The ^ < v Game! - Part 4

^ I have done some small subtractive things (bevelling out a neck opening, separating lots more fingers than I was planning to), some restoration and wrinkly nose things and one of my girls got elf ears. Her BFF still needs hers - maybe this weekend. Technically the hobbits would need different ears, but their curly wigs will keep them hidden anyway so it's kind of not worth it.

v Passing on the question - have you ever modded a doll, and/or are you planning to?

 

^ yep. I'm going to do an FTM mod to make a short, curvy male body. (F60 body) for a character who's androgynous.

V how detailed are your dolls' backstories?

 

^ Incredibly. I couldn't chill out with my character designing if I tried, so they're all detailed and intertwined and could easily be novel length...if I ever bothered to write them down. I just keep thinking and designing and adding stuff and they all just kind of take on a life of their own... And by the time I get a story kind of at a place where it's "done," there are so many characters and stories that getting it written down seems so daunting!

< Ug. I hate waking up earlier than I have to.

v Are you working on any characters right now? Who's your main focus, and what are they like?

 

^ working on characters.... well, I've had to completely redo Tacet's character since a little timeline edit. Tacet is an interesting one, because she's just a hurt child who wants love and security but is also capable of great violence. She has these tantrums where she'll just do anything she can to hurt someone, and can be exceptionally possessive. She has a severely deformed moral compass passed down from her abusive father, which makes her able to expect love out of the demigod she has trapped in her closet. It's almost reminiscent of Kilgrave in Jessica Jones, where he expects her love even though he's done all these horrible things that he doesn't understand are horrible. She ultimately winds up happy with one of my stronger female characters, After her father is killed. Really, she needed someone she couldnt manipulate to show her what's right. She is my shortest doll currently, being an f60 moeline with pink hair and a pastel goth style. (I currently have 131 500 words in her story)

Vwho is the next doll character you plan to shell?

 

^ My dragon shifter. He got on the wrong side of a wizard and was cursed to lose his dragon form. He has to remain in his human form but his brain is different and all knowledge of his hoard is lost to him. He is desperately searching for someone to remove the curse. He will be shelled soon as his head is on the way (Granado V-08). He is bi polar because of his situation.

v are your characters fantasy, real or a mixture?

 

^ By now I'm surrounded by a merry mix. I was planning to stick to real world of sorts, but ... yeah. Didn't go so well. For one thing because I grew tired of the same real world stuff over and over, for another because discontinuations happened and Calien just snuck her way in pretending to be the shell of someone else until she was safely on layaway before kindly informing me she was an elf. I'm still determined to get everyone from my main story shelled, but I have some side projects (the band as another real world one, two separate fantasy ones and the hobbits) going on and getting quite as much attention as the rest, given the fact the main story is mostly waiting for companies to come up with a sculpt for the last missing cast member. Plus there's always the chance of more Trek dolls happening, although I try to keep them barbie sized (OT Obitsus and the like).

< need to do doll stuff but can't focus. At all. I feel like a chore zombie. *shuffles around randomly cleaning things*

v Has your collection turned out the way you expected it to when you got in the hobby?

 

^ Yes and no. I expected to have a small group of my long time OCs when I started. Currently, I have a fairly large group of OCs, another good-sized group of character dolls (something I said I'd never have), a group of thinly characterized "just dolls" (a thing I never thought I'd do), and a few smaller groups.

< it's a good thing I have a standing desk or I may have fallen asleep by now...

v What were your expectations before you got your first doll? How does that compare to your reality after being in the hobby for a while?

 

^ Honestly, I don't even know if I had that many expectations before I got my first doll. He was 65cm and he was actually a lot smaller than I imagined, even though I knew how long/tall 65cm is, and he certainly wasn't as much fun to play with as I'd expected. I think my biggest expectations were about the community. I was "in the hobby" three years before I managed to join DoA or even chat online with another collector, and I think I believed the community would be this magical place where we'd all be friends and have a lovely time chatting about dolls. I have no idea why I thought that, considering no community on this planet (online or otherwise) is like that. What I've really learned is that the hobby is my own personal 'Hotel California'. I may have entered it of my own free will, but even though I've now mostly 'checked out' I feel like I can still never truly leave.

< potato bread is love. Also, I need to go to the fabric store while the good sale is still on, but my friend wants to go drinking after work. Choices...

V Do you have any regrets related to the hobby.

 

^ My only regret is that I had a clothing commission that went terribly. In retrospect I wish I'd been more assertive about what I wanted. Other than that, though, I've done pretty well.

< I love working from home. I wish I could do it all the time.

V What are your current doll plans?

 

^ Lessee... Buy my new boy and girl bodies, get said boy eyes and a wig, finish making my other boy and my girl their wigs, make clothes, make/buy shoes, do their faceups, and get a camera for photoshoots. Whew!

v I like this, so what are your current doll plans?

 

^ At the moment, I'm planning on restringing Christian because he is *floppy* like a rag doll. Which means that I'm thinking hard about giving him more tattoos while he's all taken apart. Then I'll probably make him a new pair of jeans and maybe a new shirt? Because he's awesome and deserves it.

< And there I go, plotting on sculpting a dog. Because Grunt is an awesome dog and weird and I want my dolls to have a weird awesome dog too.

v Do you have any resin pets for your dolls?

 

^ No. I don't have any pets but I would love to get a resin dog one day.

v How do you display your dolls?

 

^ They just sit on my desk, mostly. I'd like to make a bedroom diorama for Aelic though! Because the desk is running out of space...

v Does your doll/character have any embarrassing (but not harmful) secrets? (Like enjoying kid shows even though they're an adult...)

 

^ I have seven hundred+ year old scientist, philosopher, scholar, alchemist who is obsessed with various gaming platform RPGs. When caught in the act, he justifies it with great intellectual dignity...and pretends not to notice that others nod seriously while struggling to keep a straight face.

< Go change the nectar in the hummingbird feeder. The weather is getting warmer and they will arrive eventually...expecting fresh food. Nothing scarier than an angry hummingbird!

v Have you ever ordered a doll, waited for months in eager anticipation...and then desperately tried to convince yourself that it was everything you dreamed of when, well, it pretty much wasn't?

 

^ Yes, all the time, actually. A lot of dolls I've purchased in the last couple of years have been disappointing to varying degrees. My most notable disappointment, though, was a Dollshe Grant Philippe which I waited a couple weeks short of a year for. Dollshe is overrated and stupidly overpriced in my opinion, and that doll was absolutely 100% NOT worth the wait. I put him up for sale two days after I got him and sold him less than two weeks later.

< bleh... I agreed to a social engagement that I really didn't want to do, but the person caught me off-guard. ugh. Why?!

V What's the longest time you've ever waited for a doll?

 

> A month, I think? I've only ever bought secondhand or heads and I'm not sure how I will handle eventually buying a body straight from the company.

v What dolly thing have you been putting off?

 

^ Ilya's wig. I really want it and can afford it, but it's gonna take so long to have done... But waiting to order it is just gonna make it take longer. And once he has that and his eyes...he's gonna be sooooo cool.

v If someone close to you bought you a doll as a present but you really didn't like it, what would you do?

 

^ I'd mod the son of a biscuit until I adored it. If the mods fail, I've got a lot of practice out of it. If they work, I've got a lot of bonding. Either way it's something good and it gives me something to do.

< This song has been stuck in my head all week and I only heard it once...how?

V What's your dolls favourite song?

 

^ Audrey's would be "Success" by Iggy Pop. The call-and-response bit at the end delights her to no end. Christian is a tremendous Bob Dylan fan, and "Tangled Up in Blue" is probably his favorite. And that's as far as I'll go with my bunch, because I have too many dolls to go through. ^^;

v This has the potential for interesting responses, so I will pass it down: What's your dolls favourite song?

 

Reid's is When I See You Smile by Bad English (actually, it's his and Fiona's special song). Noé's is Bad Medicine by Bon Jovi. Tyler is a musician and he has a lot of "favourite" songs that tend to change with his mood, but he always enjoys songs from musicals and he particularly likes Some Enchanted Evening from South Pacific.

V Do any of your character/doll couples have a song that is 'their song'?

 

^ Azrael and Miracle would both have different ideas of what this song would be. One big one for them is Pray for Me by Sixx AM (kind of fitting given that they're an angel and an addict). Another big one is Believe by Staind, which is kind of his feelings for her (believe in me, sometimes the weak become the strong.) her song for him... hmm...Broken by Seether (the Amy Lee version). So I guess they kind of have three songs.

V what's your next doll related plan?

 

^ My list for today: Remove Poppy's rollers to finish her wig; sort out the patterns for The Sewing Project's current round; get some work done on Folco's shirt (an hopefully finish it). Hopefully decide on a style for Jaziel's wig and get that started at the very least.

< Dolly playlist! I want one. (And why does the boy cat always come back without his collar in time for a bank holiday, when I can't replace it? Guess who's staying inside today.)

v If you had a day to work on doll stuff only, what would you do? (Story-writing absolutely counts!)

 

^ i would definitely work on outfits!
E.g. Sewing dresses and stuff bc it is so much fun

^ Male. Now most my dolls are male anyway

^ Making a new doll into the character I bought them for (and spamming the forum with pics along the way). Getting them ready - making their clothes, wigs, faceups. To me, that's the most exciting part.

v Same question! What is your favorite part of the hobby?

 

^ Oh gosh, I really love doing face-ups and I really love doing photography. Those are my two favorites, but I also love prop-making and sewing and knitting. And story-telling. Right, so I sound completely short-attention span.

v Since gift-giving is on my brain this morning, what would your doll consider to be a very good sort of a gift?

 

^ For Ilya: food. He's a foodie to the nth degree, and will eat basically everything. (He particularly enjoys hamburgers and very pungent fish. Put them together and he'd probably just die of happiness.) So a gift card to a burger joint would make his day. If you're looking for something a little more high end, the only clothes he goes crazy about are soccer shoes, so get the pair of those he's been lusting after and he'd probably worship the ground you walked on for a while.

For Aelic: books. Especially old and rare ones. He looooooves books, and even has a special case for the rarest/oldest/most fragile in his collection. He doesn't even care about genre (though very old technical books, like stuff about biology or engineering make him go wild).

< I never did get the stuff for Aelic's bed... This is what happens when I have to order online. Bleh.

v Your doll/character is having a terrible time sleeping. How do they deal with it/pass the time?

 

^ Elliot never gets enough sleep. He is always staying up reading or browsing. And he has a bad habit of clicking things that scare him into staying up longer. I am going to redo his faceup with bags under his eyes, but for now there is just a little colored pencil scribbled under there.

Ollie might dance, or exercise, or snack, or watch a movie. If it gets really bad, she'll wake someone up to share in the insomnia with her. Probably Elliot.

Ji-Han would read a book, or make something to eat. And by make something, I mean an elaborate meal/desert. He would be careful not to make noise though. He might also do a bit of exercise or meditation.

v Let's do the opposite. Your doll is struggling to stay awake. What do they do to help them?

 

^ Tyler would drink coffee...lots and lots of coffee (as if he needs an excuse to drink lots of coffee lol). Noé would probably go for coffee too, or energy drinks. Reid would exercise. Aubrey wouldn't even try to keep himself awake and would retire for a nap.

< today would be a great day to be outside, but unfortunately I'm stuck at work. Why isn't it Saturday? But at least I actually like my new job, which is far more than I can say for my last one.

V What is your doll character's occupation? Do they like their job?

 

^ Katie is studying to be a professional musician. She likes it a lot, even though it means lots of practising; it's also the only thing she can stay focused on for a significant amount of time. (She'll probably end up teaching, though, most musicians these days do. Not enough orchestras to accomodate all of us. But she's good with kids so I guess she'll be fine.)

< drat. Where has my DS9 box got to? I need that episode for research purposes ...

v If you could create any doll at all (weird species, rare colour, different size ...), what would it be?

 

^ Right now, probably a perfect shell for Eiichi...because I complain about him all the time. He's got six arms, four big horns, tusks, and deep red skin, and I can't even find a head sculpt that works for him. I'd really like to have him one day, because he's Toshi's best friend, and I already have Toshi and would like to complete all the dolls for that storyline one day. It seems kind of doubtful right now though. (Honestly, I'm more worried about finding a head sculpt than doing the mods at this point. Why do no MSDs have any expression???)

v Your doll/character somehow gets stranded in the wilderness! Would they be able to survive?

 

^ Good question. Icy is a wheelchair user, but she is not paralyzed - simply walking would be an ordeal for her but she knows how to handle pain. On the other hand, she went through a real military campaign and knows a thing or two about survival. Her temper might have softened a bit after injury but she's still got the same steel will and endurance. She'll do everything possible, no matter how tough and painful it is, and even a bit more to get out of the situation alive. She wouldn't want to upset her family by getting lost forever after all.

< Honey has such a lovely colour. I fancy a honey-coloured wig or clothes. Or a skintone.

v If your doll character were to wake up from a nightmare in tears, what would this dream be about? Is there anyone or anything that could comfort them afterwards?

 

^ Elliot's nightmares are of him being thrown away or rejected. He has abandonment issues. And the person to comfort him afterwards is always Ollie. She usually acts silly, but she is good at helping him with emotional issues.

v What doll have you had the longest?

 

^ This guy!

It will be 12 years this summer!! Technically my Isao has been here longer by a few months, but he was a floating head for a very long time.

v Is there a necessary doll maintenance activity that causes you to feel unnecessary guilt at the indignity that you're putting your doll through? ^^;

NOPE. Dolls are dolls and if they need cleaning or stringing I blame it on them anyway so it's their own faults. So there.

V What inspires you in the BJD hobby?

 

^ The dolls themselves, I guess. I constantly create characters around dolls, and dolls around my characters, and it all just turns into a big mess of characters and shelling and craziness. I have...too much inspiration.

v If you doll/character was to star in a hit film, what genre would they want to be a part of?

 

Ash and Evz want to be in a Star Trek movie. Sit at cons and sign autographs and do silly things for the fans.

v Where does you character go for some time alone?

 

^ Icy likes to visit an old memorial for ones that perished in all wars across the world and centuries. It's a quiet sorrowful place, and she likes to sit and think and silence nearby. The atmosphere strangely calms her down. It still hurts to remember military days and camrades, but such visits seem to give her strength sometimes.

< I might be in a position when my RS doll arrives later than Dollshe one. Feels... odd.

v Imagine your doll character to wake up in a completely different universe and being told they have to become a hero and save this world. Are they scared or excited? What will they do? Will they help?

 

^ Ilya would be thrilled. His people are warriors and kind of fierce by nature, and he's compassionate to a fault, so he'd jump right in and help any way he could. Plus he has a very tactical mind, so he'd be great, honestly. He can be reckless though. Aelic and Toshi are much the same way; later in his life, Aelic becomes an accomplished magic user, and he's even more tactically intelligent than Ilya, so he'd do fine. He'd really want Nimbus to be there with him though, and might second-guess himself a lot if he's forced to do things on his own. Toshi is a skilled sword-wielder, so fighting would be no problem for him. He is, once again, tactically intelligent and controls powerful magic, so he'd be fine too. Honestly, most of my characters end up saving their respective worlds in their storylines, sooooooo...

(I swear all my characters aren't exactly the same... These are just the ones I happen to have shelled. )

< Tiiiiiime for more Beyblade Burst. It's just too good, I don't care if all the merch is labeled "for ages 6-8."

v Your doll/character finds a show on Netflix they really like! How do they enjoy it? (In a binge, one episode a night, with friends, alone in a dark room with three gallons of ice cream...etc.)

 

^ when Rina discovers a protagonist she relates to, she binges the show for as long as she can. Jessica Jones is that show for her. She watches it over the course of a night, because her and Jessica both have something of a martyr complex. It also makes her stronger in her desire to save Balik when she watched a certain character die, close to the end.

V what's your doll's favourite show?

 

^ There's actually a fave show that the whole family is crazy about. It's an extremely long, extremely silly TV series with tons of characters, full of pairings, zomg teh drama and emotional moments that lack logic altogether. I never got to specify what real life show this resembles but I'm sure there's something similar >D Icy kind of feels she's too serious and intelligent to enjoy it... but she can't help it anyway. It's all about watching it together with a family under one huge blanket with a bowl of sweets. Arguing over theories, shipping favourite characters, crying over drama... TV series are all about bonding!
Oh, and her fave character is an army officer of course, just like Icy used to be herself. She does feel for this guy a lot.

v What was your doll character's biggest childhood dream? Did it come true?

 

^ John has few actual clear memories of childhood, but he planned on going to school to be a computer engineer....and then dropped out at 14.....so no.

V Passing it on - What was your doll character's biggest childhood dream? Did it come true?

 

^ Aelic originally wanted to be an entertainer of some sort, but ended up training to be a librarian and book conservationist... So his childhood dream did not really come true. Toshi's childhood dream was to escape his family's shadow, and he achieved that by being an astral projector and traveling to other realms so...good job, Toshi!

Ilya is a bit weird, because he didn't really have a childhood dream when he was actually a child; in the selkie society he grew up in, you just...were a selkie? There aren't really any professions, because everyone kind of does everything, and it's very communal. But once Ilya moved in with his human family at around 12, he discovered that he reeaaaaally wanted to be a professional soccer player. And he succeeded! Yay!

< Ug, work sucked today. Sick + work = mini pizzas at midnight.

v Do you have multiple dolls for one character? (At different ages, different sizes, different stages of life, etc.) If not, would you ever want to?

 

^ I don't, but I sort of want to. For one I'd love a second head to mod as sleeping face, and I'd also like a teenage version of her. But then I'd need her best friend / sister-by-choice in teen form too and I don't see that happening any time soon.

^ Well, more like doll heads, but:



That's Ollie, an Island Doll Sparkle in dark tan, and Ji-Han, a LLT Red Dove in white skin. She is going to have white hair, and he is going to have black, which will make the contrast even higher.

v What doll you wish you could have, but would probably take a miracle to get?

 

^ Miracledoll Vic. I've been searching for him but I can't find him anywhere. It's too bad, he'd be the perfect head for my character but oh well I guess.

v How clean does your doll keep their room?

 

^ Aelic is generally pretty organized, so his room is usually neat and tidy, except maybe his work desk that's always covered in either school work or book restoration projects. Ilya's room is surprisingly clean as well, because he's rarely in there except to sleep. (Don't look in his closet though.)

< *stares pointedly at my want to buy thread* Aileen Doll Cedric, pleeaaaaase pop up somewhere... So cuuuuteeeee...

v Someone reveals your doll/character's most embarrassing secret! How do they react?

 

^ Millie is wearing a dress without any underpants underneath. She is pouting and a bit upset at me, since her bum is too big for the ones I made for her, and I haven't made her new ones yet.

< "It's so nice out I'd like to go for a walk. I wonder what the people are doing at the local doll meet today. Which of these two things should I spend my money on?"

v Would you ever bring your doll on vacation with you?

 

^not With my family... I might bring Tacet on trips with my girlfriend, but the family doesn't yet understand... they'd think it a little... eccentric if me..

V which of your doll characters is the most misunderstood

 

^ Hmm... I guess out of the dolls I have now it'd be Ilya, only because people misjudge his sort of airheaded personality and assume he's stupid, when he's actually very discerning. He just likes being happy. Really though, most of my characters are pretty straightforward with people they know, so none are super misunderstood. Except maybe Gunnar and Aloyscius, but that's just because 1) Gunnar is too lazy to talk about himself and 2) Aloyscius just looks mysterious. (He's absolutely not mysterious.)

< Whelp, I guess it's time to make a Kensuke cosplay for Aelic. So much green fabric... Hopefully it won't make me want to shell Kensuke, 'cause I don't need any more dolls on my wishlist.

v What's the most expensive doll accessory (clothing, props, furniture, etc.) you've ever bought? Was it worth it?

 

^ Probably the pair of Luts Schahriar outfits (which I bought because there was a "matched set" of them, so I do count them as one item). They're totally gorgeous, and I love how they look on the boys I bought them for, so I completely consider them worth it. Even though I constantly curse my luck that literally days after the GO for each of them was placed, they went on sale.

< I have such a horrible headache right now, I really should be in bed and not at the computer...

v Does your doll prefer simple or elaborate clothing?

 

^ Simple. Elaborate anything drives me insane and i can't deal with it....so neither can they.

V Do you have a favorite doll? Do you own your favorite doll?

 

^ My favorite sculpt ever is DZ Carter, and yes I do! I just adore Carter's face and teefs, so of course I had to have one. And now he's Ilya, and Ilya is my baby. (I can't say he's my favorite of all the dolls I own though, 'cause I love all my dolls equally. They're so different, I can't compare them!)

< Eee~! I just got my first Ruruko boy and I'm gonna be screaming about it all over the world. He's too precious!

v Your doll/character has to leave home for a month by themselves. Are they excited or upset? How do they deal with being away?

 

^ Kit ( Luts Model Delf Leo ) would be excited. His motto is "Adventure Time!" although sometimes adventure time means napping somewhere new. He would carry his unicorn plush with him just to feel secure.

< Working on a modern style chair for an MSD and I've discovered you can't just shrink a human scaled chair down and it look proportionally correct.

▼ What's the one prop your doll needs/wants that is out of character for them.

 

^ A sword. Ollie is not a sword fighter at all, but she wants one so I will probably get one eventually.

v Do you have a favourite character of your dolls? If so, which one? Why?

 

^ Yeah, the character of my Ringdoll K\Dollmore Model hybrid is my favorite right now. His name is Johnathan Crow and he was sort of an accident. I was going through a serious art block, and after months of nothing at all, all I could do was scribble in a composition notebook. The scribbles turned into drawings of the same person over and over....and Ringdoll released K and he looked just like my drawings. I ordered just the blank head, and between the head and my scribbles I got John. He's very different for me, and special, because I feel like he pulled me out of my art block. Which is s depressing and scary thing. So yeah....he's my favorite.

V what kind of clothes do you want for your dolls that you can't really find?

 

^ Well, it'd be kinda nice to not have to make all of Ilya's tribal stuff, but that's also fun cause it's like...special and handmade. So that's cool. Pretty much everything else I've been able to find, surprisingly! (Except for various boyish styles for a certain OT boy... Seems all I can find is frilly dresses. Oh well, I guess I'll be getting some sewing practice!)

v On that note, what is the one thing your doll/character absolutely wouldn't want to forget when they went away from home, and what would they do if they did forget it?

 

^ Actually, painkillers. Icy doesn't need them nearly as often as before, but she tends to feel anxious without having a blister at hand. She rarely forgets her stuff, especially important bits, but if she does she'd much prefer getting back home or buying a new pack straight away - otherwise it would be impossible to relax. It might be fine, but what if... It's always better to be prepared.

v Speaking of waiting times. Did you ever decide against buying a doll you wanted and could afford just because estimated wait could be just tooo long? say Dollshe
