Props The Untamed Project / weapons

Mar 23, 2020

    1. As a huge fan of the chinese Drama 'The Untamed' I wanted to create the main characters Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi as dolls.
There are already many versions of their Anime/Donghua looks, but I wanted to adapt their life-action looks, so of course I couldn't just buy the Ringdoll weapons.

While waiting for the heads and bodies to arrive, I'm spending my time creating weapons.
The first one I've finished is Chenqing, Wei WuXians evil spiritual flute.
I made it with Apoxie sculpt.

    2. Nice, I cant make anything out of clay straight without some kind of support.
      Looking forward to their customization.

    3. Oh wow that's amazing! Following because the live action adaption is my favorite version in terms of aesthetic XD

    4. Yes, it's so well made, the costumes are beautiful and the weapons are so characteristic. I'm currently working on Suibian. I love that it looks like a branch xD

    5. Beautiful!! I love it!! Are you going to update this thread with the rest of your progress? :)

    7. Wow this is amazing! Not to mention that it can stand by it self lol. I love the detail, it looks like it can be separated into smaller pieces, which I think it would be cool if it can.

    12. Thank you all for your nice words and appreciation.

The project goes on! I've finished Suibian - Wei WuXian's sword.
It was a very hard weapon to create, because of the blade. I carved for so long to get a straight blade, it's still not 100% straight, but in the end it just wasn't possible to get it more even.

The metal color also was a big issue. I have a metallic spray, which gives a great realistic metal look, but couldn't use it at all because it gets damaged easily and that's a no go for something that is handled as often as a sword.
In the end I found another varnish, it's more of an antique silver, bit darker than what I imagined, but it worked for Suibian (because is has this kind of renegade and worn out look...)

Here are some photos taken during the sculpting process.
Again I used Apoxie (people say it's not good for weapon creation, because the pieces get too heavy, but Suibian has turned out to be a pretty light-weighted sword, the only thing that is a bit heavier is the hilt, but my dolls can hold it without problems)

    13. Here's the finished version now.
My boy Jay is the model here, I dressed him a bit like Wei WuXian to fit the scenery :D

I drew the chinese symbols (I'm not even sure they are chinese, some look like little drawings, probably notes for cultivation tricks xD) with a a very thin pencil brush. In reality they are incredibly small.

The original backside of Suibian is blank, but I thought it was funny to add a personal note, so I wrote 'Wei WuXian' on the back with a little heart. I think he would do such a thing
      :D

I've created the hilt and blade separately so I could focus on the blade and the hilt without fearing any damage or staining by colors that didn't belong to a certain area.
I glued it together when both was finished, with a very strong glue.

    14. Of course I'm also working on Lan WangJis props... but they are very, very difficult to create.
I started with the forehead ribbon and faced many problems, such as size, breakage and metal color not drying.
This is the first attempt, I'm not happy with the details yet, I think it could look cleaner and also a bit smaller.
My doll model here for Lan WangJi is Bin <3 He did a nice job trying it on.

So I will be posting a better version of this once it's completed. My Untamed heads have been finally shipped, maybe I can show it on the original WangJi doll next time.
