is some space fabric from my stash, I thought it was fitting for my galactic girl.

Inspired by the manga Wish (angel turns into a chibi at night, and full on angel during the day), she turns into this kitty girl at night, she's stronger in this form, more alert and agile. When the clock changes back to daytime she turns back into her human self.

I wanted to tell the story of becoming the godess of wild magic. Everyday, she cleansed herself in the sacred pool and would meditate. Every day she would hope the gods would take favor on her, and use her body as a vessel for divine work. On this day Asteria, the goddess of wild magic, granted the girl's wish.

As soon as I read the rules, I knew I wanted my four-armed godess. I tried several things, and finally cameup with a solution that was completly removeable. I strung the second set of arms through the same stringing channel. She is a bit top heavy, but she can still ballance on one foot! I used the same technique for the "moss" body blushing, as I did on the clock, and added flecks of gold. Most of the week was spent with abandoned trials for the four-arm mod, and making sure I had all the photos for the narriative.

Drawing inspiration from the unicorn on the face of my doll's clock, I decided to make her transform into a unicorn herself. I used InstaMorph to make three different stages of the transformation, coating them in gloss and pearl powder for a little extra detail. They are stuck on with eye putty (blue tac).

I wanted to be able to bring together the gold outfit with a story. In the end, I settled on a sort of Midas-type story. She desires riches and collects them with no point but to hoard them. In the end, she becomes one of her own treasures.

A sly change at midnight revealing a hidden self, with a clap changed to a cat.

I storyboard'd the transformation on paper focusing on 8 main poses as I could just adjust the transitional poses as I went along. My doll is strung rather loosely so I prepared wire and toothpicks to jam in the joints and elastics to hold poses. The option parts used including the hands, are actually made for older unoa models so they don't quite fit. I use some stone rings as bracelets to cover the visible wrist elastic. I used hot glue to temporarily hold the hands in certain poses. When the clock reaches midnight I switched out the eyes, and added cat ears to show the physical change, she continues a cat like dance to show the change in self.

My inspiration was transformations in nature. Not only the cicada, which was the theme of my entries, but also the seasons which I tried to illustrate in my gif. (Yes I know a cicada cocoon does not actually look like that haha it was just for the purpose of my transformation theme :) In the beginning, she is wrapped up to represent a caterpillar. I hand crafted a doll sized cocoon with a side opening to show the transformation process. I did my best to show the seasons changing and then had my doll emerge from the cocoon in the "spring" fully developed into her true form!

Ok, it took me forever to actually figure out what I was going to do for this. So as I mentioned earlier he is my personification of time, specifically the past so I eventually figured that it would make sense to have a sort of 'decay' over time; him growing old over the eons. Naturally because time just keeps going, he had to be reborn somehow, hence the little sprout thing in the final photos. I surrounded hi with violets to tie it back to the first challenge photo shoot with him sitting in the flowers.

My character's clock concept centered around loss, and the outfit I created for the first challenge is actually more similar to her deceased partner's style. I went into this transformation with the theme of getting through grief to become more yourself again. Her bright colours and warrior style are much more suited to her actual personality and her large stained glass wings offer freedom, even if she is still a bit fragile.
I used glue and paint on vinyl for varying sizes of wings, and painted directly on her body parts for her armor. Her wig is made from wool and the larger sizes of wings have copper wire structure for posability.

My first entry focused on a very light and pure image- no color, very innocent looking. I decided to show what would be the flip side, the darkness. I exchanged her short light hair for a dark half clip vibrant red. Her seemingly weightless skirt for a heavy black one, and the bodice for and exposed black and spikey variant. I exposed wounds that once lied under her perfect skin. The open gash on her chest exposing part of an anatomically correct Heart.

She began as a ethereal angel...she had a dream that the clock told her when it reached late afternoon on August 27 she would see a big change in herself. She never imagined that it would be an ego issue which resulted in a larger head and a darker persona. she took on her friends head. Her clothing changed into a Asian robe and hat. Even her hair, eyes and eyelashes changed.

As her anniversary clock winds down, she decides finally to let it rest. As it comes to a stop at 9:00, she steps away from her memories, letting the past be, leaving her memories behind. She is then enveloped in the silk of the butterflies she surrounded by, changed by her acceptance of her fate and born anew, no longer the mourning widow, but ready to face her life with the fresh face and new perspective of her companions. She sheds her old ways and steps away from her lingering sorrows.

Well, first off let me mention that that's not the full gif. Tumblr wouldn't let me upload the full version so I had to cut out a lot of scenes.

Okay, let's get to the fun part. I wanted to keep going with the sea theme so when the clock moves to twelve, he becomes his true self, a merman. He tosses the symbol of his humanity which his crown. As he strokes his hair, it becomes longer and changes color. Fins/armbands magically appear and a bright light hides the final part of his legs becoming a long tail.

In this part, I wasn't able to make everything I wanted to. I made a long tail by hand sewing a blue silky fabric. I then used plastic to make shiny fins on the back of the tail. I was also able to make a pair of clear armbands to resemble fins around the upper arms. One of my friends (not a member of DoA) suggested as a joke that I give him star nipples. I ended up using the last two studs to make this joke come to life.

When I saw that the final challenge was to make a gif, my inner animator decided to take over. My stop motion skills have gotten a bit rusty since I haven't used them in almost a year. To make the light scenes in the gif, I just increased the exposure and then slowly began to decrease it.

So as mentioned in the entry for my clock, this doll's character has Chaos magic, and it is very poorly controlled. Whenever something upsets her, she can lose control of her own magic and raw Chaos will seep into the world around her. In her world, raw Chaos tends to take the form of drippy black tentacles. Me and my best friend also have a non-canon in-joke about her hallucinating lions stealing her shoes. I don't have any toy lions in the house, but I do have some stuffed tigers, so a tiger is playing the part of her imaginary "friend" today.

I didn't want to do anything permanent. I made her pure black shiny eyes with black polymer clay and glazed with Triple Thick. I made the tentacles with a base of craft wire, bulked out with aluminum foil, wrapped in strips of black trash bag, then coated in a black silicone putty, made from silicone caulking, black paint, and corn starch. The tentacles have loops of wire sticking out the thick end, allowing me to string them on to her body in place of her arms. They are fully posable thanks to the wire inside and the flexibility of the silicone. The black dripping from her eyes is Elmer's gel glue, dripped onto a plastic bag, allowed to dry, peeled off, painted black and glazed. It's held on with a little bit of eye putty. The bits of black on her arms midway through and the chunks at her feet at the end are extra bits of cured silicone leftover from making the tentacles.
