Like that old saying “Water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink” sometimes what you can have isn’t what you want or need. In this apparent sea of readily available offerings from worldwide stores and crafts people what doll parts or clothing, wigs, eyes, etc do you rather frustratingly never seem to find? Has it led to you giving up on a doll and selling them on because you feel you cannot complete them? A couple of times it has for me. Personally I really struggle to find particular styles of clothing especially for tinies. For example I like that sort of gothic shabby chic style you see a lot for Blythe dolls but seldom if ever for BJDs. I’m also getting frustrated trying to find a plain long black coat for one of my SD boys. He needs something to skulk around in. Everything is too ‘clean’, wrong fabric or too stylish. Eyes are another thing…..there are loads around from cheap acrylic to exquisitely made custom pieces of art and yet I’ve still to see a pair that make me think..”yes, that’s it!” I have had custom pairs made but there are very particular eyes I want that constantly elude me.
My dolls pick their own identities, so I don't usually run into this issue. "Usually" is the operative word in that sentence. I have a doll that decided that she's a horse girl, very American country western. It is nigh impossible to find pieces that fit into that particular niche in the BJD sphere! It's incredibly frustrating. Almost everything out there feels like the fabric is too flimsy/distressed, the style is too "cottagecore" and not enough "mucks horse stalls," or outright doesn't exist (sobs in cowboy boots). I don't have plans to sell Marcie at this point, but I imagine that if I did, it would be because she can't come together the way I want/need her to.
I have spent over a year looking for the right shade of not-quite-redhead. I want a wig in a specific style that straddles the color line between light brown and redhead, and it just does not seem to exist.
I try not to give my characters solid appearance ideas because I want to let the doll shape it. The battle is too hard so I'm choosing to avoid it. Whatever looks best on the doll is added to the character. Hairstyle, hair color, and eye color really don't have effect someone's personality anyway. Plus they can all be modified on a human, so why not a doll?
I've given up looking for most things. I drew a lot of clothes I want for my dolls and im taking most of december off work just to sew (I have nothing else to do) as I too was considering selling off dolls just because nothing I want exists. I may even make this an annual thing.
I make stuff. So if I can't find it sooner or later I kick my butt into making it. it just... is never sooner. eheheh.
I often don't buy the full set version of a doll thinking, "Oh, I can recreate that same look with my wigs, clothes and shoes I already have. I'm sure I can find a ( hat, coat, etc.) just like theirs on Etsy!" Then I go mad trying to recreate the outfit I should have just bought with the full set. Usually I end spending almost as much as if I had just bought the full set in the first place! Once in a while it all comes together for the doll, but usually I'm just missing one thing to finish the vision! So frustrating!
I’m with you on the long black coat… I have two of my own that I would love to find something similar to in dolly size but I have been unable to find anything even remotely similar except in like 60cm size which is much too small for any of my guys :’( I guess I could try and make one maybe but I don’t have much time to sew these days
Plenty of wigs out there and I never like any of them I always end up resorting to making my own to get the colour and length I want (both never exist at the same time). Also with you @Blodeuwedd about Blythe stuff not getting made in bjd sizes - they have so many cool shoes that I'd love to have but... bigger
I hate that I cannot sew for the life of me. All of my dolls are extremely uniquely sized, so finding them premade clothes is a total pain. Nothing from aliexpress fits, and nothing from alice's collections or the other usual dealers fits, either. The company website has expensive clothes that aren't really the styles I want for my characters usually. It's been frustrating, but I deal with it. Oh what I wouldn't give to have a bunch of minifees because that's what everyone makes clothes for xD
I've always knew I was making all my BJD's clothes, because I knew I am a weirdo since birth (I suck at sewing, though!). I soon discovered I love unpopular things, these dolls included. So, I had to tackle making wigs, earlier within tge arrival of my fist few BJD. I recently got a mature-ish tiny, so finding eyes for him has been loads of fun. More so because small iris 8-9mm glass eyes are like a drop of ice cold water in the midfle of the desert. I am not a fan of resin, more so eyes, so, fun times all around. Shoes, are another near impossible not available anywhere accessory I had given up buying for my larger dolls, a long time ago (due to personal life style choices). I haven't completely given up finding some for my tiny, but I feel it's only a matter of time before I have to seriously make those myself, as well. Or force my barefoot, grumpy tiny dude, to go on living shoeless forever! I'm sure there is a doll/figure shoe size out there that might fit, but I want traditional manly shoes for him, not feminine female high heels, which probably is more likely all I'll find in his size. I want black combat boots, and plain male dress shoes for him. T__T;;;
The thing I struggle to find is clothes in yosd and 1/8 size, I see the style I want in 1/4 a lot. I think it’s even more frustrating when you do find exactly what you want but it is difficult to get due to availability, wait time, or location.
Finding wigs for tinies is the thing that drives me crazy. Almost all the wigs in their size have way too much hair. The wigs are cute and look cute on the dolls but don't look "real" at all. I've never seen a real child with the masses of hair these wigs have. There are several tinies I'd love to add to my collection but won't because finding a wig for them is just too frustrating.
I feel this so often. Sometimes it's the clothes, I might really like a particular outfit but it is so hard to find it in the right size, especially for my 70+cm guys where it seems every single one of them comes in a different size or shape. Or something about the outfit is wrong, the cut of the pants, the material. I can sew, but I just don't feel as if my sewing looks polished enough to pull off some of the looks that I want for my dolls. Wigs too! I'll have in my mind this exact look that I want, but trying to find the right size, style and colour that is going to look good on my doll feels impossible sometimes. It took me forever to find the right shade of red for my Soom boy and while the wig is the right colour and I styled it how I want it, I still feel as if I need a to keep looking, because it doesn't fit him quite right. Sometimes it's a doll I go crazy looking for. I know the features that want for a specific character, but I either can't find them all on a single doll, or the doll I do find is either discontinued or hard to get. I've gotten a lot picker about my dolls so it takes me longer now to find the right ones. I used to settle for 'it's close enough' but I want it how I pictured it now, whether it's clothing for them, their wigs, or even the dolls themselves, it's seems that finding the visions in my head out in the real world is a difficult task.
Skirts for slim MSD. So many on the market, yet so few in the style I want! (Midi length, vintage chic)
I've always been a little interested in seeing a conjoined twin doll with cute faces, but it seems really rare and I'm not sure it exists. DC has something like that, but they're facing each other instead of shoulder-to-shoulder...
Basic clothes for super big boys like my SD boy are expensive as heck from what I can tell and the fancier you get the worse it gets. Dressing girls is ever so much easier. When I started with BJDs I could afford more new stuff and stuff was just way cheaper. Like everything else the price of BJD related stuff has risen a lot the last few years. I usually just sew most of it myself and buy the stuff I can't make easily like wigs and eyes but lately I'm having health issues that are making doing that difficult unfortunately.
Oh yeah, such a pain! My absolute favorite boy who is spoiled beyond words (like literally, I just bought him a seventh alternate head...) doesn't have the "right" wig. I cannot find what I want. It should be so simple, but it's impossible. Dark brown, wavy or curly, center part, layered a little bit, shoulder length. Sounds simple, right? No. It seems like every brown wig is reddish, almost blond or just off. Every wavy looks crimped or has huge wild waves. Every curly wig has big rolled curls or super thick curls. Everything is too thick! I want his hair to lay realistically, not puff out. Center part should be easy, but so many again are too puffy at the top, or show wefts. Too many wefts! I've cut half the wefts out of a wig and it's still too thick. And the layers never lay like I want them to if they exist at all, and everything is either way too long or way too short. And I suck at cutting it myself. On top of that, I don't do animal fibers, so I need synthetic mohair. I have a similar issue with my other favorite boy, but I've found something that works pretty well currently, but it's not great quality, so I expect it to need replacing before long. But in his case, I really need him to be a tan Migidoll Siho head on a Luts Senior Delf body. The resin match is decent, but I've never seen a tan Siho and Migidoll never seems to have Siho available anymore. So Bren's stuck being NS for now. Finding clothes for him can be hard too- I want him to have a collection of goth jackets, tailored to him so they don't look sloppy. I'm not even *that* picky, but finding brocade and velvet thigh length jackets is hard!
You and I have always had a similar aesthetic in dolls. Back in the day a couple of mine I think came from you so I get it your frustration. Lately every outfit I like is $200. I'm just like "Yeah, okay..." The rest of it is really childish looking stuff that there is no way I'm putting on my big dolls. Every once in a while I like a goth leaning Lolita outfit on my minis but never on the larger dolls and finding stuff that fits my favorite looks that doesn't cost as much as the used doll did is getting very hard. I get it when it's a handmade OOAK outfit that is very complex but when every simple mass produced outfit coming from China or wherever is priced like that it gets a little frustrating. These days looking on the resale market for stuff I like for my SD dolls is an exercise in frustration. Every used shirt or pair of pants is $20 and up and even used wigs and eyes and shoes people want pretty much what they paid new or they're just sellers selling new stuff as used. Etsy in particular it used to be a great place to find reasonably priced basic clothing that people actually made. Every single cool seller that I used to buy basic but very cute clothes from is gone and all the supposedly hand crafted stuff is now being shipped from overseas and is definitely NOT limited, made by crafters stuff. It's the same stuff on eBay, AliExpress etc. I went away from doll collecting for six years and everything went mass produced and pricey and frankly most of it is pretty boring besides... I don't spend $200 on an outfit for me. I don't shop dept store prices. I certainly won't spend that on outfitting a doll. That rich I am NOT. :P
Oh Lordy do I know this one and agree wholeheartedly! Thank all for your comments and it’s interesting how many are very similar. It seems that the basics are sadly lacking for all sizes. That’s what I find anyway, timeless and classic basics whether it’s wig styles and colours or coats, skirts, jeans or shoes, etc. Pieces that can be mixed and matched, pieces that span fashion categories and eras such as the skirt mentioned by @babezoid or the wig and gothic coat @CloakedSchemer wants. Even finding a decent sloppy or hippyish jumper is surprisingly hard, heck casual boho clothing full stop for any size or gender of doll is very difficult to find. An example of a flexible basic would be let’s say a brown wool or even velvet waistcoat. Now that could be teamed up with a stylish suit, worn with a t-shirt and jeans for a casual look, teamed up with a poet shirt and tight brownish trousers and riding boots for a more 18th/early 19th century outfit or worn with cropped loose trousers/pants, a simple collarless shirt and oversized jacket for a Hobbit style getup. That’s the kind of things I’d like to see more of. I also understand that many make things themselves out of that frustration, I keep telling myself I need to learn to do so myself but I’m the queen of procrastination, something I now realise is partially if not completely due to my newly diagnosed neurodiversity and the need for instant perfection that comes with it, going to have to do something though.
Finding futuristic cyberpunk inspired clothes and accessories are hard to come find, particularly for the females. They’re not into the sexy look so I craft and sew. It’s a slow process since I have to design, test, make, remake and refine.
I come from a "poor-people's fashion doll' background *cough* playline Barbies *cough* so my original intention was always to make my own clothes for my dolls. It was nearly 12 years ago, and at that time fur wigs were a thing (before the alpaca and soy kicked off), so I was able to make clothes and fur wigs. But soon I discovered that e.g. suit tops and shirts are best purchased, because I lack skills and equipment (Okay, right now I'm in the process of designing a shirt, but it's simply because I have a lovely piece of fabric and I cannot let it go!). So I was always into buying some basics e.g. black/blue denims, simple underwear, and white/black suit shirts, as well as belts and ties. I recently purchased a simple suit for one of my boys, but it still needs adjustments, I guess. Anyway, I honestly resigned from every other side for the sake of my SDs (classic 58cm girls and 62cm boy), so that I wouldn't have to bother trying to find some special fashions. I generally make 99% of all their clothes by myself anyway, but I also dislike struggling with having to find specially-sized items. I've learnt that rather than deal with frustration, I'd prefer to just resell the doll/head/body. I've done it several times, never missed it. I'm lucky that all the dolls I like are super popular (or, rather, used to be and have been my grails since I jointed the hobby in 2013) and easy/idiot-proof. I've had to have my share of atypical dolls first, however, to appreciate the peace of mind attitude to collecting nowadays lol
- oh yes, nowadays it's mostly companies that advertise on ETSY, individual sellers are practically gone. :/ For me - proportionally sized eyes. Not many companies offer these, unfortunately. Additionally, I am dying for a clearly Asian looking girl, with boys it's a bit easier, but girls always_have_those_overly_big_European_eyes... and I want a girl that I can turn into Asian character of mine... :/ Yuxiu from DF-A is that rare example, and of course she's on my list. But other than that - it's hard.
