This is... weird o.o

Jul 22, 2011

    1. Alright, so I was surfing this Chinese website where I usually get my dollie clothing off from, and I happened to see this:

      http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=...li_trackid=1_3caceab88877fc2203312f0acfa6c237

If you're not armed with Google Translate, never mind the Chinese stuff but apparently a luts KDF Cherry is going for just RMB 460 on the site? The shipping isn't expensive as well and the faceup is included too o.o

That's only approx 87 USD if I'm not wrong.

In short, I'm just confused -brain short fuses- unless it's a knockoff?
But at the bottom buyers of the item give good reviews and are happy with the doll.
      I need enlightenment D:

    2. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

    3. Yup, but they have lots of positive reviews o.o
And they even specify that these dolls won't cause respiratory harm etc typical of most fake dolls. (Of course you can't totally trust what they claim, but still...)
      :B

    4. This shop sells bootlegs :/
You see there's a Genji at 768rmb, and they mentioned about using imported Canada resin :)

    5. Yeah... I was like 'huh...?' at the prices.
      So they're recasts?

    6. I thought that was what rhapsodies already explained. :sweat And does it even really need to be said? How on earth could an authentic Volks Genji be (a) made of "Canada resin" or (b) sell for such a low price?

As for the glowing feedback--I imagine people who are in the market for fake BJDs *are* happy with these fakes. The feedback doesn't authenticate the dolls.

    7. Cynthia in FlintHills That's right, if you can't put in the time and effort to save up for a real BJD, then the hobby isn't for you.
I mean there are plenty of attractive and 'cheap' off-topic dolls that they could buy instead, I don't understand how somebody could want to be part of the BJD community so badly that they have to buy a re-cast because they can't afford a real one.

    8. At first you had me all excited thinking maybe it was a second-hand shop or something. However I clicked the link and was all "oh.. darn recasts."

Yeah, I imagine for a first-time buyer, these could look pretty convincing, but any Volks doll being made from Canadian resin is a huge red flag, as all the parts for Volks dolls are famously made in Japan. I'd just feel bad for someone who unknowingly bought a Volks doll from here and tried to ask Volks to repair it once it was damaged.

    9. Agreed.
Maybe people who want to experiment on dolls (modding and stuff) could purchase them...
But there may be health concerns since no-one knows what they're really made of and if it's safe.

    10. The thing is...NOBODY should be purchasing them. Even if the dolls are perfectly safe. Even if the buyer wants to modify an inexpensive piece of resin. Because this company is making money off of other people's hard work...they've stolen others' ideas and are making money off of it and that's morally pretty awful. Not to mention legally squicky in some parts of the world. That's why recasts and bootlegs aren't allowed on this forum.

Pretty sure this thread is going to be locked lol

    11. Yeah, the thread probably will be locked, but the site shop in question should atleast be noted as producing known recasts so that new buyers on this forum will atleast know to avoid this shop.

    12. Haha it's fine... sorry o3o
Yup, people need to be careful. It's quite sad if someone purchases a doll from there believing it's real only to know it's a bootleg later.

    13. but they use the official company pictures and even give the name of the company. if it wasn't from the price I would have thouhgt this shop was simply a dealer

    14. Those are obviously knock-offs! They are indeed recasts of the original dolls!
I was almost fooled at first but something so cheap is very fishy to me...
Though I think it's a good thing to buy if you are going to use it as a practice head/body, though it's just my opinion :3

    15. no it's not! we shouldn't buy from them because it would encourage them! if you want a doll for practice get a bobobie or damaged dolls for cheap on the MP

    16. Yeah, sorry, but even if I wanted to saw the thing in half I wouldn't touch that with a bargepole. God alone knows what in that resin, they can say it's safe all they like, but thus far, we've established that they've been guilty of recasting, selling bootlegs, theiving company photo's to use as a selling aid and presumably we can also add passing them off as the real thing to the list because I sincerely doubt they give a monkeys what the buyers believed as long as they got paid.

Do those of you who think these are good for us poor modders as "practise dolls/bodies" REALLY think that these idiots can be trusted on their claim that it's an entirely safe resin blend, based on all we already know? Please.

There are times this forum properly tests my faith in humanity.

    17. Can this be posted somewhere here such that other people would not mistake them for authentic sculpts?
Because of the price, there are some who have already bought from them (not from here I think, just general people)
Not only is it copying from legit companies, but newbies especially may think that they are the real deal.
Also, what if the substance that they are made of is not safe?

    18. Taobao and eBay are auction sites where anyone can sell almost anything; there are legitimate and fake dolls for sale on both Taobao and eBay. Your biggest protection against potential scams is research - it's always important to be aware that if something is selling at an unbelieveably low price, it is highly likely to be an illegal recast doll and by buying from these people, you are legitimising their business and helping them steal research and development money from those who deserve it most - the amazing artists who sculpt these dolls for us to admire and enjoy.

Research, research, research. There is no such thing as a cheap BJD. There is more information on worrying trends with active illegal doll bootleggers here.

It is not alright to buy fake dolls for face-up practice or modification practice. It is not alright to recast a doll you already own to try to modify. Regardless of whether the resin is high quality or not, these dolls are illegal and are banned on Den of Angels.

As official company photos are being used to sell these illegal dolls, I strongly suggest that the relevant companies should be informed of the situation and if there is a report feature on Taobao to alert them about counterfeit goods, I strongly suggest that is used also.
