Faceups To Eyelash, Or Not To Eyelash? (MSD and YoSD)

Jan 16, 2022

    1. Hi friends! after owning my dolls for [winces] five years I'm finally at a point where I can commission someone to do their faces! I'm so excited! In all honesty, I've tried to do this several times, and I keep getting tripped up on the same thing: I can't decide whether or not to get them eyelashes. I would like some help, please!

My dolls are a Myou Alisa (1/4) and Myou Sybil girl (1/6) and will be getting fairly natural faceups with minimal, if any, obvious makeup—they're meant to be children, the MSD one is a teenager and the YoSD one is like 6–8. (...can you tell I've had some problems developing their characters bc I keep not getting them faceups and don't take them out much as a result?)

Can you please show me some of your 1/4 or 1/6 dolls that don't have fairly natural faceups with OR without eyelashes, along with your opinions on the matter? Maybe also some buying recs if you recommend eyelashes? for YoSDs especially I'm always worried the lashes will be too long.

EDIT: Okay after seeing people's lovely dolls, I think I'm leaning more towards eyelashes, so if you want to share, can you also recommend places to buy some? I'm looking for natural ones that won't be too long, especially on a YoSD. Thank you!

    2. Eye lashes are hit and miss. I think it’s because sometimes people slap either thick lashes or too long lashes.
My only doll to come with them from the company is my 5stardoll Tong Tong (yosd) She was ever so cute with them and she has very natural makeup. Since she was my first dolls and has moved around with me a lot they have fallen out but here’s a picture when I first got her.

I also have a Soom Mylo (second hand) that came to me with eyelashes. Her faceup is quite heavy compared to her original skin tone. They are also very long which causes them to get bent out of shape a bit.

As long as you get the right size for the type of doll, they can give them a very innocent look, especially dolls with big eyes. :) Hope this helps. ^ ^

    3. I've never used eyelashes for any of my faceups, but mostly I felt that I didn't need to. I've seen small dolls with eyelashes and they can look good (I think very rarely have I seen some that look too big or long) but unless you're going for a hyper-realistic look I wouldn't worry about needing them. Most of my faceups tend to be "normal" though and with not a lot of heavy makeup. All the dolls in the pics are MSD, btw.

    4. Ah, thank you! Your dolls are so cute!! Both those eyelashes read as very long to me, but you're right, it does give them a really cute and innocent look. How do you find the right size for your dolls, especially when buying online?

Oh wow, that's almost the exact style I'm going for! Especially the second one with the cat ears. They're adorable! I love how the eyes look, too. I see what you mean about not needing eyelashes.

    5. I was afraid it won't look good on my Irrealdoll Nora (I wanted something realistic) but I think the artist who made her faceup (sillymysterious woman) made it perfectly.

    6. Unlike with actual humans, eyelashes are a real personal preference type of choice. I personally love eyelashes and if I could give them to all my dolls (actual 1:6 figures and OT fashion dolls too!) I would. However, it is a pain in the gut hole for me, to do so for smaller headed dolls. My DZ Mo-Wen came with red ones, which I appreciated, but the texture of them left a lot to be desired. The face up artist didn't place them the way I find them appealing, which made them even less attractive to me. However, for dolls with inset or changeable eyes, I far prefer applied lashes for. I find dolls without them look to me a bit like they are staring, unless they have thickly painted eyeliner, which is not somkething I usually go for, unless the doll came painted like that to me (I paint my own dolls nowadays).

I don't have clear or nice photos of my Mo, but this one is not too craptastic, I think:

Then I redid his face up many years later and gave him different lashes, placed the way I find them more appealing (not drooping downward):

I only own two "mini" sized BJD, most of mine are on the larger side. This one is a Fairyland Chicline Rou, with proportions that would make him closer to 1:5 doll, but too tall for a proper 1:5 and too short for a 1:4 doll. I am a bit of a scale nerd, so don't mind me. His head is tiny, however, compared to most "mini" BJD from his day. Definitely nothing (proportion wise) like MYou minis, but since he is a min-sized BJD with a tiny head, it might help.

I love eyelashes, but they are definitely not something you need on dolls, for sure. Just a matter of personal preference.

    7. I have a mix of both in my collection. For me, it depends on the faceup, and if the doll's hair is in their eyes. I did both of these faceups, and only applied lashes to one:

    8. ooooh yes I saw Silly's shop on the marketplace and her faceups make me wish I was comfy sending my doll heads to Russia but alas, not with all the supply chain/shipping issues right now.

Honestly after seeing people's dolls I'm starting to lean more towards eyelashes :) Where do you even get ones that small?

Interesting! Can you elaborate on what helps you make that decision? Like, what kind of faceup? And what do you mean about the hair?

    9. Most companies and dealers carry eyelashes, you can even use lashes meant for humans.
You can make lashes shorter by setting them further back in the eye well. Or you can put a strip of glue along them, as far back as you want the length of the lashes, then once it's dry cut off the excess from the back (never cut the front of the lashes unless you actually want them blunt). You're basically replacing the plastic lash strip with a glue one. I've also seen people make lashes using the fibers from paintbrushes (with a glue strip to hold them together).

Here are some more examples for you ^^

      Astrid (Soom Glot, 1/6)
Her lashes are human lashes from a Halloween set, they were meant for lower lashes (the upper ones were much longer)

      Daisy (ALM Cocoa, 1/6)
Default lashes from the company (not the best pic, sorry ;; )

      Yuu (Dollzone Mo, 1/4)
Not sure where these are from (he belongs to a friend)

      Nakayubi (Dollzone Mo, 1/4)
Default lashes from the company (he no longer has the default faceup and I didn't give him lashes when I repainted him)

      Isabelle (Illusion Spirit ShiJu/Slade, 1/4)
I can't remember where I got these, but they're F-Styler brand. They come in a long strip that you cut to fit the width of the doll's eyes. You can get multiple lashes this way, but they're not as pretty as regular pairs can be.

    10. I personally purchase inexpensive human-meant fake eyelashes you can find at most stores in the USA, in the "beauty" isles. I just trim the width then place them higher or deeper inside the eye-well to shorten the length. For the face plate with the closed eyes, I did trim the length, but it is a hard thing to do well. Not something I have managed to complete cleanly or nicely in the many years I have trimmed eyelashes for my own dolls (which have been too many for my own sanity). There are some eyelashes meant for smaller dolls, like OT Obitsu fashion dolls, but I have never personally tried them myself (they are a bit expensive compared to "drug-store" eyelashes, and I might as well get what I find locally). Hope that helps! (:
