Special Event The Spirit of Fellowship: Adopt a Newbie!

Aug 22, 2015

    1. Adopt a Newbie!

In the spirit of good will and fellowship, we would like to invite our forum old-timers to participate in our "Adopt a Newbie" regifting event!

Many of us who have been in this hobby for a good long while have accumulated far more than we need, or sometimes want, to have. Surely, we all have things in new or like-new condition that we'd be happy to pass along to someone just starting out in the hobby!

Volunteer old-timers will be matched up with a Newbie (or more!) of similar doll interests. Once you have the information about your Newbie, you will assemble a nice little gift for them. Do your best to include something that will suit their dolly wishes or needs!

      Criteria for being a volunteer:

      - member for more than 3 years
      - be in good forum and MP standing
      - indicate what kind of newbie you are prepared to re-gift to (large boys, mini girls, tiny anthros, etc.)
      - indicate how many newbies you can handle!
      - can send your gift by Sept 8th~

There will be no dollar minimum or maximum on the worth of your gift.
We will send you information about your newbie(s) so you can find out what they are interested in or what they need. Do your best to make their wishes come true, and, most importantly - have fun!

Sign ups for a Newbie adoption are closed! :)

      ---------------------------------------------

:chibi Are you a Newbie? :chibi

With a welcoming spirit, we would like to invite our Newbies to benefit from the hoarding collecting habits of their forum elders.

When you buy your first doll, the first thing you think of is the creation of the special or unique look you will give your doll. It's a labor of love to pull it all together. It takes a lot of time, some patience and in most cases money. Having a basic piece of clothing, the right wig or eyes, takes that new piece of resin one step closer to your vision. We would like you to reap a small reward from our years of collecting and we hope that it helps you along just a wee bit.

If you are new to the forum, and new to doll ownership, please join us for this event.

      Criteria for being a Newbie:

      - member for 6 months or less
      - in good forum and MP (if applicable) standing
      - have at least one doll or have a doll on the way (on layaway counts!)

Now, if you have been collecting BJDs for five years but are new to DoA, please be honest, you are not a hobby Newbie and should refrain from signing up for this.

Sign up is now closed! We hope your doll will love the gift! :D

*We will do our very best to match up like minded old-timers and newbies. Matches will be handled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Because of this, not everyone may be able to participate!

Sign-ups for this event end on August 30th, Pacific Daylight Time, 11:59PM.

    2. This sounds fun! -dances-

    3. May I suggest to add a "notes/other" free box, where people can specify if they need to? For istance if someone want to ship/receive internationally but only in EU (so no custom) etc.

    4. I love this idea. I'll look through my boxes and see what I have that could help a newbie. :)

    5. This is sooo cute, I love it! I can only afford one little newbie right now sadly but this is great!

    6. This is such a great idea!

edit: Is there going to be a link in Newbieland for this? I know a lot of the newbies on DOA are still trying to navigate the forum and might not know about the annual anniversary events. :)

    7. I'd suggest one addition to the "styles" section... Historical.

I'd be in with my kimono and hakama sets for a couple of new folk, but they don't fit any of the style categories you've included.

    8. Seconding this! I'd love to help and I have lots of things for pukifee but nothing for yosd (and theyre the same option so I'd prefer to specify that) :sweat

    9. What a cool idea! I'd love to be a volunteer, but I am a few months shy of the 3 year membership requirement. How set in stone is that?

    10. would it maybe be possible to add a section to the form regarding allergies and sensitivities?
I personally live in a smoking home with a dog, and I know that might be an issue for some people so I'd hate to volunteer to send stuff out only to have the package trigger an allergy attack or something.
I also second the need to specify between yo-sd and pukifee/lati yellow 'cause I have things for pukifee and the like that I could send, but not so much for yo-sd.

    11. This sounds very neat! I've been a member of DoA for 7 years now (wow the time has flown! :sweat ), but I'm just now getting my first doll...so it's awesome to see those that have been around in the hobby longer helping out those that are new to it. ^__^

    12. This is a great idea and some good points have been raised in these comments.

I for one would love to see this done bi annually. Maybe we could do it again at Winter Holidays? Around the end of December/start of January? It's just such a good way to foster goodwill within the hobby and help new people feel welcome to the forum. (annnnnnd help me get rid of the doll stuff I can't sell and would like to send to someone who wants it! :sweat)

    13. We have added a notes box to the form, any additional information you need to add for consideration can be written there.

So if anyone wants to add costuming styles, or be more specific in their doll sizes, please use the notes box.

      It's on my to-do list!

Not set in stone, but if we have a Newbie shortage we may give preference to an older Oldtimer. Mind you, finding the best Oldtimer match for our Newbies is our most important goal.

These pieces of information can also be added to the notes box on the form.

Let's see how this one goes, I'd hate to commit to more in the future before we have this one in the bag. (But I agree, it is a fun idea and hopefully it all works out!)

    14. I LOVE this idea! Is there any way to extend this event? August is almost over and the deadline is the 31st.
I really want to donate but I'm moving house and packing atm. I might be able to haul arse though if I can but
a little extra time would do wonders T^T

    15. Totally joining this! I have so much cute stuff that is like new but my dolls just don't wear it anmyore - so gifting it to a newbie as a starter pack is an amazing idea! :D

    16. Don't be shy, Newbies! :) I'm seeing a lot of comments from Oldies that they're excited about this but not much to indicate that Newbies are signing up. A lot of us Oldies are really eager to share.

    17. This sounds like so much fun, I'm in! I have some MSD outfits ready that didn't end up in my fukubukuro bags so they'll be great for this. I hope the Newbies will see this thread once it's linked in the Newbie forum :)

    18. This is amazing! As a Newbie I'd like to say... THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!... to all the adopters, what a fantastic example of human kindness and generosity :) Tanks :]

    19. I'm a newbie!!! This is wonderfulll!!!!!! I just got my second doll (didn't take me long to decide my girl needed a friend) and I've only had him about a month- and he's only had eyes for about 2 weeks! Needless to say he has two outfits- generic fantasy, and naked.... so I'm super psyched!!! I love the idea of harboring goodwill in the community, and I really love the idea of reuse/recycling stuff :) I really hope we do more of these! Super thanks to all the "oldies" who are participating!!

    20. submitted my form!
this is such a lovely idea, I hope I can find some stuff in my hoard that my newbies will like!

    21. This looks really cool! I am still a year short of the 3 year requirement, but I hope a lot of people participate in this it is such a great idea!

    22. This is a fantastic idea!!! <3

    23. When will we get an email about our newbie? Because I need a little time in advance to prepare the package and prepare going to the postal office :)

    24. I'm so excited for this, it sounds like such fun to be a part of. I signed up a few days ago as a newbie when I saw the thread :). Can't wait to see what comes of it.

Just wondering, I provided as much information as I could think of, but I'm sure there will be something that the adopter might need to know that I'd forgotten. Will they be able to contact me for more information before they send if they need to? I wouldn't want them to be struggling due to me not giving enough details. I'm thinking particularly information in terms of sizing. Also, will we get to know who has sent to us (or adopted us, as you call it! :)) so that we can contact them to say thank you?

Thanks for running such a great programme, it's such a wonderful idea! :)

    25. This is such a fun idea! Signing up as an oldbie. :)

    26. I went ahead and signed up. I hope I get assigned to a newbie! :D

    27. I signed up as a newbie. Thank you for this opportunity! A big hug to the oldies who have participated! I tried to add as much info as I possibly could. My first girl is on layaway. I have seen BJDs in the past before but never learned about them since I never thought I would own one because I never saw myself paying for one. I guess it was fate :)

    28. I'd love to have an expierenced owner at my side. <3
Great idea. Signed the form already.

    29. This is a lovely idea, unfortunately I fall short of the 3 year requirement so can't volunteer to be an 'oldie' yet but maybe if this happens again I can participate.

    30. This is such a lovely idea. I signed up as a newbie! Really happy to be part of this! ^^
I hope it's okay that I entered. Although I joined doa in March I haven't received my first doll yet as I ordered in May. So I hope I can still be classed as a newbie even though technically I've been on this website just over 6 months!

    31. I have a potentially stupid question, but... Where the form says "full name," do we actually really need to give our first and last names? Because... I'm not really comfortable giving that when it's not absolutely necessary....

    32. I'm such a newbie, I don't even know how to sign up. :-)

AND, thank you to the member who gave me the link for the sign up.

    33. :...(//has been here for 7months

    34. Thanks for this idea.

Also, I am a newbie who just got reinstated this month. I bought my doll on eBay and she came last week. Then, an acquaintance who is a BJD enthusiast bought me one as a birthday present without knowing I'd just got one! One is a Bobobie and one is a ResinSoul, so they're cousins, too. How cool is that?

    35. Aw. I am still a newbie to the hobby for the most part, but sadly I signed up last May before I received my Realpuki Soso. I sure wish there had been something like this before I hit my 6 month mark! Lol. Regardless, I think this is an awesome event and it's nice to see so many generous people on the site! You guys are amazing. :)

    36. I'm a newbie, been in it less then year. I have pukipuki dolls 2. my phone won't let it click to sign up

    38. Entered! I would have LOVED this as a newbie - my girls wore socks for a long time.

You can post in Ask the Mods.

    39. This sounds like a great idea. Unfortunately for me, I still have two more years to go before I can join. Hopefully we'll have this available to do in the future.

    40. This is wonderful! It's really nice to see a community in action. :)

As a newbie, I wish I could take part, but unfortunately I'm at least a few months away from getting my first doll... I hope there will be another chance like this in the future!

    41. This is a great idea and I for one appreciate it. I'm a newbie and I've just completed the form. I noticed that it wouldn't let me access it from my phone or my tablet's native browser. Chrome on the tablet worked. That could be something that might be preventing others from signing up.

I've only had my girls since the end of July. A pre-loved Littlefee and a new Little Monica Honey Harmony. I'm looking into getting a Pukifee (this is an evil hobby) I never considered the clothing side of things until they arrived. I'm now teaching myself how to make clothes for them as I didn't realise that their wardrobe will be pricier than my own!

      Update: I bought a Pukifee[emoji13]

    42. It's wonderful that ya'll are doing this :D it's so nice how much this community is willing to help each other

    43. It's a wonderful idea! Sadly I can't send anything before the 31th because I won't be at home until the 4th september :...(

    44. I signed up and ticked not to receive from overseas.

I'd like to change that, if possible, as long as the sender will send as a gift. :)

A dragon is not just for Hogswatch!

    45. Just wondering, when will we know if we have received newbie? The only issue is that if items must be shipped by Monday, August 31st, then Saturday is the only day I can ship. I simply cannot get off work before the post office closes during the week. I doubt I'm the only person for whom this is cutting things a bit close.

    46. If this had been posted at the start of the month with that deadline, I would have loved to do this. But I have so much going on with the start of school and a boon of hours at work that I just can't promise I can meet that deadline, even though I'd love to help a newbie out. I really hope there will be a next time, cause this is such a sweet idea.

    47. I'm in the same boat; if there were a longer deadline, I could probably pull something together, but school's started up again here, and between that and two jobs (and the imminent closing of two GOs), I just don't have the time left to manage putting something together. Hopefully this'll run again, and I can get in on it then!

    48. Not to worry guys! Since this is the first time we've tried this, we weren't sure how fast people would sign up.
We are allowing people to join both sides the gifting event until August 30th, and we will move shipping back another week, til September 8th.

I've updated the first post for that change! Sorry for causing the worries~ @_@

    49. Will we be able to talk to our newbie?

    50. Awesome! Thanks :)

    51. The gifting is going to be based on the information the Newbie has provided to us, that we in turn hand over to you. We don't want to obligate anyone to have to converse with their Oldbie in order to receive a present. It isn't always easy being a Newbie on a large forum, and we want to make this as no-strings-attached easy on our Newbies as possible. If once the gift is given, the Newbies want to chat with their gift givers, it will be up to them.

    52. I will definatly chat to my oldie ^^ i tought this is the main purpose of the whole thing ^^

    53. I signed up as a newbie, only own a head atm, but she needs a wig. I really appriciate this event, even if i won't get matched to an oldie. Just the thought of people willing to gift items makes this hobby 100 times better.

    54. Thanks for the extended shipping date! Will definitely make things less stressful! :)

    55. I have tons of stuff I never use and can't be bothered to list for sale, but it's too good to throw away, so this is a wonderful opportunity to reduce my stash and help someone else at the same time. I have submitted the form and await further instructions!

    56. Thank you for the deadline extension! I will dive into my dolly closet this weekend and look for good stuff. :)

    57. I've been on here for awhile but I only got my first doll in July of 2015 so I only just started posting...hope that's okay...since I haven't been active till now... ;u; I'll send in an application tho just in case

    58. At this point in time, we have more Oldies than Newbies! It is certain that no Newbie will go without!! :aheartbea

    59. Well that's good to hear! Better than having it the other way around :)

    60. Signed up to adopt two newbies :) I've got a ton of cutesy fabrics and I'd love to make something for someone!
