Hi there! This is my first post (well, besides the introduction) - I hope it all went well. I would like to share some pictures of my BJDs with you - I sculpt them directly in porcelain clay. They have multiple joints (and they are getting more and more) and are in dollhouse scale. The mesuring tape next to them is in centimeters. The next picture shows the little sleeping baby dressed in a knitted outfit. Take care! Ela
Ela, these are wonderful - what in the world do you string them with? I can't imagine trying to sculpt those tiny fingers... Do you do adult sized ones too? thank you so much for posting them... I would love to be able to watch you sculpt - I am so clumsy, I can't imagine being able to sculpt this tiny....
Thank you so much for the compliments... You made me blush... @patl: I string them with "magic string", a sort of elastic nylon cord and I have a thin wire running down the joints to help keeping positions. And I find it very difficult to sculpt anything large - I actually think it's easier to sculpt in a smaller scale as you don't have so many details... @Bruny: It's about 10% shrinkage, the thing I really love about sculpting with porcelain. The details tend to get really crisp while shrinking.
I've never fired porcelain clay, that means that there is less shrinkage than with porcelain slip... that's really cool since porcelain slip tends to shrink at least 1/3 of the original size, but then you would have to use a mold. Looking forward to more of your cuties!
Oh, wow! I've sculpted a 5 inch tall doll, and sculpting facial features drove me nuts. That's amazing the detail you've put into these tiny dolls. Are you going to make more? I love looking at miniatures.
Wonderful! Their little faces are so lifelike! It is hard to imagine they are so tiny without the tape measure there beside them!
Wow! So well done. Can you tell me if sculpting in porcelain is similar to polymer clay? I almost purchased some air dry porcelain the other day, but didn't as I wasn't what to expect. Is the air dry result similar to the fired porcelain?
I don't think you get the same amount of shrinkage from air-dray clay. Porcelain clay shrinks when it's fired in a kiln and vitrifies, making it very strong and solid.
