Casting to casters! Good place to buy resin?

Apr 9, 2007

    1. Ok, so I'm closing to casting my own doll, and I'd like to get some info on where and what kind of resin to get. I've been eyeing this place http://www.alumilite.com/ for white resin and dye, but has anyone bought resin from there? Is it suitable for casting dolls? How do I know what resin is good and ment for casting dolls? Is there a cheaper place with quality resin? Anyone know a good place to buy frenchresin? Any comments on Aluminite are appresiated, so are hints and recommendations of other good places. If there is a thread with info of this please leave a link. (I get really confused trying to go through all of them but I will continue it eventually).

I'd also love that you would tell me where you got your resin, how much did it cost and how is it like ^^ Thank you in advance!

    2. Polyurethane resin is what you want for casting dolls. Alumilite sells polyurethane resin, as does Smooth-On. I tried to do a poll comparing the two (specifically for pinhole bubbles, which I've had problems with) here, but I'm not convinced that the sample size is large enough to be significant.

For "french" resin, you'll need transparent resin, dye, and some sort of filler. Smooth-On has an "amber" semi-transparent resin that I'm planning on trying; "water clear" polyurethane resin is more toxic. There are a lot of options for fillers: The Complete Sculptor's list

I like The Complete Sculptor because they actually come pretty close to living up to their name. You can find their list of rigid polyurethane resins (i.e., the kind of thing you can use to cast a doll) here. They have both Smooth-On and Alumilite, as well as their own brand.
