Esthetics Transparent mask for making a ghost

Dec 26, 2025

    1. Hello ! I would like to make a kind of ghost/spirit character. I have a floating head in normal skin that I would like to put on a transparent body. I have the same scult in tan skin and I want to do the same character (one is alive and the other is the dead/ghost version)
So, to give the face a transparent/evanescent look, I'd like to create a kind of slightly transparent mask.
For the moment, I'm planning to mold a kind of faceless mask (like kaonashi in the "spirit away" movie) onto the face of the doll using self-hardening clay, and then mold this mask to make one out of transparent resin.
Do you think it would be doable ? I have trouble visualizing what it would look like. Has anyone ever done anything like this?

    2. fascinating fascinating idea. please share photographs when you are done.

for reasons of weight and ease, i would personally construct this mask by covering the doll head with cling film and then layering translucent tissue paper stiffened by mod podge to obtain a cast of the face. the cling film can then be peeled away, leaving you with a paper mask.

this would be more opaque than you are leaning, however, so it may be than resin would be best. your idea for the mold should work, but do not forget to cover the doll’s face with a layer of protective cling film before placing clay to avoid damage.

    3. I hadn't thought of using tissue paper. It does seem simpler. I think I will try this way too, thank you ! I've never done a silicone mold before and, even if there's a lot of tutorial and stuff, It seems complicated....

    4. I'd agree with doing something with either tissue paper mache (like the other commenter said), or maybe even air dry clay (something sandable and lightweight like paperclay) or you could even look to thermal plastic beads or something if you want a small hint of transcuscense! 3D printing with a clear filament could be cool too for a more weird, experimental effect hahaha.

    5. I've been searching for transparent air dry clay but I didnt find any. Thermoplastic seems nice but I'm afraid it causes damage to the head.

    6. Reasonable thing to be cautious about!

The moldable bead form has a melting point lower than boiling water, and is safe to handle after it cools slightly. Since it's considered safe to pour hot water on heads while styling hair, I'd personally /guess/(??) that it'd be safe, but that is completely unsubstantiated, as I haven't tried it before! It would be best to research the plastic's properties/see if anyone has tried it before.

I'd probably avoid the sheer plastic/worbla style though, as that seems like a definite scuff/scratch risk- Good instinct there :sweat

    7. There is uv resin putty / clay which cures clear. Been meaning to try it, but probably won't get around to buying/experimenting for a while myself. I was going to make horns, thoughts about a mask too tbh, fantasy parts.

    8. Interested ! I tried UV resin a bit but it's been quite a while... but I didn't know there was uv resin clay... is the kind of resin used to do nail prothesis?
