Tiny Tiny or : the doll I keep forgetting about.

Aug 20, 2009

    1. UPDATE on page 5!

In celebration of having in my possession my very first pack of paperclay, I have decided to start a little Tiny BJD which body could hopefully be used as a body for my fairyland multiheads.

Sculpting heads being too fun, I naturally couldn't resist beginning one as well.

The little buddy is still in -very- early stages (sausages arms + legs, bwahhaa) and the face is super rough due to me not being used to air-drying clays and paperclay in general, hopefully i'll get better with time!

      Plans!

I'm sorry for the poor quality of the pictures, i'm afraid i'm not much of a photographer but I hope you can enjoy, comment and critique whatever you -can- see!

      Love!

    2. I've had time to sand this little doll a little yesterday, it's still not super smooth but it's a lot better!
I've also cut the torso in two.

The body also fits my fairyland multiheads, Joy!

    3. awwe, he... or she :? is adorable!
Hope to see more progress soon :)

    4. Very cute! Such a chubby little body ^__^ Good job so far!

    5. Awww is so cute ^^ i like specially the mouth area. Is hard to sculpt at that size with paperclay.
Hope to see more pics soon :)

    6. @Hemre : Thanks! I don't have any gender in mind for now and i'm not planning to sculpt any details that would make it a girl or a boy, so really, boy or girl, it doesn't matter!

@Stormslegacy : Thank you! I really wanted a chubby tiny, i'm happy it's visibly chubby!

@Runy : Thank you! The mouth was a pain to sculpt since I had a very specific idea of what I wanted, i'm happy people like it so far. Paperclay is a very interesting medium, I hope to work on bigger scaled projects with it someday.

      Quick little update!

The two-parts torso magically transformed into a 3 parts torso!

I was very surprised at how hard to cut dry paperclay is! Quite a struggle there.

    7. I see you cut the torso in 3 parts, i also did the same with mine, it gives more movement and is great for a chubby doll :D i cut it with water and a pin or a exacto knife, but for dry paperclay woodcarving tools are great.

    8. A tiiiny update to show that the body does fit my multiheads, YAY!
Plus i'm trying two different types of leg joints, a regular one and a 'T' shaped one, so far I like the 'T' one better.

    9. Oh! I never have seen a T shaped joint like that one (just J), i want to see more :D

    10. daww i just want to rub his/her tummy, it's darn cute.
I don't know how you guys work with paperclay it drives me nuts...
i'm liking this loads right now, i think it's great that the fairyland heads fit as well.
is he/she managing to sit well with your joints?

    11. Plenty of character in that adoreable little creature! I am a fan!

You did a great job on smoothing out the surface, too!

I tried working with paperclay and found it a very challenging, humbling experience. It seems like that stuff is hard to control, but when you get used to it it's actually not that bad, just takes patience.

    12. wow! gorgeous concept drawing (I am so envious of all of you who can draw out your ideas! so cool) and great sculpting. I really like the way this is going. Congratulations! very cool...

    13. No updates for right now, sorry!

Runy: I love the T joint so far, It allows the knees to be close together when the doll is sitting, it's also a kind of 'lock' system for keeping my little floppy (loooooosely strung) tiny sitting up! Thank you for your comments, they always make me smile! (P.S. I'm still incredibly jealous of your Tiny. O.M.G it's so brilliantly constructed.)

Maggs: Hi! Thank you! Yes, she is sitting up just fine even though she's strung suuuper losely for now and doesn't have lower legs and feets to add weight, as I explained to Runy, I use the 'T' shaped joint to lock her in this position, it works well.Paperclay works very well for me as I love sanding details rather than modelling them on with putty.

Blue Dot: Hi! I'm glad you like her, the body is coming along a lot better than any of my previous attempts. I'm using a children paperclay, seriously! It's flexible while drying and then suuper strong, I love working on it while it's in the flexible stage (Pearl Paperclay is the name). Thank God it sands wonderfully well though, because i'm terrible at getting a smooth finish while modelling!

patl Squeeling fangirl, right here. Your work has been an inspiration to me from the very beginning! My concept drawing was actually done in Illustrator (vector based) Each piece was drawn individually which allowed me to test the joints before sculpting. Of course I had to modify quite a lot of things but it gave me a good idea of where I was going with this.

    14. :blush truly honored that you've seen my folk!

husband and son use Illustrator (husband works for adobe) so I know i should learn to use it, but its like - i barely seem to have time to sculpt and learn to use a camera! there need to be so many more hours in the week to learn such cool things... and i would not have thought of creating each subsection separately and seeing how they work together - very cool - thank you for mentioning that...

      hope you post more soon....

    15. Uuuuppdaattee.

      Hello <3!

Patl Illustrator really helped me realise my ultra stylised joints would be absolutely useless. This technique might be more useful to amateurs like me than experienced dolls makers like you. Just saying!

      Okay I lied.
      Here's an update!

Today I reworked the torso to make all the parts more fluid, I wasn't a big fan of the 'cut' look, so there:

Next I worked on the legs, I WAS going to do a double joint, but decided to make this easier on poor, poor me. To answer Magg's question : Yes! She sits wonderfully without any support!

      Proof!

The tiny doesn't need to be bent foward to sit unsupported, but here's a cuter pic!

    16. Oh i'll say it again but i love that cute face of your tiny! :o
You sand/smooth very well, that paperclay looks resistent and now i see the T shaped joint :O post more pics soon ^_^

    17. It's looking so cute so far! That little mouth is just adorable!

    18. it's working out fantastically, i'm so damn impressed!

    19. I'd love to see your ultra-stylized joints.... I keep thinking that there are definitely other ways to do some of these things, and maybe if a lot of us got together and free-associated, or bounced ideas off of each other - we might come up with some cool possibilities......

love the new pics! how did you get such beautifully clean grooves in your wooden beads? mine always looked like they'd been chewed by broken toothed termites!

    20. Runy : The awesomeness of your tiny makes me want to perfect this tiny of mine! I love the face as well, it turned out better than I expected, joy! I'm surprised at how wonderful the paperclay sands! Maybe it's because it's using a 'cheap' 'student' paperclay? Hmmm.

Lady Thesta : The mouth was such a difficult part to sculpt, for a long, long while it was just two pieces of clay sticking out, ew!

Maggs Thank you! I'm hoding my breath because I've had no major set back in this project yet, it's just plain fun and relaxing!

Patl I'll scan my sketches when I can! About the wooden beads:

When I buy Beads, I make sure the hole in the middle follows the direction of the wood grain, that way, it takes very little pressure with a knife to split the wood. If i'm careful enough, i manage to split only one 'side' of the bead (it's not two separate parts) two parallel splits and I have my vertical slot, all bumps are sanded down with a nail file. Was that even understandable?

      LITTE UPDATE!

The head has finally been sanded 'smooth' (coughcough. yearight, "smooth")

And here's a shot of the leg with my somewhat fluid knee joint, it also locks.

I'm not a super fan of the shape, but i'll work on it as I go.

      Extra useless extra picture!

Thanks to you all for your support so far!:o

    21. Hey guys!

Today I made some quick homemade eyes for my tiny, they look a little wonky because I hand draw the irises, I think printing them out would make prettier results. Anyway! there you go :

they actually have super tiny clear domes, that was a PAIN to do. The technique's not OMG yet but i'm working on it!

    22. Holy smokes, your drawing is wonderful!

    23. rather OMG update!

      SHE STTTAAAANNNNNNDDSS!

      Proof!:

And she suwarrijslkjs that sitting position:

And yes, you can laugh at her tiny, unfinished feet.

      Whoot!

    24. Her foots are so cute ^^ is so wonderful when your doll stands, she is looking great!

    25. This doll gets cuter and cuter every time I see progress photos! And those feet!!!

When a doll you've worked on finally stands, I imagine, is a wonderful feeling. ^^

    26. Runy : Yes, I love them too, i'm almost sad to have to add toes!

Lady Thesta : That's so sweet, thank you! Yes, it was incredible seeing her stand like that, her balance is definitely not perfect but I keep working on it.

      Quick update!

I have decided to turn this regular Head+headcap head into a faceplate one.

      Here we go:

      Put together:

      The Base:

      And faceplate:

The concept seems to be working fine for now, Now I need to find the magnets I had bought months ago.... dear god.

I have also added some lenght to her legs and have shaped her arms so they're not tubes anymore, More on that later, when the parts are dry and sanded.

      Thank you!

    27. Much needed update!

Hey guys! I haven't updated in foooorever!

Alright so I've mainly been working on my tiny's balance and overall look( plus priming and sanding. SIGH!) but i've added some things I think are worth mentioning:

      1)Leg-hip joint

      What's going on :

I added some extra clay to create a visible lip all around the leg, the tiny lost absolutely no posability and gained a TON of stability, The lip also limits how far the legs can bend back, which was a big pain in the butt with trying to get her to stand unaided.

      2) Faceplate + hands and arms:

The faceplate system works wonderfully well with only two magnets (one set) The head can be shaken vigorously and the faceplate won't move at all, yays!

Also: New VERY HAPPY faceplate, and a glimpse of the hands

She also has arms, I'm thinking they're too fat, I might go very sandpaper happy on them.

    28. Great progress Ramaon! I love the two very different faceplates. And I love the last photo, so full of character. :o

    29. I like your progress too. You had the idea and then you planned. That's really hard to do, I have to say.
I will follow your project and I spect it to finish.

    30. Back From The Dead

      HI GUYS!

Bringing back this project from the depths of the forum!

I've actually worked quite a bit on this evil little thing but it doesn't show quite as much as I would like.

      What has changed :

      -BIG BELLY! eeeee x3
      -reshaped the mouth a little
-resculpted one arm (working on the other!)
-rethought the fit of all the joints.

      so here we go!

that one's just to show you how big the belly is when it is 'popped' out. (this was BEFORE the mouth was reshaped)

      And the new mouth!

    31. I like her new tummy! ^__^ and the cute happy faceplate too, is good to see more of your progress with this little fellah.

    32. In the first couple of pictures, the neck doesn't seem to be sitting in the head, the head looks more perched on.

Other than that, she's cute! And <3 your intuos.

    33. His little one is adorable!
Are you going to do mold to pass in resin?

    34. Nice! Is that gray stuff Primer?

    35. oooh subscribing to this thread! Your progress is amazing!!!! I love this tiny!!!! AMAZING!

    36. I think it’s about time I show this!

I have been working on this tiny thing for so long, with so many breaks in between working sessions! It’s insane. But he will be completed before the summer is over, as I am planning to cast him in resin.

My lovely friend Anasthasia, and owner of Anasthasia Workshop ( http://thewhiterabbitorder.blogspot.ca/ ) has been a lifesaver, giving me advices upon advices and critiques! As a professional bjd artist, her opinion is golden to me and I can’t believe how lucky I am to have such a lovely friend!

The tiny is roughly 6 inches tall, with 15 points of articulation and a faceplate system (oh so kindly explained to me by Ana!).
